A/N: Not only do we meet the King of the Skies in this chapter, but I'm going to be giving Jacob a piece of defense. I do understand that lugging all this gear may not be a great idea, but I feel that it'll work out in the end.

Chapter Fourteen: Meeting With the Royal Family

The rest of the day had quickly passed and another night went by when Jacob had returned from his adventure with the Rath family and his little expedition to the desert. The scare from the unknown creature was still fresh in his mind, but he had put it off for now. The human teen was currently sitting on the ledge that connected the cliffs to the outcrop of rock where the boat sat. His legs dangled over the sides of the boat as he gazed out to the ocean. He had been sitting there for a couple hours since sunrise. The teen hadn't seen any signs of the Anjanath during the morning, the skies seemed really quiet in the morning and nothing stirred from the waters below him. He thought back to yesterday and last night before he turned in. He was starting to get really used to the feel of his new clothing, especially feeling it breathe a little more while being in humid environments. He had also tried the fruit that he had gotten from the desert and found it to be pretty decent. It had been a little tough to cut into but he managed to do so.

The human was starting to feel a little bored, not that he was complaining with the lack of activity. Jacob thought that seeing at least Boltia might liven things up a bit, if she wasn't in a bad or hungry mood. Getting up from his spot, Jacob started the walk and climbed onto the cliff. Carefully making his way through the openings, he walked through the tall grass. He stopped a few feet short of the opening when the small herd of Kestodon came running through. With a nod of his head he said, "Right on cue as usual.

"If that is normal for them." He shrugged, not really having an idea. Walking up the root, Jacob turned left to go to the wall of vines that would put him on a straight course for Boltia's nest. But as he walked past the drops with the big ponds at the bottom he failed to notice something falling from the sky. He jumped when something suddenly splashed in the water. He looked over to the spot in the pond and saw the water rippling from whatever it landed in the pond. Putting going to Boltia's nest on hold for a moment, Jacob became curious when he spotted the spot where the object had landed. Jumping from the botanical walkway, he landed in the waters with a splash. Moving over to the spot, Jacob saw the hilt of something sticking out of the water. Reaching down and grasping the hilt, the teen pulled out a broken sword. While the guard and the hilt were still intact, the blade was broken off and only a fraction remained.

Wondering about the ruined weapon, Jacob looked up from where it fell and saw nothing but foliage and branches. However, he did know that the weapon most likely belonged to someone. And he also knew that if someone were up there, then they be able to help him. He remembered the route he took to get up to the final camp of the Ancient Forest. Gripping the broken blade in hand, Jacob started to make his way back up out of the pond. He placed the broken weapon into his bag so he could use his hands later in the climb. His feet sloshed through the water as he came underneath an arching root. He found an opening into the tree and thought that it would take him out of the ponds. He was wrong as he came to a dead end and a couple of open spots, monster-sized ones too. Jacob was about to turn back when he noticed that the pond seemed to go deeper. Taking a deep breath, Jacob dived into the water and swam as deep as the pool would let him. He saw that the watery opening kept going and swam for the other side. His lungs started to burn from the lack of oxygen. He made it to the other side of the underwater passage and swam for the surface. His head broke through the water with a gasp and swam for shallower waters. The human made it to the shore and took as many breaths as his body would allow.

Looking around, Jacob found himself in a shaded spot within the tree. There was a path to his left that was a bit of a dead end. But when he took a closer look, Jacob noticed a small entrance around the pond. A glance to his right and he saw a path that probably lead to the foliage that flanked the left side of the second camp. Figuring that he could save those for later, Jacob got to his feet and continued walking up the small stream that helped to fill in the ponds. Coming up to a bunch of branches, Jacob had to force his way through to reach the other side. He fell to his knees on the other side and took a moment to catch his breath. When he felt like he was good to go, Jacob continued on. He found himself at a crossroads by root or a pathway that lead to the right. Figuring that the path to the right would take longer than he wanted, Jacob voted to go left.

He had to crawl under the root to come out the other side. He found himself in the area with the suspended boulders and the small Kestodon herd. Keeping low and out of sight, Jacob rushed around the herbivores before moving towards the path that would lead him up to Boltia's nest. A couple of them did notice him, but they only bellowed at him from a distance. Jacob ran up the root and slowed down when he reached the opening. He glanced back to see the male of the group give one last bellow before they all turned and carried on about their business.

