INT./EXT. HILL HOUSE - MORNING
The scene opens to show a messy bedroom. Clothes and comic books are scattered across the room. Some comics are on a desk with a Walkman as well. A shelf is shown with a stereo setup along with rows of cassettes. Led Zeppelin and Ramones posters can be seen on the opposite wall. On another wall is a calendar with the date June 1991. On the 23rd "15th!" is scribbled in blue marker. A barely made bed is next to an open window. The camera pans outside to show a house in a suburban neighborhood in the early morning. A teenage boy is seen sitting down on the roof next to said window. His white gloves, green eyes and spiked back blue hair are very distinct.
SONIC (V.O.)
What am I even doing here? I'm
supposed to be exploring the world.
Instead I'm stuck in school. What
am I supposed to be doing for the
rest of my life? I could be out
there in the world, being like all
the heroes. There's a war out there
and no one on South Island realizes
what's coming. People are scarred
but I'm not. I have the power to
help them when no one else is.
That's what my idols would want me
to do. But I can't because I'm
apparently too young. I hate having
to just use my powers for myself
instead of others. I just wish I
could feel like a normal person. Or
is that how I want the world to
feel?
He lets out a deep sigh, gets up and crawls back through the window and partially closes it. He walks across his bedroom to grab a blue hoodie and backpack sitting by the door. As Sonic leaves his room a heavy Rock drumbeat can be heard in another room. An older teenage girl with with long purple hair comes up to another door and bangs on it.
SONIA
Quit it Manic! It's seven in the
morning!
She looks over to spot her other younger brother.
SONIA (CONT'D)
There's the birthday boy!
She picks him up and hugs him.
SONIA (CONT'D)
I can't believe you're 15 already!
SONIC
Yeah, I don't believe it either.
She puts him down and they both walk downstairs with Manic now just behind them. In the living room a middle aged couple are there.
JAX
There you are kiddo!
Jax takes a blank box and hands it to Sonic. He opens it to find a pair of red running shoes with a white stripe down the middle and a gold buckle on the side.
ALEENA
Your father wasn't quite sure what
to get you this year.
Sonic puts on his new shoes.
SONIC
These are rad! Thanks mom and dad!
Jax and Aleena both smile.
INT. HIGH SCHOOL - DAY
A bell rings and in the empty hallway Sonic jumps out of a classroom. He runs and jumps toward a stairwell.
TEACHER
No running in the halls Mr. Hill!
SONIC
Yeah, like you can stop me!
He grabs the railing, flips over it and drops down to the floor bellow. Sonic runs across another hallway and leaps into the school cafeteria.
SONIC (CONT'D)
And the hedgehog makes it in record time!
A girl with brown hair wearing a blue vest is reading a newspaper at a nearby table. Sonic slides in next to her.
SONIC (CONT'D)
So Ms. Acorn, What's the plan?
SALLY
I have to help Nicole later but you
can take me out backstage tomorrow
night.
SONIC
Cute. I can make time after the
show. So where are we heading?
SALLY
The choice is yours Mr. Rockstar.
We could go to the movies, the
record shop, a cafe, anything you
want.
SONIC
There's this really great ice cream
shop down in the city. Me and the
guys went there once.
SALLY
What's your favorite flavor anyway?
SONIC
I typically like to have chocolate
with nuts and sprinkles on top like
a certain girl next door.
Sally smiles and giggles.
SALLY
Well I guess that settles it. Don't
forget about how far away downtown
is young man. How is a princess
like me supposed to get there?
SONIC
I guess I just have to carry you.
She leans forward and kisses him. Two other boys including Sonia come in shortly after. They sit down at the table with them.
SALLY
Hey, check this out.
Sally throws the newspaper on the table. The front page headline reads "Team Chaotix rescue". The photograph on the page features a trio of young males. A humanoid Chameleon, Crocodile and Bee. Sally looks over to them.
SALLY (CONT'D)
So which one is your favorite?
