"Alright, everyone! It's time to commence operation 'Impress the Princess'! Are you with me!?"
"Yeah!"
"Hold it! Who decided we're accepting that invitation!?"
Darkness barked when everyone in the room started cheering.
Everyone was seated at the dining table with plates full of eggs and bacon, courtesy of Megumin since it was her turn to cook.
"Are you still against it, Darkness? I told you, you have nothing to worry about!"
Naruto waved the Crusader off, earning a nod from Kazuma.
"That's right, that's right. You have my full support in this endeavor, Naruto. After all, the princess requested to meet with me too! It feels nice to finally be recognized for my heroic deeds."
"It's especially because you're so on board that makes me the most worried, Kazuma…"
Darkness sighed, but eventually gave up for now and sat back down.
"I-I still can't believe the princess wants to meet you, Naruto-san… And you're an official Hero Candidate too!"
Yunyun was bubbling with excitement as she spoke, and the shinobi couldn't help but smile.
It was pretty exciting, now that he thought about it. With this sort of notoriety, he might be able to start making bigger differences in the world.
But it all started with making a good first impression with Princess Iris!
Darkness had tried, and failed, to convince them to decline the offer. Saying scary things like "one wrong word, and they'll cut your tongue off!" or "you guys don't have a shred of etiquette! We'll all be dead within the first conversation!" and whatnot.
The group had taken offense, of course, and had long since shunned the Crusader to the end of the table.
"What's so impressive about some princess anyway? You have an actual goddess here, you know?"
Aqua, who was also sulking from being left out of yesterday's events, called out from the other room where she lay on the couch in front of the firepit.
"...Anyways, let's get down to business!"
Naruto cheered, causing the Arch Priest to fume before disappearing behind the couch again.
"First and foremost, we have to clean. My poor mansion has collected some dust during our long adventure, and we've put it off for far too long."
Kazuma stated, earning a nod from the others.
"We also need to prepare a nice meal for the princess! Ah! W-we should probably get her a gift too! W-w-what do you princesses like!?"
Yunyun took out a notebook and started furiously scribbling down ideas.
"We should conduct a live performance to impress the princess! Naturally, Explosion magic will be the finale."
Megumin stated while pointing her staff towards the ceiling.
"Are you trying to destroy the mansion? Absolutely not."
Kazuma stated, earning a pout from the mage. He then fell back into his fantasy that involved the princess calling him that!
Times have certainly been rough these past few months, what with his constant battle with life and death situations and poverty. But this invitation from the princess marked the beginning to better times. He now had financial stability, great food, and recognition from high places.
He wouldn't allow anything to ruin this! Or anyONE!
"Hey, we really don't have to accept that invitation, guys… Really, they would understand if we just say we're busy adventuring!"
Darkness started panicking for some reason. Definitely not because of the expression that had grown on Kazuma's face.
"Ah, I see what's going on here."
Naruto suddenly said, a knowing smile on his face. The Crusader settled down and looked at the shinobi, unsure whether he was being genuine or not.
"Darkness is still jealous only Aqua got to wear the maid uniform. That's why she's trying to get in our way."
"!"
Darkness gawked, cheeks flaring as everyone made an "Oh" face.
"It all makes sense now."
"Yeah, she seemed pretty disappointed when she couldn't take Aqua's punishment."
"I-I-I-I'm not-! I mean, I didn't-!"
As Darkness became a sputtering mess, Aqua peeked over the couch with suspicious eyes.
"...Eroness."
"A-Aqua too!?"
Thoroughly defeated, the noblewoman buried her red face under her arms as she laid her head on the table.
"I don't know if the one Aqua used would fit her, though…"
Naruto pressed with his teasing, resulting in a stream of steam to rise from the female knight's head.
"I refuse to let Darkness destroy my uniform with her bulging muscles!"
Aqua barked, further adding to the noble woman's embarrassment.
Was she expecting to have to wear it again or something? For someone who complained nonstop at being "forced into service", that girl sure liked the maid outfit.
"Don't worry, I have a spare she can use."
Kazuma reassured with a keen thumbs up.
'I was mostly joking, but this guy seems prepared.'
Naruto thought while smiling wryly.
Or rather, why did Kazuma have a maid outfit on hand in the first place?
"A-ah! I know why we can't accept the invitation! Sylvia! Sylvia is still inhabiting Naruto's body! What are we going to do if she comes out while the princess is here!? Just the thought of it stresses me out so much, I can't even enjoy the idea of a vengeful spirit corrupting my body and soul from the inside!"
Darkness suddenly stood up and marched over to Naruto while pointing an accusing finger at his abdomen.
"You totally said 'enjoy' just now, didn't you? But anyways, you worry too much, Darkness. Kiki's got it taken care of, no problem! Right, Kiki?"
Naruto asked, and everyone looked at the Kitsune who was currently curled up on a coffee table in the corner of the room with her eyes shut.
"...She's just focusing. Anyways, back to our plans. We definitely need to dress up-"
A shadowy hand burst out of Naruto's chest and grabbed Darkness by the throat.
"Stay back, you dirty sow! This man is mine!"
Sylvia roared with glowing yellow eyes as she began to fully manifest from the shinobi's body. The room trembled from the spirit's presence, and even Aqua came running into the room as chairs were knocked over.
"Ack…! K-Kiki! Kiki, wake up!"
Naruto shouted as he helplessly watched the Chimera lift Darkness into the air. He tried, and failed to grip the spirit's arms.
Kiki jolted to her feet, her white tipped tail glowing just Aqua slammed her holy fist into Sylvia's face.
"God Blow!"
"Guh…!"
Sylvia flew back into the shinobi's body, causing Darkness to fall to the floor with a thud.
"D-Darkness! Are you okay?"
Kazuma asked as he inspected his party's tank for injuries. But aside from the small imprints on the woman's neck, she seemed perfectly fine.
"Huff! Huff! Y-you see what I'm talking about!? We can't possibly let the princess near this man! But just to be safe, I better not leave your side for even a second, Naruto."
Darkness stated between her ragged breaths.
"Why do I get the feeling you just want to be assaulted by Sylvia again?"
Kazuma asked, and the Crusader averted her gaze.
Naruto looked at his monster partner in concern. He didn't notice before, but she seemed to be in rough shape as she weakly looked up at him.
