A few months after Daryl had left the settlement of kids, Clark had gone to the research group after getting a message from the head scientist.
"You wanted to see me?" asked Clark as she walked up to a kid boy with glasses wearing a lab coat and holding a clipboard.
"Yeah, because we have a major problem with one of our walkers," said a scientist while leading him to a containment area that had the lights on.
"Why is that thing not tied up?!" asked Clark after seeing a walker that was walking around in an area behind a large window. Two kids were standing on the opposite side of the glass with guns at the ready.
"So you can see this," said the scientist before pressing a button which dropped a gun from the ceiling.
"You're kidding," said a horrified Clark who watched the walker pick up the weapon and hold it as if it planned to shoot but when it pulled the trigger nothing happened.
"We triple checked to make sure it was unloaded before this," said the scientist.
"H… how is this possible?" asked Clark.
"The virus is starting to evolve," said the scientist.
"Scouts have reported seeing walkers who can open doors, climb walls, and even use weapons just like you saw," he said while motioning back to the walker.
"We'll have to be even more careful now, but how does this affect your research; I'm sure that this will hurt it, right?" asked Clark.
"I think this can actually improve it," said the scientist.
"Alright, keep me informed on the situation," said Clark as he began to leave.
"Will do," said the scientist. Later, after he had returned to his house.
"What did the research group want to talk to you about?" asked Zeek who was making dinner.
"Oh you know, walkers that can use weapons," said Clark.
"Tell me that you are joking," said Zeek who turned away from the stove to stare at his friend with a terrified expression.
"Turns out those things are starting to evolve and are now able to do all kinds of things," said Clark while making eye contact with the other boy.
"Great," said Zeek.
