Chapter 21 — Jurassic Park
After the peaceful yet exciting visit to the aquarium, Serena suggested another stop to her friends. "How about we check out the fossil laboratory museum ? This is the second-most popular attraction in this town, and I hear it's well worth a look." The idea sparked immediate interest from the group. Jude, Shauna and Tierno all nodded eagerly. The mention of fossils and ancient Pokémon intrigued them ; they constituted a worldwide phenomenon of scientific curiosity.
The fossil laboratory was located at the top of Ambrette Town, slightly isolated from the rest of the city by a large parking lot that stretched out like a sea of concrete. The building itself was modern, with sleek glass windows that reflected the surrounding cliffs and the orange glow of the beaming sun. As the gang approached, they could see the museum's banner showcasing images of antique Pokémon, some arthropod-looking like Kabuto, others similar to carnivorous plants like Cradily.
Upon entering, the four buddies were greeted by a spacious interior that spanned three floors, each filled with exhibits of prehistoric wonders. The ceilings were high, allowing plenty of room for the towering skeletons of gigantic creatures to loom impressively over the visitors. The air was cool, the lighting soft but highlighting the majestic displays.
Tierno pointed to a nearby showpiece, his enthusiasm bubbling over. "Come on, look ! That's the skeleton of a Tyrantrum. Can you imagine the kilos of meat needed to feed a huge beast like that ? I wouldn't want him as a pet, he'd raid my fridge..."
Shauna walked closer to the daunting bone assemblage, her eyes lingering on the massive jaws and sharp claws of the ancient giant. "It's crazy to think that these used to be real creatures. And what's even crazier is that researchers have actually managed to bring some of them back to life. How they achieved such a crazy trick is beyond me."
Jude stepped forward, though he wasn't exactly an expert on the subject. "It's linked to the advanced technology developed by Mister Lysandre. I don't know all the details, but once a fossil is restored to a good enough condition, they use highly developed 3D printers to help reconstruct the Pokémon in their egg stage."
Shauna tilted her head, intrigued. "Wait, you mean they literally print the Pokémon ?"
Jude shrugged slightly. "Sort of. The fossil gives them the DNA, and then the 3D printing process plays a key role in rebuilding the genome. It's pretty advanced stuff. Lysandre Labs has some of the most cutting-edge R&D equipment on Kalos."
Serena, who had been reading a plaque bearing details of the whole operation, chimed in. "It's not just for reviving long-extinct Pokémon either. This kind of tech is also used in medicine. They can recreate limbs or even specific organs for people who've been injured in battle or war. Although it's still impossible to replicate the brain of an average human being, they've accomplished this with livers, lungs and even hearts."
Shauna's eyes widened in amazement. "So they can actually bring back a part of someone's body ? That's… wow, that's incredible."
Jude nodded. "Yeah, I too found this almost surreal when I first heard about it. The country is booming since the government invested in these kinds of innovations. The medical sector has never been in better shape, just like engineering."
The group moved through the museum, stopping at each exhibit to marvel at the skeletons and preserved fossils. They passed displays of fascinating ancient creatures like Omastar or Armaldo, each accompanied by information about their prehistoric habitats and the livelihoods they had to adopt to survive in a hostile environment. The fossilized remains were displayed with care, each piece telling a story of a time long before humans existed.
As they ascended to the second floor, they found a detailed documentary video dedicated to the process of fossil restoration and Pokémon resurrection. There were diagrams showing the stages of fossil excavation, how the remains were carefully pieced together, and finally, the high-tech 3D printing process that made the revival possible. A massive model of a 3D printer stood at the center of the room, showcasing its role in creating lifelike replicas of fossilized Pokémon.
Tierno, who had been quietly taking it all in, added, "It's kind of inspiring. I mean, to think that science can do something like this. Makes you wonder what else is possible. Maybe one day they'll generate artificial beings that no longer require human procreation."
"The idea's kind of creepy, but it wouldn't surprise me that much," Jude agreed. "With how fast technology is advancing, the sky's the limit."
Shauna, still processing the enormity of it all, leaned closer to the trailblazing device. "But it must cost a fortune to make these prehistoric Pokémon come back to life, right ? That's why they're so rare ?"
