Chapter 13
Patience had never been Asuka's strong point, standing there in front of Shinji's door she waited, already losing count of how many times she had rung that bell, snarling she soon closed her fist as she knocked on the door again.
She was irritated, a lot had happened in a short time and her mind wanted something other than revelations about her past, still thinking about Mari's words, she would still have to talk in the future.
"What's that idiot doing!" She says angrily as she bangs on the door a little more violently, a few seconds later Shinji opens the door, his face marked with sadness and a few bruises from the attack he suffered, she quickly puts on her neutral facade as she speaks with control and determination.
"What were you doing that was so important to keep me waiting for so long?"
Shinji had a cloth over his shoulder as he looked down, his mind still caught up in the incident that had forced Kaworu to reveal himself as an angel, feeling guilty that this had happened, he spoke.
"I was preparing something to eat." He said passively as he looked at Asuka, his eyes focusing on the eye patch she proudly wore on her beautiful face, yet another mark of her cowardice in front of the world.
Asuka noticed him looking at her face, feeling that he was once again looking at her eye patch, she had already accepted the fact that he had stopped for a long time, but it was still strange to catch herself thinking about it, feeling her face blushing slightly she spoke as she entered the apartment, she missed Shinji's food and this seemed the ideal setting to have a slightly more civilized conversation.
"Well, I'm hungry."
"Okay..." Shinji spoke dejectedly when he saw Asuka entering his apartment, he wanted to be alone now to think about how he could help Kaworu at a time like this, Asuka wasted no time in exploring, being able to see the simple apartment, but as always extremely tidy.
"I see you're still a housewife." She said in an attempt to sound humorous, but Shinji didn't even respond to her teasing when he saw her returning to the small kitchen, in front of him some condiments she was preparing for her lunch, not hiding the fact that she had taken some more for herself.
Focusing her sharp eyes on everything she could, she wanted to understand a little more about this new Shinji, she frowned as she smelled something burning, looking at the counter next to Shinji she could see a cigarette in front of him, feeling surprised as she imagined Shinji smoking.
Hating his passive manner, Asuka remembered the old days, she wished Shinji had a little more pride in his life, he was Asuka's first boyfriend, and thinking about it, she felt her face blush as she sat down.
Knowing that she couldn't keep quiet for much longer, she sat down and spoke calmly, but with some tension.
"How... how are you?"
Shinji was still cutting up some things while preparing lunch, she could see that he had been listening as his back tensed, he slowly took a drag on his cigarette.
"I'm fine."
"I don't think so." Asuka spoke with slight irritation, she could see that the man was hiding his feelings, he had almost been murdered not long ago.
"You don't have to hide it from me, I can see you want to get something off your chest." Asuka said as she crossed her arms and waited, as usual not having much patience for waiting, but she was making a great effort to remain calm.
"I have nothing to do, I'm just thinking... that's all." Shinji speaks again as he smokes, another sign of his anxiety taking over his emotions, Asuka closes her eyes as she controls herself again, Mari always seemed to be the right person to talk to people.
Looking to the side as she heard the sound of something cooking, she remembered Kaworu, the SEELE pilot and her greatest enemy in the days of the war in the red land, still not quite accepting this she looked at Shinji's back, he trusted this angel, she touched her face not knowing what to think she spoke in a calm voice.
"Are you worried about the angel? Aren't you?"
Shinji stopped what he was doing, but soon he got back to work, still not believing how things had gotten out of hand so quickly, finally finished preparing the food, he wasted no time in preparing two plates, delicately placing one in front of Asuka.
"Yes, I'm worried about him."
Looking at the plate prepared in front of her, she smiled slowly as she saw that he didn't have to do that, but he did it nonetheless, losing the smile she went back to thinking about the angel that Shinji cared about so much, thinking about how she could use this to break the strong ice she had in this apartment.
"This angel, Nagisa... what's your relationship with him?"
