Rory and Aoki strolled through the streets of Cerulean City, their eyes taking in the calm, picturesque surroundings. The soft sound of the river flowing nearby was relaxing after their adrenaline-filled journey from Pewter City and their encounter with Team Dark. As they approached the Cerulean Gym, they both looked up at the impressive building, expecting to challenge the next Gym Leader on their quest to earn more badges.
"There it is," Rory said, his voice filled with excitement. "The Cerulean Gym. This is going to be awesome!"
Aoki nodded; her eyes fixed on the gym's grand structure. "I can't wait to test Blaze against the Ice-types. We've come a long way, and this is our next big challenge."
However, as they got closer, their excitement began to fade when they noticed a large sign posted outside the gym doors. The words were written in bold letters, impossible to miss:
"Cerulean Gym Closed Until Further Notice. Gym Leader Unavailable."
Rory stopped in his tracks, his brow furrowing in confusion. "Wait, what? Closed? That can't be right."
Aoki frowned, stepping closer to the sign and reading it aloud. "'Gym Leader unavailable…' What does that even mean?"
Just as they were trying to make sense of the situation, they heard footsteps approaching from behind. They turned to see a young woman walking toward them, her long orange hair tied back and her expression a mixture of concern and apology. She was wearing a violently yellow dress, and was carrying a large basket of groceries, her light blue eyes friendly but clearly tired.
"Hey," the woman said, giving them a small smile. "You're here for the Gym Battle, huh?"
"Yeah," Rory replied, scratching his head. "But the gym's closed? But…we've been training hard for this."
The woman sighed, shaking her head. "I'm sorry about that. I'm Mellissa, my uncle runs the Cerulean Gym. He's...well, he's not really in the best place right now."
Aoki tilted her head, curious. "Not in the best place? What's going on? Is he sick?"
Mellissa glanced down, her expression softening with concern. "No, he's not sick. It's more…emotional if you know what I mean. He's just been keeping to himself lately, not really talking to anyone. He hasn't left the house in days."
Rory raised an eyebrow. "He won't even come out for challengers?"
Mellissa shook her head again. "No. And believe me, I've tried. He's probably the strongest Ice-type trainer in Kanto, but sometimes, he gets like this. He only battles when he's feeling up to it, and lately for a while…that just hasn't been happening. One time he didn't even leave the house for over 5 weeks."
Aoki exchanged a glance with Rory, her face overloaded with emotions. "That's tough. Is there anything we can do to help?"
Mellissa gave them a grateful smile, though her eyes remained heavy with worry. "I appreciate the offer, but honestly, I don't know if there's much anyone can do. My uncle's been like this for years…ever since my aunt…his wife passed away. He just… loses motivation sometimes."
Rory's mildly frustrated expression softened. "That's really rough. We didn't know."
Mellissa sighed deeply. "It's okay. It's not exactly something we advertise, you know? He loves Pokémon and he loves being a Gym Leader, but when these episodes hit, it's hard to get him back to his usual self."
Aoki bit her lip, thinking. "Is there anything specific that helps? Something that gets him to come out?"
Mellissa shrugged slightly, her gaze drifting toward the gym. "Sometimes, talking about his old battles helps. Or mentioning the challenges he's overcome. Other times, I just leave him be, and eventually, he comes around on his own. But lately, nothing's been working."
Rory looked up at the gym, determination flickering in his eyes. "Maybe we can try talking to him? I mean, if it's okay with you. We came all this way, and I hate to just give up."
Mellissa looked at Rory with a small look in her eye, surprised but touched by his persistence. "You'd really want to try?"
Aoki nodded firmly beside him. "Of course. We came here to challenge him, and we're not just doing this for a badge. If there's a way to help him get back on his feet, we want to give it a shot."
Mellissa hesitated for a moment, then gave them a small, hopeful smile. "Alright. If you're really up for it, you can try. His house is just up the street. He's always been kind to challengers… when he's in the right headspace."
Rory and Aoki exchanged determined looks before turning back to Mellissa. "Thanks, Mellissa," Rory said, his voice filled with resolve. "We'll give it our best shot."
As Mellissa gave them directions to her uncle's house, Rory and Aoki felt a renewed sense of purpose.
This isn't just about earning a badge anymore, it was about helping someone who had dedicated their life to training and battling Pokémon, but who had lost their way.
With a final wave, Mellissa watched them head up the street, her heart lightened by their determination. She knew it wouldn't be easy, but maybe, just maybe, Rory and Aoki could be the spark her uncle needed to get back on his feet again, as she followed them.
As they approached the modest house Mellissa had described, Rory and Aoki exchanged one last look of solidarity, exchanging nervous glances. The air was unusually cold around the house, likely the result of Frost's Ice-type Pokémon.
Mellissa gave them an encouraging nod. "Go on. I'm sure he's listening. Just… don't take it personally if he gets frustrated. He's been like this for a while."
Rory took a deep breath and knocked on the door. There was a long pause, silence hanging in the frosty air. Finally, they heard shuffling from inside, followed by a gruff voice.
"Whoever it is, go away!" Frost barked from inside, his voice muffled through the door. "I'm not taking challengers right now!"
Rory exchanged a glance with Aoki before replying. "Mr. Frost? We've come all the way from Pallet Town to challenge you. We're not here to push you, but—"
"I said GO AWAY!" Frost interrupted, his voice louder this time. There was a distinct bitterness in his tone, and they could hear him pacing angrily inside. "I don't care how far you've come. The gym is CLOSED, and I'll get out when I feel like it."
