Hunger, exhaustion, sleep-deprived; Kale, Renn and Kale soldiered on through the endless corridors of the Deep roads. One extra step turned into many and for three days they had been traveling hoping to see a turn, a twist…a light.
They all stopped every so often to rest but not for long. Wrayth was still in pursuit, Renn was sure of it.
Rocks were moving under their feet as they moved up a harsh slope. Kale held out his hand and braced Renn as she reached the top of the slope with Argo in tow.
They turned a corner, finally, and Renn's hand flew to her eyes. The light of the sun was pouring through a large crevasse in the rock. Renn's eyes burned. She pulled back and released a breath she did not know she was holding.
Kale turned to her with concern, putting his hand in hers.
"Your eyes are not use to the light."
"I…I don't know if I should" Renn pulled back even further. Argo nuzzled her shoulder almost like he was beckoning her to step back into the world.
"Renn" Kale began, "come…it is time."
He squeezed her hand in reassurance and led her through the crevice, back to the light, back to her world.
Renn's eyes remained shut as she was led through the stone canopy out into the open. So many sounds reached her ears, she felt the breeze envelope her skin; soft and intangible.
The sun was just starting to set as Kale led Renn and Argo to some woodland and they settled in the shade of a large oak. Renn felt the bark and guided herself down to sit at the base.
I don't want to open my eyes. This world is not my mine. My eyes burn even in the weak sunlight just like it knows I belong in the depths where I have just escaped. I am a stranger here yet I have had to return.
"Renn"
Kale pulled her from her thoughts.
"Your eyes will adjust. We should make camp and decide what to do next. Stay here, I will get some wood and stoke a fire"
She heard Kale's footsteps lighten as he walked further away.
Argo nestled his head on Renn's shoulder. Her hand came up to stroke his nose.
"Will you follow me Argo?...Or do you see the dark inside me like black inside a vessel?"
Renn slowly opened her eyes. Her vision was blurred, at first.
Just like when I first emerged from that womb.
She looked herself over. Felt her long blonde hair which was tied back in a messy braid, down to her detailed collar bone. She felt her arms which had began to goosebump from the chill as the day edged away with the setting sun. She passed her fingers over her Tevinter writing tattoos which ran the scale of her extremities. She looked up at the sun with slight hooded eyes which was now just a deformed shape through the trees.
I almost want the sun to stay below the horizon. Once the day dawns tomorrow it will feel like the sun's rays will seek me out like a beacon, illuminating a trespasser on this land.
Kale returned with some firewood and began building the fire.
"We should head west at day break" he began as he was nursing the small flame in the pit. "We should reach Highever by nightfall",
"Highever?!" Renn raised her head to look directly at Kale, who sat opposite her at the fire.
"Your brother Renn! We must seek him out, we cannot go on without help. The Teryn is the closest before we head to Denerim."
"Dener?…Kale…I am grateful for all you have done but…I…I am not going back." Renn stood to her feet.
"What?!" Kale was then on his feet!
Was this on her mind the whole time?
"Renn..what do you mean you are not going back? We are out, we made it but we need help! You heard The Architect, Wrayth is out there hunting you…we cannot face him alone."
"And nor will you" Renn interrupted. " Kale this is not your fight. Wrayth will find me and when he does he will kill all in his path to get what he wants. The only horizon for me now is exile! You can now go, live your life…find a wife and raise a family. Your skill is exemplary, you could join any guard you wished!"
"I cannot believe what I am hearing!" Kale came closer. "You would live a life on the run? How can you be sure that Wrayth will not go for your loved ones…your brother for instance? Wrayth may already think you are heading for Highever…will you take that chance Renn?"
She turned away.
He is right, of course he is right! What if Wrayth goes for Fergus.
Renn turned back to face Kale and stood with the most determined stance he had seen in her.
"Alright but you must not mention Wrayth to my brother OR anyone, they must not know…not yet and especially nothing the Architect said. I dare not think about that right now! Swear it!"
Kale tool a deep sigh "alright…I swear"
