The next morning, the engines were surprised to see Belle puff up to Tidmouth Sheds blowing her whistle and ringing her bell brightly. Thomas and Percy beamed.
"Good morning, Belle," whistled Thomas.
"Good morning to you all."
"What are you doing here?" Percy asked.
"The Rescue Centre Manager sent me to learn the Line. I must know where everything is in case there is an emergency."
"Are you having any trouble?" asked Edward.
"Well, I do need to collect more coal."
"So do we," said Thomas. "We'll show you the way."
Belle smiled. "Thank you, Thomas."
Thomas, Percy and Belle made their way to the Shunting Yards. As they took on coal and water, Diesel oiled alongside them. Belle rang her bell cheerfully. "Hullo, who are you?"
Diesel smiled. "I'm Diesel and you must be Belle. I saw you at the Steamworks."
"Yes, Thomas, Percy and I were being cleaned and checked over after a fire and the workmen did very well. The Steamworks is so grand, but I didn't see you or any other diesels around. Are you the only one or do the diesels have their own place to be fixed?"
Diesel was surprised; no one had ever asked him that. "We have the Dieselworks, but it's not grand like the Steamworks at all."
"I'd like to visit. As a member of the Rescue Team, I must know every track on the island."
"That would be nice," replied Diesel. "Last night, I told a friend at the Dieselworks about you, and he would like you to visit. He wanted me to tell you that and engine like you would be a very special visitor there."
Belle blushed again. "Thank you, Diesel."
Just then, the Yard Master came up. "Diesel, your trucks are waiting for you." Diesel snorted and slid swiftly away.
"What's the Dieselworks like, Thomas?" Belle asked.
Thomas thought. "The Dieselworks is close to a big Scrapyard on the far side of the island, but I've never been there myself. It used to be where only visiting diesels from the Mainland would go for rest and repairs, but now, the Fat Controller runs it. Before that, all Sodor engines were mended where the Steamworks is now. 'Arry and Bert were the last diesels to be repaired there."
"My," grinned Belle, "how interesting."
Thomas and Percy set off for work and Belle continued her journey around Sodor. That afternoon, Belle arrived at Brendam Docks. Cranky was surprised. "Who are you?"
"I'm Belle. I'm a firefighting engine, but I can also rescue other engines when they're in trouble."
Cranky was impressed. "I'm Cranky. Anything that needs lifting, just ask."
"Thank you, Cranky."
The Dock Manager appeared. "Belle, I have received a call from the Rescue Center. Some supplies have arrived at the other end of the Main Line, and they want you to collect it for them."
Belle wasn't sure. "But I'm supposed to be learning the Line."
"You can learn the Main Line as you go," the Dock Master replied. "Also, can you take some engine parts to the Dieselworks on your way? James was supposed to collect them, but he's been delayed."
"Of course, I can," said Belle, but then, she had a thought. "Where is the Dieselworks?"
"Go past the Steamworks and carry on down the Main Line. You'll know which way to go when you reach the next junction."
Belle wasn't sure what the Dock Master meant, but she was determined to do a good job. "Right away, Sir."
Belle collected the engine parts and steamed back to the Main Line. She went past the Steamworks, through a long tunnel beyond and it wasn't long before she came to a junction. To the left of it was a sign. It looked old and worn, but on the bottom, it read 'Dieselworks.' "This must be it," Belle said to herself, and she steamed up the left track.
Belle puffed along and passed through another tunnel. On the other side was a wide-open area; it looked like a quarry. Then, she saw the Dieselworks. Wheel-turn by wheel-turn, she puffed into the Yard.
"Oh my," she puffed quietly. The buildings were old, dark, and dirty. It was nothing like the Steamworks.
Suddenly, Belle heard a growling sound…and a shape slid out of the shadows. Belle gasped; it was a diesel engine. It was big and strong, its paint was dirty and scratched…and it had a crushing, crunching claw. "Hullo," said the diesel. "You must be Belle. Diesel said you might come to visit. What an honour."
Belle was nervous. She had never seen an engine like this before. "Hullo," she said quietly, "…who are you?"
"They call me 'Diesel 10.' My friend, Diesel's, told be all about you, Belle. You're a very special engine. Why don't you…puff in?"
So, Belle puffed into the Dieselworks and the shadow of Diesel 10, slowly and carefully. The Dieselworks was dark, greasy, and grimy and it was filled with diesels. Some of them stared while others looked surprised.