'This one apologizes, mine master… Mine power has been at work maintaining the seal and seems to have reached its limit.'
"W-wait… You mean the seal has been draining your mana this entire time!?"
Naruto sank to his knees in front of the Kitsune, whose eyes were drooping again. How could he have been so careless? To think Kiki had been working tirelessly these past few days just so he could put off dealing with Silvia…
But no more running.
"It's okay, Kiki… You can rest. I'll be fine as long as I don't go near anyone, right?"
"B-but then Sylvia might…"
Yunyun trailed off as Kiki's eyes closed.
Everyone took a step away from the shinobi, with Kazuma pulling Darkness back with him.
What was going to happen now?
They all watched anxiously as Naruto stood up and eventually turned to face them. But the boy seemed perfectly normal.
"Why are you all staring at me like I'm a ticking Megumin?"
Naruto asked with a tilted head.
"W-what's a ticking Megumin!? Kazuma said something like that before! Are you guys making fun of me!?"
Megumin barked and pounced on the shinobi, causing everyone to gasp as she latched onto his torso like a monkey. As if realizing what she had just done, the Crimson Demon ceased her assault and cautiously stepped back.
But nothing happened.
"Huh…? That's weird. Normally this is the part when Sylvia rushes out and attacks whoever comes near me."
Naruto muttered as he looked over his body for any signs of the spirit, but he was relieved to find not a single thing out of the ordinary.
"Hey, don't raise a flag. Also, Megumin! Don't go near him! Sylvia might just be recovering from Aqua's attack!"
Kazuma warned from behind his meat shield(Darkness).
…Hey, why were they all looking at him like that? He just watched that spirit lift Darkness into the air like she was weightless! Who knows what unspeakable things would happen to him if that spirit got a hold of him!?
"It's fine, see? Nothing's happening! Do you think Aqua's purification magic worked this time?"
Megumin asked as she poked Naruto's whisker marks, much to the shinobi's annoyance.
"As frustrating as it is to admit it, my purification didn't work. That spirit probably isn't coming out because they don't feel threatened right now."
Aqua huffed and crossed her arms. That dumb spirit was the only barrier standing between her and an endless supply of the Food of the Gods… Why did they have to show up on the one night she let the barrier down?
'Hm… Maybe if I drag them out into a fight, I can purify them with repeated God Blows!'
Whistling idly to herself, Aqua walked behind Kazuma and gave the boy a not-so-gentle nudge.
"Wha-HEY!"
"Whoops~!"
The goddess chirped as Kazuma stumbled into Naruto's arms, then proceeded to bring her fists up in preparation for battle.
But to the goddess's surprise, nothing happened once more.
Kazuma spun on his heel, glaring daggers at the goddess.
"WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH YOU!?"
"Eh? B-but I thought the spirit would come out if-"
"If what!? If you used your party member as bait!? Was it not enough that YOU were the one to put Naruto in this situation in the first place, you also want me to relapse into my PTSD!? If you can't even do your one strong suit which is purifying, then go buy some cleaning supplies from the store!"
Kazuma roared at the cowering Arch Priest, his face red as a tomato from pure rage.
Aqua's face inflated into a puffy pout as tears formed in the corners of her eyes before she took off running towards the stairs.
"Kazuma, you jerk!"
Naruto scratched at his whisker marks awkwardly. He definitely understood where Kazuma was coming from, but it sure was something else to watch the boy blow his top off like that.
"Hey, Kazuma… Don't you think that was a bit much?"
Darkness said as she walked towards the boys, but the moment she was within arm's reach of Naruto-
"You again!? You're just a glutton for punishment, aren't you! Stay away!"
Sylvia barked as they violently shook the Crusader in the air.
"D-do your worst! Even if you take control of Naruto's body to do unspeakable things to me in front of my party members, I-I won't give up!"
Arms spread, Darkness made such a declaration in front of those party members.
"H-h-hey! D-don't give them ideas, Eroness!"
Naruto stammered when Sylvia paused, looked at him, then grinned maliciously. He could already feel the influence she had on his arms starting to kick in.
"Huh… Maybe Sylvia only feels threatened towards grown women?"
Kazuma noted from his new defensive position behind the two Crimson Demons.
"...Oi, Kazuma. Explain why Sylvia didn't react when I was standing next to Naruto."
Megumin muttered darkly, her crimson eyes glowing ominously. Her eyebrow twitched when the boy suspiciously averted his gaze.
"Hey, why are you looking away? Tell me why Sylvia won't react when a perfectly grown and mature woman is standing next to Naruto?"
"W-we don't have time for this right now, Megumin! We need to do something about Sylvia! Ah! W-w-what should we do!? They're stripping Darkness-san's armor off!"
Yunyun panicked while wavering her arms and pointing towards the blonde duo. If only she knew holy magic… Light of Saber would probably work on spirits, but it was too destructive to use indoors and she also didn't want to risk hurting them.
"...Maybe it's an age thing? You might be under Naruto's strike zone, which Sylvia can pick up on or something. Anyways, Yunyun's right. We should probably go get Aqua before Sylvia forces Naruto to do something amazing."
Kazuma mumbled and was about to head towards the stairs when he heard someone cry out, and he turned around to see Yunyun stumble right into Naruto/Sylvia.
The spirit reacted instantly, using the two right arms at their disposal to grab the Crimson Demon and start pulling on her clothes.
"N-nooooo!"
"You fiend! Take out your pent up lust on me! You only just got my armor off!"
"K-K-Kikiiii! I'm sorry, but please wake up!"
Yunyun, Darkness, and Naruto all screamed as they struggled against the cackling spirit.
"I see… So Sylvia only seems to feel threatened by mature women."
Kazuma noted as he watched with a neutral expression, his eyes working overdrive to absorb all of the details that were presented to him.
That is, until a teary-eyed Megumin pounced on him.
"Ack! Get off of me, Megumin! Why are you so angry!?"
"B-because…!"
–And so, preparations began.
Seeing as Kiki was going to be out of commission until the princess's arrival, Naruto took to the streets of Axel by himself. He took the long, but mostly empty road towards the Eris Church.
He'd gotten distracted helping out the Eris members with some broken glass the other day, but his original intent was to pray to the goddess in search of guidance after making his offering.
