Chapter time!

I've returned form my family trip, and now I'm back to writing.

On another note, I've decided to add Jaune and Ilya as tagged characters. At this point they're almost as important characters as Weiss is. They are the main trio, after all.

(...)

Multiple days have passed since Weiss promised herself to tell Chammy about her identity. Those days quickly turned into weeks, which in turn cumulated into many long months in a blink of an eye.

Throughout all this time, she didn't manage to tell her friend the truth.

There was always some excuse she found to put it off.

Sometimes, it was because the game had been too cheerful, and she didn't have the heart to break the good mood with her reveal. Other times, the exact opposite reason was true, and she couldn't bring herself to have such an important conversation when they were already annoyed because of something else.

In the end, deep inside her heart, she knew very well that the real reason she didn't do it was because she was scared.

Her brother and Jaune might tell her that Chammy's and hers friendship wouldn't break over just her name all they could. However, that didn't change the fact that she found the risks of losing her friend—no matter how unlikely it might have been—too terrifying to actually do it.

That was why—despite so much time having passed since the day she promised herself to tell her friend who she really was—she was still here playing online games with both her friends while one of them didn't even know who she was.

A silent sigh almost escaped her when she saw her character die to one of her opponents.

In the last couple of months, the average player's skill level has risen substantially. People became so good at this game, in fact, that it became next to impossible for her team to find a game they didn't need to try their best to win anymore.

Sure, they were still among the best players of the game mode—they were quite possibly simply the best, in her personal opinion—but they no longer were on a completely different level when compared to everyone else.

Nowadays, they tended to have almost as many losses as they had victories, especially if they played against other players as obsessed with the game as they were.

They were also at a huge disadvantage for not having a full team to play with.

It was difficult for three people to do the work of four, after all.

A slight frown appeared on Weiss's face as she watched their fourth teammate, who was a random person, be completely obliterated after trying to rush the whole enemy team on their own.

"The other guy is gone, as well." Chammy groaned as she saw what happened too. "Snow has practically sacrificed herself to free their lane completely, and this guy somehow died despite of that, anyway! How did he do that!?"

"I think he was just a bit overconfident in his skills, Ilya." Jaune answered with a wry tone. "Don't blame him too much for that; I'm sure they will make up for it later down the line. By the way, how long will it take for you to respawn, Snow?"

Weiss looked at the counter on the portrait of her character.

The counter was a nifty feature that allowed her to see how long it would take for her to respawn after death. It was quite a new addition to the game that Jaune's sisters' added after enough people suggested it at the forum. After a few matches with the new feature, Weiss felt that it was a great inclusion to the game as well.

It was quite convenient, and it also made organising plans with her friends so much easier.

"I will respawn in about five seconds, Knight. I will need some time to get back into action, however; I sold my speed upgrade for one of my core items. In actual fights, I should be unbeatable by now, on the other hand." Weiss said.

Jaune hummed in response.

"Good." The boy said. "I think we can still get a win if we beat them at two or three more team fights. The only thing we have to do is make sure we actually get them this match."

"We better win this." Chammy cut in. "Those guys wouldn't stand a chance against us if it was a three-on-three game. The only reason we struggle as much as we do now is because our last teammate is a chump."

Weiss chuckled a little.

The fact that they weren't as invincible as they had been back when the game mode was new didn't diminish Chammy's competitive spirit at all. If anything, it only ignited that spirit further.

When they actually needed to give their best while playing the game, it was so much easier to care about winning above all else during the match.

In all honesty, she felt exactly the same about it.

Weiss quickly checked the statistics of all the players as she moved her character back into action before relaxing a bit into her chair.

Even if she did care about winning the match more than she ever did before, she could still tell when she was playing against opponents facing whom she didn't need to actually concentrate on the game as much.

Those guys might have killed her and their other teammate not a moment ago, but in total they still had barely half as many kills as her team had, though.

