Chapter 36; Homesick
"Dorm?" Silver echoed, his ears perking up, "Oh, yeah sure," The nervous hedgie-boy reached over and gently grabbed Blaze's hand. The warmth of her hand was like a small heater.
Silver gently guided her through the crowd and over to the elevator. The mix of emotions was still very present. As much as Silver loved that Blaze was here, he was still struggling with how to properly feel. Every emotion pushed to be the one at the front, every thought pushed one another around to prove how important they were. How was Blaze here? Better yet, why? Was she hurt? Was Sonic here? What was going on? The young hero felt like his world was being turned inverted with confusion. But he was able to keep his calm, after all, he couldn't panic that bad with Blaze beside him.
Silver carefully opened his dorm room door, "My dorm…!" The psychic awkwardly showed off his dorm. Blaze nodded and stepped inside while Silver followed. The door closed behind them with a cyan nudge. Silver's ears dipped as he shuffled around the room, kicking stray shirts away with an embarrassed expression, "I wasn't expecting to have people in my dorm so it's a little…messy. Sorry," Blaze sat down on Silver's bed.
"I don't mind," She looked around for a moment, "I've seen worse than a slight me-" The princess did a double take and froze, "Is that Tails Doll?" Her tail flicked upon seeing the limp plush sitting on the bed.
Silver turned around, "Oh yeah," He gently picked up the lifeless doll, "We found him in a haunted house nearby…long story, but he isn't possessed anymore!" Silver awkwardly offered the plushie fox to Blaze, who warily refused. Silver put the Tails doll back on the bed and sighed.
"Are you ok?" The human-feline princess asked softly, but bluntly as well. Silver's ears perked as he stared at her. Slowly, the fluffy ivory ears dipped in thought again. Honestly…it depended on what she was asking. Physically? Or mentally?
The hedgie-boy leaned towards her a little, "Uh, yeah I'm fine? Are you ok? Is something wrong..?"
Blaze let out a small huff, her hand being placed to rest on top of Silver's, "Is UA is safe? Do they know? They have not been testing on you, right?" The apprehensive pyronetic asked, her tail twitching back and forth with worry.
"Oh," Silver straightened, brightening up a little, "No, they're pretty great! UA's nice. Most of them don't know about the whole… alien thing. Izuku does, and Bakugou. As well as All Might and Nighteye..but no one else." The hedgie-boy explained, keeping an eye on Blaze's expression. The princess looked a tad relieved but she closed her eyes in thought.
"Ah," The feline mumbled, gently lowering her head as she paused. "You like it here?" Silver nodded slightly as Blaze looked back at him, "Good, I had been perturbed thinking you were being held somewhere without your consent." The tip of Blaze's fluffy tail flicked again, barely displaying how deep her concern had truly been. "Is there some reason you've…hesitated…to tell the rest of your class?" She asked curiously and the ivory-haired teen shifted.
Silver gave an uncomfortable rictus, "Well…uh, mostly just the fact I've been nervous. I don't want them to react badly…" The hedgie-boy watched as Blaze nodded understandingly. "I had amnesia when I first came into UA, so I've been kinda riding off that." The psychic turned away from Blaze for a moment, and the feline's eyes widened at the new news, "I have all my memories now. But…it's weird." Silver looked back at Blaze, "I feel like my reactions are all wrong. Every Time I think about home, or our friends, I feel…sick?" The young trainee quickly waved his hands animatedly, "I don't dislike them or anything! I just feel so sad…and then I puke! I don't get it…"
Blaze sat in silence for a beat, her ears flicking as she studied Silver. The hedgie-boy hunched over, his head in his hands. The feline's honey eyes trailed along the young psychic's frame.
"Homesick." She finally said as she lowered her head in a poised demeanor. Silver lifted his head in confusion, "Your responses aren't broken. Silver, you're homesick." The confused psychic tilted his head. Homesick? He…didn't understand. His expression seemed to display his confusion. The pyrokinetic feline sighed, "There is a reasonable response people get when they are away from their home. Far away. And they long to go home. Sometimes, that sadness and longing makes you physically sick. You're not broken, it's perfectly normal. Silver, you are just homesick."