Now sitting in an empty prayer room, Naruto fell into a meditative position before the statue of the Goddess of Luck and closed his eyes.
'Hey Eris, it's me again. I hope you enjoyed my offering. How's Eddy doing? She's not giving you too much trouble up there, is she? Anyways… You're probably already aware, but I got into some trouble. I've been possessed by the spirit of a Demon King Army General, and not even Aqua can purify me. She said something about me not being able to let go or something…'
Naruto thought before a frown crept onto his face.
'I think I know why. I feel like I could have done more for Sylvia, but gave up because of how far gone she'd seemed. But deep down, I knew there was a shred of humanity left in them. Now that I've been possessed, I subconsciously rejected the purification because I know I need to make amends. But… How do I do that? Sylvia isn't trying to do unspeakable things to me right now, even with Kiki absent, but what now? Even if I somehow manage to hold a conversation with them, I don't even know where to start…'
Letting out a sigh, Naruto opened his eyes and looked up at the graceful statue of the goddess. If only he could speak to Eris in person again… It had been nice to see her again back in Alcanretia, although the circumstances could have been better.
The sound of something falling caught his attention, and the shinobi turned his head to see a white flower had fallen from a bouquet that was sitting on a wooden table. Standing up, Naruto walked over and picked the flower up before placing it back in place.
It was then he noticed a plaque on the wall that read:
Let compassion guide thy hand and heart, for in aiding others, thou shalt find thy own salvation. In the darkest moments, it is love that conquers, not the sword nor the shield. Blessed are they who give without expectation, for they shall know the true peace of the soul. Seek not glory, but the smile of those you help, for therein lies the treasure of the gods.
"..."
A knowing smile grew on Naruto's face as he read the scripture.
Walking back to the center of the room, the boy fell into his meditative position once more.
Regardless of how this came about, he was given a second chance to make amends with Sylvia. He'd make the best of it.
. . .
When Naruto opened his eyes again, he found himself standing inside his inner world. The familiar sewer walls were-
Hang on, this wasn't a sewer.
"Uh… Kurama? What's going on here?"
Naruto asked aloud as he looked around what seemed to be the inner walls of a stone castle, complete with torches and red carpet that lined the hallway.
Various portraits of monsters and knights in gnarly looking armor hung from the walls.
All in all, Naruto was very unsettled by the change in scenery. But what brought on this change? How was it even possible?
In the distance, he suddenly heard the sounds of laughter. Naruto steeled himself and started making his way down the hallway, down a spiral staircase, until finally he exited into a wide open courtyard where he was met with an amazing sight.
Kurama lay in the center of the courtyard next to what appeared to be a table that was being covered by an umbrella. Sitting at the table was none other than Sylvia, who adorned their original red velvet dress and blood red heels.
Naruto's eye twitched as he approached the laughing duo. This spirit was making his life miserable, and his tailed beast partner was just sitting here chatting it up with them like old friends?
"...Oi, what is going on here?"
The moment the words left his mouth, Sylvia's shoulders stiffened. They turned around and a shiver crawled up Naruto's spine as their yellow eyes met his. While nowhere near on the level of their past encounters, there was still a hidden measure of lewdness sitting behind those eyes.
"Ah, welcome, Naruto Uzumaki. You'll have to excuse me, I was just making acquaintance with Kurama-san here. We have a lot in common, it turns out. Please, sit. We have much to discuss."
Sylvia welcomed while gesturing towards the empty chair on the other side of the table.
Leaving aside the former general's surprising lucidity, Naruto looked up at Kurama questioningly.
"During my initial confrontation with this spirit, I found their company to be quite engaging. As a matter of fact, Sylvia was the one to make these changes to this realm. While I have grown accustomed to the sewer chamber, this change of scenery is amiable."
The nine tailed fox admitted with a shrug.
"R-right…"
Naruto stuttered before turning back towards the Chimera in question.
Well, he was here to confront Sylvia. Might as well go along with this nonsense for now.
"Why are you acting normal all of a sudden? I half expected you to attack me the moment I spoke up… Oh, thank you."
Naruto asked as he sat down on the empty chair, thanking the spirit when they offered him a cup of tea and some cookies. Where had those come from?
"As you are well aware, I was forced to combine with the Orcs after our fateful meeting. Their venereal nature left a lingering influence on my very soul. So much so, I couldn't help but remain in this world so that I could meet with you again. While my actions may seem abrasive, I assure you, it comes from a place of affection."
Sylvia replied with a hand on their red-stained cheek, yellow irises glowing as they leaned forward.
"I simply adore you, Naruto Uzumaki. I will make you mine. Even if it takes the rest of your mortal life to persuade you."
With their piece said, Sylvia leaned back in their chair and crossed their arms.
"W-well… I don't swing that way, so I'm afraid you're wasting your time. Oh, these are actually pretty good."
Naruto stated before taking a bite out of a cookie, finding it surprisingly tasty. He was washing it down with a sip of tea when Sylvia beamed.
"That makes me happy, as I manifested them with my very essence."
"Pfft…!?"
Naruto spewed the tea out of his mouth. What did that even mean!? Did he just drink her spiritual body fluids or something!? What did that make the cookies!?
"Oh, don't be so dramatic. Our souls are basically already one, anyway."
Sylvia rolled their eyes as the shinobi did his best to wipe the taste from his tongue.
"T-tell me that before you try to feed me your spirit spit, damn it!"
Naruto fumed as he settled back down. What was done is done, and it didn't seem to be doing anything to him anyways… But it was still gross.
"About our souls… It feels like you've stopped the merging. Does it have something to do with you not being so crazy right now? Are you regaining your senses?"
The blonde asked, because he'd been wondering why the Chimera was acting so sane. Also, with Kiki out of commission right now, it left his soul in a vulnerable state. He was honestly surprised Sylvia hadn't been attacking him this entire time.
"Yes, Kurama-san's power has been slowly eroding at the Orc's influence on my soul. I now only seem to have jealous outbursts whenever you come into contact with those who would try to steal you away from me. I do apologize for the inconvenience, love. I simply cannot stand it when another woman touches you."
Sylvia said regrettably while clasping their hands together apologetically.
"You call those jealous outbursts…? You nearly caused me to do unspeakable things to both Darkness and Yunyun! Also, I need you to apologize to Megumin. I have a feeling she's going to try and get back at me later…"
Naruto barked before saying the last bit a tad sheepishly.