"Exactly," Jude confirmed. "Only a few privileged souls have fossil Pokémon because the process is so expensive. That's why you mostly see them in high-level tournaments or with really wealthy trainers. Sometimes, the government entrusts them to selected breeding specialists to help them maximize their potential. Such is the case with Grant, our next challenge for the Cliff Badge."
"Ah yes, I hear he's a very capable Gym Leader. His dinosaur warriors are renowned for their titanic strength and devastating offensive tactics," Serena interjected. "It won't be easy to defeat him."
The four comrades moved on to the final floor of the museum, which showcased life-sized reconstructions of several prehistoric Pokémon, including aerial colossuses like Aerodactyl and robust sea turtles like Carracosta. The models were stunningly lifelike, posed as if they were in the midst of a great battle or simply walking through the ancient forests of Kalos. The sheer size of them made Tierno step back in awe. "They look so majestic, I'd love to own one !" he exclaimed. "Carracosta would make a perfect pal for Wartortle, and Aerodactyl could be an outstanding flying partner for Noivern."
As the foursome finished touring the museum, they found themselves reflecting on the marvels of Kalos' technological prowess and the way ancient history was being brought back to reality in such extraordinary ways. Shauna, still fascinated by the whole endeavor, couldn't stop talking about the implications of this revolutionary inventions, both for Pokémon and people. "All this has made me realize how much more elaborate our world is than I thought," she mused as they descended the staircase. "I mean, we've got this super advanced tech, these amazing Jurassic Pokémon… It makes me wonder what else we don't know about."
Jude grinned at his friend's curiosity. "There's always more to discover. And with how fast everything is evolving, who knows what we'll see next ?"
As the quartet made their way toward the exit, their minds still buzzing with stimulation from all they had witnessed, they were stopped by a familiar figure. Augustine Sycamore, the charismatic and well-known researcher, stood near the entrance, looking pleasantly surprised to see them. "Jude !" he called out, his warm smile brightening the space around him. "I didn't expect to run into you here."
Jude's face lit up as he walked over to greet the august scientist. "Professor, it's great to see you again. What brings you here ?"
"Well, recently I've been going back and forth between Lumiose City and Ambrette Town for research. Today, I'm here to check on some fascinating developments in the fossil laboratory. I saw your matches on TV, congratulations to all of you for winning your first badges, those were excellent performances."
"Thanks Professor, you're very kind," replied Shauna. "We've just finished the exhibition, and it was mind-blowing. I had no idea our region was THAT techno-savvy. Resurrecting extinct species—it's like something out of a fantasy !"
Augustine's smile widened at seeing their genuine interest. "I'm glad you enjoyed it. The work we do here is quite remarkable, it's one of the most leading-edge areas of study in the country. The machinery is certainly something to behold, especially when you see the results in action." Sycamore paused for a moment, as if contemplating something, then looked at the group with a slight twinkle in his eye. "Tell me—would you all like to see the laboratory section ? This is where the real magic happens, and I'd love to show you our latest reborn subjects."
The quartet's eyes simultaneously flashed. It was an opportunity they hadn't even dreamed of—a chance to see what went on behind the scenes in one of Kalos' most sophisticated R&D facilities. Jude and his friends exchanged excited glances before nodding enthusiastically. "Really ?" Tierno asked, wide-eyed. "We can actually see the Pokémon they've recreated ?"
"Absolutely," nodded Sycamore. "The eggs of a few antique dinosaurs hatched just yesterday. You'll get to see them in person, and believe me, it's quite a sight."
"That's incredible !" Shauna gushed, her eyes sparkling with anticipation. "Let's do it ! Please, lead the way, Professor."
Moving towards a reserved entrance for scientific staff, the famous researcher motioned for them to follow him. They passed through a series of corridors lined with security panels, and Sycamore waved his ID badge over a scanner to allow them entry. They were walking through a restricted wing of the building, normally closed off to the public. The air here was cooler, and there was a subtle hum of machinery in the background, giving the space a distinctly industrial atmosphere. After a short walk down a pristine hallway, they arrived at a large observation room, separated from the simulation site by a massive bay window.
