Layer 5: Wahnsinn

Existentialism is usually something Lana wasn't thinking about. She didn't even really knew what this word meant. She had heard it from Lisa one day and now while digging here with Lucy down towards hell she couldn't stop thinking about it.

"Lucy, is all of this real?"

"Or is this just fantasy?", quoted Lucy a famous song. "Well, yes I am sure most of this is real."

"If hell and all the demons are real, why don't they try to attack earth?"

"Demons can't leave hell so easily," explained Lucy. "They are imprisoned there and getting into our realm is a difficult effort and even if they manage to do it they are only ghosts when they arrive in our plane of reality. Then they have to slowly gather power to influence anything or anyone. Possessing people is especially challenging for a demon, even the especially powerful demons."

"Why do demons possess people anyway?" asked Lana.

Lucy looked into the sky. "They want to get closer to heaven. Closer to the pearly gates, closer to paradise, closer to the angels and closer to god so they can finally kill him and conquer heaven."

Lana looked into the sky as well, her expression skeptical. "Sounds like they need to possess an angel but would that even be possible to do?"

"Demons are determined beings," told Lucy in a gloom tone. "They don't give up so easily. Especially demons of Pride. They are more determined than even the demons of Greed."

"What is so powerful about pride, why is it seemingly so strong?" asked Lana.

"Pride makes you confident, makes you bold, makes you act, makes you fearless, makes you feel mighty, make you feel invincible and makes you blind to your own weaknesses."

"The last two sound bad," figured Lana quickly. "Yet, Pride can also lead to victory?"

"If they are lucky or if they actually can back up what they are pride off. Few people can do this and these individuals are especially powerful and competent."

"And luck?"

"Yes, luck is always a factor Lana, not just with pride but with everything."

"Do you think a demon of pride will one day get so lucky and so good they will succeed at their mission to kill god?"

Lucy looked up to the heavens. "Unlikely. But should that happen, it would be the worst case scenario for the totality of existence. Now continue digging, Lana. Hell will not reign in heaven today."

Lola Loud felt unsure.
Lola Loud felt nervous.
Lola Loud felt fear.
Lola Loud felt watched.

Lola felt observed.

She was in her room, working on her make-up for a few minutes by now. It was like always but Lola could swear that something was different today. That something was fundamental wrong in this room.

"Lana is nowhere to be seen and her animals are rather quiet. Unusual. They usually make at least some noises, loud noises. Is Lana planning something?"

Lola stood up and walked over to Lana's half of the room. She looked around for her sister or somebody else. She looked under Lana's bed, she looked after somebody under her own bed, she looked in her closet for a person and the closet of Lana, she looked into her backpack and the backpack of Lana, just in case.

Nothing.
Lola found nothing.
"But there is something or someone watching me!"

The Princess went through the entire room once more. She was sure she had overseen something, she was sure someone was watching her right now.

"Where is the camera?"

Lola looked into the four ceiling corners of the walls, looking for a camera. She looked as close as possible, suspecting to see very small cameras. She used objects from her room throwing them into the corners, hoping for any kind of reaction a very small or invisible camera would make.

But none came.

"What is going on? Are these cameras… What did called Lisa it again? Out-of-phase? Come into phase, cameras!"

Lola climbed up the wall via piling books onto another, large enough she could stand on up to the upper corner. Up there she felt around, looking for some hint, the tiniest clue for something unnatural. Lola felt around but found nothing, she rubbed the walls, ceiling and corner but found or felt nothing, the princess, punched and kicked but she hit nothing this time as well.

Nothing.
But her thoughts told her that the cameras were just very well hidden.

"Maybe… Maybe IN the walls!"

Lola went over where Lana stashed her tools and took out a hammer of her twins toolbox. She didn't hesitate for long before hammering into a wall she felt was suspicious. Cracks appeared quickly, followed by debris falling from the spot on the wall Lola was hammering into and finally the wall gave in and a hole was created.

"Where are you, camera? Where are you?"
Lola looked inside the hole, looked around the room again, took a torch to see more but still found nothing. She reached inside the hole and touched around for anything that could feel like a camera.

"Where is it? How small can you really be?! SHOW YOURSELF! You will not spy on me any longer!"

Lola began to hammer more holes into the walls. She hammered like a maniac, hoping, begging internally she would find something, ANYTHING!

"Where are you? WHO ARE YOU, SPIES AND STALKERS?!"

Lola suddenly saw an eye in the wall. As the eye noticed that it was spotted it vanished into thin air. The princess jumped over to the spot and started to attack the spot with her hammer. "I SAW YOU!"

Lola's hammering became even more aggressive at this point, with the wall splintering in all directions. Her eyes were filled with red fire of anger and madness, coming from the most disturbed part of her brain. She growled in anger and screamed like a insane person at the walls.