"I'd sooner subjugate myself to purification than apologize to a Crimson Demon."
Sylvia responded coldly, prompting the shinobi to scratch at his whisker marks.
That made sense, considering the former general had waged war against the Crimson Demon Village and lost countless comrades in said bloodbaths.
Naruto blinked when he realized something.
"Wait, I thought you said you couldn't do anything, Kurama!"
"I said that my power couldn't repel them. As that fledgling Kitsune stated, your soul has too many cracks for them to hold onto. Not that I particularly mind the entertainment this situation has brought forth. I will admit that your struggle has been amusing to watch thus far."
This damn fox…!
Relenting a sigh, Naruto leaned back in his chair. If Kurama wanted to be a spectator, then fine. He'd figure this out on his own.
'No, that's not right… I'm not alone in this fight.'
Naruto thought, thinking back to the Eris Order scripture. A confident smile growing on his face, the shinobi made a boisterous declaration.
"I may not be able to accept your feelings, Sylvia, but in the name of my nindo, I promise to bring you peace so that you can move onto the after life without regrets! So long as it's within my power, I'll do whatever I can to help you!"
That's right, the Goddess of Luck constantly had his back. It had to have been a sign that Eris was watching over him, and led him to that scripture. His mission couldn't have been more clear.
Maybe he really should become a member of the Eris Order.
"Ah… How kind! As expected of the man I set my eyes on! Your boldness has inspired me as well! I promise you, that I will persuade you to make the final leap to make our souls one! As for my first request, I have something in mind right now…!"
Sylvia cooed, and it seemed they couldn't hold back any longer as they lunged for the blonde from the other side of the table.
…Huh? That's weird. That was supposed to set a clear boundary and expectation. Why did it seem to be having the opposite effect?
'Eris…? Eris!?'
Naruto thought as he ran from the lusty Chimera for dear life.
Kurama chuckled as they watched the game of cat and mouse. These peaceful days were about to become quite entertaining.
Naruto sighed as he walked up to the mansion.
At least he didn't have to worry about Sylvia merging their souls without his consent anymore.
"But I wish that damn fox would do something instead of just laughing… umm… huh?"
The moment Naruto opened the door, he was greeted by something amazing.
Darkness, clad in a maid uniform that was clearly one size too small, greeted him at the door with a bow.
"W-welcome home, master."
The noblewoman stuttered as she leaned forward in a formal bow, her arms pressing ever so slightly against her bust.
In the background, Kazuma could be seen standing with his arms crossed. The boy was watching with keen eyes, nodding his head approvingly.
"...What are you doing?"
Naruto finally asked with a deadpan expression.
Darkness blushed furiously and immediately turned towards her party leader to unleash her wrath.
"I thought you said this was a duty of maids from your home country! Are you messing with me…!?"
"Ack! M-my head is going to pop! S-something's leaking! I'm sorry!"
While Darkness facepalmed Kazuma with her death grip, Naruto walked past the two while wiping a dribble of blood from his nose.
Those two really got along.
A Few Days Later…
"I-I still think this is a bad idea…"
"We'll be fine, I promise. Also, stop saying that while scooting closer to me."
The group stood before a pair of large wooden doors inside of the largest mansion in Axel; the Dustiness manor. On the other side of those doors was the princess of Belzerg.
"You're sure you're okay, Kiki? I-I can hold you if you want-kyuu~!"
Darkness made a strange noise as her hand was skillfully smacked by the Kitsune's tail. She was wearing a pure white dress with her hair tied in a long braid that hung down the right side of her chest.
'This one cannot express how deep these regrets are, master of mine… Now that mine power has been fully recovered, I promise to remain vigilant for twice the duration!'
Kiki said while looking up at the shinobi with a look of shame. She agreed to wear a collar with an black bow that matched the darker portions of her fur.
"That's okay, Kiki. I'm sorry to ask you to use your power again, but it'll only be during this meal."
Naruto assured the fox by patting her head affectionately, earning a jealous mope from the Crusader. While he may have found the trigger to Sylvia's "outbursts", he didn't want to risk anything during the meeting.
He was wearing his usual black suit and orange tie, seeing as it was his favorite. Darkness had tried to convince him to wear a normal tie, but the shinobi had been adamant.
"I hope you're right, Naruto. Because this meal better go well. Darkness's family name is on the line, after all."
Kazuma said in a scolding tone. He was wearing his now trademark black tuxedo. He wanted to buy a new suit for this occasion, but Vanir said the money from their deal wouldn't be ready until the end of the month.
"Kazuma…"
Darkness was genuinely touched at her party member's concern for her family's name. While that man had his flaws, many of them in fact, he really did come through when it counted.
"Also, if all goes well, the princess is going to invite me to the castle to become her adopted older brother and call me onii-sama. So everyone needs to be on their best behavior."
Kazuma added, causing the female knight's expression to turn sour.
"...Give me back the impressive thoughts I had about you just now. Also, you should just stand guard out here."
Darkness stated while holding her hand out expectantly, which was immediately smacked.
"How rude! I was serious about upholding your family's image! I even confiscated the smoke bombs that Megumin had snuck in just now!"
Kazuma barked, and all eyes turned towards the mage who quickly averted her gaze.
"I thought I already searched your body for hidden items! Are you hiding anything else!? Tell me!"
Darkness growled while gripping the Crimson Demon's face, nearly lifting her off of the ground.
"Ack…! It's gonna break! M-my head is gonna break! O-okay! I stashed some fire powder in the bra I gifted Yunyun!"
Megumin, who was wearing a black sleeveless strapped dress, desperately pointed towards her fellow Crimson Demon.
"Eh?"
Yunyun's pink dress was also sleeveless, which allowed her to turn around and peek at her bra. She panicked upon finding a small bottle that contained a red powder and turned towards Megumin with teary eyes.
"Ah! There really is fire powder in here! You said this was a gift because you noticed my bras were getting too tight!"
"It's your own damn fault for showing off those meat sacks in front of me! Of course I'm going to get ideas! Now quick! Gimme those bottles so I can make my grand entrance!"
Megumin barked and squoze out of Darknesses grasp before creeping towards Yunyun while making strange hand gestures with her hands.
