The sun filtered through the dense canopy, casting patches of light and shadow on the forest floor as Ruby and Blake continued to follow the strange tracks. They'd been at it for a while now, and despite Blake's usual caution, Ruby was as energetic as ever, bounding ahead and then circling back with the kind of enthusiasm that only Ruby could muster.
"Do you think we'll find treasure?" Ruby asked, her silver eyes gleaming as she hopped over a fallen log, landing with a dramatic flourish.
Blake, who was trailing behind at a more measured pace, glanced up from where she'd been studying the tracks. "No."
Ruby pouted. "You didn't even think about it! What if we find some ancient Vacuan relic, or, or—an underground city! Hidden for centuries, just waiting for us to uncover its secrets!"
Blake raised an eyebrow. "Or it's just a weird pattern left by animals."
Ruby waved a hand dismissively. "You lack imagination, Blake. It's got to be something cool!"
Blake didn't reply immediately, instead crouching down to inspect the ground more closely. The tracks they were following weren't normal. They didn't resemble any known Grimm or animal she'd encountered in the past. Thin, precise, and crisscrossing in a deliberate way—this wasn't natural.
"There's definitely something odd about these tracks," Blake finally admitted, her voice thoughtful. "But that doesn't mean it's treasure."
Ruby grinned triumphantly. "Aha! You admit it's weird!"
Blake sighed, standing up and dusting off her hands. "I'm not saying it's treasure, Ruby."
"Yeah, but you're thinking it could be!"
"I'm thinking it could be something dangerous," Blake corrected. "Which is why we need to be careful."
Ruby flashed her a confident grin. "We can handle danger. Remember that time we fought those giant Nevermores in the cave? Or the time with the, uh, exploding Grimm? We got this!"
Blake gave her a deadpan look. "You barely got us out of the cave before it collapsed."
"And it made for a great story!" Ruby said, grinning from ear to ear. "Come on, let's see where these tracks lead. Maybe there's something even more exciting ahead!"
Blake rolled her eyes but followed as Ruby bounded ahead, practically vibrating with excitement.
The further they walked, the stranger the forest became. The trees grew taller, their branches intertwining overhead like a natural ceiling, casting the path in deep shadow. The tracks became more frequent, cutting through the underbrush and winding their way deeper into the heart of the forest.
After another half hour of walking, they reached a dense thicket of vines and foliage, almost like a wall of greenery blocking their way. Ruby came to a stop, placing her hands on her hips as she surveyed the obstacle.
"Looks like we've hit a dead end," Blake said, glancing around. "We should turn back."
But Ruby, of course, had other ideas.
"No way! This is just the entrance to something cool. I bet there's a hidden path behind these vines!" Ruby declared, already pulling Crescent Rose from her back and unfolding it with a satisfying metallic click. "Stand back, Blake. I'm gonna slice our way through!"
Blake sighed, watching as Ruby prepared to cut through the thick vines with her scythe. "Just... try not to destroy everything in the process."
Ruby grinned, raising Crescent Rose dramatically. "I got this!"
With a swift motion, Ruby swung her scythe, cutting cleanly through the vines. Or at least, that was the plan. Instead, the vines seemed to tangle themselves around the blade, wrapping tighter as Ruby tried to pull back.
"Uh... hold on," Ruby muttered, tugging at Crescent Rose. "I've got this under control."
Blake crossed her arms, watching as Ruby struggled with the vines. "Need help?"
"No, no! I've got it!" Ruby insisted, giving another pull.
The vines didn't budge.
Blake let out a soft sigh before stepping forward and gently untangling the vines from Crescent Rose's blade. "You were saying?"
Ruby pouted as Blake effortlessly cleared the path. "You know, one of these days I'll do something cool without you having to save me."
Blake smirked. "I'm sure you will."
Once the vines were cleared away, they found what Ruby had been hoping for—an overgrown path hidden behind the thicket, leading deeper into the forest. Ruby's eyes lit up at the sight.
"See? I told you there'd be something cool behind the vines!" she said triumphantly.
Blake shook her head but couldn't help the small smile on her lips. "Alright, let's see where this leads."
They stepped onto the hidden path, the thick canopy above making it feel like they were entering an entirely new world. The air was cooler here, the scent of damp earth and moss filling the space around them. The ground beneath their feet was uneven, as if the path hadn't been walked in years, and the strange tracks they'd been following continued along it, more prominent than before.