Those opponents of theirs did have a number advantage over them. They could probably play better than their fourth teammate as well. None of them could win against either her friends or her in an even playing field, however.

In short, her friends and she had this in a bag.

"I don't think we are going to have any issues winning this now, Chammy." Weiss said. By now she was feeling quite confident about their chances at winning this match.

Chammy grumbled.

"I hope not." The girl said. "Who knows, they might end up using some super hidden teleporter, one of their characters put in our base despite it being impossible, to spawn their entire team on our base and immediately reduce its health to zero. It wouldn't be the first time such a thing happened."

Weiss heard Jaune chuckle through her headphones in response to Chammy's words, and she almost let out a laugh as well.

"I don't think we are going to lose another game like that, Ilya." Jaune said through his chuckling. "It's quite a new glitch that not even my sisters know about. I doubt another team of random people is going to know how to do it, let alone be skilled enough to put it into action."

Their previous match had ended up like that, and Chammy had been beyond furious since. Apparently, in Chammy's opinion, it made the previous game completely invalid and shouldn't count as their loss.

Weiss didn't quite agree with her friend about that. Any strategy capable of winning a game was a valid strategy, in her opinion, regardless whether the developers intended it to work like that or not. She had to agree, however, that losing a game like that left a sour impression on her too.

Hopefully, winning this game would counteract that loss on its own.

"I still think that shouldn't have happened in the first place." Chammy grumbled again.

"Don't worry, I will share the info with my sisters, and they will patch it out in no time." Jaune said.

"I hope so." Chammy sighed.

Weiss hummed in thought quietly.

The teleporter glitch was a really interesting piece of strategy, one that would pretty much guarantee them a win against any other team. It would have been quite a waste to learn about it and never even try it out before getting it patched.

She was certain that it would help them learn about the issue with the game code as well.

"How about we use that glitch on some other people ourselves before it gets patched out, as well?" She proposed. "I think it would be a fun strategy to test out against other strong players."

"I bet they would hate it as much as I did." Chammy snarked before huffing a little. "We would have to play a lot of games this evening to find the opponents to use it on, though. I doubt half the people playing this game mode would even realise that we used a glitch to beat them if we won like that. It's difficult to find strong players when the only way to search opponents is through random matches."

Weiss sighed.

That was true; the types of opponents they could find by playing random matches were a real mixed bag.

Sure, most players were good enough at the game to make them struggle for their victories at least a little bit. Nonetheless, it didn't mean that those players had enough technical knowledge about the game mode to know just how exactly a teleporter glitch would lead to their immediate defeat.

It was next to impossible to ensure they would play against someone who would be as surprised by the unknown glitch as they had been in the previous match.

"I guess it would be too time-consuming to spend an entire evening on." Weiss said dejectedly. "I really wish there was a reliable way to find skilled players to play against. We would have easily been the best players in the world if we could just practice against people who were an actual challenge to beat."

Jaune chuckled a little at her words.

"I don't think there'll be such a way anytime soon, at least not in the Sci-War. Noir and Blanc are trying to add the competitive mode for the last couple of months without any success, you know?" The boy said.

Weiss groaned.

"Speaking of skilled players," Chammy started suddenly. "Have you guys heard about the tournament in Atlas?"

Weiss raised her eyebrow.

"What tournament?" She asked.

"Do you mean the one advertised at the forum?" Jaune asked at the same time.

Chammy let out a hum, and Weiss was pretty sure she nodded her head too.

"Yeah." The girl said. "I meant that one. I heard it will be happening in one of those high-class internet cafes, but anyone will be able to enter. As long as they had a team with them, of course."

"Doesn't that mean that we aren't eligible to enter?" Weiss couldn't help but ask.

"I know." Chammy sighed. "That doesn't mean we can't try, though. Jaune, you have a bunch of siblings; I'm sure one of them would be able to join us for a single tournament. We will sweep through the competition in no time with their help."

