The next day, the engines were very busy; everyone had more work to do. On Thomas' Branch Line, while Daisy looked after Thomas' passengers, Paxton handled Percy's trucks. While Henry was pulling the Express, Derek and Edward helped with the goods work on the Main Line. As for Norman and his twin, Dennis, they were kept busy carrying passengers and goods to and from Brendam Docks.

At the Steamworks, not much was happening. With no engines coming or going, Victor and Kevin had little to do. Kevin tried to keep himself busy, but he started to feel bored. As the hours passed, he soon found himself resting with the engines talking, and telling stories.

That evening, the Fat Controller arrived with Edward. "Kevin, I have a job for you," he said. "One of the cranes at the Dieselworks is broken and I want you to help them for a while."

Kevin was surprised. "Me, Sir?"

"Yes, Kevin. Everyone has been helping out during this…um…inconvenience and the Dieselworks Manager asked if you could help him, if you're not too busy, of course."

"Of course, he can help, Sir," said Victor and the Steamworks Manager agreed.

So, Kevin raced out of the Steamworks and rolled onto Edward's flatbed. Then, they rattled and rocked all the way to the Dieselworks.

When they arrived, Diesel 10 and the Manager were waiting for them. Diesel 10 was delighted. "Kevin, welcome. We are honoured; very honoured indeed. We need you. You are our hero." Kevin beamed; he had never been a hero before.

Den and Dart clanked over. "'Ullo," said Den.

"Well, Kevin, let's get you to work," said the Manager.

"Dizzy Diesels," put in Dart, "time to swing that 'ook, Kevin!"

Kevin was unloaded and quickly set to work tidying up. "Very good, Kevin," said Diesel 10. "Very good, indeed."

"And thank you, Edward," said the Manager.

"It was my pleasure, Sir."

"But how is the railway, Edward?" asked Diesel 10. "Is everyone getting on well after that accident?"

"Well, it's not easy, but we're doing our best."

"Let us know if there is anything else we can do to help."

Edward was surprised. "…Thank you, Diesel 10." And he steamed back to Tidmouth Sheds.

When Edward arrived at the Sheds, Henry, Toby, and Emily were waiting for him. "Are you all right, Edward?" asked Emily. "You look bothered."

"Something doesn't seem right about all of this," said Edward thoughtfully. "First, that accident at the Steamworks and now, Diesel 10 has offered to help us."

"That is strange," agreed Henry.

"Well, you did take Kevin to help them," said Toby. "Maybe he was just grateful."

Edward still wasn't sure. "I hope so, Toby."

Late that night, the engines were fast asleep. Suddenly, they woke with a start as they heard a loud sound outside the Sheds.

"Bless my bell!" exclaimed Toby, "what was that?"

"It sounded like a building falling down," said Henry.

Edward looked around. "Well, everything's fine in here. If it was a big emergency, our Drivers and Firemen would be here."

"But what was that noise?" asked Emily.

"Whatever it was, we won't find out until morning. For now, let's get some sleep." The other engines reluctantly agreed.

In the morning, Emily was the first to wake up. Then, she noticed the time. "Bubbling boilers! We're late!" she cried. Emily tried to pump her pistons, but she wouldn't move. She tried to whistle, but she couldn't do that either. "Everyone, wake up!" she called. "Something's wrong!"

The other engines groaned. "What's going on?" Toby asked.

"We're late! We have to get to work!"

"I'm afraid you won't be going anywhere," said a voice. It was the Shed Master.

"What do you mean?" asked Edward.

"Take a look."

The workmen opened the Shed doors…and the engines gasped. Trucks were piled in the turntable well and some of them had fallen to pieces. Arthur stood nearby with the Breakdown Train.

"Oh dear, now we're stuck," moaned Henry.

"So, that's what we heard last night," said Toby.

"But how did this happen?" asked Emily.

Edward was confused too. "This is getting stranger and stranger."

The Fat Controller was cross, but not with the engines. "Whoever or whatever is doing this is causing trouble all over Sodor. We will need every engine to help." And he started making phone calls to every engine shed on the Railway.

At the Dieselworks, the Manager was confused too, but he understood what the Fat Controller meant. "Diesel 10, I'm afraid your scrap deliveries will have to wait. There has been another accident and Sir Topham Hatt needs your help." Diesel 10 beamed. The Manager turned to the Sheds. "Splatter and Dodge, Sir Topham has spoken with your Controller, and he says you can help too."

Inside, the two Mainland diesesl were worried, but they were eager to help.

"Oh yes, Sir."

"Right away Sir."

Inside the Dieselworks, Kevin was having a wonderful time, but old parts were clattering everywhere. "Kevin!" fumed Diesel 10, "we don't have time for silly games. Please, move that rubbish."

"Erm…y-yes, Boss."

That day, all over Sodor, steam engines and diesel engines were working their hardest to keep the Fat Controller's Railway running. With Gordon, James and Henry all out of action, Murdoch was asked to take over the Express while Diesel 10 helped Hank and Hiro with their heavy goods trains, Splatter and Dodge helped 'Arry and Bert with their extra jobs, Donald and Douglas took James and Emily's passengers and Mavis had to take workmen and the rock to and from the Quarry herself. The Fat Controller had also ordered every coach, truck, and brake van to be inspected to prevent any further accidents.

At the Steamworks, Rocky had removed another flatbed from the wreckage when the workmen noticed something. "What is it?" asked Harvey.

"…Oil."

Sure enough, there was a patch of oil on the sleepers where the broken flatbed used to be. "Hmm, that's strange," said Harvey.

"It could be a clue," added Rocky...but no one knew that, not far away...someone had been listening.
