Chapter 51: "The Aftermath"
With Robotnik finally gone, the heroes took stock of the battlefield, exhaustion evident in each of their faces. But their relief was shattered by Amy's desperate voice cutting through the silence. She was crouched beside Tails, holding him gently, her face twisted with anguish. "Help! Someone, please—Tails needs help!" she cried, her voice breaking.
Sonic's world seemed to stop as he took in the sight of Tails lying limp in Amy's arms, his injuries more severe than Sonic had let himself imagine. He rushed over, his heart pounding, his mind racing with denial and fear. This was Tails—his best friend, the little brother he'd promised to protect. And now, he lay broken, barely breathing.
Sonic fell to his knees beside them, his hand trembling as he reached out to touch Tails's shoulder. The cuts, the bruises, the way Tails's fur was matted with dried blood—it was worse than anything he'd ever seen. A sick feeling of helplessness washed over him, the certainty that this wasn't just an attack. This was personal. Robotnik had done this to hurt him.
A surge of anger boiled up, but it was laced with something else—fear. Real, raw fear. For the first time in his life, Sonic couldn't just run fast enough to escape or fight hard enough to fix this. His speed, his confidence, his usual cocky grin—they meant nothing here. Nothing could undo what had been done to Tails.
His voice cracked as he looked at Zelda, his desperation spilling over. "Tails… he needs help. Please… I can't lose him."
Zelda placed a comforting hand on Sonic's shoulder, grounding his worry with her own calm resolve. "We'll take him to Hyrule. The healers there might be able to save him." Her voice was gentle but firm, giving Sonic something solid to hold onto amidst the storm of emotions threatening to overwhelm him.
Sonic's hands balled into fists, his jaw clenched as he looked down at Tails. Rage and guilt churned in his chest, tearing him apart from the inside. He'd faced Robotnik more times than he could count, always bouncing back, always laughing in his face. But this? This was different. Robotnik had sent a message, and the weight of it settled on Sonic's shoulders, a burden he couldn't shake.
Amy reached out, placing a hand on his arm, her voice soft but filled with resolve. "Sonic, we'll get him help. Don't let Robotnik take away who you are."
Sonic nodded, swallowing hard as he forced himself to stand. But as he looked down at Tails, doubt lingered, gnawing at the edges of his mind. This was more than a battle; it was a reminder that even he couldn't outrun everything.
Nearby, Roll frantically searched the rubble, calling out, "Dr. Light? Dr. Light!" She scrambled over broken stone, fear evident in her voice. Just as she spotted a faint, shimmering shield that had protected Dr. Light from the chaos, Proto Man and Bass approached, each with a different urgency in their step. Relief washed over Roll as Dr. Light stirred, slowly opening his eyes.
Proto Man knelt beside Roll, his usually composed demeanor giving way to genuine concern. "Dr. Light, can you hear me?" he asked, his voice low but steady.
Dr. Light looked up, a faint smile forming as he recognized Proto Man and Roll beside him. "I'm… I'm alright," he murmured, his voice weak but reassuring.
Bass, who had been scanning the area tensely, crossed his arms and gave a curt nod. "Glad you made it through, Doc," he said, though his tone remained guarded. "Wouldn't have expected you to be the one who needed saving."
Roll shot him a sharp look, but Proto Man interjected, nodding toward the rest of the heroes. "We need to focus on getting Tails and everyone else out of here safely. We can talk about what happened later."
Roll helped Dr. Light to his feet, casting a grateful look at both Proto Man and Bass. Together, they prepared to move with the others, aware that their battles had only just begun.
Meanwhile, Knuckles stormed up to Daisy, his expression a mix of fury and disbelief. "You did what with the Chaos Emeralds?" he demanded, fists clenched.
Daisy blinked, feigning innocence. "Oh, you mean when I 'sent them away'?" She paused, an impish grin slowly spreading across her face. "Relax, Knuckles—I didn't actually send them anywhere. I just made it look like they vanished to trick Robotnik."
Knuckles's eyes widened, his expression flickering between anger and shock before settling into grudging relief. "You… tricked Robotnik?" he repeated, the realization dawning on him.
Daisy nodded, her grin widening. "Yep. Figured he didn't deserve the satisfaction of even thinking he'd get his hands on them." She pulled out the five Chaos Emeralds, each one gleaming in her hands, and handed them back to Knuckles. "They were safe with me the whole time."
Knuckles took the emeralds, staring down at them with a mixture of awe and gratitude. He shook his head, his voice gruff but appreciative. "You're tougher than I gave you credit for. If something had happened to these…" He trailed off, his face softening just a little as he glanced at her. "But… thanks, Daisy. Guess I owe you for saving them."