Jaune chuckled a little.

"Most of my sisters don't actually play games, Ilya. It would be a bit unfair to play with the ones who are actually gamers, too, considering that they literarily made the game." The boy said.

"Who cares?!" Chammy whined. "It's not like playing against us is truly fair in the first place, given that we are the beta testers of this game. Besides, all of our opponents would definitely use as many different exploits as we would."

A chuckle escaped Weiss.

"I don't think most exploits will be allowed there, Chammy. It's a proper tournament; I'm certain people organising it will make sure to ban all the strategies that would make the game too unbalanced." Weiss said.

"Come on, guys, just think about it." Chammy insisted. "It would be a perfect occasion to finally meet up in person, Snow. I know you don't want to tell me who you are through the video chat, but you shouldn't have the same problems with offline meetings, right?"

Weiss became tense.

Her character died on the screen as she failed to launch one of her skills, but she didn't care about it too much. She had far more important issues to deal with at the moment, rather than focus on the gameplay.

She knew she really should agree with Ilya on that and meet her for the tournament.

It was a perfect occasion to tell her who she was.

There weren't any reasons for her to decline.

She promised herself she would reveal who she was to her friend as soon as she could.

She couldn't bring herself to do it, however.

She was still afraid.

"The answer is no, Ilya." Jaune said in a sterner manner. "We won't be able to join, anyway. Snow is still nervous about revealing who she is, and I can't go to Atlas as easily as you two. We won't participate in it."

Weiss let out a breath in relief and forced herself to relax.

It seemed that Jaune handled the situation on his own already.

It was great.

She would tell Chammy her name when she was more confident in herself. If she were to risk her friendship, it was going to be on her own terms, not because some people decided to host a single tournament in her city.

Weiss took a deep, quiet breath.

Yeah, she was fine with that.

"Fine." Chammy harrumphed. "We are going to watch it, though. We will enter a video chat and watch the stream from the tournament while laughing at bad plays they will undoubtedly make. I'm not giving up on that one, you hear me?!"

Jaune sighed loudly.

"Don't worry, I don't mind watching the tournament with you guys; I'm sure it will be fun." The boy said.

"I don't mind it, either." Weiss chimed in while trying to sound calmer than she really was.

Chammy let out a short laugh.

"Great!" The girl said excitedly. "In that case, it will be the first time we will have a chat in the middle of the day! The tournament's in a little bit over two months, and I can't wait for it, already."

Weiss could only blink as she heard what her friend had just said.

She didn't know the tournament would happen in the middle of a day.

That complicated things tremendously for her!

She was bound to have lessons at that time.

What was she going to do about them?

As the counter on her character portrait reached zero, allowing her to respawn, she didn't even get back into the game. Her mind was stuck wondering how she was going to ensure she would have free time to connect to her friends for the tournament.

(...)

A couple of weeks have passed since Weiss was presented with the challenge of securing herself a free day in the recent future. Despite all the time having passed, she still wasn't exactly sure how she should do it.

It wasn't a secret that free time in the Schnee mansion was a scarce thing. The situations that allowed her to have more free time than the absolute minimum necessary for survival hardly ever happen.

In fact, Weiss could remember only two of them.

One of those situations had been back when one of her main teachers suffered an injury on their way to mansion. The other was right after her great debut as a singer, which was treated as a reward for her supposed hard work.

It was next to impossible for her to create such a situation again.

The most obvious method of pretending to be sick—which she heard Jaune and his sisters used a lot to skip school for a day or two—didn't work against her father. All her lessons happened in her mansion, with teachers coming to her instead of otherwise.

In the best-case scenario, it would only let her skip the combat lessons, and that wouldn't really help her at all.

The other obvious method of skipping lessons, which was failing to show up and going somewhere else, wouldn't be that useful, either. There were essentially no places she could hide from all the servants in the mansion, and she didn't have a different place she could use outside.