Ruby, of course, was full of excitement, her eyes darting around as she took in the sights. "This is so cool! I bet we're the first ones to find this in, like, forever!"
Blake was less enthusiastic, her senses sharp as she kept a wary eye on their surroundings. "Just stay alert. We don't know what's down here."
Ruby waved a hand. "You worry too much, Blake. We've handled worse than some spooky forest."
As they walked deeper along the hidden path, they began to notice strange markings on the trees—similar to the symbols they'd seen near the stone circle. The symbols were carved into the bark, intricate and precise, but Blake couldn't decipher their meaning.
"These markings..." Blake muttered, running her fingers over one of the symbols. "They look familiar."
Ruby, who had been bouncing around excitedly, stopped and peered at the symbol. "Ooh, maybe it's a treasure map! Or—wait, what if it's some kind of ancient code?"
Blake gave her a skeptical look. "I doubt it's a treasure map."
Ruby shrugged, grinning. "A girl can dream."
They continued following the path, the markings growing more frequent as they went. The further they walked, the more the forest seemed to close in around them, the air growing stiller and the shadows deeper. Despite her earlier enthusiasm, even Ruby was starting to pick up on the strange atmosphere.
"Okay, I'll admit... this place is kinda spooky," Ruby said, her voice quieter than before.
Blake nodded, her senses on high alert. "Let's keep moving. We're close to something—I can feel it."
Just as the tension was starting to build, Ruby's foot caught on a root, and she stumbled forward with a yelp, nearly face-planting into the ground. Blake, quick as ever, grabbed her by the collar and steadied her before she could fall.
Ruby blinked, her cheeks flushing slightly. "Uh... thanks."
Blake smirked. "Careful. I'm not going to save you every time."
Ruby grinned sheepishly. "Noted."
As they pushed forward, the path took a sharp turn, and ahead of them, partially hidden by more overgrown foliage, was a large stone structure. It looked ancient, weathered by time, and covered in moss, but there was no mistaking it—it was a doorway, leading into what appeared to be some kind of underground passage.
Ruby's eyes widened in excitement. "Blake! Look! We found something cool!"
Blake, however, was less thrilled. "Or something dangerous."
Ruby waved off the concern, already making her way toward the entrance. "Come on, let's check it out!"
Blake sighed, but followed. "We need to be careful. Who knows what's down there."
As they approached the doorway, Ruby grinned over her shoulder. "Well, we won't know until we find out, right?"
Blake shook her head but couldn't help the smile that tugged at her lips. Even after all the loops, Ruby's enthusiasm was infectious.
"Alright," Blake said, stepping up beside her. "Let's see what's inside."
The stone doorway loomed before them, covered in moss and vines, as if it had been forgotten by time itself. Ruby's eyes sparkled with excitement, while Blake's expression remained cautious, her senses on high alert.
"This is so cool," Ruby whispered, her voice tinged with awe as she ran her fingers over the ancient stone. "We're like... real explorers! Just like in the movies."
Blake raised an eyebrow. "You do realize those movies usually end with people running from traps or giant boulders, right?"
Ruby grinned, clearly unbothered by Blake's warning. "Well, if that happens, I'm totally ready! We'll dodge the traps, avoid the boulders, and maybe even find a secret treasure along the way."
Blake sighed but smiled. Ruby's boundless energy and enthusiasm were impossible to resist, and despite her better judgment, Blake felt a flicker of curiosity herself. There was something about this place—something old and mysterious. And while it might not lead to treasure, it could lead to answers.
"Alright," Blake said, stepping forward and brushing aside the vines that covered the doorway. "Let's go."
They stepped into the passage, the stone walls narrowing around them as the light from the forest dimmed behind them. The air was cool and still, carrying the scent of damp stone and earth. Their footsteps echoed softly as they moved deeper into the darkness, their only source of light the faint glow from Ruby's scroll.
"Man, this place is creepy," Ruby muttered, her voice low as she glanced around the narrow hallway. "You think anyone's been here before?"
Blake shook her head, her eyes scanning the walls for any signs of danger. "I doubt it. There are no signs of recent activity. Whoever built this place—it's been abandoned for a long time."
