Resident Evil: Remnant

Chapter 2

Watts rubbed at his in thought as he reviewed the footage once more of their latest experiment, watching as dozens of the test subjects fell to sustained gunfire as the soldiers on the screen fell back away from the slowly approaching test subjects.

He frowned at that. At the slow rate of speed of the test subjects.

They would have to fix that going forwards.

At least, the damn things could take a hit, he thought with a grimace.

"Doctor Watts?" a voice said from behind him. He turned to find a man with wild-looking silver hair, including his mustache and beard, coming into the room. Doctor Merlot. He nodded stiffly at the man as he said,"How, curious, to see you here."

He looked at the monitor and the video feed on it before looking back at Watts and asked, "Are you enjoying the results of the new batch?"

"Hardly," Watts snorted in disgust and shook his head. He motioned with his hand at the footage as he said, "The test subjects are too slow and fall to a mere burst of weapons fire. Normal weapons fire at that. Against something like a Huntsman, they are less than fodder for them."

"Hm," Merlot returned before shrugging as he took out a tablet and looked it over as he said absently, "Well, no worries there, Doctor. That was the point of the experiment. Now, we can continue to refine the formula with this in mind."

He grinned like a madman as he looked out the room's windows to the larger one beyond as he said, "The world will soon see the wonder that is my creations."

Watts frowned at that as he rebutted with, "Our creations, Merlot."

"But, of course, Watts." The Valean doctor answered with a shrug of his own before going back to his note. Watts did the same in reviewing the footage.

Neither noticed the figure watching them from the doorway. The figure frowned at what they had said before turning and leaving as quickly and quietly as they had arrived.

One week later…

The office of General Ironwood

"And that's the extent of my report, sir." Clover Ebi finished as he stood before the general's desk. The man himself was staring out the window of his office, his hands clasped behind his back. There was a moment of silence before the general asked over his shoulders, "Was there any chance that it might've been a White Fang attack?"

There was a pause before, "No, I don't believe so, sir. There were… humans among the ranks of the enemy. Those that weren't converted into… those things."

"Mm," was all the general in answer to that. He stared out out of the window for a moment more in silence before he then asked, "And, what of the BSAA agents? The ones that survived."

"If they've recovered enough to speak then they're most likely giving their own reports to their superiors, sir. You should be receiving a report from the BSAA soon." Ebi answered.

Ironwood nodded at that. "Very well then," he said as he turned around and sat down at his desk. "That will be all, Specialist."

Clover saluted the general once more before turning and leaving the room. Ironwood watched him go before looking over the complete report once more with a deep frown on his face. He rubbed at his chin in thought as he did so.

Just what was this new threat, he wondered silently. They were like the Grimm, but also not. Had someone, somehow, weaponized the creatures?

He shook his head in confusion. He would have to investigate the matter further it seemed.

Leon S. Kennedy, Senior Federal Agent of the Atlas Council, found himself in a room he rarely had a reason to be in at any time, but he did today.

"We've received word from an anonymous source, that this man, Pietro Polendina, wishes to defect from the group he was formerly a part of." Councilman Sleet announced as he motioned to the screen next to him as it showed an older, balding man. "He states that any attempt on his own could very well end in his death and so he asks that we send in someone to help extract him. He states that if we get him out he promises to tell us all he knows about the group he's a part of, and what they're doing."

The older man paused, mid-debrief, as he noted the agent's lack of attention and frowned as he asked, "Agent Kennedy?"

Leon remained silent for a moment before asking, "Isn't this one of the two men that were supposed to be extracted by the military and the BSAA on that disaster a week ago?"

Sleet jerked back at that before leaning forwards as he asked, "And, how do you know about, Agent Kennedy?"

Leon shrugged as he said, "The commanding officer in charge of the BSAA portion of that mission informed me of the situation. He lost a good few men there as well as had a friend injured. He just wanted me to made aware of the situation in case I had to do something about it."

Sleet hmm at that as he nodded to himself before stating, "Well, that makes sense. And, he was right, apparently. We are sending you to retrieve the good doctor."

Leon nodded at that as he stood in attention and saluted the councilman, "Very good, sir. When do I depart?"

Sleet nodded at that as he said, "You'll be leaving today. The doctor sent his message from the outskirts of the small rural township of Vallee, an independent town outside of Northern Vale."

Leon nodded at that before asking, "Is there anything else I should know about the assignment, Councilman?"

Sleet frowned at that, thinking for a moment in silence, before saying, "I'm not sure. The town itself has recently fallen on hard times. Apparently, ever since the surrounding kingdoms and villages have converted from fossil fuel to Dust in their entirety from what I've heard."

He shrugged then, unable to come up with anything else.

Leon frowned at that and said as much, "Why would a former Atlesian scientist and doctor be there?"

"Unknown, Agent." Sleet returned. "That's part of your mission, sir. To find out just what is going on there."

Leon nodded at that before turning and walking to the door to leave. He was stopped by the councilman as Sleet mentioned, "Oh, yes. As part of you going to Vale, the Kingdom is sending their own agent to work as your partner while you're there."

Leon paused at that, frowning in thought, before asking out loud, "Why, though?"

"Perhaps because of this most recent incident, sir." Sleet answered for him. Leon turned at looked at him for a moment before nodding to himself as he left the conference room.

An hour later…

Claire Redfield was reading over the pile of reports and forms on her desk before she left to start the next clean up assignment that TerraSave was starting when she heard a knock at her door. "Come on in," she said absently as she continued with her work.

The door opening revealing a much more casual-looking Leon S. Kennedy.

She sat up and smiled at him as she saw her old friend. "Leon!" She said on seeing him. She stood up and walked around to give him a hug as she asked, "What are you doing here?"

"Just checking up on you. Wanted see if you've heard anything else from your brother?" He said after hugging her back.

She shook her head before saying with a smile, "Nothing much else from Chris. Rebecca is back on her feet and, in fact, will be helping me out at the site TerraSave is going to next."

Leon frowned at that. She noticed and place her hands on her hips as she demanded, "What is it, Leon? Do you know something?"

He shrugged and said, "Nothing much. Just be careful, okay? If that's in the same area as where Chris and his team got hurt then be on your guard. You know how these things tend to fallout."

Claire nodded back in agreement at that, understanding exactly what he meant after all the BS they had had to deal with over the years. At least, people like Wesker and the others in charge of the former Umbrella Corp. were gone.

"Don't worry, Leon. I got Chris on speed dial and you know that Rebecca and I will be packing the whole time." She told him before shrugging and saying, "Just in case."

Leon nodded at that and smiled at her again before leaving, saying that he had a mission in Vale that he had to take care before asking if she wanted to get a quick lunch before he left. She agreed.

A/N: Not much action to this one, I know. Was more of the setup for the beginning of everything to come. Wonder who Leon's new partner will be? I'll give you four guesses.