The four fellows peered through the glass in awe, their eyes widening as they took in the scene. Below, the climate-controlled enclosure resembled a wintry landscape, complete with snow-covered rocks imitations, icy plains, and cool mist swirling in the air. It was as if they had stepped into an ancient world, long before humans walked the earth. In the midst of this recreated prehistoric world were several Pokémon wandering the snowy terrain, meticulously examined in real time by a team of specialists. The band of friends pressed closer to the glass, their eyes wide with wonder as they spotted the Jurassic Age specimens walking across the emulated terrain.
"There they are," Augustine announced, his voice filled with pride. "Tyrunt and Amaura. These are the latest Pokémon we've resurrected from fossils."
Serena immediately found herself captivated by the gentle, elegant Amaura. The pale blue dinosaurs walked gracefully across the icy ground, their long necks and majestic frills gleaming in the artificial light. Their large, curious eyes gave them an innocent appearance that melted the young trainer's heart. "They're so beautiful," she murmured.
Shauna, on the other hand, was drawn to the more rugged Tyrunt, which looked like miniature versions of the powerful Tyrantrum whose skeleton she'd seen earlier. The small but strong tyrannosaur-like Pokémon stomped through the snow, playfully nudging each other with their massive jaws. "These guys are so cool !" she exclaimed, her joy barely contained. "They're like little kings of the past."
Sycamore chuckled at their contrasting reactions. "Both Pokémon are exceptional in their own ways. Tyrunt tend to be energetic and territorial, while Amaura are more serene, thriving in cold climates," he explained further. "They're only one day old, but as you can see, the subjects have already grown quite a bit. Fossil Pokémon have an accelerated growth process in the early stages of life, likely due to the nature of their revival."
Serena watched as one of the Amaura nuzzled against another, their delicate crests glowing faintly under the overhead spotlights. "They seem so peaceful. It's hard to imagine them as ancient creatures that once roamed a world so different from ours."
"Indeed," Augustine agreed. "But even in this controlled environment, you can see hints of their ancient instincts. The Tyrunt, for example, are naturally aggressive and competitive. They play now, but soon enough, their primal impulses will start to show. That's why we study them carefully, to understand their behavior as they develop. The ultimate objective is to help them adapt to our modern world and its demands."
As he observed two Tyrunt fighting over a large piece of meat, Tierno noticed another familiar face among the researchers below. "Ey, look, isn't that Alexa ?" he asked, leaning closer to the glass. The well-known journalist was filming the scene, her camera trained on the scientists as they worked. She occasionally spoke with one of them, conducting interviews and gathering footage for what was sure to be a enthralling report.
Sycamore nodded. "Yes, she's doing a piece on our fossil revival project. She's been here since last night, documenting the process and interviewing our team. It's a great way to raise awareness about the work we're doing. Alexa's always keen to cover groundbreaking scientific developments."
"Viola introduced us to her one day, her big sister is super nifty," Shauna explained to Jude's attention. "Alexa told us about her many travels to compose her articles, this girl is a real adventurer."
"Yes, I've heard of her too, she has a good reputation in Kalos," Jude replied, "I particularly liked her feature on the Relic Castle ruins in the Unova region."
As the minutes passed, Serena found herself feeling a deep sense of awe. She couldn't help but think about how far technology had advanced—not just in Kalos, but around the world. The revival of these venerable species was a testament to humanity's ingenuity, but it was also a reminder of the vast mysteries that still lay beyond their understanding. After some time, Augustine finally broke the silence. "Well, I hope you've enjoyed this little glimpse behind the scenes. We're always working on new ways to push the boundaries of what's possible, and it's inspiring to be part of something like this."
Serena smiled at him. "It's been amazing, Professor. Thank you for showing us this. I think we've all learned a lot today."
"Absolutely," Shauna added. "This is something we'll never forget."
As they made their way out of the observatory, Sycamore placed a hand on Jude's shoulder. "You've come a long way since your time at the academy, Jude. I'm proud of you—and I'm sure you'll do great things in the tournament. Just remember, no matter what, keep learning and keep growing. Don't forget that victory always belongs to those who never give up, so do your best, even in the hardest situations."
Jude bowed respectfully, feeling a renewed sense of determination. "I will, Professor. Thank you."