Ruby hummed in agreement, though her curiosity didn't wane. She let her fingers trail along the walls as they walked, her eyes darting between the strange symbols and carvings that adorned the stone. The deeper they went, the more intricate the designs became—spirals, geometric shapes, and lines that crisscrossed in a pattern neither of them could decipher.
"You think these are some kind of ancient runes?" Ruby asked, pausing to study one particularly large symbol carved into the stone.
Blake knelt beside her, examining the markings closely. "It's possible. But I've never seen anything like them before."
Ruby squinted at the carvings. "Maybe it's like... a code? Ooh, maybe it's a puzzle! We have to solve it to open a secret door!"
Blake raised an eyebrow. "You've been watching too many adventure movies."
Ruby shrugged. "Hey, you never know. Stranger things have happened."
As they continued deeper into the passage, the air grew cooler, and the faint sound of dripping water echoed through the stone corridors. Ruby remained excited, her mind racing with possibilities of what they might find, while Blake's wariness only increased. The narrowness of the passage, the strange symbols, the eerie stillness—it all felt too deliberate, as if the place had been constructed with a purpose they couldn't yet understand.
Suddenly, Ruby stopped in her tracks, her eyes widening as she pointed ahead. "Look!"
Blake followed her gaze and saw what had caught Ruby's attention. At the end of the hallway, the passage opened up into a larger chamber, the ceiling rising high above them. And in the center of the room stood a large stone pedestal, atop which rested a glowing orb, pulsing softly with light.
Ruby gasped, her excitement bubbling over. "It's just like in the movies! The secret artifact that holds the key to everything!"
Blake frowned, stepping cautiously into the chamber. "Or it's a trap."
Ruby ignored her, already moving closer to the pedestal. "Come on, Blake! This is awesome! Look at this thing! It's glowing!"
Blake sighed, staying close behind Ruby as they approached the pedestal. The orb was mesmerizing, its soft blue light flickering like a heartbeat, casting long shadows across the chamber. It was small—no bigger than a fist—but it seemed to radiate an energy that made the hair on the back of Blake's neck stand on end.
"We shouldn't touch it," Blake warned, her voice firm.
Ruby was already leaning closer, her eyes wide as she inspected the orb. "But what if it's, like, really important? What if it's the key to something huge?"
Blake placed a hand on Ruby's shoulder, pulling her back gently. "Or it's dangerous. We need to be careful."
Ruby pouted but didn't argue. "Fine. But we have to do something, right? We can't just leave it here."
Blake considered their options, her gaze lingering on the orb. There was something about it that felt... wrong. It wasn't just the way it glowed, or the strange energy it seemed to give off—it was the fact that it had been placed here, at the center of the chamber, as if waiting for someone to find it.
"Let's see if there's anything else in the room," Blake said, turning her attention to the walls of the chamber. "There might be clues about what this is."
Ruby, despite her excitement, nodded in agreement and began circling the room, scanning the walls for more symbols or markings. Blake did the same, her eyes scanning every inch of the stone, looking for anything that might help them understand what they were dealing with.
After a few minutes, Ruby called out, "Blake! Over here!"
Blake turned to see Ruby crouched in front of a section of the wall that was covered in more intricate carvings. As Blake approached, she saw that the symbols were different from the others they'd seen—larger, more detailed, and arranged in a circular pattern around a central image.
Ruby pointed at the carvings, her eyes wide. "It looks like... people."
Blake knelt beside her, studying the symbols. Ruby was right—etched into the stone were figures that resembled people, standing in a circle around what looked like the glowing orb they'd found in the center of the chamber. The figures were reaching toward the orb, their hands outstretched as if they were offering something to it.
Blake's frown deepened. "This doesn't feel right."
Ruby tilted her head. "You think these people made the orb?"
Blake hesitated. "Maybe. Or maybe they were trying to contain it."
Ruby blinked, her grin faltering slightly. "Contain it? Like... it's dangerous?"
Blake stood up, her gaze shifting back to the glowing orb in the center of the room. "I don't know. But we should be careful."
Ruby nodded slowly, her excitement tempered by Blake's caution. "So... what do we do?"
