The Outbreak: Day 58

Daryl

I ain't never seen a sorrier sack of people in my whole damn life, sittin' across this half-ass fire from Shane and his group of survivors. I lean back on my arm, half sittin' half layin' on the ground beside… what the hell's her name?

She's the one that came tramplin' through the trees callin' my name - wanting to play some stupid ass game like the world's not fallin' apart around us. Olive Oyl, the china man, the black guy, the blonde girl's sister and… Haley, all sit around the dying fire passing a bottle of Jack around and that's the reason I'm here.

…for the Jack. Luckily Merle's out deep in the woods "settin' traps" which means getting high off the bag of pills he brought with him from home. He'd never let me sit around with these assholes playin' nice - drinkin' their booze but I am so fucking tired of tracking deer and setting snares - tired of worrying about all this bullshit going on around us.

Merle sure as hell ain't worried about it. None of these assholes are takin' any of it seriously. Just one fucking night I don't want to be the only one trying to be a step ahead. I glance across the fire to the dark haired girl, the only one whose name I remember and idly wonder how she feels about all of this.

She was already here when we showed up with guns blazing, ready to rob them all blind. Then the women eased out from hiding, then the kids and say what you will about Merle Dixon - he ain't heartless enough to take food out of no kid's mouth. So we joined them, much to my dismay. The woods are free we ain't gotta ask permission but Merle said it would be good while we regroup to have others watching our six…, even if neither of us think this group is very capable.

Haley looks up slowly and meets my gaze from across the fire as the blonde sister beside me taps my shoulder with the jack bottle and I take it quickly, letting the warm liquor pour down my gullet. When I search for her enchanting eyes again she's looking down at her hands.

"Alright Dixon - your turn. Two truths and a lie." Big dick Shane says with a laugh as I pass the bottle on and all eyes turn to me. Suddenly I don't want to do this anymore. All you can hear are the frogs singin' down at the quarry as I pull my bottom lip between my teeth and try to think of some stupid shit to say so they'll move on.

"Alright…, Merle's the only family I got left. I ain't never had ice cream before…" I take in a quick breath. "…and I killed a man…, before all this." I motion to the nothing around us. The group gets even quieter before Shane's laugh fills the void. "The ice cream one. Everyone's had fuckin' ice cream before." He says laughing again as he puts his arm around Olive Oyl who's smiling up at me like she fuckin' knows me.

I ain't never had ice cream. Always wanted it when I was a kid but when I asked I just got an ass beatin' for my trouble. Looking around this camp I see what these people think of me - jus' some killer redneck. Every cell in my body says to get up and leave but the booze has almost made its way back to me again.

I don't give a shit what they think. Probably best they do think I'm a killer.

"You've never killed anyone, before this." Haley says quietly, finally taking some of the attention off of me as our eyes meet again.

"Oh yeah? What makes you think that, Rabbit?" I ask before taking another long drink. The alcohol sends a warmth through my body, easing the stiffness in my back as I sit up straight and glare at her from across the fire. "…because I've never had ice cream before either." Is all she says, causing a tightness to fill my chest.

Another awkward silence falls over the group before the blonde beside me claps her hands together breaking my gaze away from Haley's. These people are to damn loud.

"Okay! Let's play a new game!" She says in her loud annoying voice - taking the near empty booze bottle and sitting it down beside the dying fire. "Dale! Come on - we're gonna play spin the bottle!"

I glance up to the RV where the old man sits perched as a look out. "Somebody's gotta keep their head around here. I'm good." He calls back and she slumps back down beside me with her bright, eager smile. "Fine. Who's first?"

"Your idea, Amy. You go first." Shane says with a grin, running his hand over the stubble on his jaw as he glances to the dumbass woman beside him. Haley who sits beside Lori runs her fingers through her dark hair and takes in a deep breath. I don't think she signed up for this shit either.

The girl beside me loses her nerve from Shane's sly grin and shakes her head no, turning a bright shade of red as Olive Oyl reaches for the bottle and spins it quickly. We all watch as it stops conveniently on Shane and I swear I feel my eyes roll into the back of my head.

Like they ever need a damn bottle.

I set my gaze on the low flames of the fire as Haley takes a reluctant turn, knowing before it even stops spinning that son of a bitch is gonna land on me. "Alright Dixon, get ya some." Shane says with a grunt of air leaving his throat as Lori elbows him in the ribs. I look up to the dark haired girl whose eyes are wider than I've ever seen them and it's her turn to chew on her lip.

Fuck it.

I push myself up to my knees and lean across the low fire, sinking a hand into the back of her hair as I bring her face forward and kiss her quickly.

The silence that fills my head when our lips meet nearly stop's my heart. Her tongue brushes against my lips causing my fingers to tighten in her hair as I allow her to deepen the kiss that leaves me aching in places I didn't even know existed. It only lasts fifteen seconds but it feels like a lot longer as she sits back in her spot leaving me leaning over the fire like an idiot.

"Damn, now that's a fuckin' kiss." I hear Shane say as I sit back on the ground and finally take an inhale of breath, looking at anything but the vixen sitting across from me. For once in a long fucking time there's nothing in my brain, no thoughts of where my next meal's coming from - who or what the hells tryin' to kill me or why the fuck the world is turnin' into some kind of scary movie. All I can seem to register is the ache that's growing in my chest as I watch the girl beside me and the Asian boy make out awkwardly.

"Alright. That's enough of this. Thanks for the booze." I mutter, pushing myself up from the fire and stalking off to the woods where my camp's set up. Apparently blondie and the china man are still on their turn as the groups laughs and voices fill the trees. Fuckin' idiots - laughin' and playin' their stupid ass games. They ain't gonna be laughin' when there ain't no food left.

I jerk the zipper on the tent roughly and flop down on my ass, running my hands over my face and through my hair before laying on my back. Merle made sure to grab his oxy's and his meth but I bet that asshole didn't bring no tums. I run my hand over the center of my chest, massaging the ache around my heart as I take in a needed breath.

Kissing that girl was a mistake. Staying at this fucking camp is a mistake.

The unzipping of my tent causes my head to lift and I watch silently as the dark haired girl slips into the small space, turning her angel eyes to mine slowly. I can just make out the difference in the darkness of the tent.

"What the hell you doin'?" I demand roughly, searching her eyes as she moves in closer to me. Her expression is hard to read - nothin' I've ever seen on a woman's face before. "Will you kiss me again?" Haley whispers when she's sitting inches from my face, her eyes searching mine and that ache - that fuckin'… burning feeling in my chest spreads into the rest of me.

She's lost her damn mind. Did that asshole Shane send her in here to fuck with me? Ain't no way no girl like her wants anything to do with me. "Why?" I demand, my voice deep and barely audible and I swear she's moving in even closer to me. I can feel the heat coming off her body as my eyes fall to her parted lips. "When you kissed me all of the… noise inside my head disappeared… for the first time ever."

I allow my hand to caress the soft skin above her elbow, fingers tracing the thin strap against her shoulder before sinking into the back of her hair to bring her to me for the second time tonight. The silence that fills my head when her tongue meets mine causes a groan to escape me.
