Chapter Forty-Eight: A Glavenus' Dwelling
Jacob wasn't for sure how long he was out this time, but the sun bearing down on him was what woke him up with a groan. Looking to his right arm he sat his shield still on him, but his sword was nowhere to be seen. With a groan he sat up and tried to remember what all happened. His fight with that creature and him losing came back to him. Jacob felt along his body and found the indentions from the creature's teeth. They weren't bad, almost like the time that Grumper had carried him up the Ancient Tree after the fight with the Deviljho. He felt the front and longer locks of his hair. From the feel he found most strands to be singed from the fight. It was then that he took notice of where he was. The teen was no longer where the first camp was. Nor was he somewhere that he recognized. All he knew that he was still within the desert somewhere. Around him was a small forest of trees and he could hear water running nearby. Behind him stood a large out crop of stone that stood pretty tall. Standing up on his own two feet, he looked for any signs of the Grand Spire, but couldn't find it anywhere he looked.
Knowing that he needed to get his bearings. Jacob turned to climb the out crop of stone and went up to a spot where he could see. When he came up to the top, the teen could see a lot better. In the distance, he could barely make out the Grand Spire down to the south of his location. But from where he was, it looked incredibly small to him. Looking down, he gasped when he saw that the dunes of the desert was a lot further down, meaning that he was on a plateau. And to the west was a bit of a forest connected to the plateau by a bridge of stone. Jacob wondered if that creature had brought him all the way here. He became thankful when he felt his pack still there and decided to consult the journal. He pulled it out and quickly flipped through the pages before finding the drawing of the beast.
"The Glavenus…" Jacob read aloud. He looked under the description of the beast, "A Brute Wyvern that wields its heavy blue tail like a blade. The appendage grows hotter and more keen with each strike until it glows red."
He put the book away and looked around again at his surroundings. He could see that the plateau was pretty big and could see a body of water on the other side. Feeling parched, the teen climbed back down and carefully made his way towards the body of water. He moved through the trees and when he could see the water, Jacob glanced around to see if he was alone or not. He didn't see anything at first, but the human from another world wasn't going to let his guard down and held up the shield just in case. Carefully moving towards the water, Jacob then knelt down and cupped his hands to take some.
After a quick drink of water, Jacob took in a deep breath and decided to find a way off of the plateau. He followed the water to the edge of the rock formation and looked over the side. The water fell to the side, landed in a large pond and formed a river that led down toward the south. Jacob wondered how far this would go, but decided to wonder later. He didn't see any safer way down, but he thought that if he needed a quick getaway it would have to do.
Walking along the edge of the plateau, Jacob found that it almost seemed like there was no way off. But as he neared the side where he woke up, he found a slope that lead down. Carefully making his way down, Jacob found himself at a lower level of the plateau. He stopped when he heard the sounds of soft growling and figured that it was the Glavenus that he had fought against. Carefully moving along the wall of the plateau, Jacob looked around the corner and found the Brute Wyvern sitting within a small opening that could fit it and another beast. Taking an opportunity, Jacob quietly removed the stone and raised it. The stone turned a lighter blue color than that of the Glavenus' back plates. With that little question out of the way, Jacob put the stone back. Looking on the other side of the small opening, he noticed that it continued downward and probably to the sands down below. Jacob tried to think of a way to escape, but as he did, he noticed something behind the Glavenus. His Iron Katana sat behind the wyvern, propped up against the wall.
Jacob didn't understand why the Brute Wyvern had kept his weapon with him, but he tried to think of a way to get it back and escaping as well. The teen was quickly brought out of his thoughts when the Glavenus start to rise onto his feet. With a huff the Brute Wyvern moved towards the edge of the flat. Jacob noticed that the beast's back was to the weapon and he hadn't shown signs of sensing him yet. He believed that if he were quick and quiet enough, then he might be able to retrieve his weapon and escape all at once.
Careful not to make any sounds, Jacob quietly made his way towards his Iron Katana. Every now and then he would look over to the Bladed Tail Wyvern to see if there were any changes, but thankfully he still hadn't turned around. Jacob soon stood side by side with the blade and carefully reached for the weapon. But no sooner when his fingers brushed up against the hilt did the Glavenus suddenly turn around and roared at the teen. Quickly grabbing the sword, Jacob held it over his head and braced himself for another battle.
The teen yelped and ducked down when the Glavenus turned and swung his bladed tail. The appendage scrapped against the rock and Jacob got up onto his feet while swinging his sword. The wyvern quickly moved back to avoid being cut by the weapon before lunging forward to take a bite. Jacob jumped back before lashing out with his shield arm. The edge of the shield smacked into the beast's cheek. But he didn't let the blow faze it much when he threw his head forward. The Glavenus' head knocked Jacob off his feet and he fell on the ground with a pained grunt. The boy tried to lift the weapon to defend himself when the Glavenus' tail knocked the sword from his hand.
