Test Results

Bobby's leg bounced as he sat in the chair in the waiting room, all his nervous energy looking for a way out.
"Hey," Athena reached over and rested her hand on his leg, "Whatever the doctor says, you got this, okay? You got this and I'm with you every step of the way."
Bobby managed a warm smile at his wife. What would he do without her? He laid his own hand on top of hers and Athena turned her around, threading their fingers together. She smiled back at him, trying to appear strong, for Bobby's sake. But inside⦠Inside she was screaming.
After the radiation exposure, Bobby had gone in every week for a series of tests. For the first three weeks there had still been trace amounts of cobalt in his system. The doctor remained cautious, but not overly concerned. After the fourth week of tests, Bobby had got a call asking him to come in to go over the results. He'd told her she didn't need to come with him, but Athena had just him a fool and said of course she was coming.
And now here they were. Bobby exuding nervousness while Athena tried to hide hers and support her husband.
"Robert Nash?"
They stood to the call of Bobby's name and followed the nurse down the hall. She led them into a private room and closed the door behind her as she left, telling them the doctor would be in soon.
Bobby blew out a breath and looked at Athena. He attempted to smile, but it came out as more of a grimace.
"This isn't going to be good, is it?" he said.
"We don't know that for sure," Athena tried to reassure him.
"They haven't called and said to come in for the results any other time, why is this different?" Bobby was trying really hard not to panic, but the idea of something being wrong, quite frankly, terrified him. He didn't want to put his family or his through any of the scenarios running through his head.
"Whatever the doctor says, we will face it together," Athena said firmly, holding his face in her hands. She leaned her forehead against his, only pulling away when the door opened and the doctor walked in.
"Mr. and Mrs. Nash," he shook both their hands before sitting down in the chair opposite, "Sorry to have kept you waiting for so long."
"Not a problem," Bobby said, "So, what did you want to talk about?"
"As you know we've been running the same body of tests these last four weeks. This round we noticed some changes."
"What kind of changes?" Athena asked.
"The trace amounts of cobalt in your bloodstream that we were seeing before has increased," the doctor told them, "Your thyroid results came back abnormal and your white blood cell count has escalated. Now, none of those mean anything definitive, we want to run more tests and get some scans done, but all of these things do strongly indicate-"
"Cancer."
I'm a sucker for some angst and good h/c fic so I tend to write a lot of them