The bright lights of the press conference in Cyllage City beamed down on the sparse stage, where three of the most promising candidates for the Kalos championship sat together : Alain, Astrid, and Kimia. The event, organized by their respective sponsors, was a show of corporate power and a preview of the fierce competition the Pokémon League promised. The atmosphere was buzzing with energy as journalists, business patrons and spectators filled the room, each looking for the best spot to capture footage and ask questions.
The three fabulous trainers stood side by side, facing the cameras, with their respective brand logos displayed behind them. Alain sat in the middle, which suited him just fine. His calm demeanor and sharp focus made him a natural choice for the spotlight, especially since he suspected the organizers had put him there to provide a barrier between his lady counterparts. Indeed, Astrid and Kimia had disliked each other from the minute they met, and although they tried to maintain a veneer of professionalism, their mutual scorn was evident in the glares they exchanged when they thought no one was looking. If their stares could kill, there would have been a major incident already.
Astrid, her sleek, purple outfit reflecting her polished style, sat with her arms crossed. Her expression was one of bored disdain, though her violet eyes occasionally flicked to the Beaumont aristress with barely concealed irritation. On Alain's other side, Kimia sat tall and poised, her elegant posture exuding the aristocratic grace that had been ingrained in her from birth. The animosity between them was thick enough to cut with a knife. Alain, standing between them, glanced nervously at both women. He could feel the electricity in the air, and not the kind that came from a Thunderbolt attack.
He hoped the media meeting would go smoothly, but it was clear that Astrid and Kimia were on the verge of a full-blown confrontation. As the cameras rolled and the interview began, the blue-scarfed boy was the first to be addressed by a reporter, fielding questions from the press with his usual serene composure. He spoke about his workouts with Charmeleon, his goals for the tournament, and his partnership with Lysandre Labs, which had been a significant factor in his preparation for the big event. The journalists seemed satisfied, scribbling furiously in their notebooks drafts of their next articles.
But the real undercurrent of tension was brewing between Astrid and Kimia. The moment the attention shifted to them, the temperature in the room seemed to drop. Another newsboy intervened, turning to Kimia. "Miss Beaumont, you've recently secured a major sponsorship contract with Stern Dassault, one of the largest weapons manufacturers in the whole country. Could you tell us more about how that collaboration came to be ?"
Kimia, always sober and elegant, took her turn. "The partnership is a natural fit," she said smoothly, her voice carrying the air of someone who had been groomed for public appearances her entire life. "Stern Dassault represents Kalos' military excellence, and I'm honored to have their support as I pursue my goal of joining the Elite 4. Together, we represent the future of strength, discipline, and resilience. I have a deep respect for these three principles, both in battle and in life." Her words were measured, but there was a subtle edge to them, as if directed not just at the audience, but at her blonde colleague as well.
Astrid had noticed this, and it made her twitch slightly, her body language screaming annoyance. She let out a quiet scoff, drawing attention. Alain shot her a brief look, a silent plea for her to keep things civil, but the young trainer wasn't one to be bossed around. A female interviewer stepped in, gesturing to her assistant to position the camcorder correctly. "Gabby from Hoenn TV," she quickly introduced herself. "Miss Hunter, you've been making waves with your partnership with Latias Airlines, but you've also earned a notoriety for your no-nonsense attitude in battles. Do you have a statement for our viewers ?"
Astrid leaned forward slightly, her sharp features illuminated by the camera lights. "My focus is on victory," she declared, her tone curt. "I'm not here to sell weapons or promote an outdated bourgeoisie. My Pokémon and I are ready to show the world what real power looks like. Everything else is just noise."
The confidence—and barely concealed arrogance—in her voice sent a ripple through the room. Kimia's smile faded slightly, her eyes narrowing. This impetuous girl had indirectly issued her a challenge, one she'd be delighted to win to knock her down a peg. The interview continued, with the reporters throwing questions about strategies, Pokémon preferences, and training methods. Alain answered calmly, Astrid with terse efficiency, and Kimia with her practiced grace.