"SHOW YOU EYES! SHOW YOURSELVES YOU SPIES!"

Lola whirled around wildly, seeing more eyes who vanished the second she spotted them, even if it was only in the corner of her eye. She felt like she was losing all the privacy she ever had and ever would have.

"YOU DON'T GET ANYTHING FROM ME!"

Lola ran around the room, hammering into the walls randomly. Seeing eyes popping up and vanishing everywhere she didn't stop attacking while in full rage-mode. She would do anything to destroy these onlookers, these spies, these devilish beings!

"WHO SEND YOU? WHY DID THEY SEND YOU?!"

Lola climbed up her canopy bed and hammered against the ceiling as well. She put several holes into her ceilinh and put her hands into them, searching for anything that might spy on her.

"Who are you? You are in here, right? The ceiling is of better use for spying than the walls. Get out of my ceiling! GET OUT!"

These words were followed by more intense and aggressive hammering. "GET OUUUUUUUUUUT!"

More and more debris was falling from the ceiling down to the ground thanks to Lola's rapid hammering.

"Come out of your hiding place, your dirty, dark, depth of deception!"

Lola climbed into the large hole in the ceiling she just created. She looked around with a wild and crazy expression on her face. She hammered into the darkness, in the hope to hit anything. She could swear she saw eyes blinking in the darkness.

"Looking at me in the darkness? I WILL OBSCURE YOUR EYES WITH MY HAMMER!"

She struck with her hammer into the dark. She struck hard. She struck without mercy. Yet she wasn't hitting anything.

"I think Lola is unwell," said Lana all of the sudden.

"Why do you think so, Lana?" asked Lucy, not interrupting her digging.

"I feel something is off and it also feels to me like Lola is suffering. I am not sure why I know this."

"Twin-Telepathy," answered Lucy a question in advance.

"What is this?" asked Lana. "You mean telepathy between twins?"

"Something only blood related twins can do with each other," explained Lucy. "It doesn't happen always happen with twins though or blood related people for that matter."

"I can read Lola's mind then?" realized an astounded Lana. "Can she read my thoughts as well?"

"Of course."

Lana's expression became one similar to a worried dog. "I don't want Lola to read my mind."

"You can also still read her mind," clarified Lucy. "Your sense that Lola is in danger could come from Twin-Telepathy, feeling her distressed feelings and thoughts."

"I go to the house and look after her," Lana decided. "This is getting too bizarre and I don't let Lola be endangered by anything."

Lucy pondered for a Moment if she should stop Lana or not. She wasn't too sure if Lana leaving the ritual/digging site would abort the work they had accomplished so far. In the book Lucy found was no information about what would happen if somebody left and return later to proceed with the ritual as planned.

"Go," Lucy finally said. "I can't stop you from checking on Lola if you really think she is in danger."

Lana ran as fast as possible towards the front door. She swung the entrance open and gasped in horror. She saw only rotten corpses, a derelict interior, little demonic rats running around, sinister shadows everywhere, the air smelled like rotten meat, the air tasted like dead grass and she could barely see the living room but as she bent forwards to see more she thought she saw-

Lucy pulled Lana back and slammed the door shut. After a few seconds Lucy carefully opened the door again, keeping Lana behind her. The inside of the house has returned to normal.

"We are safe," deducted Lucy. "For now."

Lana was very anxious, anxious on a level she had never been before in her live. "What was that?"

"What you think hell could look like," explained Lucy. "One of the possible appearances of hell is the corruption and destruction of your home. You saw our home in a way you never wanted it to see."

"You can say that out loud," Lana joked but the tone of her voice revealed her fear. "I mean…. Nothing scary happened during this dig so far, why now?"

"Hell hasn't a known standardized plan they follow to attack their victims. They are sneaky and subversive," explained Lucy. "Hell, and its masters scare you in many ways. Sometimes they jump into your face, sometimes they put a horror into your way, so gigantic it is impossible to dodge, another time they use something invisible that stalks you, in certain instances they use gaslighting, other times they surprise you with horrific news, another tactic is to force you to relive the worst moment of your live on repeat, other times they send you into a labyrinth with no apparent exit, sometimes you sit in total darkness for an unknown amount of time, other times you are just alone, other times there are too many, other times you are not sure what the people want from you and sometimes they just torture you with unimaginable pain. But the last one that revolves around standard torture only happens when they feel uncreative."

Lana looked even more fearful than before. These stories gave her the fright she probably should having from the beginning of this operation. But she didn't do this to test her courage, she did this to liberate Charles from the horrors of hell. He probably was going through all of this while being imprisoned here and probably even more gruesome stuff.

"Let us work faster now," requested Lana. "The sooner we are finished here the sooner we can leave."

And so, the sisters continued their dangerous travel down to hell.
