Chapter 3 Pray On The Run

Cathy could only sit there frozen as the blue orb came rushing at her face. For the second time today she was shoved to the side by Sophie, she let out a small grunt as she was suddenly pulled to her feet by her friend.

"Quickly, you have to get that journal to Dante Vale!" She shouted as she began to drag her towards the front door. Only to stop as two more suited people blocked the exit of her apartment. A tall brown haired man running to his shoulders, and a red haired woman. Her hair done in a long pony tail. Both wearing sunglasses, same as the man in her living room.

Without missing a beat, she began to push her forward. With one final shove Sophie forced her through the two suits knocking them to the ground. Cathy slammed her shoulder in to the wall, a jolt of pain shooting through her collarbone and shoulder at the impact.

Turning back to her friend she let out a gasp, Sophie had been blocked off by the two suits who recovered from the ground. The brown haired man shot his hand out towards Sophie. A golden glow running through his finger.

"Raypluse!" The man shouted out as a stream of golden and yellow lighting shot out, aiming at Sophie. The girl merely ducked down as the pulse went past her and impacted the wall. A small explosion causing a crater to form on the now damaged wall. She then proceeded to charge the two suits, with a grunt she did an agile summersault over the two of them.

She quickly grabbed Cathy's hand and proceeded to sprint to the stairwell. "Who are those people?" Cathy barely managed to choke out as she tried to not have a panic attack. Her breath already heavy due to fear and adrenaline.

"trouble, just stick with me as close as you can." Sophie replied, her tone even and clam. After reaching the outside of the building they began to run through the alleyways of Venice. Cathy looked behind her as she saw the people from her apartment. Only to her horror as they began to jump from ledges and the sides of the buildings. Their legs covered in a faint blue glow.

"What in the world is going on, what are they?" She yelled out as they turned down another alleyway, as they made it around the corner, Cathy felt an explosion go off behind her. She turned a new shade of pale. If they were just a little slower they would be goners in that moment.

"No time, we need to get you and the book to Dante Vale. He will know what to do." Sophie explained as they kept running only to stop and see to more suited people at the end of the alley. One silvered hair man, and another man with tan skin and chestnut brown hair.

Cathy let out a gasp as she stopped behind Sophie. "Please, not more of them." She groaned out as her hand was grabbed again as they cut down a path to their right. As she heard the footsteps of the two man rushing after them.

Reaching the end of the alleyway, she looked on in horror as it was a dead end. "What are we going to do ?" She asked her friend, her voice shaky from fear and all the running. Sophie merely ran to the wall placing her back to it.

"Quick I will give you a leg up." She cupped her hands and bent her knees, confident green eyes staring at unsure blue eyes. Taking one moment to stable her self, Cathy ran to her friend and was lifted over the wall. She quickly turned around to reach for her friend only to realize she was caught by the two men.

"Sophie no !" She called out,her free hand reached out in vain, wishing she could take her hand. Sophie struggled against the two suits, her gaze meeting Cathy's. "Don't worry about me, they are after the journal. Just make sure to get the book to Dante!"

Cathy sat there hesitating, not wanting to leave her friend behind. Before she could protest, Sophie delivered a sharp elbow to the man on her left forcing him off her. Reaching around she grabbed the man on her right with her now free hand, and threw him over her shoulder slamming him into the other man.

Sophie looked back to her, frowning as she was still sitting on the wall. "I can take care of my self, now go !" She yelled out as she began sprinting back down the alleyway. The two suits still on the ground groaning in pain.

Cathy merely nodded dumbfounded, as she jumped off the wall sprinting toward the market district. Wanting to lose them in the crowd. After a few minutes she made her way to the city square. Walked under one of the archways she clenched the journal to her chest, trying to keep calm.

As she looked around she noticed the man and woman from her apartment. Fear overtook her as she slammed her back to one of the pillars behind her. Holding her breath, as if any little sound would give her away.

She looked around the pillar, seeing if the two had left. "The woman went somewhere this way." The soft voice of the red head spoke out. The brown haired man put a hand to his forehead. "Man if Lok hears about this, I'll never hear the end of it."