Astrid's mask slipped more than once, her natural hostility seeping into her responses. She struggled to keep her contempt for Kimia under wraps ; everything about the young noblewoman seemed to repulse her, from her unusual hairstyle to her posh attire. When the interview finally ended and the cameras switched off, the tension that had been simmering throughout the event exploded into open enmity. The journalists began to pack up, their notes full of quotes and insights. The three guests exchanged cordial handshakes for good measure, but as soon as the lights dimmed and the crowd started to disperse, the real show kicked off.
Kimia was the first to raise a stink, her voice dripping with smugness. "I usually like people with confidence. But in your case, Hunter, it looks more like misplaced pride. Real power, as you say, comes from dedication and hard work, not reckless flare."
Astrid's eyes flashed with agitation, her hand tightening around the arm of her chair. "Oh, and I suppose you know all about hard work, don't you ? Born into a family of pampered aristocrats, everything handed to you on a silver platter. You've never had to fight for anything a day in your life, so keep shut, pansy."
Kimia, usually the epitome of calm, felt her own temper rising. "If that's what you think of me, you're more ignorant than I thought," she snapped back, her voice cold. "Do you think being born into privilege means I've had it easy ? I've worked just as hard as anyone to get where I am, probably harder than you ever could."
The two girls locked eyes, their glares sharp enough to cut glass. Astrid smirked, stepping closer, her voice low and threatening. "What a good joke. You're just another spoiled rich snob playing soldier. You think you've earned your place in this tournament ? You haven't. People like you get to waltz through life while the rest of us have to claw our way to the top. You have no legitimacy, only good connections."
Kimia stood up, her posture rigid as steel. "Your naivety is a pain to behold, you don't know anything about me or my family. Only fools judge a book by its cover, but if you want proof, I'll gladly show you—on the battlefield."
"Please do, I'll be more than happy to crush you and show everyone what a fraud you are." The two women were now inches apart, their foreheads almost pressed together, their teeth clenched so tightly they looked like fangs. Alain, sensing that things were about to escalate beyond words, quickly stepped between them, forcing them back away with his hands.
"Enough, both of you," he ordered firmly. "This isn't the time or place for this. You're both very talented trainers, but your infantile attitude is unworthy of your skills. Think of your fans, you're supposed to be setting a good example for them."
However, his intervention didn't seem to help matters ; it was even worse now. "Stay out of this, Mr. peacemaker, nobody buzzed you," Astrid scolded him, still seething. "As for you, toff, I'm gonna wipe the floor with you in the arena. You'll see just how far your fancy upbringing gets you when I'm done."
Kimia's coolness vanished, her voice hardening as she retorted, "You'd better hope we don't face each other too soon, a parvenu idiot like you doesn't stand a chance against a Beaumont. You don't impress anyone, you're just good at blowing hot air."
"What did you call me !? Scum like you make me puke, I hate you !"
"The feeling is mutual !"
Alain sighed inwardly, feeling like an older brother trying to keep his younger sisters from tearing each other apart. He could feel the conflict rising, like an approaching hurricane. He pushed himself more firmly between them, his voice taking on an edge of frustration. "Quiet down. If you two don't stop, I'm going to call security."
That caught their attention. Neither girl wanted the embarrassment of being pulled apart by gruff guards, and after a tense few seconds, they finally ceased shooting daggers at each other, both of them stepping back but still radiating anger. Astrid shot one last venomous look at Kimia before turning on her heel. "You'll get yours," she muttered under her breath as she stormed off, slamming the door violently behind her. The Beaumont heiress mirrored this, walking in the opposite direction.
As they disappeared down separate corridors, Alain let out a weary exhale. Being stuck in the middle of two feuding rivals was exhausting, and he knew this wouldn't be the last time he'd have to play the mediator. He glanced over his shoulder, where the empty conference room stood in stark contrast to the tension that had filled it moments before. Kimia and Astrid had only just met, and already the drama was swirling. They both exuded a competitive energy, and Alain knew that the real clash between them had already begun, long before they'd ever set foot on a ring.
Jude had found the perfect spot behind their motel for an impromptu training session. The area was a quiet, empty backyard surrounded by tall trees and the rear wall of the building. The late afternoon sun filtered through the branches, casting long shadows over the rough ground, making it feel like a hidden dojo of sorts. It offered enough space for a good sparring match and the tranquility they needed to focus.
