Chapter 10
Jack Frost didn't exactly flee the scene, he turned invisible and watched from the rafters. In his defense, he was shocked because he clearly remembered from his memories that Emily Jane was Mother Nature, Kozmotis Pitcher was dead after the final defeat and the bogey man was just a story. Somehow he knew that this Kozmotis Pitcher was not the Pitch Black he had battled before, but Jack still felt a sharp pain in his palm and knew he was still connected to them, both the man who had been consumed by dark fears and this golden age general who looked confused but held his daughter's hand like a lifeline. So what was going on?
But instead of concentrating on the non-bogey man situration, Jack's eyes found themselves fixed on the young woman who Santa aka old Nick was looking over with a concerned, but tender look in his eyes as he introduced himself, as the rest of the guardians' eyes widen in recognition as unlocked memories flooded their minds.
Jack's heart was caught in his throat as his body sang in recognition, his heart felt more peaceful and happy as the young woman smiled brightly and gave a laugh that seemed to brighten the room. He knew her. It was his Katherine, even if she didn't seem to recognize her friends.
Seeing that Katherine was occupied in getting to know everyone, Jack slipped out to sit on the roof of the palace as his mind went back when he introduced her to his family, Jamie's family. A sharp blush swept his face as he remembered. Twiner just rolled his eyes. Humans.
1930's just after the defeat of Pitch Black.
Katherine's hand in his own was warm next to his cold one. Jack found himself rubbing his thumb against Katherine's hand as they walked towards the cottage where Jack's namesake was jumping up and down with excitement.
Jack dropped his staff in shock as he recalled how Kozmotis Pitcher came into being, his mind rushing past the delicious dinner of chicken dumplings, and how his family's descendants teased him and Katherine about being a couple. A couple of what's he didn't really know, but he remembered waking up by Kailash's heavy goose snoring to sound of Katherine's quick quill writing.
Jack noticed that she had redressed in the nightgown that his family was kind enough to lend her. Their innocent 'Goodnight Kiss' had lead to a deeper kiss, a deeper intimacy, one that was shared between adults.
Kailash had wiggled through the hole in roof as their 'Goodnight Kiss' had started to deepen a third time, Kailash had settled her body in between her mother and Jack and went right to sleep.
Kailash's heavy warm body that had snuggled between the couple in the dead of night, and too much heat wasn't good for him.
"My Katherine, what are you doing?" The pictures and words he saw worried him.
"I found a way to bring back the General!" Katherine's face was shining in excitement as the teardrop ice crystals he had fashioned with Nicks' help moved as she towards him. Jack's hand, the one that had been connected to Pitch Black throbbed in warning.
Jack's eyes had widen and he remembered how all of the guardian's memories had been wiped away as the result of Katherine's goodhearted but misguided attempt to reunited father and daughter.
The earrings that they made were the key to reverse this thing. Why was Katherine missing an earring?
Jack decided to follow up on that. He causally dropped to the ground and sauntered into where the guardians, the general and his daughter had been chatting over tea and cakes. "Hello Katherine, I'm Jack Frost."
Katherine never flushed but she turned a little rosy at the sight of Jack Frost's face. To distract herself from the young man, she turned her attention to Nick, Santa Claus, her mind squealed in delight, jumping up and down at the thought.
"Do you know how to get my memories back?"
North sighed. "It deals with your crystal drop earrings, but you are missing one. Or both now." He shot a small glare at Jack who smirked at him, Katherine's remaining earring in his hand. Guess she had no choice but to deal with him. She hoped it wasn't the Jack, Jamie was trying to set her up with.
"I didn't do anything. That was all Gal's work. Thank you." The wind whistled around them pushing Katherine and Jack towards the door while keeping the others back.
Before they stepped from the hall, Jack dropped the earring into Katherine's hand, clasping it so her whole hand covered it as he covered hers with both hands. "Come back to me my Katherine."
Jack whispered to her brushing a flitting kiss on her forehead.
As the teardrop crystal earring melted slowly in her hand, Katherine's mind started to fill in the missing memories a slow clapping sound startled her out of her mind as Pitch Black moved out of the shadows, a tied up Emily Jane behind him with a struggling Kozmotis Pitcher before him.
"Pitch!" North started to move towards him, but Pitch tsked tsked at him as he revealed a shimmering web made of silk creations, last seen when Blandim had wielded them.
"Oh I'm sorry, did I step into your touching reunion?!" Pitch purred, a dagger that had been the same as Nightlight's long ago but the stones were dark as night and the blade ebony.
"I've had worked on this for eons, after all, I'm just a bedtime story, the bogeyman as they say. You're not the only one who had a dagger trick up his sleeve."
With that, Pitch impaled his own hand. His smile grew as the guardians all started to scream.
Jamie woke up in the middle of the night seeing a note and Katherine's earring that he had put in the lost and found at the library.