She pushes the paper closer towards the rest of the group.
SONIA
I really like Espio.
ROTOR
Like? We all know you have this
huge crush on him.
SONIA
What? No way! Have you seen what he
can do? Imagine being able to sneak
up on anyone. The Doc never knows
what's coming.
ROTOR
And also because he's purple like
you. Seriously, sometimes you never
shut up about how 'dreamy' he is.
Sonic tries his hardest to keep a poker face. Sally leans over and reaches down. She slips something into Sonic's backpack.
SALLY
A lot of people like Vector and I
do too. Everyone knows about how
strong he is but no one recognizes
how smart he is. There is a reason
why the Chaotix is known as a rebel
group and detectives. If you need
anyone for the job it's them.
ROTOR
But did you see why they helped?
The Doctor launched another attack.
This time on East Side. I feel like
South Island is next.
SALLY
Yeah, my parents were just talking
about it. It's everywhere now. I
can't believe this huge thing is
just happening and no one cares
about it.
SONIA
I'm glad that at least with the
Chaotix someone cares about the
people being hurt. Some of those
robots look nasty.
After a brief silence someone else speaks up.
ANTOINE
Personally I think all of you have
it wrong. Charmy Bee redefines what
it means to be a hero. Charmy is a
role model to the youth. He
represents a rebel. Someone who
fights for freedom despite his age,
skills and disapproval from others.
Charmy doesn't just help fight the
Empire, he also chooses to help the
common man like Vector. Some are
afraid to fight and the Chaotix
makes people less scarred. Some
might not like it but we should all
strive to be just like Charmy Bee.
The rest of the group looks annoyed at Antoine. Everyone except Sonic.
ROTOR
Listen Antoine, I get your point,
but, Charmy is a little young and
immature to be taken seriously.
Isn't he about our age? Hey Sonic.
How do you feel about all this?
SONIC
Oh! Uh, I like all of them because
I see myself in all of them. But I
do think I like Espio just a little
more.
SALLY
Typical.
SONIC
Well I should get going. I have a
test next period.
Just before he gets up Sally grabs him by the arm and kisses him on the cheek. Sonic leaves and walks through the hallway.
SONIC (CONT'D)
Glad that's over. I don't care what
they think. I'll show them one day.
EXT. FOREST - DAY
The background of a lush green forest is disturbed by the rapid rustling of leaves. Sonic is running, jumping and doing parkour tricks. He exercises his superhuman speed and careful agility across rocks and around trees.
SONIC (V.O.)
Man, It's always a blast to be out
here. I mean, no one's ever out
here. It's just so quiet, except
for me of course. I think I finish
my homework as fast as I can run
sometimes just so I can feel the
rush out here. How long have I been
out for? Mom and dad know I can
handle myself, but they still want
me home before it gets too late.
What time is it anyway? Five? Six?
Sonic leaps off a rock, spins in midair and grabs a tree branch. He spins around it and hangs upside down. He observes his surroundings.
SONIC
Hey, That's odd.
He drops and lands on his feet. He uncovers a red glimmer from the shrubbery. Sonic picks up a red diamond-shaped gemstone the size of his hand.
SONIC (CONT'D)
What and why is this here? Huh? Do
I like, feel something? And not
like physically either. Like
something greater.
He lets out a cry of shock as the world around him breaks away. The background becomes distorted and psychedelic. A three-dimensional maze begins to form around him.
SONIC (CONT'D)
What the heck?!
The gem leaves his hand and retreats deep into the maze.
SONIC (CONT'D)
Fine! Be that way!
Sonic is floating and spinning in midair but not falling. He manages to grip a wall of the maze.
SONIC (CONT'D)
Alight. I'll play your game!
He leaps off the wall and uses his skilled acrobatics to traverse the maze spinning and turning every which way.
SONIC (CONT'D)
There it is! I see it!
He jumps into the center of the maze and grabs the gem.
SONIC (CONT'D)
You can't hide from me!
