Several moments of frantic panic overwhelmed Usagi as she struggled to think. The feeling of dread coursed through her as she thought about the repercussions of the Silver Crystal being in the Negaverse's hands. The world would end. Their solar system would end.
Serenity. Do not panic. Think Usagi, THINK.
Usgai closed her eyes and willed all the memories she had about the Silver Crystal to surface.
She recalled that Queen Selenity carried the Silver Crystal on her wand. There was also a lesson about how only those in their bloodline could wield the crystal. Her mother always kept telling her that the power she wielded would be much greater than hers. Serenity never understood that, but then again, she was also preoccupied by her naiveté and her love for life. She felt that she had thousands of years to learn from her mother, not the mere hundreds of years they shared together.
Usagi needed to contact Luna. She stood abruptly looking around for Shingo. Catching his eye, Shingo could see the borderline panic in his sister's eyes. He didn't even bother finishing his game. He walked quickly towards her and grabbed his bag. Usagi left money on the counter for their food and the two siblings made their way out of the Crown, Shingo leading the way. On their home Usagi explained the emergency to her brother; and while he didn't completely understand the severity of the situation, he believed in his sister's words and could only hope that this mysterious Silver Crystal was not in the hands of her enemies.
Arriving home, Usagi remembered Luna saying she would accompany Makoto home and that she was probably not home yet from that talk. Her parents were out of the house as she and Shingo were usually at the Crown for a lot longer. Shingo, also realizing Luna wasn't home, suggested a hot shower for his sister. All they really could do is wait for the guardian cat to come back home and a shower might calm Usagi's nerves. Usagi agreed and took a hot shower.
As Shingo took his own shower, Usagi sat in front of her vanity brushing out her hair, thinking hard about the Silver Crystal. Eyes closed and hands clasped at her heart, Usagi soared through her past memories with ferocious desperation. Even with her limited knowledge, she knew in the depths of her heart that the Silver Crystal falling into enemies hands could mean the end of their world.
Unbeknownst to her, as she mediated through her mind, crystal began to grow around Usagi. Slowly, the crystal crept from the floor below blooming up around her until she was totally encased in what seemed to be a tightly closed frozen flower bud. It was like this that Luna and Shingo found her with a gasp of fright a few hours later.
On the other side of town, Mamoru was having his own set of complications. It had started the night before. Mamoru had settled in for the night in his apartment, resting his eyes from his studies when all of a sudden, he found himself knocked out on his couch. When he came to, he was bombarded with memories from what seemed like another life. It was so overwhelming. Prince? Earth? Princess of the Moon? His mind was reeling.
Reaching up to rub his head his hand encountered a white mask that was on his face. The memories of the black outs that he had been having all of a sudden streaked through his mind with clarity. He was Tuxedo Kamen. He was one of the city's vigilantes helping Sailor Moon and the Sailor Scouts save people in Tokyo from the Negaverse. He didn't know who the Negaverse was and he didn't know why he was always compelled to go help Sailor Moon, but he knew that she was special to him.
Looking back at his more recent memories, he always knew when she transformed and where she was, like a compass always seeking the north. She was his north. But why was she so important to him?
Shaking his head Mamoru got up to fetch himself a cold glass of water to help him clear his head of all the sudden memories. Then, it dawned on him. These were memories of a past life. He couldn't quite say how he knew, but he just did. Claiming them as his own memories felt too right for him to deny. He was Endymion of the Terran Kingdom.
He could see himself with a family. A father, a mother, a prosperous kingdom that he took pride in helping protect and progress. The images of this family brought him to tears as he knew that in his current life, he couldn't even recall the faces of his parents. It was with these thoughts that Mamoru fell asleep on his couch, tears streaming down his face.
The next morning brought Mamoru a calmer peace of mind. Sleep had aided in helping his poor brain come to terms with all the new information he was suddenly accosted with and he was able, over his breakfast of black coffee and a croissant, to delve deeper into his past life's memories.
He had planned to go to Fruits Crown Parlor that day, but decided against it. There was a lot to unpack from his memories and he felt that he was in no state to be of any company to Motoki. He ordered a pizza to cover his lunch and dinner as he made himself comfortable on his couch and assumed the position for deep meditation.
Being the methodical person that he was, he decided to go through his memories in chronological order starting from the first memories that Endymion had. Being able to remember his childhood, even though it was one of a past life brought more tears to Mamoru's eyes. Endymion had had a happy childhood. Even as the only child of fairly strict royal parents, he remembered feeling loved and being happy. It was all he ever wanted from his own life and knowing that at one point in his past he was loved and cherished seemed to sooth part of his soul that Mamoru never knew needed soothing.
Mamoru's pizza arrived and he sat himself down to a slice and break from his meditation. At that point Mamoru felt great. He had his family, his best friends, the heavenly kings to help him protect his kingdom. He couldn't wait to see what else his memories had in store for him.