Shinji looked ahead to see Asuka calmly stirring her food, he felt irritation wash over him at the thought of this being an interrogation.
"What do you want to know? Did I know he was an angel? Yes, I did."
Asuka swallowed a small portion of food, God how good it tasted, she missed it, but thinking of Shinji's answer she spoke again, using all her strength not to sound aggressive or anything.
"Shinji, I just want to know more about him, that's all."
Shinji ate a little as he thought about his past, Kaworu had been the only person who had given him any affection in this world, Asuka waited for an answer, but her leg was tapping on the floor in a sign of her anxiety.
"Kaworu is a very special person to me, he was the only one who didn't judge me or attack me for what happened in the past, he was the only one who tried to help me and still does." Shinji explains as he thinks about the past, slowly eating some more.
Asuka herself didn't know what to feel when she heard that Shinji was back in the past, a part of her wanted to be the one to help him recover, she squeezed her hand as she felt a little jealousy take over her body.
"Is he... is he your boyfriend or something?" She asked with slight fear, Shinji had always been a bit feminine in the past and the answer was something she now wanted to know.
Shinji stopped eating as he listened, glancing at Asuka as he saw her waiting for his answer, and with a fake smile on his face he replied.
"No, Kaworu's not my boyfriend, I'm not gay if that's what you mean."
Asuka let out an internal sigh, but why was that important? The redhead thought as she thought about it. But Shinji quickly spoke again.
"He... he's like my family, Kaworu has given me the support that no one else has, even though he's an angel... I can see that he's a good person, so... I want this to end as quickly as possible." Shinji spoke honestly, Asuka ate a little more as she listened, even though she didn't agree with him about the support she could receive, but she let him speak.
"Too bad people don't want to listen."
"You know, Shinji, it's really hard to trust him, but... I believe Misato won't hurt him anyway." Asuka tried to speak as calmly as she could, but her voice came out a little harsh.
"I can imagine." Shinji speaks sarcastically, something Asuka noticed when she noticed his performance.
"Speak up!" Asuka speaks in anger at the past, all the anger at feeling a sense of betrayal as she remembers Shinji leaving at the first opportunity when Kaworu kidnapped him.
"When I woke up they put a bomb on my neck, you tried to punch me and everyone looked at me like I was a fucking monster, so I still don't know if Kaworu is really safe." Shinji speaks with anger and sarcasm in his voice, Asuka clutches her cutlery as she eats even more, the situation not matching the wonderful meal she was eating.
Feeling that this was the moment to put some information on the table, especially the information he didn't know at the time.
"You know what, you talk like you're the only one who was surprised, it was the same for us, everyone thought you were dead." Asuka said when she saw that Shinji had paid attention to her, and with an arrogant look she ate even more.
"So when you came back, no one knew for sure if it was you, so it could be an angel disguised as an idiot, or who knows what else, so why trust?" Asuka says as she grabs some more food.
Shinji looked at her with slightly wide eyes, he hadn't really thought about this point when he looked down, Asuka smiled when she saw that she had hit the nail on the head.
"The choker was for everyone, even me and the four-eyes wore it for a while, Misato didn't trust anyone after the third impact so don't take it personally, anyone who came close to piloting an EVA put on that choker... The punch to the glass was something else." Asuka spoke calmly as she ate more, Shinji was still absorbing everything, Asuka was anxious, but managed to control her emotions well.
"And I can imagine that it has to do with our past." Shinji says as he eats a little, this conversation was helping him to gather some points.
"Shinji, for me you were dead, the last time I saw you was just before the activation test of unit 03, do you know how I felt when I woke up and knew that you hadn't helped me and that you had caused the third impact?" Asuka spoke upset, finally beginning to lose her poise.
Shinji closed his eyes as he heard this, his greatest regret was that he had stopped when Asuka needed him most, he looked down as he felt the guilt screaming through his body, Asuka, still angry at remembering the feeling that had taken hold of her, continued speaking.