At the sound of her brother's name, her eyes opened in shock. No, she scolded herself mentally. Don't be stupid, the odds of it being her brother was absolutely foolish. However a small thought of what if came to the forefront of her mind. Shaking her head of the thought, she looked around realizing the coast was clear. She quickly made her way out of the square. Needing somewhere to clear her mind.

Cathy had made her way to the top of one of the buildings, resting her elbows against the railing over looking Venice. She let out a deep sigh, finally having a moment to herself. Looking down at the cause of her problems, she gently opened the book to one of the many random pages it contained.

Reading a few of the pages, she came to realize who ever owned the journal took impeccable notes. "The secrets of the ancient amulet of will sleeps with the golem." She read out loud. Tilting her head in confusion. "What ever the amulet of will is." Flipping through a few more pages, a green glow emitted from her left pocket, as she raised a brow. "What are the titans ?"

"what do you have there friend ?" A small raspy high pitched voice called out. Cathy immediately shut the book and spun in her heels as she looked around. Her eyes scanning the area around her. Thankfully, or unfortunately she didn't see a suit or sunglasses in sight.

"who's there ? Who said that?" She called out as she began walking around the balcony, her eyes laser focused. Keeping an eye out for any strange colored beam coming her way.

"Just looking for someone to talk to. Those goons were on your back, so I figured you were a friend." The voice called out playfully, Cathy feeling a little more safe. Realizing that if the voice wasn't with them, it wasn't necessarily against her.

"I could use a friend right about now, want to come on out ?" She said sweetly, hopefully seeing the person who was watching her. If not to actually get someone to help.

"unfortunately I can not, people won't like it if I'm spotted during the day light." Cathy heard as she walked by some statues of small winged creatures. Letting out a small defeated sigh, she went back to resting on the guard rail. "Well that's too bad." She stated with a huff.

"Tell me lass, is it true you know nothing about amulets ?" The voice now sounded curious, Cathy couldn't help but think about the question. Shrugging her shoulders, not knowing if the voice could see her or not. "I mean, amulets have a variety of meanings, or just a piece of jewelry. Why do you ask ?"

The voice simply sneakered for a moment. "Well you have one, in your pocket there." Cathy's eyes opened in remembrance, she quickly fetched the amulet out of her pocket and held it up in the air.

"You mean something like this ?" She asked out before bringing it to her gaze. Staring at it for a few moments, it was pretty. Well made, but the more she looked at it. The more she felt something call out to her. She put it back in her pocket so it could be safe and sound.

"The next time you are in trouble, concentrate on that amulet. Never know when it could come in handy." Cathy merely rolled her eyes. Wondering how an amulet could help her. Taking a chance she held the journal up in the air.

"Ever seen this before ?" She called out hoping someone or something could shed a little bit more light on the book. Placing it back in front of her she traced the emblem on the front of the book.

"Can't say I have, what don't you check the inside front cover ?" The voice answered, thinking about the suggestion she quickly opened the book. Reading the page should couldn't help but gasp out. "It's my Dads name on the page!"

She closed the journal gently, her grip on the book softened slightly. Treating the book with more care as if the slightest bit of pressure would break it. "He disappeared twelve years ago." She spoke out softly.

"I'm sorry to hear that, that is truly sad." The voice stated before it let out gasp followed by an explosion going off near her. "Look out !" Was all the voice could say as Cathy quickly shot up and looked around.

Looking out across the roofs in the distance she could see a trio of suits, the blonde man, the red haired woman, and the brown haired man that said the same name as her brother. Seeing the blonde's hand raised in the air as the familiar blue light shined from his palm.

She quickly began to run to the other side of the balcony, seeing the railing and the rooftop across from it. With a determinan look she followed through and jumped off the balcony. Realizing she may have bitten off more than she can chew, she let out a small gasp as a green glow overcame her.

