Hey babes! Back with a new one for ya for this little universe! The prompt I used here was: Episode Fix-It. Been a little longer than I would have liked, but it took me a hot minute to actually get this one finished. And I'm on vacation right now for my nephew's birthday and figured I had a little downtime to post this one.
Iyou notice that the order of certain events in this fic seem a bit different to canon, that is one hundred percent on purpose. You'll realize why as you read (hopefully) that I did it this way for a reason.
Enjoy!
Despite how long she's had her Bad Wolf abilities for, Rose is still not entirely sure how they work. Or if she's reached a limit on abilities. Much like with the dying and coming back, and the accelerated healing, she runs on the assumption that her abilities are mostly out of her control. At least until she figures out if there is, in fact, a way to turn them on and off when she wants to.
Most of the time, she just runs on gut feelings, or a little nagging voice in the back of her mind. She still can't interpret timelines the way her husband can, and even if she tries to look at them for too long, headaches come out in full force and put her out for a significant amount of time.
So she simply lets the feelings come when they're meant to, and follows whatever instinct she has with them.
Which is why, when there's a small nagging feeling in the back of her mind, she convinces her husband to pilot the TARDIS into the middle of an apartment. Clara's apartment, to be specific. She doesn't know why they need to be there, of course, just that there's something in her gut telling her it's time to visit the young woman who frequently travels with them when she isn't too busy with her regular life.
"All I'm saying is that it'd be nice to have a plan first," her husband states, not for the first time since she told him of her feeling, as they land with a thud.
Rose sighs. "And I told you that getting to Clara is the first part of that plan. After that, I'm not entirely sure. We'll see if she's busy, and if she's not, we can go somewhere. You can even pick."
"Of course I'm going to pick. It's my time ship."
Rose smiles. "Whatever you say, love." She rises enough to kiss his cheek and then turns around to step through the TARDIS doors and into Clara's front room. Her brows furrow slightly at the near-panic the young woman seems to be in, pacing back and forth and muttering to herself. PostIt notes litter almost every surface in the room.
"Um, Clara?"
Clara whips around to face her. "Rose? I didn't hear you land."
"Clearly. You doing alright?" she asks, stepping all the way out and walking closer.
Clara shakes her head. "Not really. I'm just…I'm gonna tell Danny the truth, about everything. I can't keep lying to him."
Hesitating, Rose reaches out and rests her hands on Clara's shoulders. "Sweetheart, I need you to take a deep breath. Can you do that for me?"
Clara's chest heaves slowly as she breathes.
Rose nods slowly along with her. "Good. That better?" She waits for a quiet nod. "Better to talk to Danny when you're a bit calmer, yeah?"
"Suppose so. I was about to call him when you showed up."
"Oh. Sorry for interrupting."
Clara shakes her head. "It's alright. I think I was about to have a full blown panic attack, so really, I should be thanking you."
"No problem." She takes a deep breath. "Well, we came by to see if you wanted a trip, but you're busy with Danny so we'll come by another time."
Clara's eyes go wide. "No! Stay. I just…if he's alright with it, I was thinking that maybe Danny could come along for a trip."
The doors to the TARDIS creak open. "Absolutely not."
Rose sighs, glancing back at her husband. "Doctor…"
"No. That's my final answer."
Turning back to Clara, Rose offers the woman an apologetic smile. "I'll talk to him. You go call Danny, we'll be here when you're done, if you want."
"Please."
Rose nods silently and then gently nudges Clara back over to where she was before. Then she spins on her heel to face her husband. "I know you aren't Danny's biggest fan, but it would mean a lot to Clara if you offered him a trip. It doesn't have to be anything crazy, especially for his first one, just something simple. Besides, he might not even agree, but at least you'll be offering."
"I don't see why I always get roped into taking people's family and friends on trips all the time. It never ends well. And it's gonna make this whole place domestic."
Rose snorts, resting her hands on his chest. "I believe that whole anti-domestic thing went out the window very quickly a long time ago." She leans up to kiss him quickly, lingering for just a moment when his hands land on her waist. She smiles and pulls back just slightly. "You're totally domesticated now."
He sighs, though there's a small smile on his lips. "Just don't go spreading it around. I have a very serious reputation to maintain."
Rose laughs quietly. "Of course you do, love." She casually adjusts the lapels of his jacket. "And I would never intentionally—"
A faint clatter cuts her off. Something hitting the floor, most likely.