"So don't blame me for feeling angry with you when I saw you in that room inside Wunder... Do you know how I felt after seeing you? All the emotions I thought I'd overcome with your death came back in the blink of an eye." Asuka said as she sighed, closing her eyes to control herself, she spoke again more calmly.
"I can understand your point about not trusting us, but damn it! Running away the way you did without even thinking, do you think that wouldn't make us suspicious of you?"
"I never thought you'd care about the truth, you just wanted someone to blame." Shinji spoke feeling like a child again, but Asuka quickly spoke up.
"Of course... did you have time to talk? At our first opportunity the enemy appeared and what did you do? You ran away." Asuka says annoyed.
"Misato looked at me like a monster and I thought..." Shinji spoke softly, but Asuka shushed him, her voice laced with resentment.
"Of course... you thought... you thought... That's all you ever say, Shinji!" Asuka spoke angrily, but she quickly calmed down.
"Didn't you think the angel might be manipulating you to finish killing the world!" Asuka spoke angrily as she looked at Shinji, knowing that he would surely protect Kaworu and he was right on this point, with a raised hand.
"Even though that's not what happened, but you didn't even think about whether it could be a trap from your damn father?"
"You didn't listen to me in our fight on the central dogma! You didn't listen to anyone and then you're going to blame only us? It's time to grow up! You weren't the only one who suffered and you're certainly not the only victim in this whole story!" Asuka shouted as she felt her lungs getting tired, and she added more calmly.
"We've all lost in the past, some have been lucky enough to get a bit of their past back." She wished she could go back to the past when her biggest worries were dealing with the perverts at school, Misato struggling to get close to her in the hope of comforting her and Shinji..., Asuka closed her eyes as she remembered, Shinji looked at her as he saw all the pain Asuka felt, swallowing as he thought about everything he had heard, Asuka sat back in her chair as she touched her face and spoke tiredly.
"Look Shinji... the point is that a lot has happened and we can't think about the past anymore, I really don't want to think about it anymore." Asuka said tiredly as she looked down at her empty plate, she knew there was no point.
"Easy for you to say." Shinji says as he thinks about the third impact, Asuka looks at him doubtfully as she hears this. "You can walk around freely and people will look up to you as a heroine, someone to admire, but they ask me to leave the past behind when everyone else won't let me leave it behind, every day I can feel people's eyes judging me, burning me." Shinji spoke with tears in his eyes, Asuka looked at him to see all his pain.
"You changed that." She tried, but Shinji spoke as she felt a tear run down her cheek, she felt her heart breaking at the scene, Shinji looked down as she continued.
"When you feel that you've killed the whole world, when you feel all the pain you've caused people, you feel that what happens to you isn't wrong, that they're not wrong."
"You think what happened to you wasn't wrong?" Asuka said as she began to get strongly upset by this, how could he say that what had happened was right? Feeling that this had been the last straw, she slammed her hands on the table as she stood up, her frown showing how stupid she had found that last comment.
Shinji stood up when he saw Asuka's aggression on the other side of their small table, he felt afraid when he saw her eye patch glowing with the anger she felt at the moment, walking backwards when he saw Asuka looking at him like prey waiting to be slaughtered.
Asuka wanted him to understand one thing, it wasn't right to ridicule himself the way he was, she focused all her anger on that, she would hate to lose Shinji again, especially after everything she had learned from Mari about her past.
"You stupid brat! Even though I hate the angel and everything he represents to the world! He was right to kill all those damned people who once thought they could against us! They deserved more than just to die!" Asuka spoke as she walked menacingly closer to Shinji, seeing him leaning against the wall and staring at her in fear, she continued her attack.
Stopping right next to the man she was fighting, Asuka looked Shinji in the eye while ignoring the great difference in height between the two.