Blake thought for a moment, her mind racing as she tried to make sense of what they'd found. The orb, the carvings, the strange symbols—it all pointed to something ancient, something powerful. But whether it was friend or foe, they couldn't be sure.
"We'll take notes, record what we can," Blake said finally. "And then we'll decide what to do with the orb."
Ruby, ever the optimist, nodded eagerly. "Sounds like a plan! I'll get the scroll ready!"
As Ruby pulled out her scroll to begin documenting the carvings, Blake couldn't shake the feeling that they were on the verge of something much bigger than they'd anticipated. The forest, the strange tracks, the hidden passage—it was all connected. But what it all meant, they still didn't know.
Blake glanced back at the glowing orb, its light pulsing steadily in the darkness. Whatever it was, it was only the beginning.
Ruby crouched by the carvings, her scroll in hand as she snapped pictures of the intricate symbols. She was still buzzing with excitement, her fingers practically flying over the screen as she documented everything.
"I mean, just look at this stuff!" Ruby exclaimed, her voice echoing slightly in the chamber. "It's so detailed! Whoever made this was definitely trying to tell us something."
Blake stood nearby, arms crossed, her eyes still on the glowing orb. She couldn't shake the uneasy feeling that had settled in the pit of her stomach since they entered the chamber. There was something about the carvings, the orb, and the entire place that felt... wrong.
"You're sure it's a good idea to record all this?" Blake asked, her voice soft but laced with concern. "We still don't know what any of it means."
Ruby waved off her concern with a grin. "Relax, Blake. It's just pictures! Plus, this is totally awesome. How many times do we get to document a secret underground ruin?"
Blake sighed, but she knew there was no stopping Ruby when she was this excited. "Just be careful."
Ruby flashed her a thumbs-up and continued to take pictures, making sure to get every angle of the carvings. As she worked, Blake circled the room again, keeping her distance from the orb in the center. The symbols on the walls told a story—one she couldn't yet decipher—but it was clear that the orb had played a central role in whatever had taken place here.
"Hey, Blake," Ruby called out suddenly, her voice quieter than before. "I think I found something... weird."
Blake turned, immediately alert. "What is it?"
Ruby knelt beside one of the carvings, her expression more serious than it had been moments ago. "Look at this."
Blake joined her, crouching down to examine the section Ruby had pointed out. It was another series of figures, similar to the ones they'd seen before, but this time... something was different. The figures weren't just reaching for the orb—they were recoiling from it. Their hands were raised, not in offering, but in defense, as if trying to shield themselves from whatever the orb was doing.
Blake's frown deepened. "That's not a good sign."
Ruby nodded slowly, her excitement dimming. "Yeah... Maybe the orb wasn't such a great thing after all."
Blake stood up, her gaze shifting back to the glowing orb in the center of the room. "We need to figure out what this thing is. If it's dangerous, we can't just leave it here."
Ruby bit her lip, her usual enthusiasm tempered by caution. "But how do we figure that out? We don't even know what these symbols mean."
Blake was about to respond when something caught her eye—a faint movement in the shadows near the back of the chamber. She froze, her hand instinctively reaching for Gambol Shroud.
"Ruby," she said quietly, her voice tense. "Did you see that?"
Ruby blinked, confused. "See what?"
Blake didn't respond, her eyes fixed on the spot where she'd seen the movement. The shadows danced along the walls, flickering in the soft light of the orb, but for a moment... there had been something else. Something watching them.
"I think we're not alone," Blake whispered, her muscles tensing as she prepared for whatever might come next.
Ruby immediately jumped to her feet, her eyes darting around the chamber. "Grimm?"
Blake shook her head slowly. "No. Something else."
Ruby's grip on Crescent Rose tightened, her eyes wide and alert. "Well, that's not creepy at all."
They both stood in silence, their eyes scanning the room, but the shadows remained still. The faint dripping of water echoed through the chamber, and the soft pulse of the orb continued, but there was no further movement.
After what felt like an eternity, Blake let out a slow breath. "Maybe I imagined it..."
Ruby relaxed slightly, though she still kept Crescent Rose at the ready. "You've been hanging out with me too much. Now you're seeing things."
Blake shot her a look but didn't argue. There was no sense in jumping at shadows—not when they already had a mystery to solve. Still, her instincts told her to remain cautious.