Turning his attention back to the task at hand, Jacob started walking again. He made for the wall of vines and started to climb up them. When he reached the top, the human teen looked around for any signs of Boltia but didn't see hide nor tail of her. He moved to where he could look up to her nest and didn't see her sleeping. Figuring that she was out and about somewhere else, Jacob decided to continue on his way. Turning down to go to the shaded area, Jacob walked across the path before coming to the intersection and taking a left. Coming to a familiar sight of the walls of vines around him, Jacob began the climb up the wall he used last time.

Once at the top, Jacob started up the path that he took the last time and made sure to keep an eye out for the opening. He found the corner he fell through and walked out onto the connecting branches. Jacob wondered if the person who owned the broken weapon was waiting at the camp and figured that it would be the first place to try. Making his way along the paths of branches, Jacob came to the fork in the road and took a left. Walking up to the camp, he was surprised not only to see no one see no one there, but that there wasn't any signs of life. Same as when he had first found it.

Jacob began to get a little worried that maybe they had come and gone, but he wouldn't know for sure until he was done searching. Before leaving the camp, he saw a red fruit growing on a stalk and picked some of it and placed it into his bag for later. Walking back down the path of branches, he stopped and turned his head to the path that lead a little higher into the tree. The teen was a little unsure about the path, but felt that maybe the person could be up there. Jacob took the first step up the path and ducked under a low branch before coming up on a tangle of branches at the end. Seeing that the only way through was to crawl, Jacob dropped down to his knees and went under. He winced from the bright sun light when he came out the other side. Rising to his feet and shielding his eyes from the intense light for a moment, Jacob lowered his arm and looked about the place. What he was seeing as a small slope that went off the edge and down the tree. Lush vegetation covered both sides of the area and twigs of all sizes were littered on the ground. Up above on the other side of the area, he saw more of those wasp things buzzing about. Making sure to steer clear of them after what happened in the desert, Jacob looked away to see what appeared to be a dam made of wood. From the sounds of the water behind it, he wondered how it was able to keep it all with it being so close to the top of the tree.

Focusing, Jacob removed the broken weapon from his bag and looked about. Remembering to keep his voice down he called out, "Hello! I've got the remains of your weapon and possibly your other stuff too."

But no one seemed to answer him even if they were there. Jacob looked down the slope and walked to the edge. He looked over and gulped from how high he was up. Wondering if this is where the broken weapon fell from, Jacob took out the red fruit and held it over the edge. Kneeling down, he let the fruit fall and leaned so he could listen for a splash and counted, "One one thousand, two one thousand, three one thousand, four one thousand…

"Five one thousand." Was when he heard a very faint splash. Raising up again, Jacob didn't like the idea of falling from such a height. Bringing the weapon in front of him, Jacob looked down at the broken blade and asked to no one in particular, "If this came from up here, then where is its owner?"

It was then that he noticed something in the small reflection of the broken blade. Looking back he saw a small pile of bones. Shuddering from the thought of something being eaten up here, Jacob stood up and walked over to the pile. It was then he became surprised not only to see the skeleton of another animal, but one of a human as well. Jacob cried out in shock from how mangled the person was looking. From the look of their clothing, some of the pieces looked a little burnt. He did find it odd though that the guy's skeletal hand was holding a fork. Quirking a brow he asked, "Who brings a fork all the way up a tree?"

Jacob turned to leave when his foot bumped against something. Looking down, he saw a metal shield laying there on the ground. The shield didn't have much decoration on it, but there were three rings and a few etchings in the metal. Not to mention that it was pretty thin. Picking up the metal disk, Jacob hefted it and found the object light but durable. Turning it over, he found a pair of straps for the arm. He was able to slide it on his right arm with ease. Moving the shield in a defensive position. Figuring that this was a good find, Jacob looked down to the skeleton of who could have been a friend to the owner of the journal and the gear and kneeled down to say, "I will do my best to hold this shield with as much honor as I can.

"And maybe in a little while later, I can give your remains a proper burial." He offered, even though he knew he was talking to the bones of someone who couldn't answer back.

