Today was an important day for Sunny, it would be the first time Sunny had gone to school in around 3 - 4 years. By no means would Sunny consider himself nervous for the occasion, school seemed more like a chore to him than anything, but it wasn't like he was going to just skip it all.
Donning the school's uniform, a navy blue sailor suit with a bright red tie, Sunny stood at the entrance to 'Louis Street Academy' looking around for for his new friend, yet Madotsuki seemed to be nowhere in sight, granted it was a bit selfish to assume that the girl Sunny had only met yesterday would be here, but Sunny still had confidence that they would run into each other soon.
Looking around Sunny realised just how many people were attending the school, it was intimidating to say the least. Pushing on, and actually into the school, Sunny walked aimlessly through the halls of the school, trying to locate his homeroom class. The layout of the school was fairly easy to understand, the left side housed students that were 15 and 16, such as Sunny himself who was 16, while the right side was for those ages 17 and 18.
It didn't take too long for Sunny to locate the proper room. Classroom B4, the room had a 5 by 5 square of desks, totaling to 25, one added for Sunny himself. He had to go through the whole process of standing at the front of the class to introduce himself, he hated it. Sunny knew that they were staring at him, staring at the eyepatch, he could even hear the low murmurs of the people gossiping, making up false stories just for the sake of spreading rumours. All eyes were on him.
Except for one, in the far back of class seated next to the window was a girl, she wore the same uniform as did everyone else except the tie was loose, and the jacket was almost falling off her shoulders, the girl had black hair, tied into twin tails. Sunny took note of her, for being the only person not focused on him instead she was looking out the window blankly, it took his mind off all the unwanted attention he was getting, for just a moment.
Sunny got very lucky, his assigned seat was in the back of the class, and next to the same girl he was thinking about,it would diminish the inevitable headache he would get from nosy students asking about the eyepatch. Sunny didn't care much about paying attention in class, It was something he saw more as a chore as opposed to something to focus on, he just needed to get the required work done, and move on.
Inspecting the disinterested girl more closely Sunny's heart sank a little, she was pale, very pale, stark white actually. Sunny had to pinch himself to see if he was dreaming, the black hair, and white skin reminded him too much of OMORI, it was nightmarish to him.
"Um? Do I have something on my face?"
Snapping out of his trace, Sunny felt highly embarrassed, he was basically staring at this person since he got into the classroom.
"No, you don't… I just noticed how pale you are, my name is Sunny by the way"
Sunny scratched the back of his head, trying to save himself from the hole he accidentally dug.
"Oh! I'm Monoko!, but I don't know why my skin is like that, my sister is like it too!"
The girl named Monoko exclaimed excitedly, she didn't look offended by Sunny's words which relieved him, starting an argument on his first day of school is something he would love to avoid, Looking around for something he could use to shift the conversation Sunny noticed Monoko's paper cover in drawings, and sketches.
"I see… Ah! Nice drawings, is that a hobby for you? I enjoy drawing as well, I own a sketchbook"
Sunny was only half telling the truth, while he did like drawing it was an activity he would usually do in white space, a place Sunny would never return to.
"Wow! That's cool, yeah! I wanna be good at drawing just like my friend P–"
Monoko covers her ears as the school bell rings, abruptly cutting off her sentence, Sunny raises a concerned eyebrow.
"Hey, ar- are you okay?"
Monoko squirmed as Sunny reached out a hand in an attempt to comfort the struggling girl. But the ringing bell stopped, and along with it Monoko's episode, she slowly lifted her hands off of her ears, shifting her eyes towards Sunny.
"Yeah… It's ok! I just don't like loud noises, that's all. Are conversion made me forget the time, don't worry"
Monoko gave a smile, but It was obvious she was shaken up from the incident. Sunny decided it was best to not ask questions, it wasn't his place to push for an answer. Instead he pushed their talk into a different direction.
"If you say so… You wouldn't have Music class right now, would you?"
Monoko shakes her head.
"N-no… I'm in Writing class, I can't take Music, for obvious reasons"
"Oh, yeah, um… See you at lunch then? If you want to, of course!"
Monoko's face lights up with excitement when the idea of hanging out later comes up. She seems to have recovered from the school bell.
"Yeah! Okay, see you at lunch Sunny!"
Sunny watched as she ran off with her bookbag. It was nice knowing there was someone he could talk to in this school, yet the day was far from over so he grabbed his bag and exited the room.
Classes proved to be an absolute bore for Sunny, aside from Monoko who of whom he only shared English class with, Sunny had failed to become acquainted with anyone else. The work he had to do was also uninteresting, not difficult thankfully, but certainly not entertaining either.
Currently it was lunch time, and students from both sides of the school flooded the cafeteria to eat. Sunny looked around for both Monoko and Madotsuki, who Sunny was still hoping would be a student attending the same school as him. By surveying the room Sunny and Monoko both spotted each other, Monoko was already sitting down at the opposite end of the room waiting for her new friend.
The two wave at one another from across the room. It didn't take long for Sunny to reach her, and get seated. There were a few other people sitting at the same lunch table, but luckily they never engaged. Sunny was perfectly content with taking his time, getting to know one or two well. as opposed to being acquainted with many at one time.
