"Good morning. Flowers arrived for Detective Burgess this morning. Should I leave them on her desk?" Platt asked as she sat them down. "Yeah we will make sure she gets them." Al looked around the room at the team. Platt left again while Adam stared at the vase on Kim's desk. "Lilles are an interesting choice. Good job Adam." Antonio figures it was from him. "Not from me." Adam left the room bowing his head. "God I feel bad for him!" Jay looked over at the man sulking in the break room. "We don't know anything! It could be innocent!" Erin glared at them. "Lilles have meaning behind them, feeling of cloud nine when around that person." Kevin stated looking at his phone.
"They are also my favorite flower. They are poisonous to cats. And the flower that represents May birthdays. Now if you will excuse me I see someone who needs a bit of reassurance." Kim dropped her bag at her desk and walked towards Adam. She closed the door behind her, locking it before closing the blinds. She wouldn't have them spying on a private conversation. Kim walked straight towards him pushing him back against the couch before she straddled his lap. "Woah what are you doing?" Adam was shocked and concerned. "Seems like we need to talk. And seems like we need to do this face to face." She watched him raise his head.
"Good now that I have your full attention. I'm not cheating on you and never will. I know you were cheated on in the past." Kim watched his eyes go wide. "You didn't have to tell me, I knew. We both have things we need to work on and I can imagine you would rather keep that part buried but that's not gonna help. I can tell you with out a doubt in my mind I wouldn't have let you near my home or my kids if I wasn't sure you were a good person and that I was interested in you. And I sure as hell wouldn't have allowed you in my bed if I didn't see this going somewhere. You are the only person since Paul that I allowed to touch me that way. Now I'm going to tell you one more thing and then we will go read the card together. Everyday, no matter how much it scares me, I'm falling for you more and more." Kim grabbed his face bringing her lips to his.
He was totally taken aback by her confession but it had awoken his mind, heart and body. He kissed her hard and gave as good as he got. It was crazy hot but much needed in the moment. "I'm falling for you too. I have since I first saw you. As for me being cheated on we can talk about it later. Let's go read that card." Kim got up from his lap and held out her hand. He needed a moment to calm his body before they left the room. So he made himself a coffee and her a tea. When they left the room hand in hand the team barely looked up. Kim took the card from the flowers and handed it right to Adam.
He read it aloud for the room to hear. 'Kim. I know today is a day you probably wish would pass by without notice. But I can't allow my best friend and the mother of my niece and nephew to do that. So tonight I want you to celebrate your 31st birthday by partying like a rock star, you know what I mean. Forget about the past and live in the moment. You deserve it! Never let the memory of your 30th birthday hold you back from enjoying the life you deserve. I love ya girl. Michael.'
"Kim is he saying that Paul beat you and tried to rape you on your birthday? And that today is not only your birthday but the anniversary of that tragic day?" Adam stood shocked almost shaking clenching the card in his hand. "Yes to all of that. So Lillie's are my favorite flower for real. I couldn't have them for years because I owned a cat for 17 years who passed away in 2019. And they are for real May birth flower. Hence why he chose these for me today." Kim shrugged knowing it was all very clear to everyone in the room. "God I am so sorry I ever doubted you. I let my past cloud my judgement. Please forgive me." Adam hugged her tight with everyone watching. "Nothing to forgive! I know how it looks and I get where you've been. So we're good." Kim pulled away from the hug to get her day started.
"Well you heard the lady we have a case! I will let Will Halstead fill you all in." Voight announced reveling the doctor who Kim briefly met when she broke her arm. "Hey everyone, hey bro! Alright so I'm not what's really going on but we have had a ton of men coming in reporting blacking out and being robbed. They all had white bumps in their mouths afterwards. Nothing popped on the toxicology screens though. Thought maybe it's something new going around. Hence why I brought it to you." Will finished looking around for questions.
"Have any women presented with the same symptoms?" Erin asked writing the information on the white board. "Not that I'm aware of." Will answered. "Do the toxicology reports include something for sea sickness?" Kim asked getting confused looks from around the room. "No just the major narcotics. Why?" Will could see there was more. Everyone could. "So Scopolamine is used by hookers to trick role their johns. It's fast acting, knocks them out and leaves them with a hang over and no memory of the night before. It also leaves those white bumps in the mouth. The only real downside is that depending on how the drug is administrated it can effect the hooker as well. Just takes a bit longer." Kim finished seeing Will shocked.
