Chapter one:

Third person pov:

Republic city, Central City station

It has been 16 years since Lao was left at the orphanage, and today is his 16th birthday.

He is lithe 5' 9" with pearlescent skin, angular facial features, short raven black hair, the most defining feature is his eyes, the left is light jade green, and the right is crystal clear blue.

He is wearing a plain dark red shirt, dark green jacket, dark grey pants, dark grey flat cap, and dark brown shoes.

At this moment he is relieving people of their belongings, and by that meaning he is picking their pockets.

He was not doing this alone; he was with his friends Tia and Lee.

Tia is stocky 5' 12" with dark russet skin, round baby face, buzzed charcoal black hair, and grass green eyes.

He was wearing a plain white button up shirt, dark grey vest with a matching pants, and black shoes.

Tia was acting as the stall, the one who distracts the mark.

Lee is lanky 6' 0" with pale skin, thin face, shoulder length hair in a simple braid, and dark yellow eyes.

He was wearing a beige shirt with a dark brown leather jacket, and a pair of brown boots.

Lee was the pick pocket, the one who lifts the valuables.

Lao was the hand off, the person who takes the loot so the pick pocket keeps his hands free, and will not be caught red handed with the loot.

He was also the steer, the one who picks the mark.

Lao was looking around for a mark, he had to look for certain characteristics of a good mark, looks wealthy, seems lost or confused, and the most important point someone who they can out run if caught in the act.

He finally found his target after a good bit of searching, a heavy-set man wearing an expensive suit, a black handle bar moustache, slick back black hair, and a pair of wire frame glasses.

Lao made eye contact with Tia and Lee, and motioned with his head towards the mark

The two of them moved to the mark while Lao hovered near Lee, Lee slowly followed behind the target while Tia moved to intercept him at an angle.

Tia tripped and fell to the ground, letting his bag and its contents spill out across the ground.

While the man kneed down to help Tia pick up his stuff from the ground, Lee moved right behind him, and slipped some items from the man's pockets.

"Thank you ser for your help, and sorry to have taken up your time." Tia said, standing up with his bag

"No, its fine son." He replied, smiling politely.

Tia nodded to the man, and disappeared into the crowd.

Lee turned around and walked to Lao, bumping into him, and slipping the items into his hands.

He too disappeared into the crowd.

Lao pov:

Slipping the items into a hidden pocket in my pants, I walked for a little longer, and ducked into a nearby alley to check my loot and it seems I hit a great score.

A wallet that had 600 yuans, a pocket watch that looked to be actual sterling silver, and it had a name engraved on the edge of the back, it said, "Hatoshi Sato", oh my fricken spirits I feel good now, we just fleeced the richest man in Republic city.

After a successful money hunt, I headed to my junkyard to practice my earth bending, metal bending.

Six hours later:

Republic Junkyard

The junkyard was a sea of wrecked mobiles, broken appliances, and rusted out mobile parts.

I closing my eyes, reached out with my senses, and clenched my hands into tight fists. I could hear the metal around me crushing, scraping, and shearing.

Opening my eyes, and saw the metal around me has been turned into a fine dust.

Now the actual training begins, I force the dust around to form a storm around me, slashing my arm downward slicing clean through an old Sato mobile.

Crushing some of the storm into six paper thin manhole sized disks, and launched them at a cabbage corp mobile, slicing it into chunks.

Closing my eyes again, I imaged myself standing before me, clenched my hands and slamming foot into the ground, I opened my eyes to see a rusted red life size statue of myself standing before me.

I look pretty good if I do say myself.

This is my favorite earth bending trick, it was the best thing my crazy teacher taught me.

With what I had left of the storm, closed my eyes, breathed in, breathed out, and walked through the metal cloud. Forming it around myself like armor.

Opening my eyes I looked down at myself, the armor was perfectly seamless and conformed to my body like a second skin.

Grinning to myself, I released the armor letting the metal dust fall to the ground, and began to practiced my katas until my body felt like jelly.

Taking a breather, I decided to call it since the sun is starting to go down, and said she had something important to show me

Third person pov

Two hours later:

Orphanage

Yenay has been dreading this day for 16 years, but it must be done.

Hears a knock at the door," Come in." She says, staring at the door

Lao enters the room, "Hey, , how are you?" Lao asked, taking a seat in front of the desk.

"I am fine Lao, thank you." She says, giving him a warm smile.

"You have something to show me?" Lao asks, fiddling with some random objects on the desk.

Miss. Yenay reaches under the edge of the desk, a click was heard, and reaches into the secret compartment for the notes and pendant that was left all those years ago.

She placed the notes and pendant before Lao, "These were with you on the night you were given to us, I will leave you alone while you read these." She said, walking out of the room, and closing the door as she leaves.

Lao begins with the first note, and starts to read it.

To whoever is reading this note, the baby before you is named Lao, please take care of him, please watch out for him, please help him along his way, tell him that he was cherished and loved when he was brought into this world. May he forgive me. Give these notes and the pendant to him on his 16th birthday.

With his eyes brimming with tears, and trying to hold back crying. Lao begins to read the second letter.

Dear, Lao

I knew the minute I saw your eyes that you were the light of my eye, but I knew I could not give you the life that you needed. No matter what you do in the future or who you are in the future know that I will always be proud of you. I only hope that you do not hate me for leaving you.

Love, Mom

By the end of the letter Lao was looking at the flying boar pendant in his hand while silently crying.

Lao pov

I always wonder who my mother was, why she gave me up, and why did not she want me.

I wish could meet her, ask her why? Slowly I got angry and angrier the longer I thought about it to the point that I pushed the chair back, and punched the desk with a resounding crack.

came back in, taking me back to the chair, and began to set and disinfect my hand with a first aid kit from under her desk.

All I could hear was her saying, "Your mother loved you, you'll probably meet her one day, and she will be proud of you, as I am proud of you," she says, pulling me tightly into a hug

"You should head to bed its late, you can think more on this tomorrow." She said, releasing me from her embrace

Getting up and I started heading to my room, I stop and look back at , "Thank you for everything, and good night." I said, smiling glumly

"You're welcome and good night, Lao," she says, walking away to her room

I reach my room and strip down, and laid down in my bed.

Closed my eyes and drifted off.