Silver stared at his childhood best friend. Oh…mother of Iblis. This was a normal response to being far away from home? "Homesick?" Silver finally echoed, "...I'm homesick?" The psychic stared at his hands, his mind reeling. It made no sense. How was this normal? Why did sadness and longing make his body puke and sweat? His mind wanted to go home so his body's response was to vomit? Why? "How do I cure it?"
Blaze's gaze softened as her honey eyes locked with his amber ones, "...I'm not quite sure, I haven't ever experienced homesickness for myself. I'm not sure how to help homesickness," She thought for a beat, her ear flicking, "I'm sure there are multiple ways to deal with it. Do you have anything that works for you?"
Silver stared at Blaze and slowly shook his head, "No, not really. Being here with you helps though." Blaze's ears lifted with mild intrigue. Her arms gently wrapped around Silver's shoulders, pulling him into a sweet embrace. Silver looked up at Blaze but gave no fight. Hesitantly, he returned it.
His head rested on her shoulder. Her temperature was warmer than others by a few degrees, but it was a pleasant sensation to the psychic. Her hand gently brushed through his hair, and Silver calmed. He felt a rare moment of tranquility and peace. Blaze's gentle demeanor was just as rare, but Silver happily melted into her hug. It was one of those hugs where you felt at home, your stress taking a back seat, and relaxation filling your senses. Silver wished he could have enjoyed it forever.
"We'll talk later…you need this right now," Blaze assured quietly, easing Silver further into relaxation.
Her tail softly curled over her leg, tickling against his back. Her gentle fingers combed through his hair and fiddled with his ears. Smokey lavender filled his nose. Silver felt like a little hoglet again. Having Blaze calm him down after Silver had gotten too worked up over a mistake. A hug that felt like the best therapy. The psychic began to purr in the embrace, closing his eyes and enjoying the moment to the full extent. He could feel Blaze's heartbeat, and hear her poised breaths. His lungs attempted to go in sync with hers. His muscles relaxed and his purring continued.
Blissful relaxation softly lulled him into slumber, but the last thing he could remember hearing was Blaze's soft purrs in return.
Vrrt vrrt…Vrrt vrrt…Vrrt vrrt
Silver frowned as the repeating sounds of vibration dragged him out of a peaceful slumber. The sound muffled yet irritating. The psychic pulled his head out of the warmth he had been snuggled into. Rolling over and grabbing his phone off the bedside table. Grumbling as he groggily opened his eyes. The call screen read "Problematic Bones". The still vibrating brick of annoyance made Silver huff and sit up properly. Izuku was calling him? Why not just burst into his room like he normally did?
"Silver, turn that thing off," Blaze mumbled with irritation on the other side of his bed.
The psychic glanced at Blaze, realizing somewhere along the line, they had both fallen asleep. Silver hadn't even changed out of his shoes and cringed a little seeing Blaze had not either. She sat up, giving an irked frown. Her hair hadn't even been pulled out before she fell asleep, leading to a bit of a ratted-up mess. Her jacket was even all twisted up. It was a mildly amusing sight, especially knowing that he also looked pretty languorous. The phone continued to vibrate as Silver stared at the pyrokinetic fixing her jacket. Her irritation was expressed as her ear flicked, she turned around and sharply answered the call for Silver. The psychic fumbled with his phone and Blaze sat back down. Much calmer seeing the endless vrrting stop.
Silver gave a sheepish smile as Izuku came on screen, "What's up?" The hedgie boy asked, trying to tame his hair a little bit.
Blaze peaked over his shoulder, "Oh, the Hero Billboard Chart is being announced, I thought you might be curious about watching," Izuku stated, flipping the camera over so Silver and Blaze could see the TV downstairs for a moment. Which was currently showing some white bunny-type hero. Izuku flipped the camera back around, "You don't have to, I'm sure you and Blaze still have a lot to talk about. Speaking of, the WWPC is chilling in the teacher's dorm, so you guys have some time to continue chatting." Deku happily informed, Todoroki coming up behind the couch and nodding.
"Thank you for informing us Izuku," Blaze nodded politely from behind Silver.