"M-Megumin is making a scary face! S-stay back! Nooooo!"
"Ah! Don't just watch, you hopeless man! Stop her, Kazuma!"
As the group struggled to pry Megumin from Yunyun, Naruto laughed awkwardly as he turned towards Aqua who had been strangely quiet up until now.
"I hope your silence doesn't mean you're planning something nefarious like Megumin, Aqua."
"Don't compare me to that child, Naruto. I'll have you know I'm getting my supplies ready for the sand art I'm going to make for the princess on the spot!"
Aqua declared and revealed a pouch that contained said supplies. She was wearing a white dress similar to that of Darkness's, only she was also wearing a pair of thin white gloves that went to her elbows.
"Oh yeah, I forgot you're good at that kind of thing. I put the straw and paper frog in a special scroll in my room. Maybe I'll get another desk and put them out on display."
Naruto noted while tapping his chin thoughtfully.
"I-is that so… I mean, of course you would keep those sacred treasures. You received them from a beautiful goddess, after all. Perhaps I'll make you something else to add to that display."
Aqua said and looked away while crossing her arms under her bust, but she seemed to be rather pleased for some reason.
Suddenly, the doors began to open which prompted the entire group to cease their prattling and fall in line.
"The princess will see you now."
A servant greeted them before stepping to the side to reveal the large banquet hall. A young girl with long blonde hair sat at the end of the dining table. Adorned with a white dress with golden trims, she held an air of curiosity to her young features as she took in their entrance with her bright blue eyes.
'So that's princess Iris…'
Naruto thought as the servant led them into the room. He then noted the two women that stood by the sides of the princess like guards.
The woman on the right appeared to be a knight, if the saber buckled to her side was anything to go by. She too had blonde hair, but it was cut short and barely touched her shoulders. Coupled with the white tuxedo she wore, the female knight held a very tomboyish appearance. Her blue eyes were stern as she eyed each of them as potential threats.
The girl on the left was undoubtedly a mage, as her fingers were adorned with various rings that emitted a faint trail of mana. Her hair was a dirty blonde that fell just past her shoulders in length. Although her expression seemed more relaxed, her blue eyes also seemed to be sizing the adventurers up.
Naruto was impressed, the princess had good guards. He would make sure to compliment them when making his introduction.
But it seemed Darkness was quick to take the initiative as she stepped forward.
"Sorry for the wait, princess Iris. These are my friends and my adventuring comrades, Naruto Uzumaki and Kazuma Satou. My friends, this is the first princess of the kingdom, her highness Iris."
Darkness greeted with a bow before gesturing towards the rest of the group, making sure to give them all a look as a reminder to behave themselves.
Naruto opened his mouth to speak when he was, yet again, beaten to the punch as Aqua took a step forward and performed a perfect curtsy.
"My name is Aqua, an Arch Priest. Pleased to meet you, Princess Iris. Now, I shall perform a greeting party trick-"
"P-please excuse my friend, your highness! I need to have a word with my comrade! A-Aqua…! Stop pulling on my hair!"
Darkness swooped in and grabbed Aqua's hand before pulling her to the side. The goddess didn't seem to appreciate the interruption as she tugged on the knight's braid.
Megumin took advantage of her party member's distraction and pulled a cloak out from underneath her dress. She must have tied it to her leg to hide it from Darkness's body check.
"M-Megumin, can I have a word?"
"Ah! Yunyun, you traitor! Are you still mad that I groped you just now? I swear, I was only trying to get the fire powder!"
Thankfully, Yunyun intervened just as her fellow Crimson Demon was about to flick her newly adorned cape.
This left Naruto and Kazuma standing before the princess of the kingdom.
'Poor Darkness has her hands full… Thank you for helping, Yunyun.'
Naruto thought, and he was finally going to make his grand introduction when the princess whispered something into the ear of her female guard.
"Lowly plebeian, don't leer at royalty with such lewd eyes. Be grateful that you are having this meeting to dine together with royalty. Now please, lower your head and don't meet my eyes while making your greeting so you can hurry and tell me your stories of adventure… The princess said."
The white-suited woman said, causing Naruto to flinch.
He wasn't staring, was he? Also, lewd eyes? What was she-
'Ah…'
A bead of sweat rolled down Naruto's cheek when he saw Kazuma's irked expression. It seemed he had another problem on his hands as Mount Kazuma seemed to be on the verge of eruption.
"Change."
Kazuma simply said as Darkness rushed in.
"Your highness Iris, please wait for a moment! My comrades are tense because of their excitement! Allow me to speak with them for a moment!"
Darkness pleaded as she dragged Kazuma into their party's huddle, all while Kazuma took his turn to tug on the woman's braid.
Naruto resisted the urge to chuckle. It seemed his time had finally come to save the day.
Placing a hand on his chest above his heart, the shinobi leaned forward in a bow.
"Your highness, it is my pleasure to make your acquaintance. I am Naruto Uzumaki, adventurer from the town of Axel, and your newly appointed Hero Candidate. A title that is truly an honor to receive, and one that I vow to use to bring glory to the kingdom."
As the words left his mouth, Darkness ceased her scolding and looked at the ninja with gaping surprise. That had been a flawless introduction… She knew he was practicing, but that man really was acting like a completely different person!
"Hm. So this is the famous upcoming adventurer that has been the talk of the capital. My name is Claire Field Symphonia."
The now named Claire said when the princess fervently tugged on her shoulder and pointed at the shinobi's feet.
"T-that is an impressive creature, Uzumaki-dono. I believe it to be a Kitsune? The princess is requesting to pet its notoriously soft fur."
"Ah, this is one of my partners, Kiki. She does not normally like it when people touch her fur… B-but I am sure she will allow an exception for the princess!"
Naruto quickly added when Iris's face fell, only for it to immediately swell with excitement when he finished. The boy sent a pleading look towards Kiki, who only seemed hesitant for a moment before she hopped on the table and made her way over to the princess.
Iris nervously raised her hand and placed it on the head of the mythical beast.
"Ah…"
A sound filled with wonder escaped her lips, and a blush proceeded to form on her cheeks when she realized her blunder.
"Thank you for allowing me this moment, Naruto Uzumaki-dono… The princess says. Now tell me, Uzumaki-dono. Is it true that you defeated Kyouya Mitsurugi-dono?"
