After Jesse returned from the alternate dimension where he'd been trapped for what felt like ages, Jaden couldn't help but notice that something about his friend was... off. Jesse's warm, genuine personality had dimmed, and he now seemed to be keeping Jaden at arm's length. No matter how many times Jaden reached out, Jesse always seemed to dodge him with some half-baked excuse or silent look. It felt as if they were separated by more than just the physical boundaries of the real world.

Slifer Cafeteria

Jaden plopped his tray onto the cafeteria table, his usual carefree smile faltering when he noticed Jesse standing by the doorway, looking hesitant. With his head lowered and one hand fidgeting with his uniform jacket, Jesse avoided Jaden's gaze.

"Yo, Jesse!" Jaden called out, waving his hand to get Jesse's attention. "I saved you a seat! You've gotta try today's special; it's actually edible!"

Jesse blinked, his expression conflicted. He forced a smile but kept his distance, lingering by the entrance. "Thanks, Jaden, but… I actually just remembered I have to… uh… meet up with Hassleberry. Yeah, he wanted to, uh, go over some duel strategies." He backed up a step, his eyes darting to the exit.

Jaden's smile faded completely. "Aw, c'mon, dude, I barely see you around anymore! I thought we could chill, just like old times."

Jesse's forced smile wavered, and for a second, a flicker of unease crossed his face before he turned away. "Sorry, Jaden… maybe another time."

And just like that, Jesse disappeared from the cafeteria, leaving Jaden staring at the empty seat beside him, the laughter and chatter of the Slifer students around him dulling to a distant hum.

Later, Outside the Dorms

Determined to get to the bottom of things, Jaden waited outside the Slifer dorms, hoping to catch Jesse after classes. As soon as he spotted Jesse walking toward the dorms, Jaden stepped forward.

"Jesse! There you are," Jaden said, blocking his path. "You've been avoiding me, haven't you?"

Jesse looked away, his face tense. "Jaden, don't make this hard, okay? I just… I need some space."

"Space?" Jaden's brows furrowed, confusion and frustration spilling over. "Jesse, we used to do everything together. I'm not gonna pretend that whatever happened in that other dimension didn't mess you up, but we're best friends, man. You can talk to me about anything. You know that, right?"

Jesse's lips pressed into a tight line, and he clenched his fists, a dark look in his eyes. "Things aren't that simple, Jaden. You don't know what it was like over there. What I had to do… and what Yubel did."

Jaden's heart sank. He hadn't heard Jesse mention Yubel since they returned. "But that's over, Jesse. Yubel's part of me now, and I get what she was trying to do, but it doesn't change anything between us. You're back, and that's all that matters."

Jesse shook his head, taking a step back. "You don't understand," he said quietly, his voice a little unsteady. "Jaden, I… I'm different now. I don't know if I can be the same guy I was before. Maybe it's better if we're not around each other so much."

Jaden's face fell, his voice pleading. "But… why, Jesse? Why are you pushing me away?"

Jesse turned his face away, as if the weight of Jaden's gaze was too much to bear. "Because every time I'm around you, Jaden, I… I remember things I don't want to remember. And I don't think I can control it."

Jaden reached out, putting a hand on Jesse's shoulder, but Jesse flinched, recoiling as if Jaden's touch burned him. A flash of sadness and guilt crossed Jaden's face.

"Jesse… I'm sorry for whatever happened over there, but you don't have to go through this alone," Jaden said softly, his voice breaking. "Whatever you're feeling, let me help."

Jesse took a deep breath, his expression hardening as he looked Jaden in the eyes, his voice low and resolute. "Look, Jaden, I know you mean well. But I don't need you to save me, okay? I just need to figure things out on my own." With a final, guarded look, he turned and walked away, leaving Jaden standing in the dim light of dusk, his heart feeling heavier than ever.

Next Day - Duel Academy's Courtyard

Jaden paced around the courtyard, deep in thought. He replayed his conversation with Jesse over and over, each word twisting into a tangle of worry. Finally, he saw Jesse heading toward the Obelisk dorms, where he'd been spending more time lately.

This time, Jaden didn't wait. He ran up to Jesse and grabbed his arm, stopping him in his tracks.

"Jesse, enough of this! I'm not letting you avoid me anymore!" Jaden's voice had an edge of desperation.

"Jaden, please, let me go," Jesse said, his voice a mixture of anger and sadness. "I'm serious. This isn't your fight!"

Jaden's grip tightened. "No! You're my best friend, Jesse. Whatever's going on, we'll get through it together, just like we always have. Don't shut me out!"