The weapon clattered on the ground a few feet away from them and a worried Jacob looked up to the beast standing over him. But the Glavenus didn't attack him again. He walked away from the boy and over to the sword. Getting up onto his knees, Jacob watched as the Brute Wyvern picked the Iron Katana up in his jaws before carrying it back to the spot it had been laying. The teen was confused by this. When he moved towards the sword, the Glavenus turned his head to him and gave a warning growl. The human held up his hands, backed away from the weapon and the Brute Wyvern calmed down. Deciding to try something else, Jacob kept his distance away from the cave and moved towards the slope that went down to the sands. The wyvern gave a small growl at him and quickly moved to get between the teen and the way off the plateau. Looking into his eyes, Jacob saw that the monster was basically asking him to stay. Getting the idea that it was wanting something from him, Jacob tilted his head and asked, "Okay, so you didn't bring me here to hurt me.
"Much." He added as he probably had a lot of bruises about his body. The Glavenus gave a small growl and had a look that it was slightly sorry for being rough. The teen adopted a questioning look and asked, "So what am I doing here, exactly?"
They were both startled when a roar that sounded like another Glavenus was heard. The sound indicated that it was close by. The Brute Wyvern in front of Jacob turned his head back to the boy and ushered him back to the slope that would take him back to the top with it. Jacob didn't know what was going on, but decided to heed what the wyvern was wanting. Both human and monster made their way back up the slope and when they reached the top, the Glavenus gently nudged Jacob towards the hill with his head. Going on, he walked through the trees until he stood before the hill again.
Jacob turned around and could still see the Glavenus through the trees. Another roar sounded up to the top of the plateau. The Brute Wyvern turned around gave an answer via of a roar of his own. The human wondered what was going on and watched the wyvern move away from the slope by a few steps. Neither of them had to wait for long as another Glavenus came up the slope. This one looked to be the same height, and perhaps around the same age as the one Jacob's gotten to know. The biggest difference between the two was that the new one had large scars along its body and there were fractures in the back plates. Jacob wondered if the two had any family relations to each other.
Both Glavenuses started growling to each other. The new one then raised itself up a little and adopted a look of smugness as if showing off as it growled to the other. The one that Jacob knew seemed to be trying to do his best to tolerate his guest. The new Glavenus then turned their head and gave a small roar, as if signaling for something. Jacob watched as a third Glavenus appeared up the slope. This one looked to be much younger than the first two, a juvenile perhaps by the look of it. The smaller one moved to stand next to the one he had arrived with. Acting quickly, Jacob removed the stone and held it up. The stone revealed both new Brute Wyverns to be male. After placing the stone back, Jacob jumped when the Glavenus he knew roared in his direction.
Taking this as a signal to come forward, the teen carefully moved through the trees towards them. When he joined the three wyverns, Jacob became a little nervous from the looks that the two new ones were giving him. The older one roared and started for the human, but the one that brought Jacob here quickly moved in front of the teen and gave a warning growl. It made the scarred one stop in his tracks and give his fellow Glavenus a questioning look.
The second older Glavenus seemed to demand an answer judging from his look and the first gave a series of roars and grunts. But while doing so, Jacob happened to glance behind him to see that the younger one had moved around and looked as if he were going to attack the human. Jacob held up his shield to defend himself. But as the younger one charged at him and the boy yelped, the tip of the first Glavenus' tail crashed into the ground between them. The first Glavenus snarled at the younger one and it was enough to make the younger member of his species back off.
The first looked to the second and growled as if disappointed while pulling his tail out. The second Glavenus gave a grunt that seemed to be like a laugh and looked down at Jacob with an unimpressed look. The first moved his tail protectively around Jacob and gave a huff. The scarred one took a threatening step towards the two and Jacob reacted by holding up his shield arm defensively. Another huff came from the scarred Glavenus and he took a step back while still having a smug look about him. The second looked to the younger Glavenus and gave a small growl before turning to walk down the slope. The smaller Brute Wyvern walked around them and looked down at Jacob with a small glare. The first gave a warning growl and the smaller monster hurried to join up with the older one. But before fully going down the walkway, the second Glavenus looked back to the two and gave a small roar.
When the two were gone, the Glavenus turned away from the slope with a huff and walked in the direction of the small pond. Jacob looked to where the two had disappeared before looking to where the Brute Wyvern was going. Taking a deep breath, Jacob followed after him.
Arriving at the pond and standing a good distance behind the Glavenus, Jacob wondered what was on the wyvern's mind. The Bladed Tail Wyvern seemed to be calm at the moment, but he suddenly let out a frustrated sounding roar. His throat started glowing red and threw his head forward to launch a fireball in the middle of the pond. The impact created a large explosion, resulting in lots of water getting splashed everywhere and a large column of steam rising from the middle of the pond. Jacob began guessing that something between him and the other two seems to upset him. Carefully coming closer, he reached out and gently placed a hand on the Glavenus' side. It made the Brute Wyvern look back to him. Jacob then moved to the side and said, "Okay, you've pretty much established that you brought me here for a reason. And it's clearly not to eat me, obviously.