Claire asked while watching the retreating Kiki longfully, seemingly regretful to not have been allowed the privilege to pet the fox as well.
'Crap! I let my guard down and ran my mouth! At this rate, that stupid shonen protagonist is going to hog the limelight!'
Kazuma thought while grinding his teeth.
It wasn't his fault the world kept disappointing him time after time! But that didn't matter right now, he needed to get his act together or the princess would favor Naruto over him and he could kiss the "onii-sama" position goodbye!
"Ah, yes well, Mitsurugi-san and I once partook in a sparring match. I was fortunate enough to come out on top, but I knew my friend was holding back. Who knows what the outcome would have been had he been going all out. Hahaha!"
Naruto responded with a bout of hearty laughter, which seemed to please the female knight.
"I thought so. Even with the rumored accomplishments under your belt, I find it hard to believe that the handsome Mitsurugi lost to an adventurer in the town of beginners."
Claire said when Iris tugged on her sleeve, and after hearing what the princess had to say, the white-suited woman spoke again.
"The princess would love to hear about those rumored accomplishments, if you would."
"Yes, of course. But first, let me introduce you to my friend and business partner, Kazuma Satou. He is yet another accomplished adventurer in these parts. I'm sure you would enjoy his tales as well."
Naruto said and placed a hand on Kazuma's shoulder just as the boy was about to speak up.
'Naruto…'
Kazuma thought as he looked at the shinobi, who winked at him before everyone took a seat.
Naruto knew his friend, as well as what the guy hoped to achieve during this meeting with the princess. While he didn't expect the princess to invite any of them to the royal castle, the shinobi wanted to make sure Kazuma was acknowledged for the troubles he'd gone through as well.
That, and Kazuma was good at recapping events.
. . .
"–and so, at the sacrifice of Asahimaru, we managed to defeat the Demon King Army General Sylvia. I still miss that Wizard Predator to this day, and keep a memento on my shelf in remembrance of my partner."
Kazuma finished while wiping a stray tear from the corner of his eye.
"Amazing! I've heard all sorts of adventuring stories, but you're the first person I know of that fights like this! Especially against the Dullahan! How did you come up with such strategies on the spot? That's what her highness said."
Claire recited as the princess beamed at the storyteller.
"Because, your highness, I am the kind of man who strives to better himself everyday by challenging opponents stronger than myself. I resort to such tactics to overcome these seemingly impossible challenges."
Kazuma replied while nodding his head sagely.
'I know I asked for this, but Kazuma's acting a little…'
Naruto thought with a twitching eyebrow. While Kazuma was technically telling the truth, there were certain aspects of his stories that seemed to stretch the truth in his favor. Of course, this left a mighty big impression on the princess and her guards, and the boy seemed to be getting a little carried away now.
"And what of you, Uzumaki-dono? Kazuma Satou has mentioned you quite a bit in these tales, but what of your accomplishments? Is it really true that you soloed the Mobile Fortress Destroyer? The princess says."
Claire asked, and all eyes turned to the shinobi.
"I must admit that the rumors are an exaggeration, your highness. The entire town played a part in the defeat of the Mobile Fortress Destroyer. I merely dealt the final blow with the aid of my other nine tailed fox companion that is currently sealed inside of me, Kurama."
Naruto replied and gestured towards his torso.
"So it's true that there is a demon fox sealed inside of you… Is it to be trusted?"
Claire inquired, her sword hand twitching ever so slightly. This did not go unnoticed by the shinobi, and so he decided to proceed with caution.
Originally, he was going to formally introduce Kurama. But it seemed that would have to wait until he gained their trust.
"Yes, Kurama is not just my ally, but an ally to humanity. For you see, it would be troubling for him if humanity were to go extinct. He enjoys watching human interactions, and very much prefers peace."
That last part was a bit of a stretch, but with Kurama's recent development thanks to a certain masked devil, Naruto felt like that explanation was justifiable.
"Very well. What did you two do before becoming adventurers? The princess asks."
Claire recited, and Kazuma gave Naruto a look, indicating that he would be the one to answer.
Naruto nodded and relaxed into his seat. While he had definitely improved his etiquette, it was kinda tiring speaking this way for long durations.
Being high class was tough.
"My friend and I come from a far away country, and we were defenders of the homes of our families. We would train our skills day in and day out, protecting our home from crisis and disasters. It was a miserable job that no one would understand here nor appreciate."
Kazuma described with a solemn expression on his face.
'What is that guy going on about?'
Naruto thought with a raised eyebrow, as this was the first he was hearing about Kazuma's past.
What Kazuma just said perfectly described Naruto's own past, but didn't that guy come from some peaceful country called Japan?
The shinobi looked at Aqua, who was sending Kazuma a flat gaze. Naruto decided he would seek out the goddess for more information later.
–The conversation continued as they ate their meal.
Aqua presented a marvelous sand picture of the princess that almost looked like a black and white photo. It was quite impressive, and resulted in the princess rewarding the bluenette with a valuable gem.
Darkness was beginning to feel at ease. With Naruto's constant inputs that were comparable to even that of an experienced aristocrat, she only needed to worry about her own party members. But aside from Kazuma's obvious exaggerations, and Aqua's constant wine refills, they were behaving quite well.
Megumin was also acting well-behaved, all things considered. If the little girl wasn't eating her food, she would play with the Crusader's braid while listening to the conversation.
But it would all go downhill when Claire asked an incredible question.
"I can't help but notice the subtle looks Lady Dustiness is sending the adventurer Naruto Uzumaki-dono. Are the two of you involved? The princess asks… But I must also wonder if Lady Dustiness, who is known for rejecting the advances of multiple nobles, has set her sights on an adventurer?"
Claire asked while glancing between the two blonde adventurers.
Naruto and Darkness blinked, looked at each other, before their faces turned crimson red.
'Ugh… Their reaction makes me want to throw up.'
Kazuma thought and was about to clear the air so they could get back to better topics(his exploits) when someone spoke up.
"I'm afraid you are mistaken, your highness. In fact, you couldn't be more wrong about those two."
Yunyun stated with a neutral expression, shocking everyone at the table.
"You dare speak to her highness in such a fashion!? Who are you?"
After snapping out of her surprise, Claire became enraged at the Crimson Demon's bluntness.
