Hello! This is the first time dipping my toe into this fandom. Admittedly, I have only watched the show throughout clips on TikTok, but between those, and reading fanfictions, I really enjoyed having a gay romance on tv, especially between Evan "Buck" Buckley and Tommy Kinard. I didn't like how the show recently broke them up and had them both have a big relationship with Abby. So this is kinda my fix it fic.
With how supportive Tommy is of Buck, and how open they seemed to have conversation, I wouldn't believe that Buck wold be focusing on himself. He wants to be a good boyfriend and I think he could tell if something was bothering Tommy. Anyways, long story short I'm calling this work, Be Still based on the Kelly Clarkson song.
This is going to take place shortly after Buck recovers from the curse of Billy Boils.
Tommy Kinard couldn't believe where his life had taken him these last six months. Who would have thought answering a call from his old friend Howie, he would end up meeting a new friend and a boyfriend out of it while he had helped save Captain Nash and his wife were in trouble and as soon as Howie said him and Henrietta needed help, it didn't matter.
Tommy shook himself out of his reverie because his boyfriend had let out a loud snore. Tommy chuckled slightly; Evan had a long shift the previous night and Tommy had started his 48 hours off a little before Evan came by the house. Tommy found himself running a hand through his boyfriend's mussed curls. Even though Tommy was the happiest he has ever been in a relationship, it had never gotten this far. He had tried to date girls in high school to keep up the macho image his father wanted, but he knew that he just wasn't attracted to the opposite sex. And working at the 118 when he was closeted, he had to hide who he was, because of the terror of who the captain was at the time.
Now here was Evan, who went all in after their failed first date, inviting him to his sisters wedding; coming out to the closest people in his life. Tommy was ecstatic, and felt so honored to be apart of that journey, but he was starting to feel scared. He had dated other guys freshly out of the closet. They would stick around for a while, or go back to hiding or find someone better. Tommy couldn't help but feeling like the other shoe was about to drop; that Evan was tired of sedate, calm older Tommy.
"You're thinking too loud," Evan's groggy voice once again shocked Tommy out of his deep musings.
"Hey," Tommy said, forcing a smile on his face. He didn't want Evan to worry about this, "Go back to sleep I'm alright," Evan wiped the sleep away from his face and turned to face his boyfriend.
The past couple of days Evan could tell something was off with Tommy. He hadn't been sleeping well when they spent the night at each other's places. His eyes were starting to get bags, and he wasn't as flirtatious as usual. Or holding him as much. Evan was trying his best to let Tommy come to him, because Tommy always was patient with him. He had unlocked a part of himself with that kiss in his loft after that horrid basketball game when he had maimed his best friend. Buck propped his head up, and then looked at him.
Evan was good at being a boyfriend. He could usually tell when he was annoying his girlfriends in the past, especially if he went on deep dives on the internet, or him being a firefighter was hard on a relationship. Evan thought that they had pretty open conversations, but he was realizing especially after he fixated on the curse of Billy Boils, he hadn't checked in with Tommy in a while. He reached his other hand out and Tommy at least met him halfway and interlocked their fingers together.
"Tommy," Evan started nervously, and then started again as he looked into his blue eyes.
"Evan," he teased lightly back, but Evan wasn't having it.
"What's going on?" he asked kindly, trying to keep any accusatory tone out of his voice.
"I already said I was ok bab-," Tommy said weakly.
"I know you did," he said, squeezing his hand. "But I wanted to check in with you," he said, hoping it wasn't sounding dumb. Tommy raised an eyebrow up at him, but could start to feel nerves coming to the surface. Clearly he wasn't doing a good enough job hiding some of his insecurities. "You haven't been sleeping much," he said, "And I know I have been more annoying-,"
"You aren't annoying Evan," Tommy whispered back, even though he was afraid of Evan leaving him, he still didn't want him talking bad about himself.
"Doing deep dives on things, and getting really obsessed with the Curse," Evan said, shaking his head at his silliness. "I just haven't really seen how you are doing," he said feeling a little guilty, "you even dressed up and told him to take the curse away," Tommy chuckled, but felt nervousness rising ni his chest. "Sorry keep talking about me," He squeezed Tommy's hand again. Tommy was still being patient with him, "I am worried about you baby," he admitted, "and I think it's my fault," he said rubbing his thumb over Tommy's knuckles. Before Tommy could interrupt Evan kept on, "so I want to change that. This relationship isn't a one way street, it goes both ways and I haven't tried harder to see how you were. So please let me help you like you have helped me. I'm all ears,"
Tommy's mouth went dry, and he could feel tears enter his eyes. He wanted to lie to him to protect him once again, but Evan was really trying to make sure he was ok, he wasn't like his past relationships. Tommy cleared his throat, and decided to lay it out for him, "I...I have been feeling a little scared lately," he said thickly.
Evan scooted closer to him, but didn't want to crowd him, just hoped he was being a calming prescience for him. "What about?" he asked gently.
"This is the longest I have ever been in a relationship," Evan bit his tongue to keep himself from trying to fix it and let Tommy go at his pace, "And every other guy before you left when things got too comfortable. Or that I am not the guy that gets married, just the one to get younger gays experiments. And I'm not saying I think you're like that..." tears were coming down from his cheeks, and Evan wiped them away with his free hand, and felt Tommy lean into his palm.
"Tommy..." Evan felt his heart hurt. This is what Evan always felt in his past relationships, not being good enough, "I am so sorry," Tommy looked at him, his eyes starting to get bloodshot from the tears.
"For what?" he asked his face forming into a frown.
