Ch 6
"That can't be." Tanya whispered in disbelief.
She wasn't the only one, everyone was completely speechless. Could you blame them? The most taboo of their world is walking holding hands with Aro's prized twins. The same twins that killed her mother and brother for this exact reason.
This must be a joke. A sick joke! She saw that her sisters were in the same state of mind as her. However, that wasn't what truly concerned her. It was the fact that Rosalie doesn't even look a bit surprised, in fact it was concern...for the child.
"You knew." She said accusingly to Rosalie and tried her best to not cause a scene.
"Yes." Rosalie responded, not even bothering to deny her.
"How long?"
"About a week. We found him in the woods after Victoria's attack."
"And you kept it?" Tanya almost stepped back at the sharp glare Rosalie gave her.
"HIS name is David and he's nothing like us."
"Of course not! He's a danger to us all and you'd risk your own family for execu-"
"That's not what I meant," Rosalie cut her off and continued before Tanya could speak, "And it's for that very reason why he's no danger. In fact, he may be our only salvation. Just watch."
Tanya wanted to say more but the odd way that Rosalie spoke unnerved her. She's never seen the stoic vampire act like this. This unwavering faith she is putting on a child that shouldn't exist in the first place. She knows how bad Rosalie wanted to be a mother, has her obsession blinded her? Well, she will soon see.
The entire room was dead silent as David walked in with Jane and Alec. All eyes were on him, and it scared him, a lot. The look that everyone is giving him makes it seem like he's some kind of monster. Or something dangerous. There was fear in their eyes, but also disgust.
He gripped Jane's hand tighter, making the older vampire flinch a little. For such a small body she forgot the little one has much strength.
"Don't look at them," Jane whispered getting David's attention to her. "Your safe. No one will dare touch you."
Though her words did make him feel less scared, he wishes he was with Rose. He always feels safe around her. Her and Emmet. He looked around remembering that Rose said she would be here if he needed her, but he couldn't see her.
There are too many people, or vampires. David is still adjusting to the fact that vampires are real and that he is in fact one too. They reached the front of the room where Aro was waiting for them.
"Come, my little prince." Aro called out softly with joyful glee. Alec and Jane relinquished David and stood on the side as was their place. Remembering Jane's instructions on what to do when Aro called for him, he walked up to the vampire lord and allowed himself to be picked up. Several gasps swept around the room at the display.
"My dear ones, I thank for gathering here today, for what I am to present is something never seen in our world. Something truly magnificent. This little one before you is an immortal that doesn't feed."
His words, though soft sent a shockwave through the crowd. It was no secret that Aro has been somewhat obsessed about immortal children, Alec and Jane are a testament to that, though barley. Also, he has been trying to find ways to control not only their hunger but their supposed 'destructive impulses' which is what makes them taboo in the first place.
All of which turned out to be failures. This is something that they all practically know about or at least heard about in hushed doors. No one is stupid enough to openly talk about it where his 'enforcers' are in ear shot. The last unfortunate bastard that had the balls to do so, well… let's just say their end wasn't pretty, nor quick.
So, the fact that not only is Aro holding an immortal child in his arms but openly claiming about said child in front of EVERYONE, it can only mean one thing…it's true. A vampire that doesn't drink blood actually exist and for it to manifest as an immortal child of all things.
However, the main question on everyone's mind is how. How did this child come to be and how did Aro manage to do it? But no one spoke. Fear of earning Aro's displeasure held their tongue, except for one brave soul.
"My lord?" A vampire from the crowd spoke.
"Yes? You may speak." Aro's reply seemed inviting, but everyone knew it was anything but, especially the way Alec and Jane, also known as his guard dogs, tensed. The message was clear; speak but do so cautiously.
"There has never been a vampire that doesn't feed. Even those who are astray still feed, despite their choice in palette. If the child doesn't feed, how can he live?" He chose his words very carefully so as to not sound off as questioning Aro's judgement. Aro's smile didn't leave his face, in fact it became much larger.
"Ah, and that's the most marvelous thing. His diet consists of human vegetation!" If the revelation of a vampire not drinking was bad enough, this threw their entire conception upside down.
"He consumes?" The vampire stepped back in astonished. What else could he say? A vampire not drinking, but consuming human food? How is that possible?
"You doubt my words?" Aro frowned and a sudden chill came over the room. Everyone in the room was holding their breath on the exchange.
"No Lord Aro," The vampire said quickly getting down on one knee. "I would never!" Seeing the other vampire prostrating himself, he motioned for Alec and Jane to stand down, for now.
"It seems a demonstration is needed." Aro nodded to both Alec and Jane who went off. When they came back Alec was holding a cup of fresh blood that had everyone's senses tingled. However, Jane had a bowl of what looked like to be some red fruit. Strawberries?
"And now you will see it with your own eyes." With that he signaled Alec and Jane to come forward. Everyone watched stunned as Alec went up to David and offered the child the cup.
David looked at it in disgust and shook his head pushing the cup away. Then when Jane offered the child the bowl a smile appeared on his face as he happily ate two of the fruit.