"So how do they get the Johns to take it?" Voight asked. "Well in a drink but it takes longer to work and would require the hooker to do more with the John before she could rob him. The easiest way would be skin to mouth contact. For example the women heads to the bathroom to freshen up a bit. We can video footage to find them." Voight got the names of the men who were drugged and the team split up going to different hotels to get the camera footage. "Well this has been an interesting day?" Kevin stated as he drove. "Yeah but it's not like this should come as a surprise to anyone. I've been very open about my life. And Adam of all people should have known I'm not a cheater. I wouldn't even kiss him till my marriage was officially, legally over. But I get that he's been screwed over. Who hasn't at same point. We will get through it." Kim stared out the window not wanting to see the look on Kevin's face.
"It was bad! He was happy when she left, he realized he was better off. Then he found out about the cheating and it hurt him, horribly. We were there for him when he fell apart. We are just protective over him. And we weren't fair to you in the process. Not everyone was against you." Kevin admitted. "Good I'm glad! Especially since I did nothing wrong. Conclusions were made, more jumped to. Just remember this for the future." Kim was more than happy to get to the hotel to get the videos then needed.
"Did you really think she was cheating on you kid?" Al was a little surprised at how Adam reacted this morning. "I guess I had doubts. After Wendy I guarded my heart but Kim broke that down on day one. I feel bad about it now but in that moment I just doubted. Maybe if I had known it was her birthday I wouldn't have but she didn't tell me. I get why now. But I still wish I had known." Adam hung his head in shame of how he handled it. He all of a sudden had an idea. He texted Jay right away knowing Erin was driving. But he needed Erin's help.
"Jay I need Erin's help but I know she's driving. I want to take Kim out for dinner but I was hoping we could have drinks and a cake at Molly's on the patio. Can you help make that happen?" Adam asked Jay to ask Erin. "Hey we will talk about it and get back to you. And of course she's driving. I will get back to you soon." Jay replied quickly. "Perfect! I want to keep it on the down low." Adam wanted to make sure they knew that. Now he needed to find the perfect place for dinner. As they arrived at the hotel they went inside to get the footage they needed.
They all met up back at the district where they all went over the footage together. There was a lot of footage so leaving it to just Mouse wasn't fair and would take too long. Adam headed to the restroom to send another text, this time to April getting help with taking Kim out for the night. "So I just found out it's Kim's birthday. And I found out the incident happened on this day last year. I want to take her out for the night. Can you help me?" He made sure no one was watching him. "Absolutely! I want her to enjoy the night. She needs it. So before I grab the kids from school I will drop off an outfit for her to wear tonight. And keep me posted of she's not coming home at all." April hoped Kim finally gave in and let herself feel everything she's been missing. Adam answered with a wink face emoji before returning to the video feed.
"I have this women coming out of the victims room. Anyone else have this same girl?" Antonio asked. They all looked at the screen. "I saw her in the elevator feed but the camera on the hallway didn't catch her face." Jay added. "Um I found her on an elevator cam too." Erin pointed to her screen. "Okay let's find this women! She's our main suspect." Voight ordered. The photo being run through fascial rec. and they waited as it scanned all the data bases. "Hey Kim can I talk to you for a second?" Adam pointed to the hallway. "Yeah of course." Kim followed him in to the hallway and a bit away from the group.
"So I was hoping that I could take you out to dinner tonight. More like I made it possible for you to come to dinner with me tonight. I just want you to say yes." He held her hands making sure he could see in her eyes. "Sounds like a good plan. It would be nice to enjoy dinner together just the two of us." Kim smiled looking into his eyes. "We need to head back before we start kissing again." Adam lead her back to the technology room while Kim chuckled a bit. Adam nodded at Erin to let her know they were on for the night.
"Alright we got a name to go with the face. Samantha Mason. Let's find her and get her off the streets." Voight gave the orders and they were all off to find her. It wasn't that hard, she was on her usual corner but she ran. Pretty typical but she was in high heals so running fast wasn't happening. The boys caught her quick and she was arrested and transported to lock up. They soon found out she was an addict and the fear of withdrawal in a holding cell caused her to give up her pimp. After her pimp was in custody as well they were let go for the night. "Kim this was dropped off for you for tonight." Adam handed her a bag. She shook her head drinking madly as she headed to the locker room.
"So she's gone. I ordered a small cake and everyone promised to be there by 8:30. It's a small party so I didn't rent out the place just rented out part of it large enough to be comfortable and enjoy." Erin was careful not to be to loud in case Kim was close. "Thank you for the help! I appreciate it! Now I just need to keep her out till then. That's the kids bed time so I need to keep her mind off them for a bit." Adam watched as she came back in to the room. "I will be right back. I'm just gonna change quickly." Adam kissed her forehead before heading to change. He returned quickly so they headed out.
