Note: This is my first Supergirl story. I MISS Maggie and Alex together but I Love Alex as a mom too. So I took the best of both parts of the series and created a slightly AU story where Alex is still the director of the DEO. She is a single mom for Esme and Maggie has returned to National city and is now a DEO agent.
Alex lay unconscious in the DEO infirmary, her face pale and damp with sweat. The alien virus was ravaging her body, heightening her heart rate, and leaving her trapped in a vivid cycle of past traumas—each nightmare echoing into the room as gasps, whimpers, and shouts. Beside her bed, the monitors beeped anxiously. John, Eliza, and Kara watched over her helplessly, their eyes heavy with worry.
Maggie entered quietly, her gaze fixed on Alex's trembling form. She moved closer, concern etched on her face as she asked, "How is she?"
"Not good," John replied, his tone somber. "Her body is under a lot of pressure, and we don't know how to calm her mind. Nothing seems to work."
Alex stirred, crying out, "No, Maggie… no…" Her voice was raw, cracked with fear. Maggie flinched at the sound, and a flash of pain crossed her face. She turned to John and Eliza. "Do you mind if I try something?"
Eliza glanced at John, then gave Maggie a quick nod. John stepped back, silently granting his permission. Maggie approached the bed and lowered herself beside Alex, taking her hand gently in her own. She brushed a stray lock of Alex's hair back, her touch feather-light.
"Hey, baby, I need you to hold on," Maggie whispered, her voice barely above a murmur, but filled with a quiet determination. She continued stroking Alex's hair, each pass slow and calming. "Remember all those firsts we talked about?"
Eliza's eyes darted to the monitor. "Whatever you're doing, Maggie, keep going," she said, her voice laced with a mixture of relief and amazement. Alex's erratic heart rate was beginning to settle.
Maggie squeezed Alex's hand a little tighter. "Remember when you told me about coming out to your mom?" She smiled, keeping her voice even, trying to ignore Eliza's gaze on her. "Do you remember how she took it?"
Alex's brows furrowed, her lips parting slightly as she mumbled, "Better than me." She shifted, seeming to relax as Maggie's words found their way through the nightmares.
Maggie chuckled softly, a tear slipping down her cheek before she could catch it. "That's right, baby. And you've still got one more person to come out to." Her voice softened further. "You're not done yet."
A slight smile tugged at Alex's lips, and she muttered, "Esme."
Maggie nodded, her thumb tracing soothing circles on the back of Alex's hand. "She's safe, love. She's okay. You just need to hold on for her."
"Hmmm…" Alex murmured, her breathing growing steadier. Maggie glanced back at John and Eliza, whose faces showed a glimmer of hope.
"You're doing great, Maggie," John encouraged quietly, his voice a steadying anchor in the room's tense atmosphere.
Maggie returned her focus to Alex, feeling Alex's fingers twitch, then squeeze her hand. A thrill of relief and tenderness coursed through her. She leaned a little closer, her voice barely above a whisper. "Baby, can you hear me?"
In her sleep, Alex's face softened, and she mumbled, "Marry me…"
The room fell silent. Kara, Eliza, and John exchanged wide-eyed glances, surprise and amusement flickering in their expressions.
Maggie, cheeks flushed, gave a small, nervous laugh. "She's dreaming," she said, trying to brush off the moment. But as she turned back to Alex, her heart beat just a bit faster.
"Marry me, please…" Alex repeated, her voice softer now, but insistent.
Maggie gently rubbed her thumb along Alex's knuckles, her own feelings a mix of love, guilt, and longing that twisted deep inside her. "Let's talk about that later, yeah?" she murmured, feeling the weight of the unspoken emotions between them.
John gave Maggie a knowing look, and Eliza, encouraged by Alex's stability, squared her shoulders. "I'll go work on an antidote in the lab," she said, her voice filled with renewed determination.
Maggie stayed by Alex's side, letting the silence settle around them. Though she and Alex had both agreed to remain friends, Maggie knew they were fooling no one. Since her return to National City, the two had fallen into an easy closeness, shared moments at family gatherings, long game nights with Kara—moments that sometimes ended with hands clasped together, whispers exchanged just beneath the surface. As Alex's steady breaths filled the room, Maggie felt the truth lingering between them, as undeniable as the heartbeat under her hand.