Realizing she was falling at a slow speed, as if she was walking on air, she stabled her self and landed on the roof gracefully. Turning to look back at the suits, they had begun to chase after her. Their legs coated in a blue glow, as the distance between the two of them got smaller and smaller.

"Hopefully this works!" She yelled out to her self as she jumped off the roof, concentrating on the feeling she had before. A green glow covered her once again, as she began a slow decent. She jumped off the wall of a building moving herself forward. Grabbing a hanging ledge she swung herself over to a small bridge over a waterway. Landing with a soft thud, she looked down to her hands bewilderment.

"What the hell?" Was all she could say as she gave her self a once over. She quickly let out a small laugh as she went to sprint off the bridge. Unfortunately the suits blocked her off both sides. The brown hair suit placed his hands up in the universal sign of peace.

"Hey, look. We just want the journal, hand it over and we all walk away happy." His voice was soft as he took a step towards her. She reflexively pressed her back against the railing. Looking over the railing she paused, thinking about taking a dive.

"Hey, look at me. Cathy right ?" He said as he reached up and pulled his glasses off his face, showing sincere onyx eyes. "My name is Owen, we don't want to hurt you. We just want that." He pointed his finger to the book in her hands.

On instinct she held it to her chest, her eyes glaring between the two of them. Cathy's head shot to the red haired woman as she began to charge towards her. "Just hand over the journal."

Cathy's mind being made up for her, she quickly jumped over the railing. She went to hold her breath until she suddenly stopped falling. The journal flying from her grasp and hitting the water below. "Are you crazy lady?" She heard the man ask.

Her eyes turned to glare at him. "That was my Fathers you creep!" She roared out as she reached up and struck his arm making him let go. As her arm became free she immediately dove into the water.

Owen could only stare down at the water a shocked expression on his face. His hand gripping the railing tightly. He let out a sigh as he turned to his fellow suits."she dove in the water."

The read head, Diana crossed her arms looking unimpressed. "We would have had her, only if you didn't decide to play good guy." Owen just his head, wasn't worth it he thought to himself as he placed his glasses back on.

The blonde man, Vince spoke up. "Now's not the time to play the blame game. We need to report to Defoe." The three nodded to each other. Before taking off to the make shift command center, with Vince leading the pack.

"What about Tony and James ?" Owen called out keeping up with the other two. Diana merely scoffed at the thought. Owen was not really liking the camaraderie with his make shift team.

"After they scrapped themselves off the ground they lost sight of the girl. They will meet us at the meeting point." Vince stated simple as the three fell into an uncomfortable silence. Owen merely let out sigh, Lok wasn't going to let him live this down. He thought to him self.

Venice, Italy

"Ah the water ways of Vince's, aren't they lovely gentleman?" The man asked nonchalantly. The man's name is Defo, an older gentleman in his late thirties. Wearing a dark green jacket, over a red shirt with a button below the collar. Dark green suit pants, with black loafers.

Grier merely nodded still standing to attention, as Lok was simply lounging against one of the black cars. Hands in his pockets, Incubane's amulet tucked safely under his shirt.

Defoe turned to face the two blondes, pushing his yellow tined sunglasses up his nose. His brown ponytail swaying with the wind. "And yet my old enemy Dante Vale set up shop around here. What's say after we complete this assignment we go pay him a visit hm?" He asked playfully walking up to them.

Grier nodded as he looked down to Defoe's eyes. "Sir if those are your orders, consider it done sir." Lok merely rolled his eyes, thankful for the sunglasses on his face. He simple shrugged his shoulders. "I don't see why we couldn't, two birds and all that." He gave Defoe an innocent smile.

Defoe just nodded his head as he turned back to the water ways. "Very good gentlemen, very good. I believe you both have bright futures here in the organization." Lok just laid is head back, feeling the muscles in his neck stretch ever so slightly.

He was bored to say the least, he felt as Defoe was just enjoying having two hyper lethal attack dogs at his side. Hanging on his every word. However he was in charge. So not much could be done about it.