(Cue Rathalos from Monster Hunter)

Jacob stood up again and looked around the area again. It was then he noticed something on the other side. It looked to be a nest neatly arranged. Taking a step closer, Jacob saw remnants of egg shells that looked quite old. He heard the buzzing of the insects and looked up to see them flying away. He was startled when smaller animals scurried from their hiding places around the area and went down the slope on the other side of the dam. Having the suspicious feeling that it was no longer safe to linger, Jacob quickly made his way back to the hidden path. But he didn't make it in time as a well shot fire ball suddenly landed before him and exploded. Jacob cried out from the blast and fell onto his back. His bag landed a few yards close to the pile of bones. Groaning and opening his eyes, he saw a draconic figure descending from the sky. At first he thought that it might be the Rathian or a different Rathian, but as his vision cleared he gasped when he was looking up into the eyes of the male counterpart: the Rathalos.

The Rathalos dropped down onto the ground just as Jacob barely managed to move out of the way. Jacob got to his feet and readied the shield with his right arm while removing the katana with his left. Even with his weapons and the shield, Jacob still felt a bit under prepped for such a fight. The Rathalos let loose his powerful roar and Jacob readied himself for whatever may come. The Rathalos shot a fireball at him and Jacob ducked out of the way. It impacted the wall of brush and the vegetation quickly caught fire. Jacob grimaced from the intense heat coming from the flames. With a quick flap of the wings, the Rathalos put out the flames to avoid burning the place up. The two the faced each other again. The human raised the shield when the King of the Skies tried to bash at him with its clubbed tail. Jacob grunted when he fell backwards from the blow and cried out when he saw the Rathalos coming at him with its jaws opened wide. Jacob lashed out with the blade and it connected against the Rathalos' snout. Though it was a shallow cut, the Flying Wyvern reeled back from the slight blow and it seemed to grow much angrier. Jacob quickly got to his feet and prepared himself for the next attack. The Rathalos snarled as he came at Jacob and tried to slash at him with his claws. Jacob either used the katana or the shield to block when it tried to attack him. Jacob swerved around one claw strike and tried to bash the wyvern's face with the shield. The slight slap of metal seemed to disorient the male Rath for a moment and Jacob glanced about for something to aid him in the fight. He noticed a small glowing bug sitting on a twig and made a rush for it. The Rathalos shook his head to clear it before turning to follow after the human. Using his free hand thanks to the shield, Jacob managed to grab the bug before applying it to the slinger. But he cried out in shock when he felt something grab the back of his hood with a yank. He screamed as he was flung backwards by the Rathalos and landed before the dam. His sword clattered to the ground not too far from him. Groaning as he tried to sit up, Jacob looks to see the Rathalos taking a menacing step towards him. Jacob remembered the insect on his slinger and took aim just as the Fire Wyvern stood menacingly over him. Jacob fired the bug, but he became shocked and worried when the Rathalos managed to move its head out of the way. The glowing bug flew high above them before going off.

Jacob shielded his eyes from the bright light and the Rathalos looked rather unaffected by the blinding attempt over his head. Jacob looked around for his weapon and saw the katana lying just a few inches from his hand. He started to crawl over to grab it, but was stopped when the Rathalos let loose another roar. Looking up, Jacob saw the Flying Wyvern starting to rear his head back and open its jaws wide. The back of its throat started to glow and with wide eyes Jacob knew what that meant. Quickly removing one of the Dual Blades from his back he threw it at the Rathalos. The small weapon managed to nick the male wyvern in the shoulder. And the pain halted its fire breath attack as it screeched in agony. The blade landed behind the angry monster just as Jacob rolled across the ground and picked up his sword once more. Rising to his feet, Jacob turned to face the Rathalos who met him with a glare.

In a mad rush, Jacob hollered and braced the shield to smack it against the draconic being. But the Rathalos outmaneuvered him by hopping out of the way. Jacob turned with a swing of his blade, and missed the wyvern's snout by a hair. The Rathalos looked to spin around to swat at him with his tail again and Jacob braced for the attack with the shield. But this turned out to be a costly decision when the Fire Wyvern suddenly whipped back around with his head and caught his shield between his teeth. Jacob was very grateful that the width of the shield prevented his bigger adversary from crushing his arm with his jaws. He tried to pull his arm out, shield or not, but the Rathalos' grip on it was too great. Jacob cried out again when the Rathalos suddenly raised his head and started spinning around. This caused Jacob to drop the sword in his hand and he tried to hold on to the shield with his other. The human felt his arm starting to slip out from the shield and felt all the color drain from his body when his arm slipped out from the straps. Jacob flew through the air and landed hard against the ground. He rolled along the slope and could feel himself getting scratched up along the way.