"When someone attacks you! Fight back! Fight for everyone who is counting on you! For everyone who cares about you!" Asuka spoke as she buried her index finger hard into Shinji's chest, she could see that it was hurting, but she didn't even care because she was extremely upset, slowly her face changed posture, she remembered the feeling of seeing that girl with the iron bar close to crushing her head.
She felt tears wanting to run down her face, she closed her eyes to control the emotions that she thought were shameful, but she was losing the fight at a rapid speed, Shinji looked at her seeing all the fragility that Asuka was showing, he could see in her eyes that she was worried, calmly he slowly touched her face, not knowing why he did it, but he wanted to.
Asuka closed her eyes as she felt Shinji's touch on her face, she slowly remembered the cuddling sessions they had both had in the short time they had dated in the past, taking a deep breath she raised her hand and held Shinji's hand, even though it was an act of shame, she let the small act comfort her.
"I missed you." Asuka spoke shyly as she felt the warmth of Shinji's hand, letting her emotion take over, Shinji felt sad to see someone as beautiful as Asuka crying.
"Me too." He said as he stroked Asuka's beautiful red hair, even after so long it was still as soft as silk, Asuka let out a satisfied sigh at the display of affection, opened her eyes and looked up.
Asuka knew what she wanted to look at Shinji's lips, she thought about what it would be like to kiss him as an adult now, feeling her heart pounding in her chest she made her decision, knowing she was shorter than Shinji she used her calves to get taller to join their lips, Shinji was startled by the act, but he felt it was the right thing to do, kissing Asuka again was like the best drug for his brain, it was as if all his problems disappeared, pulling her into a tight embrace as he returned the kiss passionately.
Asuka pushed Shinji against the wall hard as she claimed his lips hungrily and forcefully, she was stressed and wanted physical contact and Shinji was that special person, always had been and always would be to her bruised heart, kissing him was the best medicine.
Touching Asuka's body, Shinji felt his mind shutting down at that, he just wanted to be in her arms forever, he kissed her passionately, every bad memory, every bad feeling disappeared in the short space of time they were in each other's arms, calmly he placed her on the living room table, not taking care to knock over the utensils that were on it before.
Stopping in a small moment of clarity Shinji wondered if he should go further at this point, his body numb from the hormones that were being released, he wondered if Asuka would want this, feeling a little afraid that he was pushing things a little too far he thought about walking away.
Asuka sensed this indecision in Shinji, smiling mentally at the knowledge that he wasn't going anywhere now, he was hers and she was going to do whatever she wanted with him, smiling as she moved her legs Asuka wasted no time in slipping her legs around Shinji's waist as she pinned him in place, she smiled as she saw that he seemed to want her, just as she wanted him.
(*)
Mari was in her room listening to music and reading some articles she had managed to steal from Akagi's personal archives. She liked to know what was going on around her. Feeling lighter at having finally managed to tell Asuka her biggest secret, she calmly read the lines.
BACK
Stopping what she was doing, she looked up to see that she had heard the sound of something banging, she knew Asuka wasn't home and she was alone, frowning as she turned off her music.
BACK
Turning her head to the side, she realized that the sound was coming from the other apartment. Smiling like a cat, she picked up the empty glass and leaned it against the wall.
"Put a stop to it, I know princess." She said amusedly as she remembered the last things she had heard from Asuka before she went to the apartment next door, she smiled as she thought of Yui and Kyoko, at least their children were getting back to what they were before, she calmly picked up her headphones and returned to her task at hand, smiling as she knew she would have plenty of material to irritate Asuka.
(*)
Shinji found himself lying on the sofa at home, staring at the ceiling as he felt a weight on his chest. He slowly stroked Asuka's beautiful red hair, with a silly grin on his face as he knew that at least he had a small moment of peace in his body.
Asuka was pensive, but she was enjoying Shinji's caresses on her head. She thought about the past and everything she had learned from Mari.
