Chapter 24: The Unexpected Journey
The sun hung low in the sky, casting long shadows as Luigi and Shantae made their way through the outskirts of Scuttle Town. The path was rugged, winding between jagged rocks and patches of wildflowers. The air was warm but carried a hint of coolness, a gentle breeze rustling through the leaves. It wasn't long ago that they had seen the strange purple crack in the sky, and Luigi still couldn't shake the feeling of unease it left behind. But now, with the Poltergust 5000 strapped securely to his back, he felt a bit more confident—maybe even ready to face whatever had fallen from the sky.
Even so, his eyes kept darting around, scanning the shadows between the rocks, and he couldn't help but glance over his shoulder every few minutes, as if expecting something to jump out at them. His hand clung tightly to the strap of the Poltergust, fingers clenching so hard they were starting to ache. Every rustle of the wind made him flinch, and he bit his lip, trying to keep his nerves in check. When he looked over at Shantae, he noticed she seemed perfectly at ease, humming a little tune as they walked. He envied her calmness.
After a stretch of silence, Luigi mustered the courage to speak, hoping a conversation might distract him from his nerves. "It's nice of your uncle to fix this for me," he said, patting the Poltergust. "I, uh, wasn't expecting it to be free."
Shantae turned to him, a small grin playing on her lips. "Oh, it wasn't free. I just didn't want you to worry about it."
Luigi blinked, confusion crossing his face. "Wait, what do you mean?"
"Well," Shantae said with a shrug, her tone casual yet playful, "there were some sailors in town. They were willing to pay good gems to see a dance, so I went to the dance parlor and, you know... danced." She said it so casually, as if it was the most normal thing in the world.
Luigi's face turned a bright shade of red. "Oh! Uh, right..." He struggled to find a response, his mind racing as he tried to process the thought of Shantae dancing for sailors to earn gems. He could hardly picture it—what would Mario think if he heard about this? But then, he realized how silly that sounded and quickly pushed the thought away.
Shantae giggled at his flustered reaction, clearly enjoying how easy it was to make him squirm. "Don't worry, it's not a big deal. I made more than enough to cover the cost, so it all worked out." She gave him a light nudge, her eyes twinkling with amusement. "You should be thanking me, you know."
"Oh! Yes, of course! Thank you, Shantae," Luigi stammered, trying to recover his composure. "I, um, appreciate it. Really." He decided it was probably best not to think too hard about it, though the thought still lingered, making him feel oddly grateful.
As they continued down the path, the landscape began to change, becoming more rugged and overgrown. The silence stretched between them, not uncomfortable but thoughtful. Luigi's grip on the Poltergust slackened a bit, and he took a deep breath, trying to calm his racing heart. After a while, Shantae glanced over at Luigi, her curiosity getting the better of her. "So, you mentioned you've had some adventures of your own. What's your story? You seem like you've seen quite a bit."
Luigi scratched the back of his head, looking a little embarrassed. "Well, I've had my share of adventures, but... honestly, the real hero was always my brother, Mario."
"Mario?" Shantae repeated, her interest piqued. "Tell me about him."
Luigi's eyes lit up, and he began to talk, his voice filled with a mix of pride and nostalgia. "Mario was... he was always so brave. He could take on anything—giant turtles, fire-breathing dragons, anything you could think of. Bowser, especially. I've seen him face off with Bowser more times than I can count. Every time, Mario was there, ready to save the day."
Shantae listened intently, nodding along. She could sense how much Mario meant to him, how proud he was of his brother. "Sounds like he was a pretty big deal," she said with a warm smile. "But where were you during all of this?"
Luigi hesitated, glancing down at the ground as they walked. "I... I was there, with him," he said slowly. "I always went with Mario, because... well, he was always there to protect me. Whenever things got tough, he'd just... handle it."
Shantae picked up on the way Luigi's voice softened, his words tinged with a hint of sadness. She wanted to ask more, but she sensed it wasn't the right moment. "You two must've made quite the team," she said gently. "I'd love to hear more stories sometime, you know, while we're not walking toward something potentially dangerous."
Luigi managed a small chuckle at that, feeling a bit more at ease. "Yeah... maybe."
After a few moments of silence, Luigi hesitated before asking, "So... I've been meaning to ask. I mean, when we first met, you were... a monkey." He paused, still wrapping his head around the memory. "How do you do that? You said you're a half-genie, but I don't really understand what that means."