Spinning around, Rose's brows furrow when she spots Clara standing frozen, staring ahead of her, her cellphone lying at her feet. A sinking feeling settles in her gut. This is why they're here.
She steps forward slowly. "Clara? What's going on? What's happened? Clara."
The young woman finally turns, her eyes brimmed with tears. "It's Danny. He's…he's been struck by a car."
Rose sucks in a breath and immediately engulfs the young brunette in her arms, cradling the back of her head and rocking gently.
I don't know what to say to her, she sends to her husband through their bond.
Just keep holding her. I hear that helps sometimes more than words.
So Rose continues to hold the woman, momentarily catching her husband puttering around the kitchen, though she's not entirely sure what for.
After several long moments where Clara cries, the woman in question pulls away, though stays somewhat close.
Rose gently cradles Clara's face in her hands and wipes the tears from her cheeks. "What do you need?"
Clara swallows. "Um…I need…the hospital. The person…they said he was in and out of consciousness."
Rose nods. "Okay. Do you want us to take you, or grab a cab?"
"I think a cab."
"Alright. Come on, then. Doctor," she calls out to her husband. "You coming with us?"
The Doctor turns. "Oh. Um, I don't know if I'm the right–"
"Please, Doctor?" Clara asks.
He sighs and nods. "Alright. Let's get going, then."
It isn't long before they're at the hospital waiting for any word about Danny's condition.
Rose was never the biggest fan of hospitals growing up, even less so when she became possessed by "the last human" whilst visiting one on an alien planet. She actively avoided them while she was in Pete's World once she discovered her Bad Wolf abilities, and her husband absolutely refused to die in one, and she's had zero need for them in the last few centuries. She only ever stepped inside of a hospital if it was absolutely necessary, like when her little brother was born.
Or now, when she's comforting a friend who's grieving the uncertainty of the man she loves.
Now matter how much Rose wants to do something, she can't. She has no medical degree to her name and despite trying, she can't summon Bad Wolf to try and help in some way.
So she simply has to sit and wait and pray that Danny will be alright. For Clara's sake.
Her husband isn't faring much better than she is, his inability to sit still for long periods of time taking him elsewhere in the hospital. Really, she should be worried about whatever it is he's doing. But her main concern is Clara.
"Miss Oswald?"
Rose looks up at the same time Clara does, eyes fixing on the man in scrubs standing before them. She casts a quick glance at Clara, finding the hope shining in the young brunette's eyes.
"Is he alright?" Clara asks, voice thick. "Is he awake?"
The man nods. "He's out of surgery and stable, but hasn't yet regained consciousness. He's fallen into a coma, and we have no idea when he might wake up again."
"Can I go see him?"
"Of course. One at a time, though."
Rose gently nudges Clara when the girl looks at her. "Go on, go see him. I'll be here if you need me."
Clara nods and then silently walks off with the doctor.
Letting out a heavy breath, Rose settles back in her seat and closes her eyes, intent on simply resting since she doesn't sleep like she used to. Her brain is racing and she just needs it to calm down.
"You're not sleeping, are you?"
The edges of her lips quirk up at her husband's voice. "'Course not." She opens her eyes to look at him. "You done with whatever you were doing?"
He shrugs. "I don't like hospitals."
Rose snorts. "Neither do I. But I'm still sat here waiting for Clara."
"Where is she?" he asks, looking around.
"With Danny. He's out of surgery but not awake." She sighs. "I'm worried how she's gonna handle all of this when Danny does wake up."
The Doctor frowns. "We can't stay. Who knows how long his recovery is going to be, or when he'll even be released back home."
Rose sighs, running a hand through her hair. "We can't just leave."
"We won't. Not right away. It's like you said, she'll need us."
Rose smiles up at her husband. "I love you."
The Doctor smiles back and leans down to kiss her quickly. "I love you too. Now can we please get out of here? I hate hospitals."
.
.
.
They manage to stay for about a week to support Clara while Danny's still in the hospital before the Doctor gets restless and needs to go on some kind of trip. Rose can't exactly blame him for it, after centuries of always traveling and moving, it's not necessarily easy to stay in one place for too long. But sometimes they can manage if it's for someone they truly care about.
It's only when they're getting ready to head out that Rose has one of those feelings deep down in her gut. Not a full-on Bad Wolf feeling, but some little inkling. One of those feelings that says this is one of those big moments that's about to change things for all of them.
So she turns to Clara and rests a gentle hand on her shoulder. "Clara…do you want to come with us? You've hardly left Danny's side, and I get it, believe me I do. But taking a little break couldn't hurt."