There really weren't many options she could think of to find a way to skip a day of lessons.

If some of her teachers were to be injured that day, she technically would get a break during their lessons. She wasn't about to harm someone so she could spend more time with her friends, however.

There were some things she simply wouldn't do.

It wasn't an issue she could ask someone for help with, either.

The chances of any of the servants at the mansion helping her were practically non-existent; they would most likely report any attempts at getting more free time to her father. Her father, in turn, would simply laugh her off if he learnt that she wanted a whole day for herself and nothing else.

A Schnee heiress couldn't waste an entire day on doing nothing productive, after all.

Weiss bit back a sigh as she made her way to the next lesson she had planned for the day.

The rest of her family also wouldn't help her with that.

Her sister wasn't really at the mansion all that often in recent times, and she certainly doubted that she would get the chance to see her before the tournament. Her mother was definitely too drunk to care about helping her, too.

The only person she could see helping her with that would be Whitley, and she really wasn't that sure that he would do that, especially if doing that would come at the cost of his own free time as well.

Weiss paused.

She saw her brother enter the room she was about to have a lesson in.

As a result of worrying so much about ensuring that she would get a free day to watch the tournament with her friends, she had completely forgotten about the fact that she had a joint lesson with her brother today.

The lessons she had with her brother were mostly business and public relations lessons her father sprung upon them after their sister left for the army school. They weren't too difficult. Weiss was also almost certain that the only reason Whitley had them was because she wouldn't be able to fully run the company while growing her career as a singer at the same time.

Those lessons were also slowly becoming more and more common.

A subtle smile made its way into her face.

Why would her getting a free day need to come at the cost of her brother losing one?

If they worked together on this, she was certain they would be able to find a way to ensure both of them get a free day to do as they please. She might even use that occasion to introduce Whitely to her friends!

Surely the younger boy would find them as incredible as she had.

With confidence in her step, she quickly entered the room right after her brother.

It would be the best to talk with him about it as soon as possible, and they still had some time for themselves before the teacher would arrive for their lesson. There was no reason for her to hesitate.

"Whitley." Weiss greeted as she confidently entered the room.

Whitley turned to look at her.

"Weiss." The boy nodded.

Weiss nodded back.

"I have something to discuss with you." She said.

Whitley raised an eyebrow slightly.

"Have you finally decided to heed my advice and told your friends about your identity?"

"N-Not quite, brother." Weiss faked a cough and looked to the side with a blush on her face. "I-I haven't really done that yet. I will do it soon, though."

Her brother looked at her with a smug expression on his face.

"I see." Whitley said.

Weiss sputtered in response.

"A-Anyway," She said. "I wanted to talk to you about helping me ensure we will have a free day in two months time. My friends and I promised ourselves that we would watch a certain gaming event at that time. If we both manage to skip lessons at that moment, I might have a chance to introduce you to them. I'm sure you'll love them; they're amazing people."

Whitley hummed in curiosity.

"How do you suppose we would accomplish that, sister?" The boy said. "I'm not going to lie; I'm tempted by that offer. However, it will be difficult to convince our teachers that we don't need lessons for the entire day. I dare say, it would be even impossible."

"That," Weiss paused for a second. "I'm not quite sure about. I'm certain we will be able to figure something out, though. Skipping a single day of classes can't be that difficult with both of us working together."

Whitley sighed.

"Fine, I will help you with getting that free day. I'm also quite curious about those friends of yours. They've stuck with you for quite some time now." The boy said. "Do you think they will like me, as well?"

Weiss nodded her head confidently.

"I'm certain of it."

Whitley smiled in response.

"That's great." Her brother said, before moving towards one of the chairs in the classroom. "Incidentally, I think I might have an idea how to ensure we will get that free day in two months. You're probably not going to like my idea, though."

Weiss slightly tilted her head to the side in confusion at her brother's words.