"I-I humbly apologize! My comrade said something rude! She is normally the most well behaved one, so even I'm surprised by her sudden outburst…!"
Darkness blurted out while bowing her head repeatedly. In fact, she nearly forgot Yunyun was even here due to the girl's continued silence. Did that question hit a nerve?
"A-ah! Yes, I am very sorry!"
As if realizing what she had just done, Yunyun blushed and joined in on the apology.
Naruto scratched at his whisker marks as he watched the scene play out before him. That had been strange, but the princess didn't seem too disturbed by his party member's words. If anything, she almost seemed a little… disappointed?
"I will overlook this, but only if I hear a proper story from Naruto Uzumaki! While I enjoyed the stories from Kazuma Satou, I feel as though Naruto Uzumaki has been avoiding the subject! A man must be humble, but he is being humble to the point of secrecy! Did you actually do anything notable on your own? Or did you simply steal the spotlight at the last second? The princess inquires."
Claire responded, and Naruto rubbed the back of his head.
Perhaps he was going a little too hard on the modest side.
"Very well, your highness. Let me tell you a story from my home country-"
"...No! I wish to hear about your rumored exploits in this kingdom like Kazuma Satou."
Iris's soft voice suddenly came out, interrupting Naruto and surprising the group.
"With all due respect, Iris-sama, my friend has plenty of stories that I'm sure you'll find interesting."
Darkness stood and spoke on Naruto's behalf, as the shinobi was still shocked that the princess was speaking on her own behalf.
"I still find it hard to believe that Mitsurugi-sama lost to a beginner adventurer. What is his class? What level is he? Kindly elaborate."
Iris continued and stared up at the older woman with fierce eyes.
Kazuma averted his gaze. He was planning on bragging about his own victory over Mitsurugi, but decided against it in fear of being inquired over the details of the fight.
After all, if the princess was questioning Naruto, how would she react if she found out the details of his own pitiful adventurer's card.
Darkness was about to respond when Naruto cleared his throat.
"I hold the class of Adventurer, your highness. I am currently level fifty-three."
"!?"
Naruto resisted the urge to smirk when he saw the looks on everyone's faces. The only one that wasn't surprised was Yunyun, but that much was to be expected. After all, they were party members.
With the amount of high leveled monsters he'd been killing, of course his level had skyrocketed. In fact, he gained nearly ten levels just the previous week from the Demon King Army minions and Orcs he'd slain.
"P-pardon my impudence, but may I see your adventurer's card? It is hard to believe that an adventurer with such a high level still resides in the town of beginners… and to hold the weakest class while having so many achievements is a little…"
Claire asked with her hand outstretched towards the shinobi, and he was about to reach into his pocket and give it to her when he noticed Yunyun's hands were trembling.
Was she still upset over them thinking he and Darkness were involved?
'Well… there goes my spotlight.'
Kazuma thought, his expression deflating. At least he was able to get some recognition for once. But as soon as they saw Naruto's adventurer's card and all of the crazy powerful skills he had-
'Wait a second… didn't Naruto recently learn Drain Touch? Wouldn't it be troubling if they found out that he has a Lich skill?'
His face going pale, Kazuma grabbed Naruto's shoulder just as the guy brandished the little piece of paper.
"Hold on, my friend. I can't help but feel like her highness has overstepped. Naruto has done a lot for us and this kingdom. Just ask anyone in town, they'll tell you just how great of an adventurer he is."
"Kazuma…"
Naruto was touched by his friend's sentiment, but it seemed it was Kazuma who had overstepped as Claire's face turned red with anger.
But before the white-suited woman could unleash her fury, Yunyun slammed her hands on the table.
"T-that's right! Naruto-san has worked too hard to be questioned for his accomplishments! He's going to be the hero that defeats the Demon King! So apologize! Apologize to the future hero of mankind!"
Yunyun fumed while pointing an accusing finger towards the princess.
"..."
Naruto lowered his head. While he really appreciated his friend's defending him, it meant the world to him, really… He wasn't sure if this was going to bode well with the other party.
Surely enough, Claire looked like she was ready to draw her sword and cut them down where they stood.
But it was Iris who defiantly talked back.
"...I won't apologize. If that man has accomplished all that you say he has, if those rumors are all true, then let him explain how he managed to land the final blow on all of those high bounty targets. If he can't, then that means he's a conman who does nothing but lie-"
The princess was cut off when Darkness suddenly slapped her lightly across the face. Iris blinked, seemingly in disbelief at what just happened.
"Lady Dustiness, you dare-!?"
Claire drew her sword, ready to dismember the limb responsible for harming the first princess.
The sword came down and there was a scream-
It happened in a flash.
One moment, Naruto was looking down at the ground on one side of the table, and the next he was standing in between Darkness and Claire with his arm raised.
"…?"
Claire's breath was caught in her throat as she looked up at the cold pair of blue eyes staring down at her. She could have sworn they'd flashed red, but it was only brief.
But that was the least of her worries, as this man was currently grasping her sword with his bare hand. She tried to move her weapon, but it wouldn't budge.
Blood seeped from the cut and trailed down the sword.
"Please excuse my comrades, Claire-san. We have been through a lot together, and have thus grown quite protective of each other. But even if they stepped out of line, violence should not have been the answer here."
Naruto said in a scolding fashion, his eyes softening as he removed his hand. They were further surprised as the gash began to steam and heal in an instant.
Darkness glanced up at Naruto, a tint of red staining her face, but she said nothing to the shinobi as she leaned down and gently touched Iris's cheek.
"Your highness, Iris. Forgive my impudence, but that isn't something you should say to someone who has valiantly fought for this kingdom. That man has been acknowledged by not only myself and my family, but also the inhabitants of this town. He has no obligation to be subject to such interrogations."
Darkness spoke in a calm and soothing voice like a mother educating her child.
Naruto was captivated as he watched this new side of the normally hopeless Crusader. Was this gentle person really Darkness?
Shaking his head, it seemed Claire was still unconvinced. It would be troubling if Darkness were to get in trouble because of him…
If that were the case-
"Why don't I prove myself here and now? Care to spar with me, Claire-san?"
Naruto suggested and gestured towards the open side of the dining hall.
"Very well. I would very much like to see what our kingdom's newest Hero Candidate is capable of."
