By morning, Rocky and Harvey had finished clearing the mess at the Steamworks and the traverser had been repaired. Inside, the engines' fireboxes had been lit and they were ready to go back to work.
"It will be grand to pull my Express again," declared Gordon.
"I'll be showing off my bright paint in no time," added James.
"And it's back to my Branch Line for me," said Thomas. "I've missed Annie and Clarabel."
Suddenly, the engines heard a loud horn and a blaring siren, and Flynn raced into the Steamworks. "Belle! Good, you're free! I've just heard the Dieselworks is on fire and an engine in trapped inside!"
Belle gasped. "Then, we have no time to lose!"
Flynn was coupled to his special rail trailer, and it was quickly filled with water as were Belle and Flynn's water tanks. Then, they raced out of the Steamworks as fast as they could.
"Go, Belle! Hurry, Flynn!" called the engines together and the two fire engines quickly disappeared.
Together, Belle and Flynn roared and raced to the Dieselworks. The Main Shed flickered with fire. Firemen were already on the scene trying to stop it from spreading. The diesels, Kevin, the workmen and the Manager were in the Yard looking on and they were worried.
"Heaving hooks!" quivered Kevin, "I've never seen a fire before. It's scary!"
As Belle and Flynn got closer, they could hear a voice. "HEEEELLLLP! HEEEELLLLP!"
"'Urry!" cried Den.
"Sidney's stuck on the jack-lift!" called Dart. "'Is new wheels never came!"
"Stay back and stay calm!" called Belle. "We will save him!"
Flynn was ready and raring. "Here I come, Sidney! Firey Flynn to the rescue!"
The fire raged. Everyone watched Belle, Flynn and the Firemen. Water flowed fast and flew into the flames. They hissed and fizzed, flickered and flashed and the smoke whirled and twirled as everyone fought the fire.
At last, Flynn called out. "We're winning!"
Finally, the flames faded; the fire was out. Sidney was saved and so was the Dieselworks.
"Hurray for Flynn! Hurray for Belle! Hurray for the Firemen!" called Kevin and everyone cheered.
"I told you Flynn was fast and fearless," said Belle.
"Thank you! Thank you!" called Den.
"We can't thank you enough for saving our 'ome!" agreed Dart.
"Think nothing of it," said Flynn modestly. "We're just doing our job."
At Knapford Sheds, the engines had seen the situation, Harvey and Rockey arrived to clear the mess, and Splatter and Dodge kept their watch on Diesel 10.
Soon, the Fat Controller arrived; he was cross. "Diesel 10! what do you think you are doing?!"
Diesel 10 went pale; ff there was anyone he couldn't stand up to, it was the Fat Controller. "Er, I…erm-"
"You, Diesel 10, are an engine on my Railway! You will do as I say when I say it! Do you understand?!" Diesel 10 whimpered. "You have caused more confusion and delay than any engine I know. The Dieselworks has been on fire, trucks and deliveries have been bashed and broken and because of you, the other engines have been rushed of their wheels, Diesel has broken down and some engines are not being Really Useful! I will be speaking to the Scrap Manager, and you will put right everything you've damaged!" The Fat Controller paused impressively and turned to the two small diesels. "Splatter and Dodge, I have heard that you have not always done what is right, but last night, you did something very brave in spite of being scared. You stopped Diesel 10 from causing more trouble. I am very proud of you and I'm sure you're Controller will be too when I tell him about this."
Splatter and Dodge smiled; they had never felt happier.
"Thank you, Sir."
"It was our pleasure, Sir."
"You're too kind."
"Emphatically."
"Yeah…What does that mean again?"
"I still don't know."
"Oh well."
The Fat Controller smiled. "It means you are being clear. Now, did you say Diesel was involved in this too?"
The Twins looked at each other.
"Yes, Sir."
"It's true, Sir. Diesel 10 sent him to cause the other accidents."
"That's right."
The Fat Controller sighed. "In that case, I shall talk to him later." He looked back at Diesel 10 for a moment. "Do you also know why he did this?"
"He told us you don't care about us diesels," said Splatter.
"He trapped the steam engines so we would do their work and show you how useful we are," put in Dodge.
"What nonsense," frowned the Fat Controller. "All engines on Sodor are useful as long as they work hard, and I can see that you and the others have done very well in keeping my Railway running."
"Does this mean, er…"
Splatter wasn't sure how to ask his question, so Dodge cut in. "Does this mean the Dieselworks will be fixed too?"
The Fat Controller smiled. "Of course, the Dieselworks will be fixed. We only started using it not that long ago. We have been meaning to make repairs for quite a while, but sometimes, these things take time. Supplies is currently being brought in, but unfortunately, some of it now needs repair and replacing."
Then, Splatter and Dodge understood. "The trucks!" Some of the heavy trucks Diesel had used for his accidents had been filled with supplies for the Dieselworks.
"Indeed, but after that fire, repairs to the Dieselworks are more urgent than ever. After all, we can't have anymore of you breaking down. And you will see, Diesel 10, some things are well worth waiting for." Splatter and Dodge smiled again while Diesel 10 just sulked.
It wasn't long before the engines at Tidmouth Sheds were free as well. As the days passed, steam engines and diesel engines were hard at work repairing the Dieselworks. It was tough, rough work, but each day, they all did their best. Den and Dart rattled and raced so fast and so far, they both felt quite dizzy.
At last, repairs to the Dieselworks were finished; it was grand. The old buildings had been fixed, new buildings had been built, old tools and equipment had been mended or replaced and even Happy Hook was ready for work again.
The Fat Controller smiled from ear to ear. "The new Dieselworks a very special building," he boomed, "not just because it is new and grand, but because it shows what can happen when Really Useful Engines work together. You must all know that none of my engines are ever forgotten. You are all hard working, and I am proud of you all."
"Very well said," called Dowager Hatt.
"Here, here!" agreed Lady Hatt.
The Fat Controller declared the new Dieselworks open. The steam engines whistled, the diesels honked, and everyone cheered.
…But what about Diesel and Diesel 10?
When the Scrap Manager found out what had happened, he was cross too. When Diesel was repaired and Diesel 10 was back on the rails, they were sent to clear the wreckage at Tidmouth Sheds. Then, while 'Arry and Bert helped with repairing the Dieselworks, the two naughty diesels were sent to do their work, shunting old scrap and delivering heavy iron and steel for a whole month with only the silly trucks to talk too and they hated it.
When the new Dieselworks was finished, Diesel and Diesel 10 were sent to their Sheds and were left alone for several days with no one to talk to and from then on, they agreed that it would be best to never cause trouble for the Railway again. Of course, that is what Diesel thought right then. He would be back to his old tricks soon…
…but that's another story.
