Chapter 5: A Desperate Escape
'Seeing Bobby come out from the crowd made me so happy to see him, but… something was off about him. I knew saying anything to him was going to be a big mistake. He was surrounded by the other cops, but they weren't doing anything to him. It was like he was one of them. All they cared about was me and Junior.'
'I turned back to see how Junior was but he was still asleep on the chair, mouth open with a flow of drool exiting out of it. It's good to know that I'm not the only one that drools.'
'As I turned back to Bobby, I then saw another cop tap him on the shoulder getting his attention and then he gets pulled away.'
Peanut then hears someone ask, "So whoever's out there is someone that used to be or is part of the BOA?"
"Can't be… all of them we're thrown into prison… Unless… whoever it is, also broke out alongside with them," someone else answers.
"With Brutal? I thought it was just him, Rodney and Trey."
"Someone must've broken out alongside them. They must've pissed him off and he now wants to ruin this for him."
The whole time, Peanut just sits there with a smug look on his face, hearing them talk about Craig. He then feels movement next to him, getting his attention. It was Junior waking up.
An officer can be heard warning, "Aww Shit, watch it with that one… He bites."
Junior slowly looks around in a daze until he realizes where he is, as his eyes dart all around.
"Are you okay?" Peanut asks.
Relieved to hear Peanut's voice, Junior nods making slight movements with his mouth, not making any sound.
"The shot really doesn't have any effect on you?"
Junior answers slightly dazed, wiping the drool from his mouth, "Barely."
"Don't worry, they… won't-" He sees Junior expression becoming worried as he slowly tilts his head up. Also becoming worried, Peanut quickly turns and leans away from who he's looking at… but when he looks up, it was Bobby standing there looking down at him.
Peanut felt relieved, but also being cautious wondering why the cops aren't doing anything to him. 'Is he with them? No… he can't be.' Bobby just stood there staring down to him not saying anything, giving off a threatening presence. He had to ask. "Umm… Buh-Bobby? Are you okay?"
Bobby doesn't react to his question and just answers back silently not changing his demeanor, "Are you… okay?"
'Is he mad? Is he an…gry?' Peanuts eyes go from Bobby's face to his neck fur. 'No he isn't. If he was, his neck fur would've been flared.' Still unsure, he whispers cautiously while looking away, "Yeah… but…" He looks at the other cops with only a couple staring back at them. "Why aren't they doing anything to you?"
He slightly turns away while crossing his arms as he answers, "They think I'm with them. This is all a ruse."
'A ruse…? A 'Ruse' means: That he's…deceitful? Dishonest?... Wait, that means…' Knowing what the word means, he begins to smile. "You… lied."
Ashamed from Peanuts mockery, he glares at him raising his fist pretending to threaten him, "This is not the time for that. We need to figure out a way to get you out of here."
Playing along, Peanut pulls away scared, and he says back, "How? There's too many of them watching."
"We just have to pick the right moment to act."
Junior just sits there confused, watching them talk to each other through theatrics. He asks, "Do… you know each other?"
Hearing Juniors question, Bobby turns away while Peanut answers whispering, "His name is Bobby and he's a friend of mine."
Junior looks up to Bobby as a smile spreads across his face just as Peanut interjects, "Don't… don't look at him."
Junior quickly looks away.
One of the cops at a computer starts scratching his head while shaking it in a confused state. "No… No… This doesn't make any sense." He gets out of his seat and points at it. "HEY! …Check this out before I lose my fucking mind."
All three of them turn their attention to the cop.
Someone else approaches as the confused cop asks, "That cop who's partnered with the Captain of Maple PD said he was BOA… right?"
"Yeah… that's what he said."
The confused cop then points out, "Okay… so… uhh explain to me, why the hell is he walking around with a Resistance debit card?"
Other cops approach, with one them answering by asking, "Are you sure? Resistance? There's no way… after what he did in the warehouse?" The more questions that were asked, the more worried they were becoming.
"That's what I don't get. I ran the damn card and every time it kept coming out as the Resistance. He killed everyone over there so there's no way he can be with them. So why the fuck does he have it?"
One of the officers informs pointing out, "BOA, The Resistance… Shit, we can't have another Nue Haven incident. That whole town was nearly burnt to the ground."
Another officer chimes in, "You're right. Heck, even Sonic was a part of all that. What if he shows up? Then we're really screwed."
"Sonic?" Junior quietly mentions happily. "He might sa-"
"He won't." Bobby unfortunately needing to correct him. "Even if he did come," He looks at all the officers in the room. "They would surly lead him astray away from both of you." As Bobby watches them get worried, he whispers to Peanut, "Craig is out there looking for you."
"I know. Look at them freak out over it," Peanut whispers back.
"Who's Craig? Is he bad?" Junior asks.
Peanut whispers, "He's good."
Bobby crosses his arms, rejecting his answer, "That can be debatable."
Unable to elbow him being restrained, Peanut answers, annoyed, "I'll tell you more… when we're alone."