Clara hesitates. "Oh, um, I suppose you're right. I just…I don't know if I can leave him."
"You don't have to come with us if you don't want to," Rose assures her. "But it might be good for you. We don't have to leave just yet, so take a few minutes to think about it. We'll be right outside." Rose gives Clara's shoulder a small squeeze and then steps out of the hospital room, grabbing her husband's hand on her way to pull him along with her.
They linger just outside the door, closing it most of the way behind them, and then it's just a waiting game. Rose has no idea if Clara will join them on a trip, but she knows she would prefer if the young woman did. She can't help but want to keep an eye on Clara, but there's only so much they can do while the brunette is keeping a vigil by her boyfriend's bedside.
"I thought you said we were leaving."
"We are," Rose assures her husband. "As soon as Clara makes a decision if she's going to come with us or not. Just give her a couple minutes, yeah?"
The hospital door creaks open a second later, pulling their attention. Clara's head peeks through. "Um, does that offer still stand?"
Rose smiles, grabbing Clara's hand and squeezing gently. "'Course it does."
The Doctor claps his hands once behind them. "Great, we're all going. Come on. No time to waste. There's adventure waiting."
Rose rolls her eyes at her husband's antics but follows after him anyway, draping an arm over Clara's shoulders as they fall into step together. She's excited to have the young woman along for another trip, even if that feeling deep in her gut tells her this isn't just going to be 'another trip'.
Their trip ends up being on the Orient Express (though not the original), a place she knows her husband has been meaning to come to for a very long time. She even dresses up a little for the occasion, knowing it'll mean a lot to her husband if they all go all out.
And by the way he looks at her as soon as she steps out of the wardrobe room is any indication, he really appreciates the effort.
She smiles at him, running a hand down the length of her gown. "Like what you see?"
"When don't I?" He wraps an arm around her waist to pull her close and presses a gentle kiss to her lips. "Shall we?" He glances up behind her. "Clara, are you coming?"
"Be right there! Struggling with my zipper. You two go on ahead."
The Doctor looks back at her. "You heard her. Let's go."
They'd landed in the baggage car of the train, which Rose isn't all too surprised by, they've certainly landed in weirder places while traveling, but thankfully the next car is much more the style they're going for on this trip. An entertainment car, of sorts, with a full bar along one side, several chairs lining the walls, and a small stage at the far end with a wonderfully talented singer performing for the modest crowd.
"Oh this is gorgeous," Rose remarks as they make their way through the car. "The perfect trip."
The Doctor closes in behind her, wrapping both of his arms around her torso. "Any trip with you is the perfect trip."
Rose beams up at him. "Look at you getting all sentimental. Didn't know you had it in you," she jokes.
"Excuse you, but I can be quite sentimental when the moment calls for it. And this one just so happens to call for it."
Rose's smile softens, reaching one hand up to cradle his cheek, her thumb gently rubbing his skin. "I know. And I love you for it."
"Oh wow, this is incredible."
Rose smiles at Clara making her way over, the awe on her face never getting old. "It's pretty incredible, yeah?"
"This feeling never gets old."
"It really doesn't. Tell us about it?" Rose asks her husband, leaning back a bit in his hold.
The Doctor hugs her a little closer. "Well, in case you hadn't noticed, it's a completely faithful recreation of the original Orient Express. Except slightly bigger. And in space. Oh, and the rails are actually hyperspace ribbons. But in every other respect, identical. Painstaking attention to detail. It's brilliant."
"Ladies and gentlemen," an automated voice rings through the car, "if you would be good enough to look from the windows on the right of the train, you'll be able to see the soaring majesty of the Magellan black hole."
They follow the voice's advice, the three of them gathering by the windows with several of the other passengers. The sight nearly takes her breath away.
"Oh, I remember when this was all planets as far as the eye could see," the Doctor says. "All gone now. Gobbled up by that beast. There was this planet, Obsidian. The planet of perpetual darkness. There was also a planet that was made completely of shrubs. Oh, and Thedion Four. Constant acid rain. Had a lovely picnic there once, wearing a gas mask."
Rose chuckles. "Oh, that takes me back. I could happily go the rest of my life never seeing another one."
"What do you have against gas masks?" Clara asks with a quiet laugh. "Or acid rain? Though, I suppose I have something against acid rain too without ever having encountered it."
"No, it's the gas masks," Rose clarifies. "Remind me to tell you about the Blitz sometime." She reaches out for a glass of champagne from a nearby waiter. "That's one of our crazier adventures with probably the best outcome. I don't think we've had any others like it."