Deku awkwardly shifted, a mildly uncomfortable grin plastered on his face, "Midoriya," He nervously corrected Blaze, "Please call me Midoriya…or Deku? Just uh, the whole first name thing is-"
"Apologies," Blaze quickly interrupted, "I believed Izuku was your last name." She glanced at Silver with mild confusion and Silver just shrugged. (A/N; Blaze knows about the 'first name is reserved for family and close friends' rule, due to being in the WWPC long enough to catch on.)
Izuku smiled and nodded, "Yeah, Midoriya is my last name. Izuku Midoriya. You can call me Deku though if it's easier." Blaze politely declined the offer with a soft shake of her head. (A/N; Silver had only really gotten away with calling Deku by his first name when they met, and ever since, because Deku was too polite to correct someone who was struggling with remembering their name. He kinda assumed Silver would 'remember' that it was kinda rude to use someone's first name in Japan. Silver just never knew to begin with. XD We see that in Chapter 10 -Dreams of an Absolution- and it's pretty much when Izuku realizes Silver's culture was to call someone by their first name. By that point, they were best friends anyway, so it didn't matter-)
"...I think we'll come down to watch it in a minute," Silver finally interjected, "Thanks for letting us know," And with that, Silver hung up.
Both of the teens began to prepare for the day. Silver gave Blaze his hairbrush as he made his bed. Blaze detangled her hair as their conversations drifted through Silver's stories at UA and Blaze's at the WWPC. Silver listened intently as Blaze explained she was fairly new to the world still. The feline had kept a calm face as the brush combed through her lilac human hair. Turns out, Blaze had just gotten to Earth nearly a month ago. Likely while Silver was preparing for the School Festival and practicing. The pyrokinetic explained the Sol Emeralds had given her unease and sent her to Sonic. When it became apparent something was wrong. Blaze calmly explained how the Sonic crew had been looking for Silver, finding it odd how he disappeared without a word. They even asked Eggman, who temporarily halted his evil advances.
Silver was understandably confused as to why Eggman would help at all until Blaze explained why. If something was taking even the time traveler out and it wasn't himself…they were blindly up against something worse. Blaze began to pull her hair back up in a ponytail as she detailed how nearly a week of futile searching led to her going back home in hopes the Sol Emeralds would be a better help. Seeing they worked better in the Sol dimension and all. And after many tries and pleas, she was finally able to find a loophole and get herself to Silver. Not directly, but on Earth and in Japan…so close enough. She had ended up stuck in a tree by the WWPC agency and Kota had found her. Blaze had proven she was strong and helpful, so she had gotten a temporary spot. Mostly like a roomie, but she did some stuff behind-the-scenes work like Ragdoll too. (A/N; I know what you're thinking. 'Psy, you're skipping all the cool dialogue!' 'You're just being lazy.' Yes I am, writing this all out with detailed dialogue easily takes like 6 pages, so I quickly summed it up. It's still good to know, maybe just not important enough to detail it so much.)
It was quite the tale, but it made Silver feel bad. The Restoration was worried. Nor he or Blaze could give any indication that they were ok. One chaos emerald alone wasn't strong enough to teleport even small objects across dimensions. It would take at least a very detailed machine. And Blaze's loophole to get to Silver was to teleport to the specific emerald he had…with all seven of her emeralds. She had to leave most behind so the portal could remain open. (She can take all the Emeralds to Mobuis but since Earth was further away, she was stretching by even taking one emerald with her.) She only had one Sol emerald, which wasn't enough alone either. So…they were both stuck. Honestly, Silver was surprised. Normally Blaze was poised and steps ahead with a thought-out plan. But hearing she had gotten so worried she jumped with no plan… made Silver worry a little.
He kinda hoped the Restoration wasn't thinking with the same worried mindset. (A/N; . . . h m m - )
However, Silver pushed that thought aside. They had gotten so carried away catching up, that he was sure they missed the chart. Silver had talked about how he ended up on Earth, to begin with, and explaining how he had gotten kidnapped by a Nomu to Blaze wasn't too much fun. It was honestly mildly embarrassing and made him feel guilty when Blaze reacted with worry. It had taken up more time than he expected. The psychic still wanted to go down and get some type of breakfast though. So, after nearly an hour and a half later, Silver and Blaze finally managed to get downstairs. Greeted by Izuku who passively mentioned their lateness and Ashido who continuously smirked and raised her eyebrows for who knows why.