"What he did to them was well warranted, but to kill them was a bit too extreme. He could've done it a different way." He looks at the exit. "I have to get out there somehow and get in touch with him… let him know that you're here."
"I heard something about some kids, are they okay?"
"They're alright and in good hands. I made it look as though I killed them."
Peanut is surprised by what he said. "You what?"
"That's what they were planning on doing-"
Bobby then gets grabbed being pulled away from them while the officer says, "Get away from them. Are you…"
Peanut and Junior watch Bobby gets scolded at by a Rooster officer as he pokes him in the chest. Realizing something, he slaps Bobby's chest and quickly searches all around, concerned. He then waves at a Bengal Cat officer approach, who is eating something. Frustrated, the Rooster officer takes it away from him, and then points past them to go do something.
Upset, the Bengal Cat officer grabs Bobby by the shoulder and they quickly leave out of view.
"Where do you think he took him?" Junior asks.
"I don't know, but that one cop looked worried."
Junior turns back to Peanut asking, "Do you really think he's not with them?"
Peanut looks around, checking if it's safe to talk. "I trust him. He's the one that drove me and Craig to the fair."
Confused by his answer, "He brought you here? Are you sure? He really does look like he's-"
Peanut quickly says back, getting upset, "Shut up. He's not."
Surprised by Peanut's anger, he stops asking questions about him. "Sorry… It's just… my dad's also a cop. Asking questions is something I do… a lot. It keeps me from worrying too much, making sure to stay calm and aware of what's going on."
"And that's why you got punched."
Junior shuts his eyes as he nods remaining silent.
Seeing Junior miserable, he asks, "How did you get separated from your mom and dad?"
"I was at the fair with my dad until…" He opens his eyes looking at the officers in the room. "…Until they lead me away from him. They told me that they were going to show me a game that was easy to win. Since they were in uniform… I trusted them. Once they got me far enough away from my dad and left me alone at one of the games, that's when they walked away from me. That's when I felt the stinging pain on the side of my neck. So you can't blame me for not trusting anyone right now."
Peanut lets out a sigh. "Bet your dad's strict too. Mine's also."
Junior nods in agreement. "Yeah… but the thing you have to hate the most is when they warn you about talking to strangers and to never be alone. They warn you over and over, and in the end… they're always right when it happens."
Peanut just sat there thinking about those last words that he said, hitting him hard. Hard enough to judge himself for getting into this situation by lying. He tilts his head down, shutting his eyes as he quietly scolds himself, "I'm the reason why this happened. I'm the reason why Junior got kidnapped."
"Here," a voice is heard to his left.
Opening his eyes and slowly turning, Peanut sees a cup of water. Looking upward, he sees the Rooster officer holding it. 'He was the one that pulled Bobby away.' Peanut turns away, not taking a drink.
"I'm not leaving 'til you take a drink," the officer said.
"Guess you'll be standing there for a long time," Peanut says with attitude.
"Alright then." He stands there with the cup out to him. "When you do get thirsty… and you will, it's going to be warm." Peanut looks at it, then back up to him. "I'm not going to get a fresh one for you."
Without thinking, Peanut asks, "Where did you take Bobby?"
The Rooster officer looks at him confused from the sudden question. "Hmm, Bobby?" he asks, but thinking about it for a while, he pulls the cup away and looks at the direction he took Bobby and then back to Peanut. "You know him?" he asks surprised.
Realizing that he just screwed up, he tries to think of a lie…
"Because I told him," Junior answers.
They both look at Junior as Peanut says, "Yeah… he told me."
The Rooster officer takes a step back eyeing them over and over 'til he walks away. He puts down the cup and touches his watch. He gives Peanut another look and quickly leaves.
Junior then remarks, "Good one. Now who's the one asking too many questions?"
Watching the officer disappear past a group of other cops, he scolds himself again, shaking his head. "Dammit." He turns to Junior. "Thanks."
"No problem, but I think he knows. That means we have to get out of here."
"I'm not leaving him alone here."
Junior gets upset, and tries to talk sense into him. "He can take care of himself. Long as he plays it smart, he'll be able to sneak out without… a…" His eyes widen in fear looking past Peanut.
"Again?" Peanut asks annoyed. Once he also turns to look… a deep sense of fear enters his body. Brutal was standing there, looking right back at them. He whispers, concerned, "Forget about escaping… that plan's long gone now."
Brutal just stands there, eyeing them over and over until an officer approaches him holding onto files. He nervously asks, "Umm, Sir?"
"I haven't decided yet," Brutal answers, not taking his eyes off of them.
Trying to stay calm, "We know that… It's just…"
Brutal turns his attention to the concerned officer and informs, "There's nothing… to worry about."
The officer checks behind himself seeing other officers scared and concerned. He turns back to Brutal asking, "But what's on your mind? That's what we want to know."
"Everything is going according to plan." He goes back to looking at the kids. "It's one of them. We just have to wait 'til night time to transport them out of here."
"Night time?" the officer asks concerned.
"That's right."
Getting anxious, he informs, "But that's hours, and plus there's someone out there causing trouble."
