Chapter 6: The way home?
Reed Richards one of the most brilliant minds the world has known was as usual trying to solve a problem. That problem being how to send someone back to a reality when their matter was phased into two states. He had been taking scans of Power Girl for awhile now and he was sure he was getting the right 'frequency' as it were of her home reality.
While he hated he had been constructing a specific dimensional portal to take her home when he could. The portal was actually the simpler part of the problem, using designs based on the portals he made to get to the Negative Zone and some other information he gathered from various dimensional and time travel technology from over the years.
The portal turned out pretty simple, just a square gate made out of metal with wires, cables and control panels. He did make it large enough for the Fantastic Car to go through, after all while he was confident, he could find that other Earth, where exactly the portal would end up on her Earth, that was another story.
Sure, once he knew there the other location was it would be simple to change the location, but you never know where it could end up. It was why he added in a few features like a security barrier, if it ended up in the bottom of the ocean, they would get flooded by the pressure change. Then there was that time he found a dimension where apparently everyone was Zombified. The Zombie version of himself tried to get Reed to let him in. It was a good thing he hadn't and the ruse with the fake image overlapping the zombie version of himself failed.
That dimension was on the list of worlds to be locked out of any dimensional travel device he made in the future.
"How are things going Reed?" Sue asked entering the room.
Reed signed as he sat back in his chair. "Just waiting for the computer to finish this latest equation. Are the kids asleep yet?"
"Almost," She stood behind him rubbing his shoulders.
Reed relaxed a bit enjoying the touch of his wife and love of his life. He tried not to get too sucked into his work, but it was difficult at times. His mind was geared to solve problems, even as a child he wanted to know everything and figure out the universe around him. It had led to some issues, mainly it was hard for a young boy like him to find friends. It was why Ben was such an important part of his family.
Just then the computer chimed as Reed cast a glance at it. He froze as he leaned forward to look at the results. Sue knowing her husband very well knew from his reaction that something had happened.
"Reed?"
"I think I have it," he started typing quickly as equations started to flow over the large screen. Sue couldn't follow even half of it but she knew what he was talking about.
"You found her home?"
Reed nodded as he double checked and then triple checked. "I believe so."
It was the next day when Peter was on patrol, so far nothing major was going on. No super villains running amok or serious crimes. Sure, there was the car jacking he stopped, some kids stop a car for a joy ride but he set them straight (at least he hoped) found a shootout between gangs. That he hoped was just wrong place wrong time and not the start of a full-blown gang war.
He hated it when that happened, too many people got into the crossfire, and it was constant work to keep things contained. Maybe he'd check in with Dare Devil later to make sure he hadn't heard of anyone making major moves. The man had a better pulse on the underworld than he did after all.
He was in mid swing when he felt his spider sense go off, nothing blaring but more like a tap on the shoulder type warning. He was in mid turn when a blur snagged him up and he realized he was flying.
"There you are!" Power Girl happily said. "I've got great news!"
"You got a job and you're not mooching off the Fantastic Four? Oh, let me guess Val finally convinced you to try out her latest invention?"
"I might be a bit annoyed if I wasn't so happy," she replied still had him in a hug suspended above the city. "I'm going home! Reed found it and I finally get to go home."
Peter was mostly happy for her, he really was although he would lie and say he would miss her but this wasn't her home. The few weeks she had been here had been interesting to say the least, but he knew how home sick and worried she was.
"Well, that's great Karen," He hugged her back as she floated them down to a rooftop to let go. "So, when are you going back?"
"In about an hour I wanted to thank everyone that's been helpful to me, also Reed asked if I could show him and the family around my universe and I said I wanted to ask if you wanted to come."
"Really?"
She smiled warmly at him. "Without you, I honesty don't know what I would have done. You helped me so much being here, and I wanted to give you and the FF a thank you. So, when we get back, I'm treating you all and I'm not taking no for an answer."
"Well, it is a slow day and honestly, you've talked so much about your reality I have been curious about it. Oh, I wonder if I can get some movies that don't exist here, that would be fun." Peter wondered if he could even pull a prank and have an Avenger's movie night and when people claimed they didn't know the film Peter could pretend he couldn't understand how they didn't remember it.
He wondered how long he could put up the act before someone figured it out. Maybe there would be a Stallone and Arnold buddy cop movie or something over there? That would throw people for a loop.