Reality begins to reform with the red crystal resecured. Sonic stands in the same spot rubbing his eyes and head.
SONIC (CONT'D)
Wow. Is that how Syd felt all the
time? So you're not some ordinary
rock huh? I don't get it. It's like
I can feel you. You want me to go
somewhere. Is that it?
He goes off and traverses to the edge of the forest.
EXT. ROLLING PLAINS - LATER
Now outside the forest, Sonic runs at breakneck pace across South Island's Green Hills.
SONIC
Oh, Is this where you want me to
go?
He slows down and perches atop a taller hill. Sonic leans over and looks down the sharp incline. He sees a small group of unique looking robots down bellow.
SONIC (V.O.)
Whoa. Is that them? The robots that
belong to the Empire? Sure looks
like it. Sonia was right. Those
things do look nasty. Not like
anything I should be able to
handle!
He does a flip and drops down in front of the robots and they immediately engage him.
SONIC
Bring it on you hunk of Junk!
Many of the robots are about two thirds the size of the humanoid hedgehog. Sonic kicks a crab robot into the wall in front of him. A ladybug one on a wheel charges up behind him and Sonic flips over onto it. He jumps up to a wasp robot flying in the air and smashes it into the ground.
SONIC (CONT'D)
C'mon! Is that all you got!
A chameleon robot appears on the wall. Sonic grabs the rolling robot, lifts it over his head and throws it at the one on the wall.
SONIC (CONT'D)
I'll give it to the Doc on one
account. These robot designs are
super cool.
The damaged crab-bot tries to attack. Sonic picks it up overhis head and tears it in half with his super strength.
SONIC (CONT'D)
Phew! You guys aren't so tough!
Nothing this Hedgehog can't handle!
He runs off further down the plains. A few robots are scattered across the hills and Sonic dispatches them as he runs past.
SONIC (CONT'D)
The Emerald is telling me I'm
getting close now.
From across the hills a large hoard of robots comes into view and Sonic speeds up towards it.
SONIC (CONT'D)
Something tells me I have an
appointment to make with the
Doctor.
Before Sonic gets there the camera cuts to the hoard. The Doctor is sitting in a hovering vehicle looking out to his robotic army.
DR. ROBOTNIK
If everything goes according to
plan, my minions should take over
Starlight and and the city will be
mine by morning. All of South
Island under my control by next
week.
SONIC
Hey look! It's a giant talking egg!
DR. ROBOTNIK
Who dares disturb my monologue?
Huh? A child!
SONIC
You look new around here. May I be
of any assistance as a tour guide?
DR. ROBOTNIK
Scram! Before I make mincemeat out
of you.
SONIC
Hey, that's not how we treat the
locals around here!
DR. ROBOTNIK
I will not be mocked by a child!
Don't tell me this is one of those
mutant heroes.
Sonic bounces off a robot to reach Robotnik in the air and is about to pounce on him.
SONIC
I am so ready to make some
scrambled eggs. Ah!
Robotnik manages to punch Sonic in midair and he falls to the ground. The robots advance around him.
DR. ROBOTNIK
I'll let my badniks deal with you.
I don't have time for your
immaturity.
Sonic starts to battle Robotnik's enemies using punches and kicks in quick succession.
SONIC
Badniks huh? So those are the name
of your pets? I think if you were a
good owner you'd keep them a leash.
DR. ROBOTNIK
Enough! I am a busy man and I have
business to attend to.
Using his aerial mobile the Doctor flies away.
SONIC
And what do you mean my that?
Taking over the world is not just
something anyone does for fun!
Sonic creates enough room to start using his acrobatics.
SONIC (CONT'D)
This is nuts. There has to be at
least twenty of them here.
Sonic tears through every badnik one by one. He eventually comes out on top and looks around at the pile of broken badnik parts.
SONIC (CONT'D)
Another batch ready for the scrap
pile! Now I just have to follow the
eggman.
Sonic runs off further now towards the unknown.