"I think we've seen enough here," Blake said, her voice firm. "Let's head back to camp and regroup. We can try to figure out what all this means later."
Ruby hesitated, glancing back at the glowing orb one last time. "You sure? We're not going to take the orb with us?"
Blake shook her head. "We don't know what it is, or what it's capable of. Until we understand it, it's better to leave it here."
Ruby's shoulders slumped slightly, but she nodded. "Yeah, you're probably right. I guess it'd be kind of weird to carry a mysterious glowing orb around."
Blake couldn't help but smile at Ruby's disappointment. "We'll figure it out. Just... not right now."
With one last look at the chamber and the carvings, Ruby and Blake turned to leave. The passage they'd entered through loomed ahead, the shadows seeming to grow darker as they approached.
As they stepped through the doorway, a soft sound echoed behind them—a faint, almost inaudible whisper, like the wind passing through the stones. Blake's ears twitched, but she didn't turn around.
"Did you hear that?" Ruby asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
Blake nodded. "Let's keep moving."
They made their way back through the narrow passage, their footsteps echoing softly in the darkness. The strange carvings on the walls seemed to shift as the light from Ruby's scroll flickered over them, the intricate designs now taking on a more sinister tone.
Ruby stayed close to Blake as they walked, her usual chatter replaced by quiet murmurs. "Do you think we stumbled onto something bad?"
Blake didn't answer right away. Her thoughts were racing, her mind trying to piece together the mystery of the orb and the carvings. "I don't know. But whatever it is... it's old. And powerful."
They reached the entrance of the passage, the cool night air brushing against their skin as they stepped out into the forest once again. The moonlight filtered through the trees, casting long shadows across the ground, but the familiar sights and sounds of the woods were comforting after the oppressive atmosphere of the underground chamber.
Ruby let out a long breath, her shoulders relaxing. "Okay. That was definitely one of the weirder things we've found."
Blake nodded, though her thoughts were still on the glowing orb and the strange figures in the carvings. There was something unsettling about it all—something she couldn't shake. "We should head back to camp and regroup. Maybe we can make sense of all this after we've had some rest."
Ruby agreed, though her excitement wasn't entirely gone. "Yeah, you're right. But I'm telling you, Blake—this is big. We've definitely uncovered something awesome."
Blake smiled despite her unease. Ruby's enthusiasm was contagious, even in the strangest of situations. "We'll figure it out. But for now, let's get some sleep."
As they made their way back through the forest, the night seemed calmer, more peaceful. But the mystery of the glowing orb lingered in their minds, and Blake couldn't help but wonder if their discovery was only the beginning of something much larger.
The moon hung high in the sky by the time Ruby and Blake returned to their campsite. The forest had returned to its peaceful state, the distant sounds of nocturnal creatures filling the air as they approached the clearing. The fire pit they'd set up earlier flickered faintly, casting soft orange light over the ground.
Ruby plopped down onto one of the logs with a dramatic sigh, tossing her scroll into her lap. "Okay, that was... weird. Even for us."
Blake, less theatrical in her movements, sat down next to her, eyes still scanning the treeline. "We've seen weirder."
Ruby huffed, leaning back and staring up at the stars. "Yeah, but this felt... different. Usually, we're dealing with Grimm or some evil mastermind. But that orb? Those carvings? It's like we stumbled onto something ancient. Something not meant to be found."
Blake was silent for a moment, her thoughts still on the eerie symbols and the glowing orb. Ruby had a point. The Grimm, Beacon, their usual enemies—all of that felt familiar. But this? This felt like they had touched something far older, and far more dangerous.
"Do you think it's tied to the loops?" Ruby asked quietly, her voice less energetic than before. "I mean, we've seen all sorts of stuff during these loops, but this... this is new."
Blake pondered that for a moment. The loops—they had been living through countless iterations, but each one, while unique in its own way, followed certain patterns. This, however, felt like something outside those patterns. Like a new element had been introduced.
"It's possible," Blake finally said, her voice thoughtful. "But if it is tied to the loops, we haven't seen anything like it before."
Ruby sat up, pulling her knees to her chest. "Do you think... this time is different? I mean, maybe this loop is changing. Maybe we'll finally get some answers."
