The New York Crew Ch. 03

TRIGGER WARNING: TALKS OF DEPRESSION AND SUICIDE ATTEMPT AHEAD. PROCEED AT YOUR OWN RISK.

"Giant monsters from another Earth?" Gizmo asks as they were pulling up to the abandoned building.

Slick gets out of the cab. "Yeah! Ain't it neat?"

"It's unbelievable that's what it is," She tells him as she got out as well. "I'd probably seen proof of this, and still don't believe it. I don't think the boogey man would believe It."

"He better start believing, since it's all true." Zilla tells her when he gets out and slams the door so hard it broke the window.

"Hey, pal!" Slick walks up to him. "That Kamebo, Kamedo, Kokame..." he finds himself struggling with another name. "Ya know, I'll just call him Kame. Back there ya punched right through the other two like you were just moving them out of the way," he can see the worry in Zilla's eyes. "But with Kame? It seemed personal. Was he the one that—"

"Yeah," Zilla interrupts. "He was."

"You mean the same one that killed your girlfriend?" Gizmo asks.

"As I already said yes." Zilla lets out a low growl. At that notion Gizmo turns her gaze away from him and up to the building.

"Uh, this Komi girl," the woman starts to say. "She wouldn't happen to be wearing a brown hoodie, would she?"

"Yeah, why ya asking?" Slick asks before she points up at the building. Following her gaze all the way up he sees Komi standing at the edge. "Holy mother of…"

"KOMI!" Zilla yells when he sees her and runs into the building. Slick and Gizmo decide to wait and see if they would be needed on the ground.

.oOo.

Komi has no idea how long she had been standing there, all she knows is that it had been a while. She remembers a yellow car driving up, seeing Zilla stepping out with Slick and someone new. She also heard Zilla calling out her name for the last time and him running in.

She stands there for a while longer before her final step. Then Komi realizes she waited too long as she felt someone pulling on her arm and away from the edge. As soon as she turns around Komi just starts hitting whoever stopped her. Not even thinking or caring.

"Komi, stop!" she hears Zilla's voice and immediately stops.

"Zilla?" Komi looks up into her mate's worried eyes and began crying into his shoulders.

After a few moments, Zilla asks, "What are you doing up hear?" while holding her in his arms.

"I was trying to end it," Komi tells. "I remember dying," she raises her head to look back into his eyes. "And my child never had…" and places her head back into his shoulders. "I just couldn't stand it anymore."

"When I lost you both," Zilla starts. "I still haven't gotten over it to this day," he puts his hand in her hair and starts stroking her head. "I remember feeling like what you are right now. I didn't see much reason to live. I did have my father and his friends to keep me company and they tried to cheer me up," he pulls himself away to look back into her eyes. "You have me. I know that it won't be easy, but I'll do everything in my power to make it hurt less."

Zilla then remembers something his dad did with the Audrey girl he liked. He leaned in and pressed his lips against hers. Komi's eyes stopped tearing as they shot wide open. After a moment she relaxes in Zilla's embrace. It felt like nothing in the universe existed except them.

"What was that?" She asks with perhaps the biggest smile she has had in a long time.

Zilla returns the smile. "I think humans call it a kiss."

"I guess everything's all right now," they hear Gizmo saying. Turning the kaiju see her and Slick up on the roof with them.

"How long have you been there?" Zilla asks.

"About," Slick looks down at his watch. "fifteen minutes."

"You two were at it far longer than that," Gizmo tells them. "We started wondering when you will take a breather," the woman held out a hand to Slick who passed a few bills over to her.

Both former kaiju could feel their faces getting warm and looking at them one could see their cheeks turning red, even underneath their scales.

"Doesn't matter," Slick walks up to them. "Nice to see ya on your feet, too…" he stops midsentence hearing Komi growling. "I, uh, mean, Komi," Slick puts his hands up in defense feeling sweat trickling down his forehead.

"That's better, Slick," she grins. Komi then turns her attention to the new human. "I don't believe we've met."

"I'm, Gizmo," the new human introduces herself, walking up to Komi, and holds her a hand held out.

"Komodithrax," She giggles a bit seeing Gizmo's confusion. "But I guess you can call me Komi," she takes her hand and shook it. "It seems much easier to remember."

Once the giggling died down, Gizmo looks back at the former komodo. "Is everything all right?"

Komi looks back at Zilla before answering. "No. And I don't think it'll ever be. But we'll work through it. Together." and the two kaiju stare at each other for a moment before the silence is broken by Slick.