In a sudden burst of frustration, Jesse wrenched his arm free, a flicker of something dark and unrecognizable in his eyes. "You think it's that simple, Jaden?" His voice cracked with emotion. "I… I was different in that other dimension. I had to do things I'm not proud of. There are parts of me now… that aren't mine!"

Jaden took a step back, stunned by the intensity of Jesse's words. But he held his ground, his expression softening. "Jesse, whatever happened, it doesn't change who you are. And it doesn't change how much I care about you."

Jesse's face twisted with an internal struggle, his fists clenched at his sides. "But what if I hurt you, Jaden? What if this… darkness inside me… takes over?"

Jaden shook his head. "You won't, Jesse. I believe in you. I always have. And no matter what's inside you, we'll face it together. You don't have to be afraid."

For a moment, Jesse looked as though he might break down, his expression softening, but he quickly turned away, trying to hide the turmoil in his eyes. "I… I need time, Jaden. Just… give me time."

Jaden nodded slowly, though his heart ached to help his friend. "Okay. I'll give you space if that's what you need. But just remember, I'm here. Always."

Without another word, Jesse walked away, his form disappearing into the shadows of the courtyard as Jaden watched him go, feeling a mix of relief and sorrow. He knew Jesse was still in there somewhere. And no matter how long it took, Jaden was determined to bring his friend back.

That night, Jaden lay on his bed in the quiet Slifer dorm room, the darkness feeling heavier than usual. Sleep seemed impossible as he replayed his conversation with Jesse in his mind, searching for some clue or insight into how he could help his friend. Jesse had been so distant, so haunted, and no matter how much Jaden tried to reassure him, the pain in Jesse's eyes hadn't softened.

Lost in thought, Jaden's mind drifted to Yubel. Since she'd become a part of him, they shared a bond that was stronger than words—a connection that went beyond dueling or dimensions. Yubel had been with him through his darkest moments, and she knew Jesse's pain too well.

As if summoned by his thoughts, a soft glow appeared beside his bed. In the dim light, Yubel's spectral form materialized, her eyes a mixture of compassion and sadness. She crossed her arms, watching him with a serious expression.

"Still worrying about him, aren't you?" Yubel's voice was gentle but edged with a touch of sorrow.

Jaden sighed, staring up at the ceiling. "Yeah… it's just, Jesse's different now, and I don't know how to help him. He went through so much, Yubel. I feel like it's all my fault…"

Yubel floated closer, gazing down at him with an intense expression. "It's not your fault, Jaden. What happened in that dimension was because of me." Her voice softened, and she turned her gaze away. "I did things… terrible things to Jesse and the Crystal Beasts. Things that he'll never forget."

Jaden sat up, shaking his head. "Maybe he won't forget, but I know Jesse. He's one of the kindest people I've ever met. He'll forgive you eventually. I just need to get through to him somehow."

Yubel's expression tightened. "Forgiveness isn't something that comes easily, especially after what I've done. I manipulated him, hurt him, and used him to reach you. Those are scars that don't heal just because of words."

Jaden reached out a hand, his voice soft yet resolute. "But you did all of that because you thought it would keep me safe. You thought you were doing the right thing, in your own way. Jesse might not see it now, but when he realizes how much you've changed, he'll understand. And he'll forgive you."

Yubel closed her eyes, her voice almost a whisper. "Even if he does, it won't erase the pain I caused him. And you'll have to live with that too, Jaden. You'll be the one caught between us."

Jaden lowered his gaze, his shoulders slumping slightly as he considered her words. It was true that Yubel's past actions had left deep scars on both of them. But he'd come to accept her, even with the pain and mistakes. If he could find a way to forgive her, maybe Jesse could too—eventually.

"I know it won't be easy," Jaden said, his voice steady. "But you're not the same person who did those things, Yubel. You've changed, and so has Jesse. I just need to remind him of who he was before… before all of this happened."

Yubel looked at him, a faint, bittersweet smile gracing her lips. "That's why I chose you, Jaden. You have a way of believing in people, even when they don't deserve it. Even me."

Jaden gave her a reassuring grin, though his eyes were filled with worry. "It's not about deserving it. It's about understanding each other, you know? Jesse needs time, but he'll come around. I just… I just hope he can forgive you like I did. Because I'm not giving up on him, or you."

Yubel's smile faded, her gaze distant. "You may believe in me, Jaden, but I know the shadows I've left in Jesse's heart. And it will take more than words to heal them."

A gentle silence fell over the room, the bond between Jaden and Yubel as strong and complex as ever. Jaden gave her a small nod of understanding, feeling the weight of her guilt but determined to bridge the gap between his two friends.

"I'll find a way to make things right," he whispered to himself, his eyes drifting closed as Yubel's form faded away.