"You completely missed the Billboard chart," Izuku chuckled, sitting comfortably on one of the little stray couch cushions, "But I'll sum it up for you," The psychic opened his mouth to explain he was gonna eat something first, when his stomach growled loudly, "..After you get something to eat." Deku snickered in mild amusement.
Blaze took a seat on the couch beside Tsu, her tail wrapping around her leg. Ochako greeted her while Silver nodded and wandered off to the kitchen. 'What would be something Blaze would enjoy?' Silver thought to himself as he wondered about the fridge, she needed to eat too. Blaze hadn't ever been one for sweets like Silver had. She often preferred more mild, savory dishes. Like broths, stews, and fish. Fish wasn't a quick breakfast food though. Though, Miso soup on the other hand seemed to be calm in its savory flavors while also being fairly easy to make. Silver quickly gathered the simple ingredients. He put the water and dashi to a boil, humming as he turned down the heat and stirred in the miso. His telekinesis multitasked with dicing up some tofu and green onions. He tossed in the tofu and green onions, letting it simmer as he grabbed the bowls and soup spoons. (A/N; It is easy.)
The hungry hedgie-boy poured some for Blaze and himself, made sure the stove was off and smiled. There was still some soup left over, but he was sure someone else would eat it if Silver couldn't handle seconds for some reason. He happily carried the two bowls into the Common Room, his ears perking as he saw Blaze talking with the rest of 1-A. It was so good to see them getting along nicely. Silver never understood why, but oftentimes when Blaze was meeting someone new, she was so quiet and wary. So it made the young ivory trainee grin knowing she felt safe enough not to be so stiff. As he approached, he could see a small flame dancing at the tip of her finger. Most of the students looked awed.
Todoroki had fire though too, so he didn't understand why her's was any more exciting, "Flame-based quirks are more common than I originally guessed," Izuku said as he leaned a little closer to her flame, "You're the fourth person I know with one! Fifth maybe?" (A/N; Fifth if we include Deku's mysterious dad with an alleged fire-breathing quirk.)
"What are the drawbacks?" Todoroki asked, watching her flame dance around softly, his left-hand lifting with a similar small flame, "I have fire as well, but only on my left side. And I overheat, so my right side is ice to counter that."
Blaze kept herself calm and professional, used to questions due to her status back at home, "Well that's quite interesting. Fire and Ice?" She mused, then turned back to her own flame, "As odd as I find it with your questions about the drawbacks of my abilities, I suppose I can tell. I don't quite overheat, in fact, I'm immune to temperatures overall."
"Immune?" Tsu asked, clearly intrigued, "Like you can't get hurt from a thermel attack? Ribbit."
Blaze frowned a bit with thought, "No, I can in a way. I just meant I couldn't feel the temperatures. I can go into an oven or a freezer and not react. I just don't feel a difference." Izuku's eyes widened as he made a small 'Oh' sound, "More of a drawback is controlling the flames. Strong emotions often make some part of me burst into flames. Which often leads to unintentional destruction." She snuffed her flame, watching the smoke rise into the air.
"Oh, so that's why you talk so calmly," Midoirya muttered aloud in thought, "Because your flames are always trying to come out. Huh, that's a drawback I wouldn't have guessed!"
"She's good at handling her quirk though," Silver finally interjected, standing behind the couch. All eyes turned to him as he handed Blaze her bowl of miso soup.
"Thank you," The pyrokinetic said as she took her bowl, politely sipping on it.
Silver lifted himself in his power, floating in place as he sipped on his soup. Some news was playing on the TV in the background as Izuku perked up. He began to explain how the Japanese Hero Billboard chart went as Silver and Blaze listened with interest. Ryukyu came in 10th (Silver remembered her from the raid, and man she did deserve her spot), Yoroi Musha came in 9th, Wash came in 8th, Kamui Woods got 7th, Crust got 6th, Miriko came in 5th (who was the white bunny hero he saw briefly earlier on call), Edgeshot got 4th, Best Jenist came in 3rd (who was earlier Bakugo's work-study?), Hawks came in 2nd, and Endeavor came in number one. Silver didn't know most of those heroes, which kinda wasn't the best thing in the world. He should probably know more heroes than he did.