Tierno stood across from Jude, ready to help him organize the fight between his Pokémon. Today, it would be a close-combat duel between Frogadier and Snubbull. To make things more interesting, they had decided that Tierno would temporarily command Frogadier for this battle, while Jude would take charge of Snubbull. This wasn't an issue, as the ninja frog had trained with the street dancer in the past and fully trusted him.
"Are you ready ?" Jude asked, giving his little partner an encouraging nod. The pink bulldog barked in response, bouncing on its feet, though he seemed nervous about facing the faster, more agile amphibian. "It's going to be a tough struggle, but you mustn't be discouraged. Give it your all."
Tierno smiled at Frogadier while bumping his fist with his own. "Alright, blue bro, it's time to kick some ass. Show them why you're a Ninja King." The azure frog immediately took up a combat stance, his eyes sharp with focus. "Start by blowing their minds with Double Team !"
In an instant, Frogadier's form blurred, and two copies of him spread out across the field. Snubbull spun around, confused by the sudden appearance of three identical frogs. He couldn't tell the original from the clones. "Stay alert and use bite," Jude instructed. His fighter leaped toward the nearest Frogadier, snapping its jaws shut, but it passed through an illusion. Then he swiveled sideways and swatted another batrachian with his clawed paw, but this one too revealed itself to be a fake and evaporated on contact.
Just at that moment, the real Frogadier burst out from behind, delivering a light but swift kick that sent Snubbull tumbling. No sooner had the small Pokémon risen to his feet than his adversary was back at it again. In a blur, the frog shot forward, his movements quick and fluid, his form barely visible as he zipped across the ground. Snubbull growled, trying to anticipate the incoming attack, but Frogadier was too fast. He darted around his opponent, tapping him on the side before disappearing again. The bulldog was clearly at a disadvantage, both in terms of velocity and bodily potency.
From the sidelines, Serena and Shauna watched with mixed emotions. Shauna looked nervous, chewing her lip apprehensively. "Oh no, poor Snubbull's having a hard time already," she winced. "I wonder if this duel was a good idea, the level gap between them is too big."
Serena, more calm and collected, tried to reassure her friend. "Don't worry, Frogadier's an ally. He won't go too hard on Snubbull—just enough to drive him to his maximum. Plus, Jude and Tierno will stop the match if things get out of hand."
Out of sight from the group but not from the sounds of battle, Korrina watched from the motel's balcony. She'd just booked a room for the night, and the hubbub of fighting Pokémon had drawn her curiosity. She leaned against the railing, intrigued by Jude's presence, whom she recognized instantly. She had followed his performance against Viola with keen interest and hadn't expected to see him back here, obviously coaching a new recruit. "A Snubbull doing martial arts ?" she murmured to herself, narrowing her eyes on the scrappy Pokémon. "Now, that's something you don't see every day."
Meanwhile, on the makeshift battlefield, the batrachian danced around his opponent with graceful movements, blending his ninja-like agility with Tierno's signature breakdancing flair. This unpredictable combination made it difficult for Snubbull to land a hit. The pink bulldog snapped his jaws, trying to catch Frogadier mid-dash, but every attempt came up short. Each time he launched a strike, the frog would twist out of the way or flip over Snubbull's head, responding with a swift counterattack.
"Hey, what a flow, that frog is on fire !" raved Tierno while twirling his body on his head. "Well, in a manner of speaking, eh ?" he added, returning to his feet with a flexible hop. "Frogadier, Water Pulse, now !"
A glowing aquatic ball forms in the amphibian's webbed hands before he hurled it his adversary. Snubbull jumped to the side, barely avoiding the hydro blast, and landed on all fours. His breath was ragged, his small body heaving with exhaustion, but his eyes were sharper than ever. Jude could feel it—his brave Pokémon was reaching a breaking point. Originally, he had initiated this workout to help his new companion accustom himself to stressful situations, in order to be better prepared for professional encounters.