"Defoe sir !" A male voice called out, Lok lazily turned his head to the three approaching suits. Owen being one of them. Seeing his bummed and hesitant expression, he concluded one thing before any words were said. They failed.

"Report." Was all Defoe said as he gave the three suits his undivided attention. Owen, Vince, and Diana looked between each other nervously as Vince became the de facto leader of their entourage. Stepping forward he almost looked like he wanted to gulp.

"sir the woman got away. We lost her as she took a dive into the canal" Lok could only raise a brow towards the group. Five elite suits can't take down one person? A non seeker at that. Ether they were slacking or someone was interfering.

Defoe made his thoughts on the matter very clear, he wasn't happy at all. "Sir, there was another person with her. A girl, she gave us some resistance." Vince quickly added hoping to spare him and his team some of Defoe's rage.

Girls and trouble, some of Lok's favorite things. What do you get when you put them both together? A curious Lok, and you know what happens when a bored Lok gets curious? Trouble of course. Wanting to complete the full one eighty, he nudged himself off the car and made his way to Defoe.

Clearing his throat he gave Defoe his best smile. "You know sir, if she was as much trouble they say. I can investigate it for you." He offered up politely, praying to what ever devine being in the sky that he would listen.

Defoe rubbed his chin in thought, taking a moment to scan over the group at his disposal. "Fine, but take Jenna with you. I'm authorizing you all to use your amulets. Don't worry about clean up. We will deal with that later." Defoe walked away from the group his arms behind his back. "The journal must be found at once !" He shouted out to his personal soldiers.

After receiving their orders the suits moved out. Owen stopped beside Lok to place a hand on his shoulder. "Be careful man, I got a bad feeling about this." He gave the blonde a nod, and Jenna a playful wink and went on his way.

Lok just smiled hungrily, finally after hours of sitting around he could stretch his legs. Rushing towards the nearest building he let a small laugh escape his lips.

"come on Jenny let's go play." He breathed out as he began to run faster hearing Jenna making some sort of threat about using her not so popular nickname.

"Hyperstride!" He yelled out as a blue light coated his legs. Jumping from the ground he began to dash building to building. Leaving broken ground below his feet after each stride.

With one not so happy Jenna behind him, trying to keep up with the energetic blonde. Keeping a few feet behind him the entire time.

Venice,Italy - Water way canal

Cathy could only thank what ever power was in the sky above as she began to swim towards the light, her father's journal in hand. She had managed to grab it before it sank to the canal floor.

As she finally broke the surface she gave out an intense gasp for air, oxygen filling to her deprived lungs. She began her short swim to shore, after a few moments she sat on the ledge of the walk way with a sigh.

Fear began to clench her heart as she looked down to the now ruined journal. With a shaky hand she opened it, confirming her fears. It was ruined, pages of well documented notes turned into inky mesh of abstract art.

At that moment everything came crashing down on her, the pain in her shoulder. Remembering her now destroyed apartment. The fact the one thing her father had left behind. His words, his untold stories, his long trips gone from home, ruined.

Cathy began to breathe out rapidly, as a burning sensation began to build behind her eyes. She was feeling something she hasn't felt in a long time. Indescribable rage, with her vision getting blurry she quickly made her way away from the water.

After taking a moment to collect herself, she began to walk along the many path ways of Venice. Only coming to a stop the made Cathy's blood boil. The red haired suit, she was saying something. However Cathy was not having any of it. Super powers or not, she was going to rip her apart. She let out a yell as she began to charge towards the redhead.

She merely smirked as she reached a hand into her jacket. Pulling out a brown amulet with a red gem, the suits smile became feral. "Attack Redcap !" She called out as a bright red light blinded Cathy.

As the blurry vision left Cathy's eyes, she looked up and in that very moment. Her fight turned into flight, as she looked up she quickly turned around. She took a quick step back out of fear as she got a true look at it.

Towering over her was a troll looking creature, its skin a light palish gray. Wearing what looked to be torn and ragged crimson tribal garments. Razor sharp point teeth poking out of its mouth, with a helping of saliva. A small piece of metal covering its eyes, a visor with what appeared to be a red line running horizontally across the eyes. The scariest part of all, was the five razor claws instead of fingers.