He took a long sip of his miso, thinking about how it had turned out, "Where did Rock Lock place?" He finally asked, fairly curious about the hero he did his work-study with.
"61st," Momo stated as she showed him her phone, which indeed placed Rock Lock at 61.
"Aw," Silver mumbled, sinking down slightly as he continued to float, "I was hoping he got a higher rank…I suppose it makes sense though. He was out of commission for a while because of Toga," The psychic muttered to himself, lifting himself back up softly.
Something from the TV caught his attention though, the earlier calm news report was now shifted to a building, the top falling off. The psychic grew alarmed as he stared at the TV. When did this happen? And so quickly too! Silver had completely missed whatever caused the transition from peace to chaos. "You gotta be kidding me! It's falling!" Silver could barely catch from the background of the TV.
"Whoa, what the heck?" Silver said in concern, "What is going on?"
The conversation fizzled out as everyone turned to the TV, growing stiff and alarmed seeing what was happening on screen. Silver gently put himself down, a bit more anxious and serious. He could see people running on screen, his eyes darting across the screen to try and pick up context as to what was going on. Izuku stiffened and Todoroki took a step closer. Somewhere amongst the chaos, Nomu's began crawling along the sides of buildings. Blaze straightened and Silver's eyes narrowed. He hadn't seen a Nomu in…three months? When was the last time he had seen a Nomu? During Kamino…they were hauling some of them away after the fight and Silver only saw a few glimpses. Though, that didn't mean he didn't know about them. He just hoped the doctor had not succeeded in the murmur he heard while there…
The camera shifted, showing heat waving and warping the reality slightly. Flames flickered high by a semi-destroyed building. Todoroki grew stiff, everyone falling into an awkward silence. The reporter gasped on screen.
"Look at that! Endeavor is still in the sky, shining brightly! I can feel the heat from his attacks!" Silver frowned slightly. Endeavor, Izuku had just said he was the new number one, wasn't he? How ironic Silver would get the chance to see a hero he had not yet in action so soon, "He's a one-man inferno!"
"I'm going to take a wild guess and assume that Endeavor is one of the four pyrokinetics you know, Midoriya?" Blaze asked stiffly, watching Deku barely able to nod.
Something Silver was having trouble making out flung at Endevor, and the hero responded by burning brighter. The reporter hunkered down, the reality waving around the camera with the heat. Whatever the thing was, burnt to a crisp. Yet…it tossed something…and regenerated. Silver tensed, 'Mother of Iblis, please please please don't let it be..' He thought to himself. It shot at Endeavor, the hero falling from the sky. A flicker of flame came from Todoroki, the dust waving away from the scene. Silver's heart dropped. He wished he could have spoken sooner…Endeavor lay on the ground beneath it. A tall, dark Nomu. Crouched over Endeavor in disappointment. This thing..wasn't a normal Nomu. Silver's hand gripped the back of the couch.
"A Nomu, smart enough to think on its own" The familiar holder of his torment whispered to himself, "To talk and fight without a command…I've almost cracked it," The shine of the glasses went along with the creaking of the chair as it swiveled around toward him, "You're my key to making…"
Silver stared at the Nomu on screen, listening to his raspy voice. The psychic's stomach churned as he witnessed what he had been hoping he was wrong about. The memory was loud in his mind as he stared at the being on screen. "A High End."
SilverPsychic; Ooooo, what do you guys think about that last part? Silver knew about High Ends…? *Very dramatic;* HMMMMMM I wonder what THAT means-
Silver; …It means hopefully you'll show them what All for One actually did to me.
Blaze; What did he do to you?
Silver; . . . . . . . IS SHADOW STILL LOCKED IN THE CELLER?!
SilverPsychic; Hehehehe, welp! Here we go! NEXT TIME! The New Number One! Endeavor shows off his sparking determination against Hood in a furious battle, aiming to put his own pain to rest as well. But will he live? Probably. Silver grows ever more stressed knowing something we don't. The clock is ticking, but for what? Will Blaze become a new UA student? Aw, and Eri is drawing Lemillon. Thanks for reading! Have a wonderful day/night!