Aoki frowned, stepping closer to the door. "We understand you're not feeling up to it, but we came to Cerulean City to learn from you. You are like one of the best trainers in Kanto."
There was another pause, this time a longer one. For a moment, they thought they might have gotten through to him. But then Frost's voice returned, colder than ever. "Flattery won't work on me, kid. You want a badge? Go somewhere else. I don't care. And if you don't leave right now, I'll make you regret it."
Suddenly, the door burst open just a crack, and from the shadows inside, Rory and Aoki could see a flash of pale blue light. Frost stepped forward, but he remained hidden in the shadows, only a sliver of his face and body visible through the small opening of the door.
Beside him, they saw movement—a large, serpentine shape with glistening icy coral formations along its back. Glacioreef, his signature Pokémon, slid forward, its eyes glowing with icy energy. Frost's voice turned threatening.
Glacioreef (Ice/Water)
Description: Glacioreef is an ancient Pokémon believed to be responsible for the icy climate of the Seafoam Islands. It has coral-like structures growing from its body that generate freezing cold water currents, allowing it to summon blizzards.
Pokedex Entry: "Glacioreef drifts through the frozen waters of Seafoam Island, bringing icy winds with it. Legends say it is the spirit of the cold ocean itself, responsible for protecting the waters from invaders."
"Get out of here before I freeze you both solid. Glacioreef doesn't take kindly to trespassers."
Glacioreef hissed softly, its body shimmering as frost began to spread from its coral-covered body, small patches of ice forming on the ground around the door.
Aoki took a step back instinctively, her hand moving to her Pokéball, ready to defend herself. Rory stood his ground, though his heart raced as the temperature dropped noticeably.
But before either of them could react further, Mellissa stepped forward, her arms crossed. "Oh, Uncle, stop it. We all know you're bluffing."
Frost grumbled from behind the door, and the glow in Glacioreef's eyes flickered for a moment. The icy patches stopped spreading. "Bluffing, huh?" he muttered.
Mellissa raised an eyebrow, unimpressed. "Yeah, bluffing. You haven't actually frozen anyone in years. You wouldn't do that to two trainers who came here looking for a fair challenge. You're not like that. Not to mention I know Icey too well, he won't even harm a fly."
Rory and Aoki stood in tense silence as Frost remained still for a moment, then let out a long, frustrated sigh. The Glacioreef withdrew slightly, its icy glow fading as it backed away from the door, its mood shifting to a more timid one.
Frost opened the door a little wider but still didn't step out. His face was more visible now—older, weary, with deep lines of sadness etched into his features. His eyes, behind a tiny pair of glasses, though still sharp, held a weight that spoke of years of loneliness.
"Fine, you caught me," Frost said, sounding defeated. "I'm not going to freeze you. But that doesn't change the fact that I don't want to battle. I haven't for a while."
Aoki stepped forward, her voice gentler now. "We're not here just for the badge. We want to challenge you because we've heard you're a great trainer. Your experience, your strength—it's what we came for. People still look up to you, and we know you still have that spark in you."
Frost looked at her for a moment, then scoffed. "Spark, huh? That spark's been gone a long time. Ever since… well, it's just not there anymore." His voice was quiet now, almost a whisper.
Mellissa sighed, stepping closer to the door. "Uncle, they're not here to push you, but they believe in you. I believe in you. We all do. You're stronger than this."
Frost closed his eyes and leaned against the doorframe. He looked like he was carrying the weight of the world on his shoulders. "I just… don't feel like I can anymore. Every time I try, it feels like I'm failing. My heart's not in it, and without that, what's the point?"
Rory glanced at Aoki, then stepped forward, his voice sincere. "Maybe you just need a reminder of why you started in the first place. We all lose motivation sometimes, but that doesn't mean you're finished. You've still got more battles in you. You've still got more to teach."
Frost opened his eyes and looked at Rory, his expression softening just a little. "I don't know, kid… I'm not sure I have what it takes anymore."
Aoki smiled warmly, her voice filled with empathy. "We've all had moments like that. But I think once you're out there again, you'll remember why you love battling. We're not asking for anything you're not ready for. Just… give it one more shot. For yourself."
For a long moment, Frost remained silent, his gaze drifting to Icey the Glacioreef, who was watching him expectantly. He sighed heavily, rubbing the back of his neck.
"I'll think about it," he finally said, his voice tired but less harsh. "But I can't promise anything."
Mellissa smiled, grateful. "That's all we ask. We'll give you time, Uncle. But I think you'll find that once you get out there again, it won't be as hard as you think."
Frost nodded slowly, retreating back into his house. "Come back in an hour or two...We'll see."
As the door closed behind him, Rory and Aoki let out a collective breath they didn't realize they'd been holding. Mellissa turned to them, her expression a mixture of relief and gratitude.
"You two did great. I haven't seen him come this close to agreeing to battle in a long time," she said. "Thank you for helping."
Rory smiled, feeling hopeful. "We'll come back here later or tomorrow. Hopefully, he'll be ready."
Aoki nodded. "Yeah, and if not, we'll keep trying. He deserves to be back out there."
The three of them stood in the late afternoon sunlight, quiet for a moment, the cold air around Frost's house still lingering, but the warmth of hope starting to break through. They had made progress, and now they just had to wait and see if Frost would find his way back to the gym he loved.