Clara frowns. "Oh, well now you've jinxed us, haven't you?"
The Doctor shakes his head. "Nonsense. Jinxes are absolutely ridiculous. There's no such thing as jinxes."
Rose absolutely jinxed them, no matter what her husband claims.
They wind up being involved in trying to stop a mummy that isn't actually a mummy and then everyone nearly dies to boot. It's crazy and hectic, and Rose is beyond thrilled when they finally make it back to land. There's a small part of her on the inside that bristles at the fact they end up on a beach. But she's long past the feelings associated with those moments in her life, so she pushes it to the back of her mind. There's no use in dwelling on something that happened so long ago for her. It won't do anyone any favors.
Thankfully, they're only on the beach long enough for Clara to wake up from lack-of-oxygen induced slumber. She happily occupies herself with listening to her husband go on about whatever's on his mind, something that she knows he appreciates because not everyone has the time and patience to listen to him ramble on. But she loves it.
Even when he's not rambling to her, she loves listening to him speak. Though, she does feel a bit bad for Perkins, one of the men from the train, who really has no idea what's happening as he examines the inner workings of the TARDIS. He doesn't accept the Doctor's offer to stay on board, which she can't say she blames him for. This life they live isn't for everyone.
"Doctor? Rose?"
Rose turns at the voice, smiling up at the young brunette standing on the upper balcony, her cell phone clutched in one hand. "Clara, hey. You feeling any better?"
"Yeah, thanks. It's just, um, I just got a call from the hospital. Danny's out of his coma."
Rose can't stop her smile from brightening. "Really? Oh, that's wonderful."
"Yeah. 'Cept, he's probably gonna need a lot of care, and he doesn't have any family in the area." She takes a deep breath. "So, I want to thank you both for everything, and I'm never going to forget a single moment of any of this, it's been some of the best times of my life."
That feeling from before settles into Rose's gut. "But you're leaving. It's okay." She offers a small smile as she moves closer. "Everyone who travels with the Doctor leaves eventually. Better to do it on your own terms."
"This isn't goodbye forever though, is it?" Clara asks, a bit of hopefulness lacing her voice. "You're gonna come visit every once in a while?"
"I can't promise anything. The Doctor…he's not really good with revisiting."
"Maybe a phone call, then."
Rose smiles. "I'll do my best. You gonna be alright?"
Clara nods, taking a deep breath. "We'll see. It's not gonna be easy, but I love him, I want to be there for him."
Rose reaches out to gently squeeze Clara's arm. "Just don't let it be at the detriment of your own health, yeah? Take breaks when you need them, be honest with each other, and ask for help when you need it. And we're only a phone call away if you ever need anything at all, okay?"
"Yeah. Thank you, again, for everything. You two showed me so many wonderful things out there, but I'm needed at home now."
Rose smiles gently. "Then let's get you back there, yeah?"
The trip is bumpy, as it usually is, and then they're landing back in one of the alleyways by the hospital. The goodbye is certainly stretched the farthest it can go before they have to simply snip the invisible thread and let Clara be on her way. But it doesn't stop Rose from watching from the doorway as the young woman heads toward her future. She knows it isn't going to be an easy road for Clara, so she does hope the brunette reaches out every now and then, even just to talk.
Stepping back inside the time ship, Rose pushes the doors closed with a soft click. She takes a deep breath and then leans back against the doors, eyes drifting up to where her husband lingers by the console. She watches him carefully for a moment, the way he fiddles with the different levers and controls.
"I fancy some chips," she eventually speaks up, hoping to distract her husband from his clearly dampened mood now that Clara's left for good. "And maybe a movie."
He glances up at her, the tiniest of smiles on his face. "I know what you're doing, Rose Tyler."
She blinks, feigning innocence. "I'm not doing anything."
He points an accusatory finger at her, though there's no malice behind it. "Yes, you are."
She just smiles at him. "So…chips?"
He sighs, nodding. "Yes, we can get chips and watch a movie. But please, no ridiculously cheesy rom-coms this time. I can't stand them."
Rose laughs quietly as she approaches him. "Promise." She wraps both of her arms around one of his, hugging him close and pressing a kiss to his shoulder. "I love you," she murmurs against the fabric of his jacket.
Lips press firmly to the top of her head, lingering. "I love you too."
So? What did you think? Let me know in a review down below. I'd love to hear your thoughts.
Until next time,