He managed to stop himself from going over the edge and his head hung over the edge to see a few sticks, stones and maybe bones fall to the ground below. Blood started to flow from the side of his head as he tried to regain his breath. Feeling really hurt from that last tumble, Jacob groaned in pain as he looked up to see the Rathalos drop the shield. The object fell to the ground with a clang and the Rathalos stepped over it towards the human. Jacob weakly tried to get up and grab his remaining weapon. But before Jacob could even raise his hand, he cried out when the Rathalos' foot suddenly slammed him back down to the ground.

Jacob grimaced in pain from the pressure that the Flying Wyvern was applying but didn't feel cut from the beast's talons. The human knew that if he wasn't going to be killed by the poison in the creature's talons, then something else horrible was about to befall him. He looked up to see the Rathalos starting to open his jaws again. Jacob could see orange starting to glow and figured that this must have been how the man must have met his end. Jacob closed his eyes and waited for what was probably the inevitable.

But another roar, one much like the Rathalos' made both boys look up. They were both blinded by the sun from seeing what it was as it flew towards the tree, but it was coming in fast. A green shape suddenly came flying from the sky and barreled right into the Rathalos. The King of the Skies cried out in pain and surprise as it was knocked onto its back from the newcomer. The two wyverns slid away from the human with the newcomer on top of the Rathalos. Jacob was able to breathe a little easier when the Flying Wyvern's talons lifted off of him. Weakly sitting up, Jacob looked to see the shape standing over the Rathalos and his eyes widened when he saw that it was Mama Rath. The Rathalos fought to push his female counterpart off of him while she managed to hold him down by the wings with her non-poisonous talons.

(End of track)

The Rathian and the Rathalos looked at each other with glares before roaring at each other. The harsh, loud sounds caused Jacob to cover his ears. Jacob gasped from the pain he was feeling and saw that he was covered in various cuts and bruises. His body was aching from the incredible pain he was feeling, and he was just thankful that nothing felt broken, or at least too broken. He started to look around for his bag. The teen saw it lying not too far from him and started to shakily walk over to it. With a tired sigh he dropped down on his knees next to the bag and opened it up. He fished around for a health potion. The injured human managed to find one and was about to open it up when he felt fatigue kick in. With a groan of pain he moved to where he fell against some uncharred shrub.

His groan seemed to be loud enough to draw Mama Rath's attention away from her pinned counterpart. She looked over to the teen and saw him slumped against the bush. With a worried growl she got off of the Rathalos and rushed over to the teen. Mustering what strength he had, Jacob tiredly looked up to see a worried looking Rathian meeting him at eye level and looking him in the eyes. Jacob gave a weak smile and said, "Hey there. You okay, girl?"

Mama Rath only gave a light growl as she looked him over. Over with the Rathalos, he lifted his head and looked over to see the female looking over the human boy. He gave a small growl and tilted his head as he didn't understand what was going on. The Green Rath snapped her head to the male and growled in warning to him. It seemed to make the Red Rath worry a little as with a twist of his body he righted himself back up onto his legs. Mama Rath then gave a few small roars, looked to Jacob before raising her head and out to the east. Even in his weakened and injured state, Jacob knew that the two Raths were communicating with each other. He wondered about what as he fought to use what strength that he had to uncork the vial. When it was opened, he downed the contents and let his hand with the vial drop to the ground.

Mama Rath looked to the injured human boy with a worried look while the Rathalos remained where he was. Jacob groaned as his body was still racked with great pain, but felt that the potion was starting to kick in. He knew that it be a little bit before he could fully move. A worried growl made him look back into the Rathian's eyes. He saw that she was still worried and reassured her with a smile, "Don't worry. It's going to be okay.

"Where are the younglings?" He glanced around for the hatchlings. Mama Rath raised her head and looked away from the tree. Jacob slowly turned his head while the Rathalos looked to where she was looking. The Queen of the Skies let loose a small roar, as if to call something.