"So, what are we going to do now?" Slick asks, walking up to the rest of them. "We have three mutant freaks out trying to kill us. No offense."

Zilla says, "None taken."

Komi looks back at the former iguana, "What mutant freaks?"

Zilla reaches into his pocket, "There's something you should know," and brings out the news clipping.

Seeing this, the former komodo growls, "Kamoebas!" not paying any attention to what the clipping is about.

"And not just him," Slick tells her. "There were two others as well."

"I'm certain that they aren't the only ones," Gizmo steps in. "I have been researching reports of similar cases and if I am correct there are more," she looks at them with worry. "What are we going to do?"

"We keep an eye out," everyone turns to Zilla. "We keep an eye out for any kaiju that appears to be a threat and try to make friends with the ones that aren't. Until then we try to live as normal as possible. No different from what I used to do back home."

"Yeah! And ya know, Zilla, ya ain't a bad driver," Slick informs him. "All ya need is ta learn the rules an ya can easily pass as a cabbie. I can even get ya some license. Just don't ask where I got it."

Hearing this, Gizmo puts her hands firmly on her hips. "And where is he going to get a cab?"

Slick backs up a bit. "Well, I figured that he could just barrow your car."

"Okay. He can have it on one condition," She turns to Zilla and Komi. "Let me stay with you guys, please!" and starts begging. "I was afraid to live alone after my first encounter, but this time, I'm terrified."

"I guess it'll be okay," Zilla look to Komi. "There's plenty of room here and I see no reason to say no."

Gizmo jumps, full of excitement, "Thank you!"

Everyone just now notices that the sun is setting. They walk near the edge, taking in the beauty of the sunset. Zilla and Komi stand side by side with Zilla wrapping his arm around Komi and she laid her head on his shoulder. Slick stands next to them putting his hands behind his head. And Gizmo sits at the edge.

"Hey, Z," Komi look up at Zilla. "Would this be the end of our lives?"

"I don't think so," he looked back at her. "This is New York after all. If anything, it's an opportunity for a new life," they smile at each other before Komi kisses him again.

.oOo.

The street has been put into a quarantine zone. Everyone who lives on or near the street has been told that it is due to a gas leak. In truth, there is a cover up taking place.

There is a large truck ready to transport three dangerous and unusual criminals. The last one had just been loaded up before the head of the operations got a call.

"Captain Johnathan Jetson here," An average looking man with an Australian accent, wearing some sort of greyish uniform says as he answers the phone.

"Captain. How's the operation going?" a voice from the other side of the line asks.

"Director!" The captain quickly straightened up and resisted the urge to salute over the phone. "I regret to inform you that the mission was a failure," the Captain looks at the truck as the doors slam shut. "Sir, I like to say that I never liked the idea of using the three kaiju to capture a civilian. And promising them an early release in return."

"Captain, this civilian is running a blog that was cataloging suspected kaiju activity," the Director tells him. "We want this whole kaiju thing to stay under wraps for as long as possible. I already have a hard enough time doing that with this Mosura character posing as a friend to humanity," he stops for a moment. "Besides, they were only going to apprehend her so she could be persuaded to quit looking."

"I still don't like it, sir."

"You don't have to like it. You just have to follow orders. Besides, it's not like we were actually going to grant them their freedom. Now progress report, was it difficult to recapture those monsters?"

"Negative, sir."

"Good"

"I don't think so, sir."

"What do you mean, Captain?"

"Ganime, was found leaving the house with his exoskeleton cracked around his face," the captain informs the director looking down on a clip board. "Gezora, was in the middle of the street with a great deal of burn marks on his body. They said it was from a low level of concentrated radiation. And Kamoebas was knocked out cold with freshly made skid marks of a small vehicle that lead straight to him, stops just before him, and then leads off at the turn."

"What are you saying, Captain?"

"Sir, I think this woman was protected by another kaiju."

"And YOU let them escape!" the director is furious.

"We had no information of any other kaiju in New York until now, Sir."

"We will discuss this later, Captain. For now, I'm transferring you here in Japan. You may bring your family if you wish."

"Yes, sir." The captain says just before the Director hangs up. "Alright men! Move out!" he orders every soldier in the area. As he is about to get into the passenger side of the truck, he stops to look at the lettering on the side.

NOTE: the idea that Kamoebas was the one responsible for the incident with Komodithrax and the egg came from Matt Frank's Neo Godzilla Fan Art. Not going to lie. I do refer to them often here and there. They're great artwork with wonderful story telling. Many Godzilla fans may be familiar with his work on the IDW Godzilla comic's as well.