"So how are you feeling about today?" He asked holding her hand as he drove. "Um this morning was rough. Had a nightmare about that night but I feel okay. A year of learning how to live again, a year of trying to figure out how to move forward. It's crazy how one night, one mistake can change your life so much. But in some sick way I'm grateful cause I can be me again. I can be with my friends and do the things I like again without feeling scared or guilty. It's kind of refreshing. A confidence I lost has been coming back slowly. I know that it makes me a better mom but also a better cop and better partner." Kim looked over at Adam knowing they still had something very important to talk about.
"At dinner we will talk about the cheating issue, I promise." Adam stated as they drove towards the restaurant. "Perfect. I will like to hear the story even though I assume it's pretty ugly." She replied as he continued to drive. "Yeah it was horrible. Not nearly as bad as what you went through though." Adam continued to watch the road. "Trauma is trauma Adam. Doesn't matter what it is, it's all horrible. Just know I support you through this and everything else." Kim squeezed his hand. "Thank you." Adam smiled sadly thinking about the past. They arrived at the restaurant he had chosen, Nobu. "Oh seafood! It's perfect!" Kim smiled wide.
"Thought as an east coaster you would appreciate fresh seafood." He smiled leading her to the door. They were led to a table towards the center of the restaurant. It was quiet but bright and full of diners. They ordered drinks while they looked over the menu deciding what to have for dinner. After they ordered Adam decided it was time to open up. "So um I guess it's time. So I was in the academy when I met her, Wendy. Her brother was a good friend of mine. We met and hit it off. Our first date was a movie, transformers. We eventually moved in together and were even engaged. I uh get pulled from the academy to work an undercover assignment in Intelligence. That first day a Detective didn't make it home, Jules was killed on the job. Anyway I chose not to tell Wendy about Intelligence. I told her I got pulled to do paperwork at the Ivory Tower. I didn't want her to worry." Adam sat back for a minute thinking.
"On a case we were all watching a house, waiting to see if someone was home. A guy approached the house and was shot through the door. Al and I were first through the door. Shots were fired and we returned fire. I hit the suspect. Jay yelled at me to put pressure on the wound so he didn't bleed out. I had no clue we were supposed to do that. Anyway I was at my engagement party when I got the call the guy died. I told her the truth in that moment. She thought I was kidding. It was maybe two months later she showed up at the district. Platt called me down. Wendy broke up with me in the commanders office. Said I changed and I had but it was for the better." He stopped again as their meals arrived.
"So several weeks went by with no contact and I was doing well. Again she came to the district to find me. I had moved out of our place and didn't tell her where I moved to. She confessed she was pregnant but didn't know who the father was. She asked me to do a DNA test. I was angry, hurt, sick to my stomach. I went right to Med and had the test done. The whole week while I waited for the results I was drunk. I got into a few fights but the team got me through it." Adam stopped talking again. Kim thought he was done.
"What were the results?" Kim asked afraid of the answer. "Not mine. Truthfully I was relieved. I want kids, I really do. I just don't want her to be their mother. Honestly I'm not sure I wanted to be engaged to her either. I felt pressured by her to do it. None of it was right. The longer she was gone the happier I got. The more things made sense again. I'm glad she dumped me otherwise I might be raising a baby with a women who cheated on me. Me being a douche to her actually saved me." Adam trailed off again. This time Kim was sure he was done talking.
"Have you heard from her since?" Kim was curious. "Nope. When I texted her after the results I told her to never contact me again. I blocked her from my phone. A few months back she dropped a letter off at the district, Platt was the one who took the letter. As soon as she to,d me about the letter I told her to shred it. I don't want to know whatever she's got to say." Adam shrugged it off. He never wanted to think of her anymore.
"Well if she comes back around we will face it together." Kim smiled wanting him to know she was there for him to. "Thank you but tonight it about celebrating you and your birthday. So let's just focus on the positive in life. We are working towards something amazing. You have two adorable children who I adore. We both have jobs we love. And you are free to do whatever you want now. No more hiding who you are to fit into a mold to make someone happy." Adam was happy about the life she was creating for herself again. It was beautiful to watch.
"God I love being free again. Of course I have my kids, my job, you. But I'm free to just be me. I love that you don't mind me horseback riding. I love that you don't mind me just chilling with my kids. I love that encourage me to be myself. I truly appreciate that." Kim squeezed his hand letting him know how much she means it. "You can do whatever you want as long as you make time for me too. I'm good. I really like watching you becoming who you really are again. And I know we will have rough times but as long as we face it together we will get there, together." They had talked all through dinner. They both felt lighter knowing what Adam had been hiding. Maybe not hiding just acting like it doesn't bothering him when it does.