Jacob heard some far-off screeches and knew that it was them. Jacob wondered where the trio was and tried to sit up a little more where he could see. Mama Rath noticed this and moved to help him to his feet. Jacob placed a hand and carefully tried to stand up with her allowing him to lean on her. When he was on his feet, Jacob could see over the side of the tree and out to the sea. Mama Rath turned her head a little and Jacob looked to where she was looking. Looking out from the nest, he looked to the large tower of rock sitting next to the shore of the Ancient Forest. Jacob couldn't see the hatchlings because of the distance but could hear the sounds of their screeches. Glancing back, he saw the Rathalos looking over them to see and got the feeling that maybe he was their father. Figuring that they were somewhere on that rock, Jacob wondered how they were doing.

But another gasp of pain made him step away from the Rathian. Looking to him with a worried growl, she watched as he sat back down on the ground. He shook his head, "Yeah, I'm not going anywhere for a while."

The Rathalos just snorted and it ticked Mama Rath enough to where she furiously roared at him again. He jumped back in fright from her aggressiveness as he didn't understand what was going on. But Jacob managed to stop her by saying, "It's not entirely his fault, Mama.

"I did trespass by coming up here." He admitted when she looked back to him. He explained by saying, "I thought that there was someone up here he could help me. Either to understand how I came to your world or see if they could help me find a way back to my home.

"So don't be too hard on him." He asked of her. Mama Rath only gave a light growl when she looked over to her mate. Jacob then suggested, "Why don't you let him see his new children. I bet he really wants to meet them."

From the looks of it, the Rathalos really did want to meet them when he looked to the tall rock. Mama Rath looked between her mate, the tall rock where her children were before looking back to the injured teen. Jacob smiled and said, "Don't worry about me. I'll be right here when you get back. I'm not going anywhere."

Mama Rath still looked unsure, but they all knew that she couldn't leave her babies alone for much longer. Mama Rath took a step back from the human before looking to her mate with a small growl. He growled back and she took off into the air. The Rathalos watched her go for a moment before looking down at the injured human. Jacob could only stare back at him. With a small snort, the Rathalos just jumped into the air before flying after his mate. Turning his head, Jacob watched the King and Queen of the Skies fly towards the large rock formation. Feeling a little tired, Jacob closed his eyes to rest for the time being. And with that, everything went dark.

Jacob didn't know how long he had his eyes closed, but the sound of a couple loud thumps and small squawking brought him out of his slumber. He scrunched his eyes before slowly opening them. Both the Rathalos and Mama Rath had returned from the rock and three shapes popped up on the latter's back. A smile crept on his face when he saw Samson, Verda and Diana land on their feet before rushing over to him. The three little Raths all crowded around him and squealed at him. Jacob laughed when he said, "Didn't think that you'd visit me so soon. You guys are looking good.

"Diana don't bite on that." He told the Pink Rathian as she chewed on his slinger. The female Rath backed away from it with a bit of a smug look. Verda squawked at him and lightly nuzzled where his head had been bleeding. Jacob waved it off and he said, "Don't worry. That's just me from not being careful."

Samson came closer and placed the side of his head against the human's chest. Jacob could feel that he was listening to his heartbeat. The teen then said, "Yeah. You're hearing the thump-thump from my heart."

They all looked up to see the Rathalos walk up to them. With a light growl he had the hatchlings back away from the human boy. Feeling a little strength within him, the human shakily rose up onto his feet. Jacob became a little worried from how the father Rath raised himself to look down at the human. No matter how much he wanted to look to Mama Rath for reassurance, Jacob didn't look away from the Rathalos' gaze. But he didn't have to worry about facing the King of the Skies' wrath or anything when all the Rathalos did was give him a slight nod. Jacob was shown why when Samson, Verda and Diana all moved in between him and their father. The human tried to make it sound like it wasn't that big of a deal, "I was just doing my part to help. After all, Mama's helped me out before."

But it did really matter to the father as he lowered his head and gently placed his forehead against the human's. Jacob smiled as he know knew that he at least had the King of the Skies' gratitude. They looked over to the three little Raths as Samson, Verda and Diana started imitating their parents by shrilly roaring at each other. Thinking of them, Jacob didn't look away from them as he said to the two older Raths, "They're in good talons with you. I don't doubt that they'll be safe with you."