"What is it?" Shinji realized that something was bothering Asuka, so he waited calmly.
"I found out I had a family." Asuka spoke sadly, she didn't remember anything, only the feeling of love she felt inside Unit 02, now understanding a little what that was like. Shinji frowned when he heard this, Asuka had never talked about her past before.
"What do you mean?"
"I... I never remembered the times when I was a child, I only remember training to be a pilot, training to be the best, nothing more than that, one by one I finished off my opponents thinking I had nothing more than that, but I had a mother." Asuka spoke thoughtfully, her mind going to places she didn't want to go, but it would relieve her a little to tell it to Shinji who was listening intently.
"My... mother built unit 02, she was one of the heads of the EVA project... so I think that's why I feel so good inside it, she's with me somehow." Asuka spoke as she felt a tear run down her cheek, even though it was a gesture she hated, but she spoke nonetheless.
Shinji sighed as he listened, how could Asuka not remember her mother? Then he thought about his past, he had some nightmares involving a woman and a giant robot, but it seemed absurd to think about it now, so he calmly let Asuka talk even more.
"Those monsters, those GEHEN bastards have messed with my mind, made me forget I ever had a family!" Asuka spoke angrily as she closed her fist, she wanted revenge now.
"They made me forget that I had a mother!"
"I'm sorry about that." Shinji spoke slightly crushed by the revelation, he knew the feeling of losing a special person, he still remembered when he was abandoned by his father.
"You're sorry for what? This isn't your fault!" Asuka said annoyed as she looked at the man she had shared so much intimacy with, she had always hated that about Shinji, he made no excuses for things that weren't even his fault.
"I don't know, I just think that at least now, remembering her is better than not remembering anything." Shinji said as he slowly touched Asuka's face, he wanted to remember his mother, even though he knew that someone was wearing her face.
Asuka closed her eyes as she felt the touch, calmly she slowly laid her head on Shinji's chest again, thinking about everything she had discovered now she said something she never thought she would say.
"You know what, I think... I think the angel isn't so bad."
"What do you mean?" Shinji says curiously, looking at Asuka.
"He helped you, so he deserves credit for that... and he kept you out of trouble for all these years." She added with shame as she finally admitted it, but deep down she wished Shinji had stayed.
"What was life like at Wunder? What were those seven years like?" Shinji asked calmly, he wanted to know what the darkest times of humanity were like, Asuka tensed as she remembered, even though the world had been restored, she remembered all the days when she thought they would be the last.
"The Wunder wasn't as wonderful as its name sounds, it was more like a big metal can than a ship, every day we woke up not knowing if we were going to come back, if it was the last one, the bad food we had, there was nothing good about it, we only had a little peace when we arrived at refugee village 3." Asuka speaks dejectedly as she remembers the times she spent at Wunder, the looks all the pilots received from the crew, everyone thinking they were freaks.
Shinji closed his eyes as he thought of the torment he had accidentally caused people, Asuka noticed his body going rigid, she knew he was blaming himself for everything again. Recovering as much as he could, he forced calm into his body.
"What was this village 03?" Shinji asked to clear his mind of the bad past, Asuka smiled as he remembered.
"It was one of the camps made for the survivors, it was where the Suzuhara lived, I could get a glimpse of a normal life." Asuka says as she remembers.
"The place was very simple, but at least everyone could remember normality."
"Did you stay with Toji?" Shinji asked skeptically, Asuka had never liked her friend and it was strange to think of her living with him. Asuka let out a snort as she imagined the scene, then said something she would regret very much in the future.
"Ayanami lived with Toji, I stayed with Kenken."
Shinji frowned as he heard this, he knew that Asuka must probably have had her affairs after he disappeared, but he never imagined it would be with Kensuke, closing his eyes as he imagined Kensuke in his position now, he started to get angry about it, but why was he feeling so possessive of Asuka? She was an adult and could be with whoever she wanted, but why her friend?