"And while I promise not to run away or take my sword until you say so…" He vowed and the Glavenus seemed content with that. Jacob then said, still unsure of everything, "But I still need answers. Please."
The Glavenus seemed to be thinking about it pretty hard. With a sigh, the Brute Wyvern lowered himself onto his belly. Taking this as a sign to climb on, Jacob quickly pulled himself between a few of the back plates and held on. The Glavenus then stood up again and headed towards the slope that would take them down to the bottom of the plateau.
…
The walk took a couple of hours, but after making it to the bridge of stone and going deep into the forest, the Glavenus brought Jacob to a clearing. The spot looked big enough for a few monsters and led into a tall thicket. The Glavenus stopped and Jacob took the hint to get off. Sliding off the wyvern's back, Jacob looked up to the wyvern. The taller of the two gestured for him to go into the thicket with his head. Slowly making his way in, Jacob came upon a disheartening sight.
In the middle of the thicket, was a medium-sized nest. And laying in the middle of the nest were a clutch of broken eggs. And beyond that, lay the body of a Glavenus skeleton. Jacob moved out of the way when the Glavenus that brought him here came in. The Brute Wyvern looked down to the destroyed eggs before looking to the skeleton. He started to lean his head towards the skeleton's and gave a sad groan. Jacob realized that this must have been the Glavenus' mate, and the eggs in the nest were also his as well. And some terrible tragedy befell them. Looking between all that the Glavenus had lost reminded the teen the Diablos family and the feeling was heartbreaking. Jacob stepped over to the heartbroken Glavenus and placed a comforting hand on the Brute Wyvern's side. He was a little surprised when the Glavenus then walked away from the nest. Though a little unsure of where he was going, Jacob still followed after him.
…
After a little bit more walking and up a hill, they came to a cave. There the Glavenus stopped in his tracks and Jacob moved around him. The human's eyes widened at what he was seeing. Charred bodies of what looked like Flying Wyverns of the same species were strewn about at the mouth and inside of the cave. Though he couldn't make out a lot, they looked like they had ears kind of like a bat and large buck teeth. When Jacob took a better look at the carnage, he saw multiple slash marks on the ground, on the walls of the cave and a few pieces of the bodies not connected to the rest of them. The teen looked back to the Glavenus and saw that the Brute Wyvern was ashamed while looking about the scene. After piecing it together, he got a better understanding of what happened. Jacob shrugged, "Okay, I think I'm starting to understand a little better, but I'm still not sure about something…
"Why me?" He asked what he felt to be a big question. The Glavenus walked away from the corpses and Jacob once again followed after him. The teen could only guess where the Glavenus was taking him this time.
…
The sun was starting to head for the western horizon when Jacob saw that they were going to a familiar place. The old den where the Diablos family had been killed by the mysterious creature stood before him and the Glavenus. The two were really careful when they entered Diablos territory and approached the structure. They entered inside and Jacob remembered the exact spot he saw the family when they were buried by Nana Diabla and Valiantops. He looked when the Glavenus gave a small growl and the Brute Wyvern looked to the other entrance of the structure. They moved to where they could look up and Jacob saw the spot where that thing had left a bite mark.
He then watched as the Glavenus moved to a spot away from him and started making swinging motions with his sword tail. When he finished he looked back to Jacob with a knowing look. Though it wasn't described in words, Jacob got the feeling that the Glavenus had watched the battle between him, his other friends and that creepy thing. Figuring that had something to do with the Glavenus coming to him and bringing the teen to his home, Jacob sighed and made up his mind. Moving to stand in front of the Glavenus, he bowed like a student does with their master and said, "I'm willing to help you."
The Glavenus gave a small growl and bowed his head in response. When Jacob lifted his head, he then said, "But if you don't mind, I'd like to call you, Ares.
"I feel like it would be more meaningful than just calling you Glavenus or Brute Wyvern." He added. The Glavenus, or Ares as he was now called, nodded his head. And so from that moment, Jacob the human became the apprentice to his master Ares the Glavenus.

Author's Note: And so begins a personal training session between Jacob and Ares. I plan for it to mostly last a chapter at most. For the Glavenus' name, I was kind of debating whether to call him Ares or Hades, because both seemed like fitting names to me. But maybe I'll save Hades for another. And I'm quite excited since this story has nearly reached fifty chapters. Maybe I'll have the fiftieth ready soon. I look forward to reading your reviews. Be sure to leave a comment either about if I've done something wrong or if you want something specifically to happen. See you all next time.