"For mot making sure you know you can talk with me too about anything," Evan said to him, "I want to know the bad things too. I want to be able to help you through it, so we can become even stronger," Tommy started to cry more, and was almost hating himself like he used to, not showing off how macho he was.
"I am sorry Evan," he said his voice cracking, "I didn't mean to hide or push you away,"
"Well we are talking now," Evan said kindly. Evan wanted to be with this man every day no matter what, but he didn't want to "buck it up" and say the wrong thing. "Tommy I am not going to go anywhere ok?" he whispered as he unlaced his fingers from Tommy's to grab his wrist and pull him close, just like so many times that Tommy had done for him, "I am not those guys, and I may have only discovered that I was bisexual when you kissed me, but I am so happy where I am now. You have made me a better man Tommy," he said, as Tommy put his face against Evan's bare chest as he let out the sobs and insecurities he had been holding in. Evan wrapped his arms around him tightly, and one hand went through his hair. "I can't believe I am lucky enough to be with a strong man like you," he murmured. He decided to let his words sit with Tommy for a bit, as he cried so he could just let it all out.
After some time had passed Tommy lifted his head up to wipe his face, before looking at Evan. "I love you," he told him, and Evan's face broke into the biggest smile he had ever seen from him.
"You love me?" Evan asked, happiness shining in his voice. Before he could let Tommy think about it anymore, he leaned his face in and kissed Tommy on the lips hoping all his love and emotions were poured into it. He felt Tommy respond, and after a moment he pulled away. "I love you too Tommy," Tommy finally smiled his crinkly nosed smile that Evan loved so much at him. "Are you ok now?" he asked softly.
"Thank you Evan...so much," he said.
"And I will keep telling you I'm not going anywhere unless it's by force until you get it," Tommy was about to answer, but was interrupted by a yawn. "It's ok I got you," he promised, and Tommy laid his head down back on his boyfriend's chest, arms around his waist, and felt Evan's hand go from his hair to his nails scratching lightly up and down his back. Tommy's breathing starting to even without the sobs, and felt his breathing deepen. Evan smiled down at his boyfriend, glad that he followed his instincts to get out what was really bothering Tommy. Evan glanced at his alarm clock, it was two in the morning. Evan decided right then and there he was going to wake up before Tommy and make him a special breakfast and they were going to watch his favorite movie.
With a smile and plan in place he closed his eyes and let sleep take him.
Thankfully he had woken up around seven and saw that Tommy had moved around in his sleep a little but still had an arm over Evan's stomach. Evan gently moved his boyfriend's beefy arm off of him and as quietly as he could got out of bed, grabbed a hoodie and put it on. Tommy's scent instantly hit his nose and he smiled. Come on Buckley, head in the game he thought to himself. Tommy loved whenever he had made pancakes from scratch so that was the plan. He even had some fruit compote made to put on top, and had bought bacon and hashbrowns. He loved using Tommy's kitchen, was so big and spacious. Before he got going, he made sure he had his phone and a headphone in, and started to cook.
The previous night and the lack of sleep must have taken Tommy out, because normally he would wake up to the smell of food, and Evan moving around in the kitchen. Coffee was going and Evan hummed to himself as he kept cooking; he was listening to a podcast bees; was his latest deep dive since the Beenado happened.
Upstairs Tommy was finally starting to stir, the wonderful aroma of breakfast foods wafting into the room. He had blearily opened his eyes to see what time it was; he hadn't slept past six am since his army days and it was now 8 am. Tommy couldn't believe what happened last night, but he was so grateful he was honest with him. He got out of bed, and put on a tank top before going to the bathroom. The sleep he had gotten was more than the had gotten in a week, and was glad to see the bags in his eyes were nowhere near as apparet. His eyes were still a little rimme with red, but all in all he was feeling better.
He exited the bathroom to see Evan had put a full spread on his counter full of breakfast foods, and had lit a candle on the table. No boyfriend ever put this much effort in and he felt himself grin as he walked into the kitchen. Evan jumped as he hadn't seen him there initially, and he took out his ear bud and grinned at Tommy. "Good morning babe," he said, " I was hoping I had more time to surprise you-,"
Before he could get any more words out Tommy walked over to him took his chin lightly and kissed him. "I'm guessing you like the surprise," he murmured against his lip, as he put down the torch lighter on the table so he could properly kiss his boyfriend back.
"I do," he breathed as he pulled away. "How can I help?" he asked.
"You can take a seat at the table," Evan said sweetly.
"Evan..."
"Hey you said you would let me take care of you," Evan reminded him in a teasing tone. "Now go sit," he said turning his boyfriend around before playfully swatting him on the butt. Tommy let out a laugh, and acquiesced to his boyfriend's request and sat down. Evan had moved to the coffee pot and grabbed Tommy's favorite mug before pouring coffee in with a splash of milk before putting it in front of him and kissing him on the lips. "For once I am going to spoil you," he said pulling away. He loaded a plate with a couple of pancakes, a cup full of heated maple syrup, bacon and hashbrowns in front of Tommy before making a plate for himself and sitting right next to him.
Tommy looked at his boyfriend fondly and put a hand on his thigh as he took sips of his coffee and enjoyed the spread Evan had put out for them. Soon they were full of food.
"And after this," Evan said, the gears going in his head, "I'm going to get you in the shower so I can clean up and we can put on Love Actually,"
"I love everything about this plan, but I just want to change one thing," he said with a smile.
"Oh?" Evan asked, wondering what part of take care of Tommy Plan wasn't working out.
"You come join the shower with me," a devious smile appearing on his face.
And after seeing that who was Evan to deny him?
