Part 2: An Unexpected Invitation

--

Scene 1: School Hallway - Afternoon

Penny catches up to Naruto, who's once again by the window, lost in thought. She takes a deep breath and gathers her courage before approaching him.

Penny: "Hey, Naruto!"

Naruto turns, his expression still that same distant one she's grown used to.

Naruto: "Hey."

Penny: (smiling) "So, I have a basketball game coming up. Thought maybe you'd want to come watch?"

Naruto raises an eyebrow, looking genuinely surprised.

Naruto: "You play basketball?"

Penny: (grinning) "Sure do! My dad's the coach, so I've been playing for a while."

Naruto shifts uncomfortably, already shaking his head.

Naruto: "I don't really do… crowds."

Penny gives him her best puppy-dog eyes, clasping her hands together in a pleading gesture.

Penny: "Oh, come on, Naruto! It'd mean a lot if you came. Please?"

Naruto sighs, scratching the back of his head, clearly not thrilled but visibly affected by her pleading gaze.

Naruto: (grumbling) "Fine… I'll go."

Penny's face lights up.

Penny: "Yes! Thanks, Naruto!"

Scene 2: Library - Evening

Meanwhile, Penny was supposed to study with her crush, Kareem, that evening, but she's at basketball practice. Kareem is sitting in the library, waiting, his eyes occasionally flicking toward the door. LaCienega, who's with Maya, spots him and smirks.

LaCienega: (whispering to Maya) "Watch this."

LaCienega strides over to where Kareem is sitting, purposely bumping into him as she walks by.

LaCienega: "Oh! Sorry, Kareem, didn't see you there."

Kareem glances up, smiling politely.

Kareem: "No problem, LaCienega."

As he notices the book in her hands, his expression softens.

Kareem: "Hey, that's my favorite book."

LaCienega: (smiling sweetly) "Really? It's my favorite, too!"

Kareem seems impressed, and as he stands up, he gestures toward the door.

Kareem: "So, are you coming in or going out?"

LaCienega: (flirting) "Going wherever you're going."

They share a laugh, and as they walk out together, Maya watches them leave, surprised but not saying anything.

Scene 3: School Cafeteria - The Next Day

The next day, Penny is chatting with her friends in the cafeteria when she notices Kareem handing LaCienega a ticket. She overhears their conversation.

Kareem: "Here you go, LaCienega. It's for my concert. Hope you can make it."

LaCienega smirks, glancing over at Penny before looking back at Kareem.

LaCienega: "Oh, I wouldn't miss it for the world."

Penny's eyes narrow as she watches the exchange, her heart sinking. LaCienega glances back at Penny, clearly enjoying her reaction.

Penny: (muttering to herself) "What's he doing?"

Kareem doesn't notice Penny, but her frustration only grows as LaCienega waves the ticket in her direction, clearly enjoying her little victory.

LaCienega: (grinning) "Guess who's going to Kareem's concert, Penny?"

Penny tries to hold it together, but as her friends call out to her, she stands up and storms out of the cafeteria, ignoring their concerned voices.

Scene 4: Ramen Shop - Evening

Feeling frustrated and betrayed, Penny heads to Naruto's job after school. She finds him wiping down tables at the ramen shop, his usual stoic expression in place. Naruto glances up as she enters, surprised to see her.

Naruto: "Penny? What are you doing here?"

Penny slumps down on a stool at the counter, sighing.

Penny: "I needed to get out of there. Everything just feels… messed up."

Naruto doesn't say anything, but he grabs a bowl and begins preparing ramen, his hands working methodically as he listens.

Naruto: "What happened?"

Penny: (sighing) "My crush… Kareem. I was supposed to study with him yesterday, but I had basketball practice. LaCienega used it as an opportunity to swoop in, and now he's invited her to his concert. She's rubbing it in my face."

Naruto doesn't respond right away, setting the ramen in front of her.

Naruto: "Sounds like you care too much about what she thinks."

Penny looks down, stirring the noodles absently.

Penny: "I know. I just… I thought he liked me, too. But maybe he didn't even notice I was gone."

Naruto leans back, crossing his arms.

Naruto: "People can be pretty shallow. You think they see you, but they don't. They only see what they want."

Penny looks up at him, surprised by the depth of his words.

Penny: "Is that why you're always alone? You don't trust people?"

Naruto shrugs, his expression unreadable.

Naruto: "Maybe. It's easier to rely on myself."

Penny: (softly) "But doesn't it get lonely?"

Naruto doesn't answer right away, gazing out the window.

Naruto: "Sometimes. But it's better than being disappointed."

They sit in silence for a moment, both of them lost in their own thoughts. Penny finally takes a bite of ramen, savoring the warmth and flavor.

Penny: "Thanks for this, Naruto. I needed it."

Naruto nods, glancing at her with a faint, almost imperceptible smile.

Naruto: "Anytime."

Scene 5: School Gym - Penny's Basketball Game

The night of Penny's basketball game, Naruto reluctantly makes his way to the gym. He's not one for loud crowds, but he keeps his word. He finds a spot near the back, keeping his head down and his hoodie up.

The game begins, and Penny's energy and determination are evident. She's a skilled player, fiercely competitive as she scores and helps her team. Naruto watches her quietly, noticing her focus and passion.

After the game, Penny catches sight of him in the stands and waves, a bright smile lighting up her face. Naruto raises a hand in acknowledgment, keeping his usual reserved expression.

Scene 6: School Hallway - The Next Day

Penny catches up to Naruto in the hallway.

Penny: "Hey, thanks for coming last night. I know it's not your thing."

Naruto: (shrugging) "You asked, so I came."

Penny: "Well, I appreciate it."

She hesitates, then glances down the hall, where she spots Kareem and LaCienega laughing together. Her expression darkens.

Penny: (sighing) "It's just… so frustrating, you know?"

Naruto: "Forget about them, Penny. Some people aren't worth your energy."

Penny looks at him, taking his words to heart.

Penny: "Yeah… maybe you're right."

For the first time, she starts to let go of her frustration, finding comfort in Naruto's words. As she walks with him down the hallway, she realizes that maybe there's more to this "loner" than she thought.
