Only in the stillness of night, when the doctors had run both his brother and father, as well as Angel out of the room did Rin have a moment to collect his thoughts freely.

"Metatron? What now?" Rin asked softly, emotional and physical exhaustion bleeding through. Metatron walked up to Rin who looked ready to fall asleep from the emotionally draining day.

"You did good today, Rin. I know this hasn't been easy for you," Metatron comforted.

Rin let out a small and tired sigh. Everything seemed to weigh down on him. Or maybe it always had, and he just didn't have the strength to carry it on his own anymore.

"Thanks."

Metatron sat next to his "ward". His face twisted to try and be comforting but couldn't hide the worry that shimmered in his eyes. Things would be different now. Change was inevitable, but this was something that would have been easier had Rin been a fully realized adult instead. With a freedom of his own wellbeing and able to remove an issue if need be. As a legal child, that made it far more difficult if things took a turn for the worst. But that made what Metatron did even more important. Being his guardian angel to help him in this chaos. From the day he had asked to protect Rin, until Rin's dying breath, he would protect him. He was Rin's guardian angel. And there was no one would change that.

"You think Dad will fight Angel?" Rin asked abruptly, "Like, punch him in the face or something?"

The comment came so suddenly Metatron had no choice but to release a full bellied laugh. His wings shook with the laughter as he worked to compose himself.

"Oh Rin, that is certainly a possibility."

And wouldn't that be entertaining? As much as human violence towards one another was abhorrent, he could take some level of amusement from a brawl between Rin's father and Rin's forced "mentor".

"I think dad could take him. He's the paladin after all," Rin continued, latching onto the little distraction of entertainment from his two very separate lives colliding in what he feared would be a violent cascade of chaos. Metatron lightly tapped Rin on his forehead. Something that could be very loosely likened to a slap at Rin's suggestion.

"Rin, don't encourage fate."

"Why? They're not in here. They can't hear me," Rin slightly slurred. Clearly still exhausted from surviving the attack at the training. That and the compromised identity issue. That was no doubt taxing on his mind even as he tried not to think too deeply into it.

"Sure. But now they might get it in their heads."

"Dad would still win."

"Of course he would Rin. Of course he would."

-.-

Shiro was so close to punching Angel in his holier than though looking face. How dare this upstart make accusations that he didn't care for Rin. Because he had missed a life Rin had been actively hiding from him while he was trying to protect him and teach Yukio how to be an exorcist? He was a busy man and a father. He was human- he was mortal man damn it!

Angel held no sympathy for him either. How could a man with such high standing not know he had such a blessed budding exorcist living under his roof? Too focused on his other ward no doubt as he had become infamous with his quick acceleration into becoming an exorcist. And as far as Angel was concerned, just a slightly above average exorcist at that. His only advantage was being trained far earlier than others. Not like his own star pupil.

Yukio...

Yukio felt electricity jolt under his skin. Everything felt wrong. No matter how he tried to piece everything together, it just didn't make sense. Not in a way he felt good about. Not in a way he could feel justified in not realizing that his brother- who he worked so hard to protect- had known everything. Had kept what must have been pain and fear a secret for years and had no one to rely on. That he didn't even trust Yukio with what he saw. He did his best to ignore the clawing at his heart that he had done the exact same thing with his own secrets. For the same reason no less.

And yet, Rin was still joking. He was still relaxed, rolling through the punches while Yukio felt the urge to lash out. To get rid of what had pulled Rin into the world he had worked so hard to keep him from.

He might not have known the demon, but Angel clearly had pulled him into the order.

He wanted nothing more than to punch Angel in his smug face. But that would only cause problems. What if the order decided that Rin would stay away from them and remain under Angel because Shiro didn't bring him to the order as a Blessed being. What did that even mean? He and his brother were the sons of Satan. His brother had been found swaddled in the blue flames of their biological father. That was the only difference between him and his brother. And he doubted they knew about the flames when his brother's demon blood was still sealed, hidden away back in their home.

He hated not having answers. More than anything.

"Keep moving. You three are to let the patient rest," an older exorcist doctor commented as he continued to urge the three to move away from the medical ward. Tension was thick between two of the most powerful exorcists and the remarkable quick learned exorcist. The last thing any of the medical staff needed was a fight to break out around the their patients.

"Of course. We wouldn't want to disturb my student while he's healing," Angel spoke in a cocky tone. The fine thin thread holding Yukio back snapped as his arm attempted to punch Angel in his face.