The two ate in silence for a while neither knowing what to say, it was only after they had finished eating their meal that Monoko spoke up.
"So, Where are you from? Any fears? Favourite food? Drick? Color? Weather? Season?"
"Woah, Woah slow down a bit, okay?"
"But you're my new friend, and that means I want to know everything about you now!"
Sunny was a little overwhelmed, but it was certainly refreshing to see someone ask all these questions about him. Sunny couldn't even remember the last time he made a friend, aside from Matotsuki of course.
"Ok ok… Just one question at a time alright?"
"Okay! Hmmm, what to ask…Oh! What's your opinion on stop lights?!"
Monoko leaned in, giving Sunny a judgemental stare. That confused Sunny as it was pretty straight forward, but a strange question.
"Stop lights? They're okay I suppose? We need them for roads, and stuff…"
Monoko furled her eyebrows, she looked oddly mad which only increased Sunny confusion
"No, stoplights are terrible! I hate them"
She crossed her arms and gave a childish pout.
Sunny held back a laugh, while he was genuinely curious as to why she hated stop lights, the idea was pretty funny to him.
"Can you explain why you dislike stoplights so much?"
"They're so ugly! Terrible! Disgusting!"
Monoko childishly sticks out her tongue to mock the idea of a stop light. Sunny in turn couldn't help but let out a laugh, a small one, but a laugh nonetheless.
"Hey! This is a serious matter, don't laugh!"
After a few more quiet chuckles, Sunny calmed down. It had been awhile since Sunny had laughed, but it's hard to remain straight faced when a girl is talking about her strange disdain for stop lights.
"Okay, okay I'll stop. Here, let's go, I don't want to be the only people left in the cafeteria"
Sunny said, looking around the near empty cafeteria. Monoko, with the mention of going somewhere, shot up from her seat unexpectedly.
"That reminds me! Sunny, follow me, I have a very important meeting with a friend, and you must attend!"
Monoko took off in a random direction forcing Sunny to follow. The two teens entered the school's courtyard. It was a decently sized place surrounded by an iron fence featuring grass, a basketball court, a few picnic tables and a jungle gym. Not too shabby, but Monoko's attention gravitated towards an empty corner where the fence and wall met.
"Monoko, slow down… Who are you even waiting for?"
"My friend! She should be here soon!"
Almost as if in a queue, a person with familiar eyes and hair appeared on the other side of the fence. Madotsuki was wearing similar baggy pants as yesterday, but donned a maroon sweater as opposed to the reddish-pink one, she was also holding a bag of chips.
"Hey Monoko, oh! Funny seeing you again Sunny, what's up!"
Madotsuki gave the two a smile and tossed the chip over the fence, hitting Monoko in the face who grabbed it right after. Sunny was more so surprised at mainly two things, 1. Monoko and Madotsuki being friends, and 2. Madotsuki not being at school.
"Madotsuki? Don't you have school?"
"Huh? Nah I don't go to school silly!"
Sunny was surprised, Madotsuki seemed to be around his age, she even knew Monoko. Was she older than he expected or did she drop out? A few questions arose that Sunny wanted answers to.
"Are you graduated? How old are you in the first place?"
"I'm 18! But I don't go to school, I don't even remember the last time I went"
Madotsuki rubbed her chin for a bit before laughing off, she didn't seem to care, and neither did Monoko who was just eating the bag of chips she was given. Sunny was a little concerned, 18 was a year younger than Hero, but he was in college while she hadn't been school in what Sunny assumed, years.
"Are you doing alright? That sounds bad…"
Madotsuki gave a thumbs up
"Yeah… I'm doing good! What about you two?"
Monoko finished eating her chip bag, and injected herself into the conversation.
"Good! But I didn't know you knew each other though, that means my friends are friends!"
"Hehe, it's good to hear that you two are friends, but I got to run, don't think teachers would be to happy seeing this chip deal"
Madotsuki starts walking away with Monoko waving goodbye.
"Wait, Madotsuki! How are we supposed to hangout if you don't go to school?"
"Hmm, normally I just stumble into people, but if you want to hangout I'll be in the mall at 6:15 should be good enough, new friend!"
Sunny nods, and waves goodbye as Madotsuki walks around a corner, disappearing from the two students' vision.
"So Monoko, do you wanna go to the mall with me and Madotsuki tomorrow?"
Monoko shook her head, looking a little dejected.
"I really wish I could! But I have plans with my sister tomorrow! Maybe another time"
Sunny could hear the bell go off inside the school, luckily it was quiet enough for Monoko to be unbothered by it.
"Oh yeah, don't worry about it. It's important to spend time with your sister… We should probably go back inside, only two more classes"
The last two classes went by smoothly, a tad boring, but Sunny at least shared the classes with Monoko. The two drew, and shared their creations with one another as time passed by.
With the prospect of hanging out with the strange Madotsuki tomorrow, and having a second friend, Sunny seemed to be adjusting well to his new life in Closeby City.