She let out a gasp as the Redcap took a swing at her. Ducking under the masses arm she sprinted away, only to look back in horror as five uniformed lines appeared where her form use to be. Rage long forgotten, she began to sprint around a corner back to the canal.

Moving as fast as her legs would allow her, not daring to look back feeling the Redcap's claws nipping at her heels. She saw a man rowing a boat along the water ways. A idean formed in her mind as she jumped of the walk way using the boat as a platform. Jumping off the boat as hard as she could she made it to the ledge at caught her self.

turning around to look at the owner, she let out a quick I'm sorry. Seeing as the man was knocked into the water, turning to look up she saw a giant single eye staring back at her. The red pupil shined for a moment, as a small sound came from the titan. Feeling the green energy before, she quickly jumped over the titan and to a balcony behind it.

Taking a moment to let out a sigh, she couldn't help but feel a little bit of a personal victory. She was getting the hang of this. Before she could relish in her win, a Redcap landed right in front of her. Letting out a nasty roar, turning around she saw the brown haired man from earlier. She took a moment to remember his name was Owen.

"Sorry about this." He stated simply, his voice cold and stern. "I tried to give you an out, but you didn't take it. I'll try to make it quick." After those words, his voice almost sounded saddened. She didn't take much time to think on that. She quickly jumped over the railing, nearly getting beheaded.

Landing on the ground she fell to a knee, looking at her sleeve she gasp in shock seeing a fresh cut running across her shoulder. Thankfully no pain or blood, so she wasn't cut at least. She quickly began to sprint again, what could she do ? She couldn't fight those things, those titans. Until a familiar voice broke her thoughts, we have to take the book to Dante Vale.

Acting on the words Sophie had told her many times today, she quickly began to run down another pathway in order to lose her tail. Only problem is, she had no clue where the man lived. Until she saw a phone booth from the corner of her vision. Changing directions on her heels, she made her way to the booth and slammed the door open.

"Come on, come on, come on, Vale." She told her self out load as she flipped throughout the pages quickly. Finally making it to the V section of the book she couldn't help but feel a voice in the back of her head screaming to check her surroundings.

Trusting her inner voice she turned her head to the side as she looked out and let a groan escape her lips. Standing down at the end of the pathway was Owen, and the blonde man that went through her apartment window. Next to them was a Redcap and the red eye titan from earlier.

Getting a good look at it, it was a tall insect that almost appeared to be grass hopper like. Slender and agile like in appearance. Its body having armor like joints, two antenna protruding from its shoulders. "Mind drone !" The blonde man shouted as its singular eye began to shine.

Not liking where this was going, she immediately bolted from the booth. A moment later Mind drone's eye shot out a bright orange beam through the booth, making a forceful explosion knock Cathy to the ground roughly.

As the smell of ash and the heat from the flames over took her senses, she could only let out a cry of pain as she picked herself half way off the ground. Turning her head she looked on as the two suits and titans march through the smoke.

Venice, Italy- Rooftops

Sophie looked out towards an explosion that happened out in the distance, a look of worry expressed on her face. Taking a few steps forward a pit of worry began to build up in her stomach. At the very least she hoped it wasn't Cathy in trouble, however she wasn't that foolish for wishful thinking.

"Whatcha looking at ?" A deep voice whispered into her ear. A jolt of shock and surprise ran down her spine as she jumped forward, creating some distance between her and the stranger that somehow got the drop on her.

Spinning on her heels she looked at the man, appearing to look the same age range as her. Having to look up towards the man's gaze, she saw the organization sunglasses on his face, however his uniform didn't match the run of the mill suit. A black button up silk vest, sleeves rolled up to his forearms, and his tie loosened slightly. His hands placed firmly in his pockets, styled shaggy blonde hair.

The thing that Sophie took most from the man's appearance was his haunting grin, looking as if a lion came across a wounded pray. "Hello, problem girl." He stated playfully.