Asuka realized that Shinji was thinking about it, she remembered the day she kissed Kensuke, but they were both drunk and it was just a kiss, a bad kiss and nothing more than that.
"Jealousy doesn't suit you." She tried to break the ice between them, but Shinji was still tense, she knew he would surely be thinking about Kensuke right now, she knew she would have to talk to him another time about it, but right now she wanted to enjoy the moment that had passed, a moment she had so longed for in the past.
Shinji blinked as he came back to the real world, pushing this image away from his mind to enjoy the moment, but it would surely bother him in the future, he felt a fear take over him at this moment, Shinji thought about what she was doing in this village, especially with Kensuke hitting on her, thinking about Asuka's feelings he decided to ask, even though he knew he might hate the answer.
"Were you happy in village 3?"
"No... there always seemed to be something missing." She said as she hugged Shinji's body tightly, she hoped he would understand her point, but for Shinji it didn't help much, he was still thinking about Kensuke hugging his Asuka, he wanted to punch his friend, he felt like he had been betrayed by his friend, calmly he hugged Asuka as he closed his eyes and let her scent flood his system, he was going to enjoy this moment.
"It's kind of funny to think about now, we used to live on very little, we planted a lot and even Ayanami helped out, she used to plant rice when she spent time in the village and now everything's back to normal it's kind of funny to think about what we had to do for a living." She would never admit it to Mari or anyone else, but it was true, she missed it.
Shinji laughed at the thought of Rei wearing a farmer's outfit planting rice, it even helped clear his mind of the jealousy he felt at the moment, looking down at the thought of Asuka dressed as a farmer, he calmly asked.
"It's kind of hard to imagine you growing rice." He said with a slight smile on his face, Asuka raised her head and looked at the man with a dangerous look on her face, how could he believe that she wouldn't be able to plant something and Ayanami would?
Shinji realized this as he continued speaking, his voice controlled as he continued.
"What? It's true, I remember well that you didn't even have the patience to try to cook."
Asuka slowly smiled at that, at least he remembered the past they both had, sitting down on the sofa she looked at him as he laughed.
"It's true, I didn't have the patience to stick the plants in the wet earth, that wasn't for me." Shinji looked at the beauty of Asuka's body, but he quickly touched his face as he thought about everything that had happened, especially the eye patch she was wearing.
"I'm sorry." He says calmly as he focuses his eyes on Asuka's face, that was one of his biggest regrets, Asuka looked at him as she got angry.
"What are you sorry for now?"
Shinji looked at Asuka as he saw her irritated, his mind remembering everything that happened on the fateful day of Unit 03's activation.
"For putting the brakes on that day, for not doing anything when you needed me... I'm sorry." Shinji spoke dejectedly as he looked at Asuka's back, she touched her face, for years she had thought about this and for years she had hated Shinji for not doing anything and for many years Mari had tried to calm him down, closing her eyes knowing that now was the time to close this subject.
"Why did you crash that day?"
Shinji sat on the sofa next to Asuka, both of them staring at the floor of the house as they remained silent, Asuka always thought he hated her for not doing anything that day.
"I... I didn't... I didn't want to hurt you, when I heard that the angel had possessed your unit, everyone told me to attack and I couldn't, because I knew it would hurt you." Shinji explained with pain in his voice, he didn't want to remember that day, but Asuka deserved to know.
Asuka looked at Shinji as she listened to him speak, she had read the report about it when WILLE got some information, but she wanted to hear it from him, but she remembered all too well the feeling of her body being destroyed by the hands of unit 01.
"When my father ordered the activation of the dummy system, I no longer had any control."
Asuka looked at Shinji when she heard this, this detail was not in the reports she had read.
"What?"
Shinji glanced at Asuka at the thought, but calmly asked.
"Dummy system? Didn't you know that?"
"No." Asuka spoke confusedly as she thought of what that would be, looking down she thought of Akagi, she had always been the mastermind behind all the EVAs, then Shinji spoke again.