Blake hesitated. They had been through hundreds—maybe thousands—of loops. Each one had its own quirks, its own variations, but they always ended the same way. They reset, and they started again. What Ruby was suggesting... that this loop was different... It was both exciting and unsettling.
"Maybe," Blake said softly. "But we can't jump to conclusions. We need more information."
Ruby nodded, though her eyes still shone with that familiar spark of excitement. "Yeah. Information. Right. I'm totally gonna read up on ancient symbols tonight."
Blake raised an eyebrow. "You? Read?"
Ruby gasped in mock offense, clutching her heart dramatically. "I can read, thank you very much!"
Blake smirked. "Sure. I've just never seen you choose to read."
Ruby stuck out her tongue but didn't argue further, instead pulling out her scroll and flipping through the pictures she had taken. The glowing orb, the carvings, the figures—they were all there, preserved in digital form, waiting to be analyzed.
"We should send this to Weiss," Ruby suggested, her voice suddenly serious. "She'd probably know what these symbols mean."
Blake nodded. "Good idea. And Yang might have some insight too. We need all the help we can get."
Ruby was quiet for a moment, staring at her scroll. "You think they're okay? Yang and Weiss, I mean. They're probably back at Beacon by now."
Blake smiled softly. "Knowing them, they're probably getting into trouble."
Ruby snickered. "Yeah, you're probably right. But they're gonna be so jealous when they find out we found a secret underground chamber."
"They'll get over it," Blake said, her voice warm. "And we'll have plenty of stories to tell them when we get back."
They sat in comfortable silence for a while, the crackling of the fire the only sound between them. Despite the strange discoveries they'd made, the campsite felt safe. Familiar. And for a moment, Blake allowed herself to relax.
Ruby, of course, couldn't stay still for long.
"So... you wanna hear my theory?" Ruby asked, her voice full of energy again.
Blake sighed, but the corners of her mouth twitched into a smile. "Do I have a choice?"
"Nope!" Ruby said brightly, scooting closer. "Okay, so, here's what I think. That orb we found? It's totally a key. Like, a key to some ancient vault or secret treasure. And the carvings? Those were probably warnings, but the people who made them were like, 'We gotta keep this thing safe, but also, let's make it super hard to understand so no one knows what's going on.' You know, typical ancient people stuff."
Blake listened patiently, nodding along. "So your theory is that we found an ancient key... to what? A treasure?"
Ruby nodded enthusiastically. "Exactly! Or maybe something even cooler! Like... I don't know, an ancient power source! Or a portal to another dimension!"
Blake chuckled softly. "A portal to another dimension? Really?"
Ruby grinned. "Hey, we've seen weirder things, haven't we?"
Blake couldn't argue with that. "True. But let's not jump to conclusions. We still don't know what the orb does."
Ruby pouted but didn't push the point. "Yeah, yeah. You and your 'logic.' I get it."
They fell into a comfortable silence again, the crackling fire providing a soft backdrop to their thoughts. Despite everything, Ruby seemed at ease, her usual excitement tempered by the mystery they had stumbled upon. Blake, on the other hand, couldn't shake the feeling that there was more to all of this than they realized.
"What if this is just the beginning?" Blake said quietly, more to herself than to Ruby.
Ruby glanced over at her. "What do you mean?"
Blake sighed, running a hand through her hair. "This orb, the carvings, the strange tracks in the forest... it feels like we've barely scratched the surface. What if there's more to this loop than we're seeing?"
Ruby tilted her head, her expression thoughtful. "You think this loop is different?"
Blake hesitated before nodding. "Yeah. I think it might be."
Ruby smiled, though it was softer than her usual grin. "Then that means we've got a lot more adventuring to do, huh?"
Blake chuckled. "Yeah. I guess it does."
They sat by the fire a little longer, the weight of their discovery lingering in the air between them. But for now, at least, the night was peaceful, and the forest around them was quiet. Whatever mysteries the loop held, they would face them together, as they always had.
"Alright," Ruby said suddenly, standing up and stretching her arms above her head. "I think it's time for bed. Big day of adventuring tomorrow!"
Blake smiled, standing up as well. "Yeah. Let's get some rest."
As they made their way into their tents, Ruby's voice echoed softly in the night. "You think we'll find more ancient ruins tomorrow?"
Blake chuckled, pulling the flap of her tent closed. "With you? Probably."
