(Disneyland the original Disney park built with the help of Walt Disney. Today it's one of the visited theme parks in the world. Despite this, its scale is nothing compared to Disney World in Orlando but that doesn't mean the park can't expand.
One of these new expansions was the new Disney Central land which will be a new theme land featuring characters from the Disney Channel. Lincoln was put in charge of the land's construction and made sure everything went smoothly.
Right now he was observing the new peoplemover that was under construction. He felt proud to be in charge of the construction but unlike Lori, he wasn't going to let the power go to his head, he respected the workers and never gave them a hard time.)
Lincoln: Alright guys you're doing great just a few more touches and this land should be finished.
Ned: Wow Lincoln you ready got this land under control.
Nathan: This place is really coming together.
Lincoln: Well I have my ways and you're the ones that inspire me to build this peoplemover.
Ned: We did?
Lincoln: Yeah remember when we first came to the park?
(Flashback to months prior Lincoln was walking around Disneyland trying to get an idea for the new Disney Central land. Not only that but the Disney Central Land for Walt Disney World would instead become a fifth park called DisneyTropolis this caused Lincoln to look at the Disney Parks to see what he could add to them.)
Lincoln: Now what can I add to these parks?
(Lincoln soon came to the Tomorrowland section of the park which was a theme to the future as he was walking around he saw what appeared to be tracks standing above the walkways.
The track also appears to go through the buildings which confused Lincoln, Why was this track here and why wasn't it in service.)
Lincoln: Guys, what's this track and why isn't it being used?
Ned: Oh that used to be that the peoplemover.
Lincoln: The peoplemover?
Nathan: Oh yeah you see back in the 1964-65 World's Fair Walt Disney built several attractions some would become Disney park classics like It's a Small World and the Carrousel of Progress. But one ride that stood out was Ford Magic Skyway.
Ned: The Ford Magic Skyway was by the Ford Motor Company. Guests would be seated in an actual new Ford model car from the assembly line and traveled through time into the ancient past and into the future. At one point, the Skyway traveled over a small section of the ground walkway before returning to the show building's big finale.
Nathan: Walt loved the attraction and decided that it would a perfect for the Tomorrowland section at Disneyland as at that moment the land was becoming very outdated and was to undergo a major transformation though Walt sadly wouldn't see the land transformation.
Adam: On July 2 1967 the peoplemover opened to the public along with the New Tomorrowland open to the public and it was a big success, Now the ride's trains didn't have engines they were instead powered by Goodyear tires and were sponsoring the ride, and the ride would take a guest along a journey thru Tomorrowland taking them thru the land's attractions and buildings.
Gloria: The ride was such a big hit that it would later inspire a version at Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom Tomorrowland. But as the 1990s came it was clear to everyone that Tomorrowland was becoming outdated and needed another overhaul while one was planned called Tomorrowland 2055 it was canceled after the Failure of Euro Disneyland.
Max: So it was decided to just copy Euro Disneyland's Discoverland and close the peoplemover and make with an attraction as the Imagineers saw the ride as outdated so the ride closed permanently and was replaced with a new thrill ride.
Sarah: This ride would be called Rocket Rods and it would open with the New Tomorrowland on May 22 1998 though the land wasn't really brand new they just painted everything in an ugly brownish-gold and bronze with very little aesthetics here and there and Space Mountain had seen better days.
Johnny: Riders entered the attraction at the former Circle-Vision 360° building at the front of Tomorrowland. In the first room, huge blueprints of old and current Tomorrowland attractions were hung on the walls; along with actual former Tomorrowland attraction vehicles, which were repainted like blueprints. The next room of the queue was the nine-screen CircleVision theater, where guests viewed films of the history of motor vehicles, Guests then continued down a tunnel that led to the elevated Rocket Rods station in the middle of Tomorrowland.
Emily: At the loading platform gone were the 16 passenger peoplemover trains but now there were sleek new Rocket Rods that could up to five people the vehicles would then forward to a staging area similar to that of drag racing. As the lights changed from red to yellow, to green, and the vehicle zoomed down a straightaway toward the entrance of Tomorrowland while performing a small wheelie. The ride experience was similar to the peoplemover going through buildings and attractions of Tomorrowland but much faster with a ride of just 3 minutes, but the ride had several problems.
Ned: You see after the wheelie riders would speed down the section of track before taking a small turn at slow speed and this is where the problems were. They didn't change the track layout from the peoplemover and didn't put in bank turns. Bank Turns and needs on some rides like roller coasters to not put stress on the tracks or its riders.
Nathan: it didn't help that there wasn't enough budget seeing as General Motors was supposed to sponsor the ride but turned it down due to Epcot's test track having its issues. So the vehicles need to slow down at each turn to proceed safely. What also didn't help was the ride was a maintenance nightmare. The constant changes in speed caused the vehicles' onboard computer systems to fail, shutting down the entire attraction. There were also multiple mechanical failures, such as a brake shoe being launched halfway across Tomorrowland; no one was injured, I think.
Max: the attraction did irreparable damage to the track and support structures, as they were not designed to withstand the high speed and weight of the attraction's ride vehicles. Rocket Rods broke down at least once a day, which brought its queue time up to 3 hours. So yeah I don't the Imagineers didn't plan this right. The Rocket Rods closed in September 2000 for a refurbishment that was to last until Spring 2001, but no work was ever seen on the attraction. Then in April 2001, Disney announced that Rocket Rods would remain Permanently closed never to reopen.
Johnny: This unfortunately wouldn't bring back the Peoplemover as it was deemed too expensive to bring back so the track was abandoned and stood like ever since though fans have been wanting the Peoplemover to return for years now.
(This had Lincoln in surprise it was sad to see that such a beloved attraction could be abandoned for years now though this got Lincoln thinking can the peoplemover be brought to a section of the park.)
Lincoln: Can they bring the peoplemover back to another section of the park?
Ned: Probably but I doubt.
(Never doubt Lincoln as later that day he talked to Iger asking if the peoplemover could be brought to the Disney Central land he agreed as he had been wanting to bring the ride back to Disneyland for some time too he decided to bring it back the Rocket Rods brought it would its attraction withing affecting the new peoplemover.)
(The Flashback ends with Lincoln and the toons looking at the peoplemover and the Rocket Rods under construction.}
Ned: Well I guess we did inspire you.
Gloria: Well what do you know?
Lincoln: Yeah this land is really something isn't it?
Nathan: it sure is.
Ned: This is going to be the start of a new era for Disney Parks
Lincoln: You betcha.
The land is almost finished and will open soon and a surprise ride will come very soon.
That's all for now see you next time!