Mamoru's memories through his teenage years were eye opening. He recalled all his training and studying to live up to his parents' and his own expectations. Beyond his own expertise in combat and scholastics, he had also studied magic that he had inherited from his Terran bloodline. He had strong abilities in telepathy as well as premonitions and healing. In a subconscious way, Mamoru had been using these skills as Tuxedo Kamen, but not to the full extent that he was capable. Being able to get a sense of his old training let him know that he could try to unlock those same abilities in this life.
Then, Mamoru caught up to the memory that haunted his dreams. He was in his early twenties, taking a walk in his personal garden at night. As he strolled along the path breathing in the scent of roses, something compelled him to turn around mid stride. He abruptly turned, catching sight of something almost too ethereal to believe. In front of him, hiding behind a marble pillar was the most striking creature he had ever beheld. It was at this moment he had met Princess Serenity.
Mamoru's heart throbbed in recalling that name. So many emotions were tied to that name. Joy, love, heartache and pain. Mamoru got lost in the love that grew between Endymion and Serenity. He could tell that there was more than just love between the two star crossed lovers. Their affection and dedication to each other was deeper than just love. It was seared into their souls; they were soul mates.
Naturally the betrayal of Earth to the Silver Alliance hit Mamoru like a ton of bricks. The memory of his last day alive, the attack on the Moon Kingdom and his ultimate death in protecting his princess tore at his soul and brought tears to Mamoru's eyes. Endymion had been unable to save his people, his family or even the person he loved most in the entire universe. Worse, the guilt from knowing that he had left his princess unprotected from the evil that had killed him had him feeling remorse beyond the survivor's guilt he had experienced as a child.
Mamoru screamed out in pain, everything in his being crying out for help for the young man that had died all those years ago. And in that instant cry for help, Mamoru flashed gold and his after image faded from his couch in gold glimmer.
"Your highness!" Mamoru heard a concerned voice call out to him.
Mamoru looked up from his crouched position on a smooth polished floor. A young man in white with a horn protruding from his forehead walked toward him. Mamoru felt a sense of familiarity to not only the young man but also his surroundings.
The young man leaned over and offered a hand to Mamoru, who accepted the assistance to his feet. Looking around, Mamoru could see that he was in a grand building of stone and gold, a castle? A temple maybe? Patting himself down self consciously, Mamoru saw that he was no longer dressed in his casual home clothes, but a light set of armor complete with a sword at his side. The young man beside him smiled encouragingly.
Mamoru paused and thought hard. He knew where he was. He looked around again and noted the marble pillars and crystal altar at one end of the room. He was in Elysion, the hidden capital of the Terran Kingdom, the city which guarded the Golden Crystal.
"Helios," Mamoru started.
Helios' smile widened and he bowed. "Your highness, it is excellent to meet you in this life."
"In this life…" Mamoru repeated slowly the realization dawning on him. The memories that he had been reliving were indeed memories from his past life. It was all true, they were memories, and they were all his.
"I'm sure you have plenty of questions, your highness, please follow me," Helios said as he led Mamoru up a flight of stairs and to an open balcony.
There the two sat on chairs overlooking Elysion. Two priestesses brought food and refreshments as Helios let Mamoru gather his thoughts.
When Helios could feel that Mamoru was of calmer mind, he started, "As you stated, your highness. I am Helios. High Priest of Elysion. We are indeed in the capital of the Terran kingdom, which is located in a pocket dimension that exists only on Earth, and that can only be accessed by those of Terran blood or those given permission by Terran royalty."
Mamoru nodded to himself as if to confirm his suspicions and asked, "And how did I get here?"
Helios pondered for a moment and asked Mamoru some questions about the events that led to him recalling his past life's memories. "I can only assume you were able to teleport here due to the magical surge your memories gave you. Emotions hold a very big key to one's powers and that anguish that came from your last memory coupled with your cry for help must have triggered your fight or flight reflexes and you were able to teleport here to what your memories deemed as 'somewhere safe'."
"I… that makes sense, I guess."
"Something must have happened for your memories to come back to you all of a sudden like this," Helios commented casually as he took a sip of his tea.
Mamoru brushed his hand through his hair deep in thought. He shared his thoughts with Helios, mostly speaking out loud to himself while Helios listened intently. He was telling Helios about how he had just realized that he had been helping Sailor Moon and the Sailor Scouts fight against the Negaverse as Tuxedo Kamen, but noted his confusion because he didn't even know why he was helping them!
"I know that you only realized today that you are Tuxedo Kamen, but what draws you to these battles?"