Feeling that he's overstayed his welcome, Jacob carefully moved around the Rathalos to retrieve his weapons and pack. He put the iron katana back into its scabbard while placing the Dual Blade back with its match. The last thing he picked up was the shield laying at the center of the nest. He started making his way down the slope when he felt something tugging on the pack. He looked down to see Verda giving him a look as if she wanted him to stay. Kneeling down to the little Rathian he said, "I wish I could stay girl, but I think I've inconvenienced your dad enough as it is."

They both glanced up to the Rathalos who just snorted and looked away. Offering a smile he said, "Maybe they'll be a time where I can visit you. But until then, be good for Mama and your dad.

"And keep your chin up." He added with a chuckle while gently raising her head. Looking to her siblings he said, "All of you.

"Well, I'll see you later." Jacob said and turned to walk away. A growl from Mama Rath made him look to the Rathian. She leaned down and Jacob lightly groaned when she licked him upside the face. When Mama Rath backed away, he rubbed the saliva off and felt where he had been bleeding from the fight. Figuring that she must have cleaned it off, Jacob was still a little grossed out when he said, "Thanks for that.

"And for saving my hide, again." He added, thinking of the fight. And those thoughts made him think back to the note that he received from that stranger. Reaching into the bag, he pulled out the note and looked it over again. A growl from behind made him look to see the Rathalos look down at him. Jacob thought, "Oh, right. I was going. Sorry."

But as he was starting to take his first steps towards the slope, he was stopped when the Rathalos placed his tail in his path. Turning back to the King of the Skies, the father of the trio growled at him. Jacob realized that he hadn't been telling the human to get out, the Rathalos seemed to be curious about what he had in his hands. Looking down at the note he explained, "This was given to me by someone who has been trying to help me survive in your world.

"They say that I need to be trained in not only the tools that I have." He glanced to his weapons before looking to them and thinking of the others, "But also in the ways of those around me.

"I think they're trying to prepare me for whatever the world has to throw at me." Jacob guessed. He knew that it was kind of an odd question, he looked up to the Rathalos and asked, "Would it be okay if you were to spar with me?"

The Rathalos was a little shocked to hear this, as was the Rathian. Mama Rath growled at him as if to say this was a bad idea. Even the Rathalos agreed with her by taking a step back. But Jacob was persistent, while remembering to be respectful, "I know that this asking something crazy. But after today, and getting the note…

"I realize that I've nearly died just about every so often. I know that I can't stop death, but I should be able to defend myself much better." He insisted. Gesturing to the Raths he said, "And if I receive a form of training from not just you, but all the others that I've encountered, plus from what I've found, I can at least become more accustomed to this world.

"And at least be much more prepared." He finished when he looked out to the world from the Rath nest. The Rathalos looked to Mama Rath and she only gave a small growl. The Rathalos seemed to sigh in defeat to this request. Looking down to Jacob again, the boy looked up to the Flying Wyvern to see him nod his draconic head. Smiling that he had at least some form of consent, Jacob nodded his appreciation, "I thank you for this, kind sir."

But his words suddenly seemed to agitate the Rathalos as he gave a small growl. Jacob and the hatchlings jumped a little from the sound of it while Mama Rath was just surprised. Jacob could only watch in curiosity as he gently tapped Jacob's chest. Jacob looked down to where the stone was sitting. Guessing that this was something that the King of the Skies was really wanting, Jacob looked up to the Rathalos' eyes and said with a confident nod, "I'll make you and everyone proud…

"Papa." The name seemed to sit well with the Rathalos as he gave a content nod.

Author's Note: Okay, a few things about the next chapter. First, it's going to involve Jacob training; however, it's going to be more like a training montage. Second, this is going to be a bit of a major time skip of sorts. Meaning that a good while is going to pass by. Thirdly, Jacob will be going between both the Ancient Forest and the Wildspire Wastes so you're going to be seeing the likes of Mama Rath, Papa Rath, their trio, Boltia, Valiantops and Nana Diabla. I would add our Anjanath Grumper, but to be honest, he's actually what the training will lead up to. Maybe there'll be more practice with him, kind of like in the prologue, later on. I look forward to reading your reviews. Be sure to leave a comment either about if I've done something wrong or if you want something specifically to happen. See you next time.