"Do you know what the Dummy system is?"
"What is that shit?" Asuka asked getting annoyed, but already very annoyed about what it could be, Shinji spoke up quickly.
"From what I understand, this dummy system was a kind of autopilot, a system designed to replace pilots." Shinji explained calmly, but judging by Asuka's reactions she hated to hear it.
"Replacing us!?" She said annoyed, but it all made sense in her mind, especially some of the functions the EVAs gained after a few battles, she was just a tool.
"When they activated that thing I lost control of my EVA, I couldn't control anything anymore, but I could see and feel." Shinji says as he looks at his hands, it was like he still had blood on them.
Asuka smiled, finally understanding the points, really all this shit made sense, the erratic behavior of unit 01 in the reports, knowing that she had been manipulated all her life, she wiped the sweat from her face as she laughed even more, Shinji looked at her seeing her laughing without understanding.
But he felt a weight come off his shoulders at the thought of it.
"Ahahaha... what the fuck!... That bitch..." Asuka spoke angrily, then she looked at Shinji when she saw him looking at her face, and calmly spoke, but she was upset.
"It's okay... It's okay, you don't have to think about it anymore." She said as she tapped his leg, trying to look cheerful and better, but she was angry inside.
"At least that explains a lot."
"What do you mean?" Shinji said as he sipped his water. He was curious to think what Asuka was talking about, but at least he was reassured that she had at least said how she felt.
Getting up and looking around, Asuka didn't even care that she was naked as she searched for her clothes, but she was too irritated to find any. Heading for the kitchen, she wasted no time in opening her fridge and grabbing a beer.
Shinji watched her with an amused look on his face, he could see that she was really angry, but seeing her release her feelings was amusing somehow.
Taking the can in one gulp, she spoke angrily as she remembered.
"Damn, I've become Misato." She says as she finally finds one of her outfits, still looking at Shinji sitting on the sofa and blushing as she finally sees his state.
"Will you put some clothes on for God's sake!"
"Why?" Shinji said amusedly, and Asuka gave him an amused smile as she spoke.
"But he's such a pervert! I always knew it!" She says as she throws the empty can in his direction, at least having a moment of fun after so much.
(*)
Misato again found herself looking into Kaworu's special cell, she could see him sitting on the bed, his face still a downcast look, touching his face as he thought about everything Shinji had asked of him, she was in doubt in her mind, part of it said to kill this freak who had once caused the second impact, but another wanted to listen to Shinji, did Kaworu deserve to live or die? Would an angel have the privilege of being among us?
Touching her face again, Misato wanted to have those answers, and Ritsuko appeared beside her.
"His tests came back, according to the MAGIs the angels aren't very different from us, their DNA is 98% compatible with ours." She says as she smokes her cigarette, Misato not even moving next to her.
"That's intriguing."
"So these freaks are almost human?" Misato asked with her arms crossed, Ritsuko quickly answered.
"Yes, we can say that, his internal structure is similar to ours, his blood is composed of pure LCL, so he has no scars or any other lesions." Says the doctor as she finishes smoking, looking at her watch.
"I have to find Maya, I need to see if the EVAs have any signs of contamination after the last attack."
"I'll meet you on the bridge." Misato spoke without even removing her eyes from the angel, slowly the sound of Ritsuko's footsteps were lost in this sector, ready to leave she stopped when she heard something.
"Why don't you ask me what you want? Colonel." Kaworu spoke without even giving himself the decency to look up, he could feel Misato's AT field from where he was, this room was mere formality, he could leave whenever he wanted, but that would result in Shinji completely losing confidence in him, feeling his choker getting tighter as he became slightly irritated.
Misato clenched her hands as she heard this, and turning back to the glass, she spoke with restrained anger.
"What do you want angel? Do you think I don't know that I could leave this room at any time?"