"As you see this child is extraordinary, in more ways than one. His name is David and as of this moment he is and shall be the only of his kind." With that Aro sat on his throne placing David on his lap. He signaled for his servants to come out holding trays of champaign glasses half filled with fresh blood. There were even glasses that had jaguar blood as a vegan option. When he was handed his glass, he spoke again.
"This is a celebration my friends. A celebration of the new. Of possibilities and for the future of our kind. To little David, the last immortal child." Aro spoke, raising his glass.
"To David." Everyone replied in unison, including the Cullens. They knew exactly why Aro didn't mention them. It's one of his power plays. It doesn't matter anyways; their agreement was set so he can flaunt David all he wants today.
"I see now." Tanya said more to herself but was still loud enough for Rosalie to hear. Both them and their families were in the back of the room, so no one was really paying them any attention.
"It was the only way to keep him safe. To keep us all safe."
"So, what now?"
"We've come to an agreement. David is to stay with us seeing as he doesn't have the normal diet of a vampire, and it would be best to have him in a more stable and controlled environment.
"I sense a 'but' in there."
"Aro insisted that David would come here every few years to learn more about our world. It wasn't like we could refuse."
"I'm still trying to wrap my head around all this."
"Trust me, me too."
"How did this happen?" Tanya asked as her sisters, Kate and Irina, also listened in as Rosalie told them of how they met David.
The party proceeded with the attended members conversing with one another while David sat with Aro. An occasional vampire came up to greet him, after they had been given permission to do so. David figured they must have been important since they were the only ones that were allowed to approach him.
Just sitting here and watching the others was starting to get boring and David can feel himself getting tired, but he didn't want to fall asleep on Aro. He wants Rose. He looked around to find her knowing that her and the other Cullens must be here to. She promised him she would.
It took a few minutes, and he had to squint his eyes a bit to scan the room, but he eventually found the Cullens all the way in the back. He saw Rose speaking to four pretty blond vampires. He wondered why they were all the way back there, but then a thought came.
Aro didn't mention them at all when he introduced him to the others. It was the Cullens that found him, so why didn't Aro say that? Maybe no one is supposed to find out. If so, then would he be allowed to go to Rose?
"Are you having fun?" The question from Aro brought David out of his own thoughts.
"Yes," David lied, thinking it wouldn't be a good idea to say the truth. "But I've never been around a lot of grownups like this."
"They're all here just for you." There was something about that that made David embarrassed. He still didn't really understand why he is such a big deal.
"I'm not that special." David said quietly, speaking his inner thoughts.
"Ah, but you are. To everyone here, you're the most special being." Before David could say anything else a yawn escaped his lips. Aro smiled broadly at him already knowing the little one can in fact get tired and sleep.
However, some of the others that saw David were gob smacked. A vampire that sleeps?! Is the child truly a vampire? Aro stood up gathering the attention of the rest of the crowd though he paid them no attention and walked to Jane.
"It appears the little prince requires some rest. Escort him back to his chambers Jane." Aro ordered as he handed David to her.
"Yes, sir." She replied as she turned around and nodded to Alec letting him know to stay. David quickly wrapped his arms around Jane and laid his head on her shoulder. She is much more comfortable than Aro, but Rose is still better.
Everyone moved out of the way as Jane walked down the aisle holding David. David looked up to see if he could spot Rose and the others when they reached the end, but they weren't there. He wondered if they left and went to his room.
When they exited the ballroom David saw Rosalie and Emmett waiting for them.
"Thank you, Jane, but we can take it from here." Rosalie spoke and while she tried to sound friendly there was still a stain vice to it making Jane smirk.
"I believe Lord Aro instructed me to escort him back to his chambers, not you." Jane knew how overprotective Rosalie was and there's nothing that she loves more than poking at someone's buttons and see them lose their composure. Such fun.
Emmit put a hand on Rosalie's shoulder seeing that his mate was about to flip her shit and right now is not the time to do it.
"True, but I'm sure he would rather have you by his side. We can take care of David. It's why we're here anyways." Emmett said with a smirk of his own. Though he wasn't exactly wrong the way he said it irked Jane for some reason.
Normally she wouldn't think twice about sending this idiot to the ground, but with David here it wouldn't do well to hurt his caretakers. At least while the child is in eye shot that is. There'll be other opportunities. She has time and can be patient…for a bit.
"So it seems." Was all she said. She set David on the floor and was about to leave until all of them saw three vampires escorting a large group. David noticed that the group of people were humans. For some reason he's able to smell the difference between vampires and humans.
"Ah, the entertainment has arrived. Well then, I'll leave him to you." Jane grinned leaving them. Entertainment? David wondered what she meant by them.
"Why are there normal people here?" David asked Rosalie and Emmett but neither answered him. Rosaline simply picked him up and used her free hand to put his head on her shoulder and covered his ear. They began walking away at a fast pace.
"Rose?" He asked, confused.
"It's ok sweetheart, close your eyes." David was about to ask what is happening until he heard the screams.
"Rose!" He exclaimed, frightened, clinching his small hands on her shirt.
"Shhhhh. Close your eyes sweetheart. Close your eyes." He did as instructed but even with him burying his head as far as he could in Rosalie, he couldn't mute the screams that echoed through the halls.
It was in that moment that David truly understood that Jane, Alec, Aro and all the others that he saw in that room were indeed…
Vampires.