Shantae's eyes brightened, and she turned to him, a smile spreading across her face. "Oh, that! Yeah, my mom was a genie, and my dad was human. So I'm kind of... both? It's a little complicated, but I get some powers from my mom's side, like transforming into animals and whipping things with my hair." She twirled a strand of her long ponytail playfully. "Comes in handy more often than you'd think."
"Wow..." Luigi said, genuinely impressed. "I didn't even know genies were real. And you can transform? That sounds... pretty cool."
"It is!" Shantae said with a grin. "Though, it can be a bit tricky sometimes. But that's part of the fun, right? Figuring out how to make it all work." She paused, then added, "I think it's kind of like you and that Poltergust. You've got your own tricks up your sleeve."
Luigi's face lit up, but he quickly looked down, trying to hide his smile. "I guess so... I mean, I'm still getting the hang of it."
"Hey, you're doing great," Shantae said, her voice encouraging. "Besides, I think we make a pretty good team."
They pressed on, the path growing steeper as they climbed up a large hill. Luigi's mind wandered back to Mario, the memories of their adventures flickering in his mind like an old film reel. It felt strange, talking about it with someone else—almost like reopening a door he thought had been closed forever. But there was something comforting about the way Shantae was willing to share her own stories, too.
Suddenly, small rustling sounds broke the silence, snapping Luigi out of his thoughts. He looked up, eyes wide with alarm, as he saw shadowy creatures darting out from the bushes ahead. Their eyes glowed menacingly, and they moved with a skittering, unsettling speed. Luigi jumped, letting out a small yelp, his hands trembling as he fumbled with the Poltergust, his fingers clumsily trying to switch it on. He could feel his heart pounding in his chest, his breath quickening.
Shantae's eyes narrowed, and she immediately got into a defensive stance, her ponytail swishing as she prepared for a fight. "Looks like we've got company," she said, her voice steady, but with a spark of excitement. "Just the warm-up I needed."
The creatures lunged, and Luigi managed to switch on the Poltergust just in time. The vacuum roared to life, sucking up one of the enemies with a satisfying whoosh. He was shaking, but he kept going, moving the nozzle to catch the next creature. He could barely control his hands, but he knew he couldn't afford to stop now.
Shantae moved with a dancer's grace, her ponytail snapping through the air like a whip. "Not bad, Luigi!" she said, a playful edge to her voice. "You're braver than you think, you know."
Luigi's face flushed, and he looked away, trying to hide his embarrassment. "I-I am scared!" he stammered. "But that doesn't mean I'm just going to stand around and do nothing."
Shantae smiled, twirling around to smack another creature with her hair. "See? That's called being brave! And maybe just a little stubborn," she teased, giving him a wink. Luigi didn't know how to respond to that, so he just muttered something under his breath and kept his eyes on the path ahead. But inside, he felt a little stronger, a little less afraid.
As they crested the top of the hill, the scenery changed drastically. In the distance, looming over the landscape like a dark, foreboding shadow, was a large mansion. Its towers reached up to the sky, twisted and jagged, and the windows glowed with a faint, eerie light. The building looked out of place, like it had been plucked from somewhere else entirely and dropped in the middle of this world.
Luigi's eyes widened in horror, and he froze. "No... it can't be," he whispered, his voice barely audible. His hand clutched the Poltergust strap so tightly that his knuckles turned white.
Shantae turned to him, confused. "What is it, Luigi?"
"That's... it's a mansion," Luigi said, his voice trembling. "I've seen it before. It looks just like the one where I... It's where King Boo lives. It's out of place... it shouldn't be here."
Shantae's eyes sparkled with excitement, her adventurous spirit coming alive. "Ghosts? King Boo?" Shantae's playful tone faltered for a brief moment as she took in Luigi's expression, her eyes reflecting a flicker of worry. She softened, placing a hand on his arm. "Hey, don't worry. I've got your back, okay? We'll check it out, and if things get too spooky, we'll handle it together."
Luigi's heart pounded in his chest, but when he saw Shantae's reassuring smile, he felt a little braver. "O-okay," he said, nodding. "But... let's be careful."
Shantae gave his arm a playful tug, her grin widening. "Careful's my middle name... or something like that. Come on, Ghostbuster! What's the worst that could happen? We find some spooky friends?"
Despite his nerves, Luigi couldn't help but smile a little at that. As they approached the mansion, its ominous silhouette grew larger, casting a long shadow over them. Whatever had brought this mansion here, they were going to face it—together.