Mamoru closed his eyes and brought up the recent memories of his alter ego. He was never at any of the fights first, and really he mostly supported Sailor Moon in battle. Mamoru's heart twisted at the thought of Sailor Moon. He recalled getting to battles at the same time as Sailor Moon, it was as if she was the driving force to him being there. The more he thought about it, the more he realized that everything revolved around her. He could feel her transforming into Sailor Moon. He could feel her fears and bursts of emotions during battle. But why was she so important to him? He tried to recall his past life's memories, but there was no Sailor Moon at the time of the Silver Millennium. The princess had her Sailor Soldiers to protect her… Mamoru's thoughts stopped dead in their tracks as his heart turned cold.
It was as if he had been struck with a bolt of lightning; how could he not have seen the connection before? It was as clear as the two buns on her head! Sailor Moon was his Serenity. That is why she was so important to him. Even though he hadn't remembered his past life, her transformations to Sailor Moon must have triggered their soul-bond, and caused his soul to want to protect her unconsciously.
Mamoru wanted to cry out in both happiness and desperation. He had found his soul mate, but his heart broke knowing the peril she had been throwing herself into.
Helios sagely nodded to himself as if he were able to follow along with Mamoru's internal dialogue. He began to explain that in this time the Sailor Soldiers, who had been reincarnated on Earth had been protecting Earth in the stead of the Terrans.
He told Mamoru of the evil organization that was the Negaverse, and their goal of resurrecting Metallia with the help of the recently awakened, self proclaimed 'Queen' Beryl.
The name Beryl struck a chord with Mamoru. As he said the name out loud to get a feel for it, he remembered. Beryl was the witch that led to the destruction of his family's kingdom and turned all citizens of Earth against the Silver Alliance. She was also the one who tried to kill his beloved, only to kill him instead.
Panic rose in Mamoru's chest. He wanted to return home and find Serenity and protect her, but his rationale kicked in controlling the urge to act hastily. There were too many unknown factors for him to behave recklessly. As Tuxedo Mask, he had only ever exchanged a few words with the Sailor Scouts, and was unsure how they saw him. He was a tentative ally, for sure, but did they trust him? Also, Sailor Moon most likely did not know that Tuxedo Mask was her soul mate from her past life. He would not let the reunion with his soul mate be marred with misunderstanding and assumptions.
He also knew that if Sailor Moon was anything like his Serenity, she would need to see demonstrations of his devotion, not just pretty words of love affection. Well, he was willing and able to win the heart of his beloved once again. But what was more important at this juncture was the safety of his Princess.
"Helios," Mamoru asked, "You knew that Sailor Moon is Princess Serenity, didn't you?"
Helios nodded and replied, "It is within my abilities to guide you, but I cannot divulge information that is beyond your understanding."
Mamoru nodded to himself. It made sense. There was a lot of information that he was just beginning to understand, and it would do no good for him to be overwhelmed with things he could not comprehend.
"So, the Sailor Scouts have been protecting Earth, you said?"
"Yes, your highness. The Sailor Soldiers were awakened when the threat of the Negaverse appeared on Earth and they have been working against them."
"How come those from the Terran kingdom were not awakened to protect Earth? Wouldn't it be our responsibility first to protect our own planet?" Mamoru asked curiously.
Helios sat silent for a moment pondering the question. "They had been, your highness. But…" Helios trailed off quietly not finishing his sentence.
Mamoru read between the lines and grimaced. He wasn't quite ready to delve into the feelings of losing subjects he didn't know, he would come back to the feelings of guilt and loss later. "What of the Golden Crystal Helios? Is it safe?"
"Of course, your highness." Helios replied with a smile. "The Golden Crystal resides safely within you. It is due to the Golden Crystal's powers that you are able to transform into Tuxedo Mask in the first place."
Helios then proceeded to educate Mamoru on the specifics of the Golden Crystal, how to summon it from within his own heart to utilize his strongest powers, also explaining how defenseless this action would leave him. It was the same with any crystal of power; power is always housed within its host. He continued to explain how the Golden Crystal's power stemmed from the planet itself and the relationship the crystal had with the planet and vice versa. As Mamoru thought, healing, telepathy, and premonitions of danger were all skills that Mamoru would wield with practice. He discussed with Helios about setting up a training schedule as well as how to maintain communication with Elysion.
Helios then gave Mamoru a crash course on teleporting between Elysion and the material plane. Mamoru easily recalled his past lessons on the subject and was able to pick up the skill with minimal effort.
With a feeling of being more complete than he had ever felt in his life, Mamoru bid goodbye to Helios with a promise to return for training within the next few days. With a bow of farewell, Mamoru teleported himself back to his apartment in a glimmer of gold dust.
Back in his apartment, Mamoru braced himself for his senses to be overwhelmed with his newfound powers. Helios had explained that in Elysion his connection with the material plane would be suspended, but once back on the material plane, his awakened powers would reconnect him to Earth.