Despite being outclassed, the bulldog managed to stay concentrated and never lost his nerve. As the fight went on, he made fewer and fewer mistakes, and his movements became quicker, more precise. Now, Jude thought, it might be time to call a halt to the bout, as Snubbull had done well enough for today. But just as he was about to ask Tierno to break up the confrontation, something extraordinary happened. A sudden surge of energy burst forth from the pink Pokémon's small frame, startling everyone nearby. Jude blinked in surprise, and across the yard, Tierno stopped mid-dance, his eyes widening as he watched the transformation unfold.
Snubbull's body began to glow with an intense, pulsating purple halo. His short limbs lengthened, his muscles bulking up as his tiny form grew larger and more powerful. His jaw extended, and his once-cute face became more fearsome, sharp teeth sprouting from his mouth. When the light faded, Granbull stood in Snubbull's place, its pink skin now a tougher, more rugged texture, and its jawline strong and filled with two gleaming fangs. The once small and playful Pokémon had become a massive and intimidating force of nature. The air around him seemed to shimmer as he let out a satisfied grunt.
"That's great !" Serena exclaimed, a mixture of shock and excitement in her voice.
Shauna was equally amazed, her eyes sparkling. "I love his new style, he looks so cool, like a pro wrestler !"
"I wasn't expecting this, but things are about to get serious," Korrina mused, a smirk tugging at her lips.
The now more assertive Pokémon flexed his new muscles, letting out a deep, rumbling growl that echoed through the backyard. Frogadier, still poised and agile, seemed to size up his newly evolved opponent with newfound respect. Jude's heart swelled with pride. "Granbull… You did it, congratulations ! I planned to stop the brawl, but given how things have turned out, do you want to continue ?" The large bipedal bulldog gave him a thumbs-up, indicating that he was more than willing. "Awesome, let's see what you can do. Go for Play Rough !"
Granbull charged at Frogadier with surprising speed for a Pokémon of his size. The frog sought to evade, but the mighty dog was much faster than before. He closed the distance in an instant, delivering a devastating punch that sent the batrachian skidding backwards. The blue ninja landed nimbly, using his hands to spin into a cartwheel, then somersaulted sideways to duck another jab from an over-energized Granbull. The fight was no longer so one-sided, as Frogadier needed all his vigilance to counter the barrage of assaults he was now facing. Granbull's larger stature and enhanced agility allowed him to land hit after hit, each one more forceful than the last.
Frogadier tried to retaliate with a roundhouse kick which his challenger immediately parried, adopting the guard of a seasoned boxer. He was now confronting an entirely different threat, one strong enough to withstand him. In a final surge of buried vigor, both warriors clashed in a flurry of explosive blows. The two Pokémon, now evenly matched, fought fiercely, neither one willing to back down. Finally, after several intense exchanges, both fighters stopped, panting heavily. They had reached their limits, ending the combat in a draw.
There was a brief period of silence before Tierno broke it by shouting in delight. "Boy, that was a hell of a brawl ! Granbull's a real powerhouse now, he rocks !"
The two Pokémon exchanged a sporty handshake, both satisfied with their performance. "Bravo, you battled admirably, I'm very proud of you," Jude praised them. "Keep up the good work and your efforts will be rewarded." Granbull let out a joyous bark and bounded forward, wrapping his massive arms around his trainer in a tight, almost overwhelming bear hug. "Whoa, easy there," Jude laughed, though he was struggling to breathe under the bulldog's enthusiastic embrace. "You're… a little stronger than before."
"Such a bond of affection between a trainer and his Pokémon, it's so sweet," Shauna giggled. "I'm happy for Snubbull—uh, I mean Granbull. With this new form, I guess he'll be able to unfurl his entire potential."
"Absolutely, besides I suppose that's why Jude had taught him hand-to-hand combat in the first place," Serena speculated. "He knew that by evolving, his sturdy body would enable him to exploit everything he'd learned to the full, and the result speaks for itself. It just goes to show what a lot of perseverance can do."
From her vantage point, Korrina grinned, pleased by what she had witnessed. It had been a while since she'd seen such strenuous practice, and this Granbull was certainly something special. He had heart and dedication, two qualities that any martial artist should share. She made a mental note to introduce herself to Jude and his friends later—after all, any trainer capable of bringing out the best in their Pokémon like that was someone worth knowing. But for now, she simply headed back to her room. It would soon be dark, and she was exhausted.
To be continued