The female knight agreed as she followed the boy away from the others.
There was more than enough space in the room for a light sparring session, but everyone moved to the opposite side of the table to watch.
Naruto and Claire stood on opposite ends of the room, both in casual stances.
"Are you sure you do not need a weapon, Naruto Uzumaki-dono?"
Claire asked as she wiped the now dried blood from her pristine weapon.
"Yes. While I sometimes use knives during combat, my main source of damage output are my two fists."
Naruto assured the noble before dropping into a stance.
"So be it."
Claire muttered before her body turned into a blur.
'She's pretty fast… but not as fast as Mitsurugi, or even Vanir.'
The shinobi thought as he sidestepped a thrust.
You would think one would at least sheath their sword during a simple sparring match, but oh well.
Come to think of it, he couldn't let his precious suit become damaged. It was a gift from his party member, after all.
'Guess I should end this as quickly as possible…'
With that thought, Naruto immediately put the swordswoman on defense. With each step he took, he forced her to retreat with two to avoid his sweeping fists.
To those spectating, it almost looked like they were watching an aggressive dance.
But the show was short lived as Claire's back suddenly hit the wall. She cursed as she stumbled, but her reaction was staggered which allowed her opponent the opportunity to pounce.
Naruto disarmed her and pinned both of the woman's arms to the wall in the blink of an eye.
"I-it's my loss…"
Claire admitted regrettably, her head hanging low shamefully. To be defeated so soundly, and in front of the princess no less…
"You have impressive speed, Claire-san. But you need to be more aware of your surroundings."
Naruto complimented while sprinkling in an area of improvement. Releasing his hold, he knelt on one knee and took the woman's hand in his own.
'Oh no…'
Darkness immediately snapped out of her shocked state, her face growing pale. She forgot to tell that man NOT to do that!
But it was far too late as Naruto placed a kiss on the back of Claire's hand, causing the woman's face to beam red.
"Now, if you would be so kind as to allow my loyal friends forgiveness in this matter. They meant no harm, Claire-san. But should you need more convincing-"
"N-no! This shall suffice! I-I may have acted rather hastily myself."
Claire snatched her hand back and made her way back to the princess's side.
Not quite the reaction Naruto was hoping for, but he would take it. Also, Darkness looked like she was about to burst into tears for some reason.
Was she that touched by his actions?
'I really need to thank Luna-chan for teaching me the ways of etiquette!'
Naruto thought as he made his way back to the table as well.
'Well, all's well that ends well…'
Kazuma thought with a sigh when he noticed his party's local jester was missing.
"Here ya gooo, Naruto-shaaan~! A victory drink for youuu~! Ack!"
Aqua, who seemed to have gotten quite hammered off of the wine from the meal, stumbled her way towards the shinobi with two filled glasses in her hands.
Unfortunately for the goddess of wine, she ended up bumping on the corner of the table and face planted on the floor. She did not get back up.
As for the wine she'd been holding… It splashed right into Naruto's face.
"Ah…"
While Kazuma apologized for Aqua's behavior, Darkness rushed over to the shinobi with a napkin.
"A-are you okay, Naruto? Here's a handkerchief…"
"Yeah, thanks…"
Eyes closed to avoid getting alcohol in them, the ninja blindly reached out for the handkerchief. Hopefully his suit wasn't ruined…
"Kya…!?"
"Hm? What's this? It doesn't feel like a handkerchief."
Peeking one eye open, Naruto found that he had grabbed onto Darkness's braid.
So that's why those guys were playing with Darkness's hair… It actually felt kinda nice.
"S-sorry…"
Naruto apologized and grabbed the offered napkin.
"N-no, it's fine… But why is everyone grabbing my hair today? Such things should be done when we're alone…"
Darkness said something incredible while looking away shyly, which unlocked a new use for the shinobi's handkerchief in which he quickly brought to his nose.
'Master… Are you sure this woman is not your mate? Those thoughts are comparable to that of even the corrupt priestess.'
'Kiki, you misunderstand. This is a perfectly natural reaction to the nonsense that this woman spouts sometimes.'
'?'
Kiki tilted her head in confusion as the blondes rejoined the group at the table. Humans were difficult to understand.
–After the meal was finished, the group stood before the princess and her guards as they made their preparations to depart.
"Thank you for visiting, Princess Iris. Next time, I'll tell you lots of adventuring stories at the royal castle."
Darkness said with a fond smile, and the princess nodded shyly from behind Claire.
'The royal castle, huh? Jiraiya-sensei offered to take me there… After I deal with Alderp, maybe I'll take him up on that offer.'
Naruto thought with a nod when he noticed the princess was staring at him.
"Is something the matter, your highness?"
"I'm sorry for suspecting you… Will you tell me more adventuring stories in the future?"
Iris asked in a meek tone, almost failing to meet the shinobi's eyes.
Naruto flashed a fox-like grin.
"Of course! I'll even make you my favorite food from my home country!"
The princess seemed like a good kid, all things considered. Plus, if he wanted to make a name for himself in the kingdom, he needed to have a good relationship with the royal family.
Naruto wondered if he would ever meet the king.
"I-I'm sorry for causing you trouble, Naruto-san…"
Yunyun suddenly tugged on the ninja's sleeve. She looked miserable. Was she still mulling over the fight?
"Why are you apologizing, Yunyun? I couldn't be happier to have a party member that would even stand up to royalty to defend me."
Naruto responded and pat the Crimson Demon on the head, promoting a smile to grow on the girl's features.
There, that was better.
"Then, we bid you all farewell."
The mage guard spoke up for the first time and started chanting what they assumed to be Teleportation magic.
"Farewell, princess Iris! I'll tell you lots of stories in the future too, y'know!"
Kazuma offered, causing the young girl to beam.
"Perhaps we can have another sparring session, Naruto-dono? I feel as though I may learn a lot from you."
Claire asked with a smile of her own.
"I would be honored, Claire-san."
Naruto replied with a slight bow, and the woman looked away for some reason. Odd.
Then, as the mage guard completed her chant, Naruto, Kazuma, and the royal group disappeared in a flash of light.
. . .
"Eh?"
Darkness blinked.
Had her eyes deceived her? Or did she just witness the princess pulling Naruto and Kazuma into the Teleport spell at the last second?
