Hello everybody. Happy New Year.
Thanks to x snow-pony x and GleeJunkie007 for reviewing.
Well talking about Epilepsy awareness month the fundraiser I started didn't go too well. Oh well- it was worth a try.
"So Aryan will arrive in the morning. And he's going to need somewhere to stay. And you are now the only boy who isn't already sharing with someone since David has moved in with Wheezy. So we are thinking… I am thinking. That Aryan moves in here with you tomorrow. And then, on New Year's Eve. Nathan and Qwyn turns sixteen. And I've heard Qwyn talking about that they want to leave already the next day to start off the new year… Oh. Even the next decade with… with just making a new start in every way for themselves. And I'm also think that you will get the attic when they move away. Living up there will give you some more privacy so you can do your homework or whatever you want in peace and quiet. How does that sound?"
Shawn had kind of been asleep before I and Mike barged in to tell him about the new boy who was going to share his room. What choice did we have? He would have to have some kind of warning.
"It's only two months left until the twins leave anyway." Shawn let hear a short, tired laugh. "No. It's fine with me. But…" He looked down on the big bed he and David had been sharing. "You might want to get two smaller beds instead of this one. I have nothing against it but I wouldn't take for granted this new boy is okay with sharing a bed with a whole new guy."
"Of course." Mike laughed and patted Shawn's shoulder standing up. "Get back into bed. I'll get some new beds in a second hand store or somewhere tomorrow." Shawn nodded and crawled over the bed before he hit the pillows again. "Goodnight Shawn."
"Goodnight Mike… Emma." Shawn mumbled, I got up too and tip-toed out of the room after Mike.
I could see Mike frown towards the door when I closed it as quietly as possible. Then he looked at me and smiled again.
"I guess I'll go home then. Oh. And I think Jim's gone to bed now. But he wanted to do something for raising money for Epilepsy awareness in November. I thought I'd help him but the others didn't exactly agree with him. So if none of us others brings it up again I don't think he's going to either. He was pretty upset."
Mike gave a small smile. But still seemed weirdly distressed about something. I wasn't going to pressure him though and went to get my things and then went home.
"Mike? Emma?" When I was in the office and left my stuff the next morning suddenly Emily and Jim were in the door. Jim looked quite insecure and Emily was carrying a bunch of fabrics. At least it didn't look like something else than fabrics to me. "Jim told me that he wanted to do something to raise money for Epilepsy awareness. But he also said that nobody wanted to help him. But I told him I wanted to. It's my birthday November the fourteenth." Emily told us. "By then half of November will have passed. But maybe I can make more of these and sell them too. I don't know for how much or anything. But I'd really like to help Jim with this. It was really scary when he had that seizure and I wouldn't want that to happen to anyone." She handed me the pile of fabrics she had been carrying. "That is just a bit of stuff. I make loads of these stuff and I've never known how to get rid of it so there is no way I could use it all anyway."
I and Mike took each item of the pile of fabrics that Emily was carrying. Then another each, and another one of the pile of different aprons, handbags, beanies and different caps. As well as jackets, sweatshirts and even sweatpants in different colors and patterns.
"Emily." I said at last when I and Mike had taken a look on everything she had been carrying and hung it on one of the desk chairs. "These things are good. They're well made. They look like something that could be bought in a store except better and unique. What do you say Mike? Maybe we would need to talk to the social services since it's a matter of making money."
"Making money?" I jumped when I heard a new voice in the door. "For what?" The new, Indian boy stood in the door looking from Emily, to me, to Mike and to the pieces of things lying on the back of a chair. "For me?"
"No." Mike gave a short laugh. "Hey. I'm Mike." He shook the new boy's hands. "Hello Kayla. We were just thinking. One of our younger children- Jim Harrow wants to start a fundraiser for what apparently is International Epilepsy awareness month. He wants to sell some of his old toys to make money and now Emily here." Mike laid his hand on her shoulder. "Have some things that she'd like to sell to raise more money."
"I have loads of more things. Full boxes in my room. And some in my brothers' room as well."
"Well. Kayla. You are Emily's social worker so I guess you should get your say in this too. Is it okay if Emily sells some of these things and then give the money to Jim's fundraiser for Epilepsy awareness?"
"I couldn't see why not." The social worker replied. "Although how were you planning on selling it?"
"I could put it on Facebook." I said. "We don't have to put address or anything out there. We could just say if someone wants to buy something we can meet them up at the grocery store with the things or something?" Mike and Kayla nodded agreeing. "And then maybe. George can tell his friends and Luce can tell his friends and yeah, that sort of things."
Jim had come into the room too and stood by Emily looking over the things she had brought in here. He seemed thoughtful while he looked at the things and Mike told him too what it was Emily wanted to do.
"That sounds good if you ask me." Aryan said with a sort of dreamed away look in his eyes. "My brother Arnav gets seizures. I can help out." A small smile formed on Jim's lips. "I have loads of stuff so I can sort some things out when I unpack it. It won't be much for the world or worth any hundreds of pounds but it is something."
"It is something." Jim's smile was growing. "And if you raise a little, and I raise a little, and Emily raise a little. Then together we can make loads. Nobody really cares about raising awareness for Epilepsy so only a little bit is more than what anybody else cares to do"
"I used to have Epilepsy when I was about your age." I said thoughtfully while also pushing my fingers through Jim's brown curls. "I think it would be important to raise awareness. Not many people knows much about it yet it's one of the most common diseases of all. I also sorted out some things when I moved here. I gave that away or put it at Leon's but… then I sorted out more things when I unpacked too." Jim's smile was growing bigger by the second. "I think if we gather everybody there are more people who wants to help too."
Jim's smile had grown and was now reaching from ear to ear. He seemed really confident, like he'd be able to raise millions and millions of pounds for it.
"Let's gather everybody then. Emma, can you show Aryan into the living room and I'll take everybody there. Or are you in a rush Kayla?" The social worker shook her head. "Then we can talk more about Aryan later and…"
Instead of talking more Mike started whispering to himself when he went out of the office and shouted for the kids. I ruffled Jim's hair. He was smiling brightly up at Emily and then turned to the stuff she had made.
"Emma?" Jim asked me, still fingering with a beanie he had found. "I know they have loads of stuff since I was little. Do you think I can get to call my parents and ask if they have more stuff we can sell? I really want as much as possible."
I looked down on him wondering. I still didn't know much about Jim's parents and why he was in care- I'd have to ask Mike about this.
While I led Emily, Jim and Aryan into the living room we could hear Mike walking around on the upper floor asking the kids to come downstairs. Emily and Jim found their places on the floor by the TV and sat close together talking about what could be sold or not.
"You just find a spot wherever you can find one." I told Aryan. "On the couch or on a chair or on the floor or… well. There'll be loads of kids in here and we all just find places wherever we can find them." Aryan nodded and looked around the room. Stopping when a blonde, short-haired girl we all knew came into the room.
"Ashton?"
The girl stopped in the door staring like obsessed on the dark boy.
"Aryan?"
Jim still wants to do something to raise Epilepsy awareness. At least he's had Emily with him who's got a lot of things she's made that she can sell. The new boy is also on track. He will have to share with Shawn for now. Then when the twins Qwyn and Nathan leave after turning sixteen on New Year's Eve Shawn will get the attic to himself.
Aryan and his twin brother Arnav (who isn't in the story but is mentioned) are both portrayed by Karan Brar. And they are sent in by Maleeha x.
Random fact
Honestly I think I will enjoy writing this whole Epilepsy awareness thing very much.