Why would her brother think that she would dislike his idea?

The idea—no matter what it actually was—meant more free time for her to spend with her friends. There were scarcely a few things that would make her hate a plan that accomplished that.

The only thing she could think of that would make her dislike such a plan was hurting others.

She almost gasped in her mind.

Was her brother actually thinking of hurting one of the teachers?

"What do you mean by that?" She decided to ask.

Whitley's smile turned into a smirk.

"I meant that we are going to get ourselves a free day by studying harder than we have ever studied before." The boy said in a tone confident enough to make him seem completely dedicated to the idea.

"Huh?!" Weiss took a step back.

Whitely grinned further.

"That's right." Her brother said. "We are going to study ahead of the material for all the subjects we are going to have that day. When the lessons finally come, we will simply prove to the teachers that we know all the material in no time. We will have a full day for ourselves like that."

"You can't be serious, brother." Weiss said. "When are we even supposed to find the time to study ahead of our usual lessons? We are already ahead of all standard curriculums for most of our subjects!"

Whitley's smile turned a bit gentler.

"Don't worry, sister. With a couple nights spent on studying the material, I'm sure we will get ahead of the teachers in no time." The boy said before standing up and putting his hand on her shoulder. "I know we can do this."

Weiss groaned.

It was an incredibly annoying idea, which meant she would probably have to cut a couple of her gaming sessions short.

She really didn't want to do this.

Unfortunately, it was the only valid idea they had and it would probably work.

A loud sigh escaped her.

"Alright, we will use your studying idea, Whitley." She gave in. "Let's discuss it further later, however. The lesson's about to start, and I wouldn't want our teacher to realise we are talking about skipping their lessons, alright?"

Whitley nodded his head before starting to prepare for the lesson.

Weiss joined him soon after.

It took all her might to not complain about the situation she found herself in, as she focused on the lesson that was about to start.

Why was it that in order to skip studying for a single day, she needed to study even more months before?

It was so unfair!

None of her friends had to deal with things like that.

Hopefully her friends were going to appreciate how much effort her brother and she were about to put into ensuring that they could watch that tournament with them.

(...)

Ilya was coming back from her training with a spring to her step.

It was another great day for her. Not only was she continuously getting stronger—which made her dream of attending Beacon with both her friends closer and closer to reality—but she also had the upcoming tournament to look up to.

She might not have been attending the tournament herself, which was a bummer in her opinion, but she was still excited to see it.

The game mode so many people were going to be playing was something she helped with the creation of, after all.

Who knew; maybe she would even learn of some new strategies while watching that tournament. She was sure that it was the exact thing Snow was going to be doing throughout the entire event.

That girl really couldn't help but strive to improve any chance she had.

Ilya stopped in place as she was about to enter the internet cafe she frequented.

It was a pity that she didn't have the chance to meet with Snow in person.

The rich girl was one of her best friends—she would even consider her the best friend—however, because of the fact that she simply didn't really know who she was in real life, there always seemed to be some distance between them.

She really wished that it wasn't the case.

There were many times she tried to bridge that distance between them ever since she met with Jaune in person months ago, but no matter what she tried, that gap still remained. It was slowly driving her insane.

She bit back a sigh; maybe Snow simply didn't see their relationship in the same way.

It was a possibility.

Ilya quickly shook her head.

No, she couldn't think like that!

Snow had been there for her when her parents died, and they enjoyed each other's company like no other. It was impossible for them to be anything but friends at this point; she wouldn't believe otherwise.

Although she still didn't know who her friend was in real life, she wasn't going to let that get in the way of their friendship.

With a confident smile on her face, she nodded her head to herself and entered the internet cafe.

She wondered whether Jaune or Snow were going to be online so early. It was still quite a bit of time until their usual gaming session started, but she supposed it wouldn't hurt to check.

"Hey there, Ila!" One of the customers shouted as Ilya entered the room.

Ilya ignored the shout.