"Well New York isn't on fire or anything at the moment," Peter was thankful for a slow day at least. Although he just knew that the moment, he got back something like Doc Ock or one of the Goblins or something would be causing trouble.
-Fantastic Four Labs-
The large portal device sat at the end of a long room with the Fantastic Car sitting on the opposite side. Ben and Sue were staying behind to keep an eye on the kids while Reed was going with Johny, Power Girl and Spider-Man to the other side.
Reed was making some final calculations and adjustments on a tablet. "Okay I believe this should do it."
He hit the command as the portal device powered up as a vortex of energy appeared. "I can leave this one for awhile but Sue if we're not back in time before it shuts down hit this button here." He pointed to one by the controls. "This will open it up and you can send out a radio signal to our communicators to find out what happened."
"You sure this is safe?" Sue asked getting a little worried.
"I'm just playing it safe," he assured her. "Her world is a lot like ours so we may get pulled into something we can't get away from."
"Ah, that I can see happening," Sue nodded her head.
Across the room Power Girl was saying goodbye to Ben and the kids. She knelt down hugging the two children. "I'm going to miss you two."
"We'll miss you too, but daddy says you could come back." Val stated.
"Just got to build my own portal on the other side, Reed said he can give me the blueprints," Karen smiled at them.
"Well, I bet'cha wantin' ta get home," Ben smiled at her.
"You have no idea," Karen was going to have a time explaining her absence to everyone and especially her company. It would be worth it just to sleep in her own bed again and see her friends. She had liked it here, but it wasn't home. She walked over to Sue to give the woman a hug and thank her for everything as well.
"So, time for Dorthy to click her heels together I guess," Spider-Man said as they gathered around the car.
"If I had ruby slippers, I would actually click the heels just to be sure," Power Girl laughed.
"Alright all aboard the FF Express," Johnny spoke up. "Please keep your arms and legs in the vehicle at all times we are not covered for dimensional travel under our insurance."
The four of them gathered up as Reed piloted the vehicle. It rose up off the ground as it then shot forward into the vortex. The transmission was strange, it lasted only a moment, but it also seemed to stretch out for longer with plenty of lights and yet no sound, not even the 'car' itself as all sound just seemed to die off.
Then suddenly it popped back in when they reached the other side.
"Okay that was a bit trippy," Peter shook his head.
"A bit odd yes," Reed hummed and filed it away for later study. There was still a lot to learn about dimensional traveling. Looking around they could see that it was New York but also very much not like their New York. The landscape was the same and the layout of the city, they could see some of the usual trademark locations. Some of the locations weren't there, there was no Baxter Building, no towers with Stark, Oscorp on it, not even Roxxon. The Avenger mansion was replaced by what looked like an office building.
"Oh man this is getting weird." Peter looked around. "It's so odd not seeing things like Avenger's tower or something."
"I know right? I can see the Garden and there's the Empire State building, but it just feels weird not seeing everything the same." The Human Torch had out his phone taking some pictures.
"So, Karen," Peter turned to the blonde hero. "Where's your Starrware Industries building?"
"It's right over…there?" Karen blinked as she pointed to the place but instead it was a parking complex. "Wh…what the hell Reed!? You said I was home!"
"You are, at least you should be!" Reed quickly started to look over the data. "This universe has the same quantum signature as your own."
"Could your company have gone under?" Johnny asked.
"Not in a few weeks!" Karen was irate as the hope inside of her was starting to shatter.
"Maybe a hostile takeover then?" Peter offered.
Karen didn't think that could happen but started to really think about it. Could someone had bought out her company without her there? If she was declared dead sure but it should have taken a lot longer for that to happen. The same with her building, it would take months to tear it down maybe nearly a year and more still to have it replaced.
"I need to see how things went while I was gone." Karen stated.
Johnny tried his phone. "Damn I can't use my data because my phone most likely doesn't exist here. Hey Reed, try to find us a place with free wi-fi that should do it."
"An internet Café or something would be the best shot." Peter said giving a worried look at Karen. She was in her seat with her legs pulled up to her chest and hugging them close looking lost out at the city. He had a sinking feeling something horrible happened and when they found out what, he was worried how bad it might be for her.
They eventually found just that as Reed kept the Fantastic Car hovering over the building as everyone walked in. To say they got a few looks was putting it mildly. Johnny was thankful that his cash at least looked the same so he could get a coffee as only paying customers were the only ones that could use the wi-fi.
