"I've come to a conclusion about what you asked on Emily's birthday." Mike had called both the twins and their little sister into the office. "As you probably know I also had to talk to the social services and the choice I made is more complicated then it seems."
"Okay, okay." All of them were getting impatient. But Qwyn the most. "Just tell us? Can our name be Milligan, or not?"
"Yes." Mike smiled. "But not while you still live here… As the social services had remarked is that it might seem weird if I suddenly let some care kids use my last name. But- as soon as you're not under my roof anymore, I'll help you sort out the paper work. And then, for you boys it will only be a few, short months. And for you Emily, it will be a lot longer. But time passes by quicker than you know it."
"I think…" The twins were gladly smiling at each other. "…I think that's what I want. Rather than something else my dad came up with… And I get why it must seem weird for some people if we shared your last name. And the paper work for this for us two can be started right away, right? I don't want the same name as my dad for a second longer."
Qwyn did look quite happy, Nathan not as happy. And Emily really not as happy.
"Oh come on sis." Qwyn patted her shoulder. "It feels like only yesterday I and Nathan were taken into a place like this. We wanted to get out and it felt like an eternity before we would turn sixteen. Then time just flew by. And it will for you, I promise you."
Emily didn't seem so sure.
"Well…. I guess that is better than to have to go with my dad's name for all future… Although… that means…"
"That you leave mum's and Minnie's behind too?" Apparently, Nathan saw more than I and Mike, maybe even Qwyn saw. "You do know… Mum and Minnie are never going to disappear. If you don't want the name dad came up with then it's fine. And if you want our name it's fine. If you want us to keep our old name, the name that was yours until dad ran away with you, then we will. And you don't ha…"
"I want Milligan."
It was barely more than a whisper. Still it interrupted what Nathan, and maybe Qwyn and Mike were saying.
"Well then." Mike riffled in his papers. "I'll sort it out for you two. For Emily, as you already know there'll have to be another few years. Nathan? Can you ask Ella and Tracie to come in here now?"
"Should I stay here and be with Ella?"
Emily really had taken the part of Ella's mother…
It was sweet though…
"No. I need to speak to the twins alone. But Emma, can you stay?"
"Yes, of course."
The twins' and Emily's dad, the younger twins' parents, Peityn's parents…
There were so many parents out there that were absolutely dreadful.
And then there were mine, Emily and the twins' mum, Marley's parents…
"Life isn't fair."
I was woken from my thoughts when Ella and Tracie had came into the office and Ella said something about it not being fair how their parents had just left them.
No, as true as told it wasn't!
"I know that you know your parents have showed up wishing to see you. And I know that you both have said yes. Now we have some new information. Your parents' names are Patrick and Ellis Spencer." Mike looked as if he didn't know what to say next and I had to say I didn't either. "They are nineteen and twenty years old and as you probably know. That means they were very young when they had you. Only fifteen and sixteen."
"That doesn't give them a reason to do what they did." Tracie said angrily and Ella had tears in her eyes. "Is it, Emma?"
"No, of course not."
"Will we be changing our name to Spencer when they came around?" Tracie frowned. "I don't like that name and I don't like them. And our name is Heart and nothing else."
"I'm afraid…" Mike looked apologetically to the twins. "…That since you guys are underage it isn't up to you." Tracie pouted and Ella looked down sadly. "But let's not worry about that now. Either way. Like you thought Tracie. Maybe they could come at the same moment as Jim's parents and you three could support each other. Now we have both them both signed up for Saturday November the last. And all four will come at two o'clock. None of you, neither you or Jim will be able to go out with your parents. Not even take a walk around a walk. But we will make sure everybody here knows what's going on and there's no point with anyone wishing to be fostered."
I wasn't so sure I understood more of this than what the twins seemed to do.
But as much I understood were fact. November the last both Jim's parents and Tracie and Ella's parents were to show up here.
And if there was a good, only he would know how on earth this would end up.
And just as little I understood when George showed up on morning November the last.
"Why are there so many care workers here all of a sudden?" I thought out loud. "All of us are here all of a sudden." I couldn't help but to chuckle shortly. "You and I and Luce and Mike. Plus all of the children and very soon, two sets of parents. And Kayla from the social services. How many people do we need?"
"With not one but two pairs of parents arriving at once we need all the help we could get. At times like these there are almost things going wrong and we will always have to be prepared for things like kidnapping or abuse. It does sound like stuff that doesn't happen but for some reason they have ended up here and it's just a safety preauction."
I felt myself turning bright red- the answer was obvious! I could have figured that one myself.
"Don't worry about it so much Em. Everything's obvious once you know it."
"Why aren't they here yet?"
Ella wasn't usually this impatient. But neither she, nor Tracie nor Jim could wait for their parents to come. And especially not the twins.
"It's okay." Emily sat down on the bench in the hallway and patted next to her for Ella. "I can take care of you too…"
I hadn't been able to drop that it wasn't well that Emily was acting like the mum of Ella. But at least they acted kindly towards one another and gave them both something to their lives. Right now Ella sat on the bench and Emily laid her arm around the younger shoulders and waited.
The time passed by, it was now half an hour past two and still there had been no sign of any of the parents.
"I'll go check with Luce or Mike or George if they know something about why your parents aren't here. Because this does seem strange."
"There's some traffic-jam a few blocks away from here and cars are standing still." Luce sat by the computer in the office and told me as soon as I came. "I bet both Tracie and Ella's and Jim's parents are somewhere in there." Luce stood up from the desk chair. "I'll go tell them about it."
I went out from the office, not really knowing where I was going. But I did hear Luce talking to Ella and then the front door opening.
"HEY." He shouted at something outside. "GET DOWN FROM THERE."
I frowned at what I was doing, later on I would barely even know what it was but it must have been with dishes.
"DIDN'T YOU TWO HEAR WHAT I SAID? GET DOWN FROM THERE IMMIDEATELY!"
"NOOOO."
The scream stopped abruptly. And was followed by silence as thick as I had heard it before.
I was frozen for just one second before I turned and ran through the house and to the driveway. Then hoped that this wasn't as bad as it had sounded like.
It was just as bad…
If not worse.
Random fact
I do like writing Emily with her brothers. They are so adorably protective of her after being apart for so long.