Why should she bother answering some random person who wasn't even talking to her?

She wasn't named Ila, after all.

Her lack of reaction seemed to have somehow offended the person shouting, because not a few seconds later they quickly stood up from their spot and began rushing roughly in her direction.

Ilya still ignored the person.

She was a huntress in training, so she wasn't afraid of some rowdy civilian.

Besides, she still believed that they weren't actually talking to her, since they weren't exactly going directly towards her, nor were they using her name.

"Hey, Ila, I'm talking to you!" The customer said loudly upon reaching her before shaking her a little.

Ilya couldn't help but blink a couple times in confusion as she was confronted by the stranger.

Once she had gotten a good look at the person shaking her, however, she realised that the person looked familiar to her. It was one of the boys she remembered from the school she went to back when her parents were still alive. That boy was quite rude, but she used to hang around with his group of friends as an attempt to fit in despite being a faunus.

That boy was also one of the people responsible for her introduction to gaming.

"Were you talking to me?" She asked after a moment.

"Of course I was!" The boy said. "I did shout your name, didn't I?"

Ilya huffed.

"My name's not Ila." She said. "It's Ilya."

"Yeah, whatever." The boy waved her off. "It's like one letter of difference."

Ilya frowned.

Well, that certainly wasn't an enjoyable reunion.

"Do you have business with me?" She asked.

In response to her question, the boy suddenly snapped his fingers as if she had just remembered something.

"Right! I actually do have some business with you." The boy said quickly before leaning towards her a little. "You played games, right? You did join us for couple game parties, if I remember correctly. Do you still play?"

Ilya nodded her head slowly, unsure as to the direction this conversation was going in.

The boy grinned.

"That's great!" The boy said. "Have you ever played the ATG custom game mode of Sci-War? It's kind of becoming a big thing right now."

Ilya could only blink again.

Yes, she did play the game mode.

She was a member of the winning team, after all.

It was incredibly tempting to admit who she really was in the game, but she knew the boy probably wouldn't believe her if she did say that. Not many people would believe that one of the best players in a game mode as competitive as ATG was only a barely teenage girl.

In the end, she only nodded her head.

"Yes, I'm familiar with the game mode." She said.

"That's awesome!" The boy exclaimed. "Join my team."

"What?" Ilya couldn't help but ask.

Out of all the things she expected to happen after she returned from the training today, being invited to join someone's team in ATG wasn't one of them. If anything, she thought that her inviting someone else to join her team would have been far more likely.

There really wasn't a reason for her to join other people's teams.

"There's an ATG tournament happening soon, and I'm going to attend it with my friends." The boy started explaining in response to her question. "We are still one person short of the full team, however, and you can slot right in. What do you say? Do you want to take part in the tournament with us?"

Ilya took a slight step back as she hesitated to think of an answer.

The idea of joining some other team as a singular member for the tournament hasn't really crossed her mind until now. In her mind

At the same time, the idea of participating in the tournament was quite an appealing prospect to her, especially since she knew that her friends would be cheering on her the entire time she was playing.

It would mean that she wouldn't get the chance to enjoy watching the tournament with her friends, though.

Ilya hesitated.

Although she really wanted to join the tournament as well.

"I'll think about it?" She asked more than stated in response to the boy's offer.

"Perfect!" The boy nodded before heading off for his computer. "I'll see you later; my friends and I are going to be coming here to train our teamwork over the next couple of weeks. If you ever want to play with us, just come here as well!"

Ilya could only blink as she watched the boy leave her alone.

She really wasn't sure what she was supposed to do.

At the very least, she should probably talk to her friends about it first.

And cut!

Chapter's finished!

I hope you enjoyed guys. It was surprisingly pleasant chapter to write, usually when I take a break from writing, no matter how small, I tend to have problems with getting back into the thick of things but now it wasn't an issue at all.

Anyway, that's it for now.

See ya!