Karen got her own phone out as she started looking. "This doesn't make sense, it says Starrware is in California, and it's always been there. I can see references to the Justice League, Superman and everything so is familiar. See they even got a Big Belly Burger here, I see Jitters, Taco Whiz, they're all here but…something is off."
"I don't know it's just…wait, this says the Justice League only formed last year." Power Girl felt a cold lump forming in the pit of her stomach.
"Did we time travel too?" Spider-Man looked to Reed.
Mr. Fantastic shook his head, "Impossible, while there is a relation with time and dimensional travel it's two totally different means of access and travel. To do both you would have to set up a means far more complicated than the portal system I just made to get us here."
"Something's wrong, something is seriously wrong." Karen looked through more data and certain events she didn't see mention of. There was no President Luthor, some heroes didn't seem to exist and…wait when was there a black Kid Flash? Was he a new speester that took on the name? Karen felt like her world was being flipped all over again.
Peter gently placed a hand on her shoulder, "Hey we'll get to the bottom of this, trust us. We're here for you."
"I…I need to see my home, I need to know it's still there," She sounded so lost at the moment, not to mention desperate for something, anything.
"Okay point us there and we'll take you," Peter gently led her out with a worried Reed and Johnny behind them.
It didn't take long for them to arrive at the location she pointed out to them. It was a small apartment complex that she lived in, well it was supposed to be because while it was a residential building it was more of a condo building this time. Kara felt like she was sinking all over again, like the universe was just mocking her. She just kept losing her home, first her planet, then her own reality and now whatever was happening now.
"I think I'm going to be sick," She whispered in the car hovering over the area. She really felt like her stomach was spinning.
"I believe she might be having a panic attack," Reed took in the signs and knew this had to be breaking her mentally.
"Whoa there easy," Johnny said rubbing her back. "We're still here, focus on that."
"Right, focus, focus," she slumped in her seat. She tried to think, what could cause all of this? What if Reed was wrong and this was just a different variant of her world? What if it was her world and someone was messing with it? If so, who? This wasn't an illusion, at least not on this scale. It not someone messing with their heads because she still remembers how things were, if there was some kind of telepathic field her mind should conform to it.
The buildings were also a clue, they were solid and real so maybe some kind of reality warping? Who had that kind of power and why? It was a short list she came up with but in that short list it didn't make sense to make just a slightly altered world.
"You said there was a JSA headquarters in New York, right?" Spider-Man asked.
"Yeah, if it's still here." Power Girl was dreading this as she gave directions.
The building was there, Power Girl floated down to the front door as Peter and Johnny went with her. She looked at the panel by the door, it was a regular door panel and not the one installed by the JSA. It was just a regular door buzzer with apartments and the names of those living in them.
"They're not here either," Power Girl's shoulders slumped.
"I'm sorry," Peter said placing a hand on her shoulder.
"I just…I just want to know what's going on," Karen was starting to feel like she was in a waking nightmare. Like the whole universe was having one more joke at her expense. She felt like she was so close to home and yet still so far away, like it was forever out of reach.
Sullenly she slowly flew back up to the Fantastic Four's vehicle as she sat in her spot not saying anything. She was just looking to the side lost and felt like she was falling and there was no ground in sight.
Peter looked over at her worried, he knew loss, but this was so much more. This was losing your entire world, that was something that could break even the strongest of people. He hoped they could find out what was going on, but he had a deep unnerving feeling about all of this. He had no reason to doubt Reed was right about their location, but something had happened. Was it something they could fix? First, they would have to find out exactly what happened to this world.
"We got someone coming up on us," Johnny stated as everyone looked to see a form flying at them.
Karen narrowed her eyes as her vision zoomed in and a familiar face made her heart lift up, but then she noticed something was off. Last she saw her she was wearing this leather jacket with her costume.
As the figure got closer the others noticed it was a woman that quickly flew up to them and stopped. She was a tall Amazonian type with long dark hair. Power Girl noticed however the totally different costume. The gold was replaced with silver, the blue was darker, and her boots were blue instead of red and white. The red of her torso was a totally different material.
This looked like Diana the Wonder Woman, but her costume looked different.
"I have been getting repots of a UFO, flying car, and other descriptions flying around New York." Wonder Woman stated. "I take it that you, are they?"