Kaworu smiled as he stood up, turned and looked at the woman on the other side of the glass, he was making a lot of effort to improve his image because of Shinji.
"I could, but that would make him sad." Kaworu said as he thought of Shinji, Misato frowned at the thought, Shinji begged for this angel's life, taking a deep breath she tried to calm down.
"Why? Why do you care so much about Shinji?" Misato asked curiously as she thought about it.
"Why are you manipulating him?
"I don't manipulate him, I really care about him." Kaworu spoke as he stopped in front of the thick glass, mere centimeters separating them. Misato didn't look away for a second, a part of her was bothered by this. Kaworu smiled when he saw Misato's anger at him, and with venom he continued.
"What is it, Colonel? Angry that I didn't intend to betray you like you did?"
Misato clenched her hands even tighter, who was this angel to say that? Feeling her guilt screaming through her past with Shinji, she angrily retorted.
"And when I cheat on him!"
Kaworu laughed as he heard this, brushing a hair out of his face he spoke, not flinching in the slightest at Misato's tone, glancing briefly at his feet, he spoke.
"Where should we start? The third impact..." Kaworu said smiling as he saw Misato getting tense, still not bothered by anything he continued talking.
"When Shinji fought my brothers he accidentally started the great ritual, but that's not what I remember, I remember hearing everyone encouraging him to continue, especially you." He said quietly as he spoke, his perfect memory coming back, Misato clenched her hands even tighter, not wanting to remember that day.
"When he woke up everyone looked at him like a monster and a murderer and you didn't even care, you even threatened him with the choker..." He stopped talking, becoming arrogantly confident.
"We didn't know it would be Shinji, any monster using his appearance could have come back." Misato defended herself as best she could, her only excuse for the moment in question, Kaworu nodded in disbelief.
"And after you found out you were Shinji? What did you do?"
Misato looked down, she hadn't thought about it, she had kept him in the cell thinking about what she would do if everything had gone well, but fate had something else in store. Kaworu used this to get the upper hand in the argument.
"He didn't think he was innocent for a second, only his position was worth anything, he would use anything to get his revenge, even if it meant making an innocent man suffer."
"That's not true!" Misato slammed her hand against the glass wall, Kaworu wasn't even intimidated by this, his face still sporting his annoying smile. Misato spoke still strongly annoyed.
"I'm not a monster like you! I had a plan for Shinji but it all went wrong and you know very well what happened after that!" Misato calmed down at the thought of Shinji fighting against everyone to restore the world to its original form.
"Do you think I don't blame myself for everything ending like this? After he restored the world I felt even guiltier, I feel guilty to this day and I don't hide it from anyone who wants to know." Kaworu could see that she was telling the truth, but he waited calmly.
"I hope one day that Shinji can forgive me in the future, but that's between me and him, not you."
"And please keep your mouth shut because you're only alive because I let you, especially after Shinji begged me to, so think carefully before you provoke someone, angel." Misato threatened in all seriousness, Kaworu knew this, he knew that Misato had always hated his kind, he wasn't afraid of dying, but he was afraid of upsetting Shinji.
"Why do you hate me so much Colonel?"
Misato blinked when she heard that. She quickly thought back to her past, especially the second impact.
"Your race wants the end of us, so that's basically it."
"No... that's the standard answer, what's really the reason Colonel?" Kaworu spoke calmly, but his eyes never left Misato's, he could sense that this excuse alone was a lie, the anger was directed at him, not just his race.
Knowing where this was going, Misato looked away as she remembered her troubled past, not giving in she turned and left him alone behind, remembering the second and third impact didn't do her any good, Kaworu wasn't smiling as he watched Misato leave the room, he knew he had hit a nerve, Calmly he sat back down on the bed, even though he didn't mind the strong red light above him and the hum of the machines around him, but his mind focused on his brother, especially the next angel who was nearby and he couldn't help inside this room.