"Welcome to the Dieselworks, Belle," said Diesel 10 grandly.
Belle looked around. "Hullo, nice to meet all of you."
"I'm afraid the Dieselworks isn't grand and gleaming like the Steamworks, but we are happy to have you here."
"Thank you," said Belle politely.
Then, two more diesels rolled out of the shadows. "'Ullo," said one, "I'm Den; I work here. Uh…well, what I mean to say is-"
"What Den means to say," the other diesel cut in, "is that 'e's the boss and I 'elp him, a lot. I'm Dart."
"Uh, yes. If you're broken, we fix you."
"But you're a steam engine, so we won't fix you." Dart laughed till his sides shook. Some of the other diesels frowned. "That's a joke, ya? I like jokes."
When Belle saw the funny side, she chuckled. "Oh, I see. I like jokes too."
"Oh?" said Diesel 10. "Tell us more about yourself, Belle."
Belle thought for a moment. "Well, I've just arrived on Sodor. I'm the newest member of the Search and Rescue Team. I can help when there is an accident, and I use my watercannons to fight fires."
"That's a very important job, Belle. Very important, indeed."
Then, Belle remembered. "Oh, I almost forgot. I was asked to bring these new engine parts from Brendam Docks."
"Thank you," said Den.
"Norman, can you move those trucks to the sidings for us?" asked Dart.
"No problem, Dart," a red diesel replied.
Then, Mavis rolled in shunted by Salty. Mavis was surprised. "Oh, you must be Belle. Percy told me about you. I'm Mavis."
"What's wrong, Mavis?" Den asked.
Mavis sighed. "My rods are rattling. It started when made a delivery to the Docks. Salty said he was coming here for an inspection, and he gave me a lift."
"Don't worry, Mavis," said Dart. "Den and I will 'ave you fixed in no time."
"Aye," chuckled Salty. "Den fixes all of us diesels with a whisk of his wheels, me hearty, even though his tools are old, and the sheds are shoddy."
Belle looked around again. "What happened to this place?"
"The Dieselworks used to be used by only visiting diesels," Diesel 10 explained, "but it's never been looked after very well."
"But I thought the Fat Controller runs the Dieselworks now," Belle continued. "Have you told him what it's like around here?"
"We have, but the Fat Controller doesn't listen to us."
"No, Diesel 10," Den protested. "Uh, well…what I mean is-"
"What 'e means is that's not true," finished Dart. "We told the Fat Controller and 'e said the Dieselworks would be repaired."
"And has anything been done?!" Diesel 10 growled. "The sheds are still worn, your equipment is still weary and now, one of your cranes is out of order!"
Dart looked up at the crane above the turntable and sighed. "We 'ave never seen 'Appy 'Ook in such a state."
Belle felt sorry for the diesels; she wanted to help. "Well, I have to collect some supplies for the Rescue Centre now, but I'll ask the Fat Controller about the Dieselworks when I have the chance."
Diesel 10 snapped a smile. "Thank you, Belle. That's very kind of you."
Belle puffed onto the turntable to face the right way again. "Oh, I think my friend, Flynn, may be arriving soon," she said. "He's a fire engine and I think you would like him too."
Diesel 10's eyes flashed. "Come back soon, Belle. We'll be waiting."
As Belle puffed out of the shed, a little green diesel rolled alongside. "Hullo, Belle. My name's Paxton. My friends, Norman and Sidney, and I are new here too.
"Nice to meet you," Belle smiled.
"I have to make a delivery myself. Shall I show you the way out?"
"Thank you, Paxton." And the two engines rolled away together.
In the Main Shed, Diesel 10 watched until Belle was out of sight and his smile grew bigger. "Diesel," he called quietly, "you know what to do." Diesel chuckled deviously and made his way out of the Shed.
"Uh, I wouldn't do that," said a voice.
"Yeah, that Diesel 10 is trouble," said another. "I wouldn't listen to him."
"Neither would I."
Diesel looked to the engine berths and saw two visiting diesels resting. They both had grey paint, but one had purple fittings while the other had yellow ones, and they were dirty and scratched as well.
Diesel frowned. "Mind your own business, you slimy slugs," he grunted and rolled away after Belle and Paxton. "That Splatter and Dodge," he grumbled. "They don't know what they're talking about."
The two diesels looked on as Diesel oiled away.
"I don't know about this."
"Me neither."
"No."