"Yes ma'am," Johnny breathed out at the beautiful woman in front of him. "Hey there, name's Johnny Storm also known as the Human Torch, we were just trying to get our friend home. Now how about we all talk about this, preferably over dinner?"
"Smooth, Matchstick," Peter face palmed although he couldn't blame him. This woman could easily be considered an eleven out of ten.
"Friend?" Wonder Woman looked at the people. There was the blonde one, the one with a spider them, an older man with graying hair and a blonde that reminded her of that hero out on the west coast.
"Diana?" Power Girl asked her locking eyes with the Greek woman. "Do you know who I am?"
Diana was surprised the woman knew her actual name, most of the public only knew her as Wonder Woman. Looking into those eyes she could see a sister in need, she was lost and in pain.
"I'm sorry sister but I have no knowledge of you." Diana told her shaking her head.
Power Girl felt like a knife had been stabbed into her heart. "But it's me! I'm Power Girl, you know Karen Starr? My Kryptonian name is Kara Zor-El."
Diana looked shocked at this. "Zor-El…as in the House of El?"
"Yes! Please tell me you remember me? Maybe Clark does?"
"Clark," Diana paused not many knew of Superman's Earth name, but she had to be sure. "Are you talking about who I think you're talking about?"
"Yes, Clark, Kal-El, Superman." She would have given the name Kent as well but still she knew better than the blurt out full names out in the open. Even if the chance was low of someone hearing them from up here with the engines going. Still, that was more than enough to prove who she was talking about.
Diana knew of a Power Girl that operated out in California, but she never met the woman.
"Look there's something going on here," Spider-Man offered. "She was tossed into our universe and it took us awhile to get her back but things seem different."
"Different how?" Wonder Woman asked them.
"Things are not where they are supposed to be," Reed stated. "Her dimensional signature matches what I've been scanning so far but it seems this world has been altered."
"Altered!?" Diana replied not sure how to take that as far as she knew the world was perfectly the same.
"There's missing history," Power Girl offered. "And last time I saw you, you were wearing a different costume."
"My costume?" She looked down at it. "But this is the only one I've ever worn."
"I don't remember you ever wearing that," Karen told her.
Diana wasn't sure what to make out of any of this, this all sounded strange to her but her life was fill with the strange ever since she left the island. This world had opened her eyes to countless things, was this yet another one or a trick of some kind? They certainly didn't seem to out right lying to her, she could hear and feel their honesty. If it came down to it she could always use her lasso to get the truth out of them.
"Wonder Woman, come in," The communicator in her ear went off hearing Batman's voice on the other line.
She reached up to her ear. "I'm here."
"Did you find out what those reports in New York were about?"
"Yes," She paused looking at them. "I think we need to get the team together."
"Are we in danger?"
"I'm not sure," She answered honestly. "But I feel we'll need to get everyone together because I found a few people in a curious flying vehicle. They claim to be from another reality but one of them states she's from our reality and it's been altered."
There was a pause on the other end she knew he was thinking, he always thought deeply, always making plans within plans, judging the pros and cons before making a choice.
"Have you tried the lasso yet?" He finally stated.
She figured he would want some kind of proof and while she knew he didn't totally trust the lasso's power, he knew well enough that it could be used to get to the heart of the matter more quickly.
"I was thinking of doing that just before you called."
"Alright do it."
She took off her lasso as the three men weren't sure what was going on but Power Girl knew. She had a feeling it would come to this as she placed her hand out. Wonder Woman could see this strange woman knew what was happening, so she knew the lasso's power as well? She placed the golden lasso in the woman's hand as it glowed.
"Was everything you said to me the truth?" She asked.
"Yes." Power Girl answered.
"Do any of you mean harm to this world or it's people?"
"Never."
"Did you hear all that?" She asked over the comms.
"Yes, I heard it…I'll inform the others, we need to meet these people." Batman closed the communication link as he was most likely calling the others.
"What just happened?" Peter asked.
"Yeah, what he said," Johnny nodded. "What's with the glowing rope?"
"It's the Lasso of Truth," Wonder Woman stated putting it back. "It forces anyone it touches to tell the truth."
"Wait seriously?!" Peter looked at it. "Man, that has to be helpful in getting out information. I usually have to hang criminals upside down to get them to talk."
"Or talk them into submission," Johnny joked.
"Hey that sometimes works as well." Spider-Man replied.
"So, what happens now?" Reed asked Wonder Woman.
"Now, you all get to meet the Justice League." She replied.