Adam paid the bill for their dinner and they headed out. "Alright next stop!" Adam headed towards Molly's. He already received a message that they were all there and the cake was there too. "Another stop? It's almost bed time for the kids." Kim was nervous about not being there for them. "Nope! April has it covered tonight. I only have to let her know if you are coming home at all tonight." Adam laughed at her shocked face. "Damn her! Alright let's do this." Kim chuckled knowing that they conspired behind her back.
They arrived at the next location. Adam decided to surprise her so he covered her eyes as they walked closer. They entered the bar but everyone knew not to say anything to them. Not to give away where they are. They weaves through the bar to the back patio. As he got her back there took a minute to make sure everyone was in place. "Ready darling?" He whispered in her ear. Kim nodded and he uncovered her eyes. "Surprise!" The team yelled out startling Kim who was in shock. "Oh My God! You guys! This is amazing! Thank you all!" Kim cried happy tears at the thoughtfulness of her team.
Each came to hug her and wish her a happy birthday. Drinks were served as was the cake. Kim was laughing the whole time. Enjoying her time with the team. Adam took lots of photos of her as she just enjoyed her life. She truly looked alive. He rarely saw her this happy in the short time they have known each other. But watching her be the life of the party, enjoying herself made him incredibly happy. "You did good Ruz. She's beyond happy!" Jay and Kevin stood talking to him while he watched Kim. "Yeah. She's also a little wasted. But she looks truly happy. It turned out to be a perfect day." Adam watched her as she took another drink but he wasn't concerned. He would make sure she was safe.
They had stayed for several hours before the team started to leave. Adam had switched to water two hours ago so we was sober to drive home. Kim though was wasted. He had started her on water but it hadn't helped too much yet. "Ready to head out?" Adam held her tight making sure she didn't fall. "Yes but I need pancakes!" Kim giggled loudly. "Pancakes? Um okay. Let's get some pancakes." Adam laughed watching her cheer. It was already midnight so he had to find a diner close by that was open all night. As they walked in he noticed all the drunks getting pancakes and wondered how he didn't know this was a thing. "So I guess I get the party like a rock star thing. Did you do this often?" He asked watching her swaying to the music in her seat.
"Yeah! 3am was the going home time many a night. It was truly insane!" Kim giggled as she ordered her pancakes and tea. "You have much to teach me then." Adam just laughed watching her beam with happiness. They ate pretty much in silence. He had texted April to say he thought taking her home to his place was best since she was so drunk. April had agreed right away. The kids didn't need to see that after the incident with their father. They finished their food and Kim looked surprisingly more sober. Adam still helped her into the car and made sure she was buckled in before taking her to his place.
When they pulled up Kim looked excited almost giddy. He parked the car and got out ready to help her out but she was already opening the door and jumping out. "Woah hold up. Take it easy there." He made sure she was steady as they started to walk. "Oh please this is nothing! I'm not that bad!" Kim broke free and twirled in the street proving she was okay. "Okay little miss tipsy. Let's get you inside." He shook his head but had a smile on all the same. They entered the elevator and just as the doors closed Kim pushed Adam against the wall and started making out with him. He was shocked at first but went with it. He wouldn't let it get too far.
They pulled apart as the doors opened and moved to his apartment. Once inside the make out session was back on. Kim pushed up against the door as it closed. "Kim your drunk we are not doing this when your drunk." Adam tried to cool things off. "Tipsy Yes, drunk no. And yes we can do this if it's what you want." The did a biopsy and determined it was benign but it still needed to be removed. So the scar is from the removal. It was a big scare. Who would I leave me kids with. Paul didn't really care about them but he was their dad. I was out of my mind but it turned out okay." Kim watched the concern clear from his eyes.
"Will it happen again?" He asked knowing he wanted kids in the future. "It could. No way to know for sure. It was caused by the excess of hormones in my body. But to be safe I started getting mammograms already just in case. I have had two and both were clear. Extremely dense but clear." Kim hoped that made him feel better about things. "I'm glad everything is okay and no sign of cancer that makes me feel better. Finding that scar was kind of scary. I'm not going to lie about that." Adam ran his fingers over the scar. "Trust me I get that. It scares me too. That's why I pay out of pocket for the mammogram. It's not covered by insurance till I'm 40. But I do it anyway." Kim smiled up at him.
"You ready to sleep?" Adam asked as she had her head laying on his chest. "No. Just enjoying this. Enjoying you." Kim snuggled her body closer. "I want to hold you closer too so how about round two and a different position?" Adam watched her eyes light up a bit. "I will take that as a yes."