"Any idea who it is? Find and dispose of him as soon as possible."
"We have an idea who it is. He's Ex-BOA and somehow involved with the Resistance… which doesn't make any sense."
Brutal's neck hair slightly flares up as he turns to him giving his full attention. "Have you identified who it is yet?"
Trying not to panic, he stutters, "Yuh-Yes!" Going through his files, he takes out a picture. "Courtesy of Maple PD. This is what he looks like. We just don't know his name yet."
Taking it off his hands to take a closer look, his neck hair smooths as he calmly answers while handing it back, "Craig. …His name is Craig."
"He's using a Resistance debit card. We have no idea why he has it, but if he uses it again, we'll know exactly where he is."
"Good. Notify me when he uses it again." Right when he's about to walk towards Peanut and Junior, the cop asks another question.
"Wait… was he with you in prison? Did you do something to anger him?" the officer asks.
Brutal stops and answers putting his attention onto him, "He was there. I saw him every day, but no… I didn't do anything to get on his bad side. And also, he was unstable to put any trust into."
"Unstable?" the officer asks concerned.
"Yes, a ticking time bomb. He may not look much, but that thin body of a fox of his, is capable of holding in such chaotic anger. That's how dangerous he is." He goes back to looking at Peanut and Junior. "The only two people I trusted were Trey and Rodney."
"Rodney? He was at the warehouse when it happened."
Brutal slowly turns back to face him. "The warehouse? What happened at the warehouse? Why was Rodney there?"
Peanut watched them talk as the officer leans in to whisper the information to Brutal. And again, Brutal's neck hairs flare as he furiously grabs the officer by his uniform causing him to drop his files and notes. In fury, he demands, "GET EVERYONE HERE, RIGHT NOW!" He shoves him away and storms out of the main office room.
The officer gets on his knees picking up the files while he can be heard passing the order around to anyone near him.
"Peanut… I have a bad feeling about this," Junior says concerned as more officers enter the main office room.
Peanut just stares as more enter until he sees Bobby standing among them also wearing an officer's uniform.
Also seeing Bobby, Junior leans in and asks, "You still trust him?"
Peanut doesn't answer, seeing Bobby looking right back at him.
After a couple excruciating long minutes… Brutal re-enters the room holding onto a shotgun. As everyone forms a circle, Brutal walks to the center and franticly looks at everyone then demands, "WHERE'S MARCUS?!"
One of them answers, "Umm… He's still at the warehouse… keeping the Maple PD captain busy."
Brutal scowls at the one that answered and storms right at him, knowing he knew more. The officer brings his hands up to defend himself as they get pushed out of the way. Getting grabbed by his throat, he gets thrown to the center circle, tripping over a chair as he hits the floor. He aims the shotgun down to him and demands again, "WHO… GAVE… THE FUCKING ORDER TO DO IT?!"
"IT-IT WASN'T ME!" he shouts back begging. He points at the dispatcher. "IT… IT WAS HIM!"
The dispatcher sees Brutal turn to him, causing him to panic. "YOU FUCKING LIAR! IT WAS TREY'S IDEA!" Brutal takes a step to him, making him confess even more. "I SWEAR! Trey ordered Marcus to do it, but he couldn't go through with it. He came back here and grabbed someone else to do it instead."
Brutal then grabs the shotgun with both hands and demands, "Who… did… he pick?"
At this moment… Junior's warning became clear to Peanut… 'I have a bad feeling about this.' A Sense of dread overcomes him, as everyone in the room points to Bobby. He remembers what Brutal did to one of the kidnappers.
Peanut quickly turns to Bobby about to shout to him, but stops as he sees Bobby staring right back, slightly shaking his head telling him no… not to give himself away.
Bobby turns his gaze away and back to Brutal, as his body flies out of view, getting shot in the chest. He can slightly be seen trying to get back up, just to get shot once again, collapsing to the floor. With a final approach, Brutal stands over his body and aims the shotgun down to him.
Peanut turns away, closing his eyes only to hear the final thunderous shot.
In a state of shock, Peanut remained completely silent refusing to look where Bobby's body was as Brutal goes back to where they are and points to them.
Not even hearing what he just said, he then gets grabbed and lifted out of his seat, not putting up a fight while Junior struggles and fights, trying to get loose.
Entering the Conference Room, Peanut was placed onto one of the seats far left side of the room while Junior gets placed on a different seat away from him. Once the officers finish, they then leave the room.
Junior watches them leave, and once the door closes, he turns to Peanut seeing him staring off into nothing. Peanut was in shock.
'What do I do? What do I say? I know if I say anything, I'm just going to make things worse. What do I do?' He then notices Peanut tilting his head down staring at the floor. "Peanut… are… are you okay?"
Peanut doesn't answer and begins to cry.
Seeing him cry, he pleads, "Don't cry… Please don't…" Trying his best to calm him down only made himself cry too. "We're going to get out of this. You can't… just… Don't give up. We'll get out of this."
Peanut never utters a word back to him as time goes by. They desperately needed to escape, but Peanut was incapable of doing so.