Daisy winked, giving him a playful nudge. "Anytime, tough guy. Just remember, you're not the only one who can pull off a save around here."
Knuckles rolled his eyes but couldn't hide a small, reluctant grin. "Alright, alright. Just don't go making a habit of it, princess."
The landscape around them continued to fade, the vibrant colors of the Mushroom Kingdom dulling to muted grays and browns. Flowers drooped, trees withered, and the once-brilliant green fields took on a lifeless hue. The Toads staggered, pale and exhausted, their strength visibly sapped as they clutched each other for support. Without the Power Star, the Kingdom itself seemed as if it were slowly dying, leaving only a haunting shell of what it once was.
Donkey Kong pulled out a communicator, signaling to the Arwings above. "Fox," he said, his voice steady yet weary, "we're heading to Hyrule next. This fight isn't over yet."
Fox's voice crackled through the communicator, resolute. "Understood. We'll rendezvous there."
Turning back to the group, Donkey Kong focused on Sora. "Can you open a path to Hyrule? We need to get Tails help, fast."
Sora looked down at his Keyblade, the light glinting off its edge. "I'll try." He raised the Keyblade, focusing as he directed its energy toward a clearing. With a shimmer of light, a portal began to form—a glowing pathway to Hyrule. Link stepped up beside him, handing Sora his shield.
"Use this," Link said, his voice steady. "It'll help guide you."
As Sora concentrated, Shantae noticed Luigi standing alone, his shoulders slumped, his face pale, shadowed with grief and something more—a flicker of fear that was deep and raw. He looked around at the fading Mushroom Kingdom—the place he'd come to call home—its vibrancy vanishing before his eyes. The colors dulled, flowers wilted, and the air felt cold and empty. Painful memories surged within him: Mario, gone; Peach, taken; now the Kingdom itself was dying, slipping away like everything else he'd lost. His breaths quickened, and his chest tightened, his heart pounding as the familiar grip of fear and helplessness closed in, heavy and suffocating.
Shantae quietly approached him, her gaze soft and understanding. "Hey, Luigi," she said gently, placing a hand on his arm. "I know things feel… impossible right now." Her tone was calm and steady, like an anchor. "Just breathe with me, okay?"
Luigi looked at her, his eyes wide, haunted. But he nodded, trying to match her breathing, the warmth of her presence beginning to ease the frantic beat of his heart. Shantae inhaled slowly, guiding him through each breath, her voice a comforting whisper. "In… and out. Just one breath at a time."
As his breathing began to steady, she gave him a small, encouraging smile. "I know you're scared," she said, her voice light yet reassuring. "But you're stronger than you feel right now. You're here because you never give up on the people you love. And they need you."
Luigi's gaze softened, the tension in his shoulders easing a bit as her words sank in. Shantae's optimism felt like a lifeline, pulling him out of the spiral. "I just… I can't lose anyone else," he whispered, his voice barely audible.
Shantae squeezed his shoulder gently. "And you won't. You're not alone, Luigi. We're all in this together. And with you here, we've got a better chance than ever." Her smile brightened, her positivity contagious. "One step at a time, alright?"
A faint, grateful smile touched Luigi's face as he nodded, his breathing now even. Shantae's presence reminded him he wasn't alone, and that even in the darkest moments, he had people beside him who believed in him. He straightened a little, feeling just a bit steadier.
As the group prepared to move out, Donkey Kong noticed Samus standing off to the side, fists clenched, her gaze fixed on the ground. Her usually steely composure had cracked, anger radiating from her as she struggled to contain it. DK could tell she wasn't just angry at Robotnik—this was something deeper, aimed inward. He knew why. He was one of the few who truly understood what Peach meant to her.
He stepped up beside her, speaking quietly. "You know, Samus, Peach always knew you'd come back for her. She's always believed in you, and I've got a feeling she still does."
Samus looked up, her eyes blazing with frustration and regret. "I should've come back sooner. I should have… I let her down." Her voice was tight, edged with self-reproach. "I thought staying away would protect her. But all I did was leave her alone when she needed me most."
Donkey Kong nodded, letting her words settle. "Look, we all make mistakes, even when we're trying to do the right thing. But don't waste time beating yourself up about it." He gave her a steady, knowing look. "Peach needs you now. And I think you're ready to do whatever it takes to bring her back."
Samus clenched her fists tighter, her gaze hardening. "I won't let her down again, DK. No matter what I have to face—I'm bringing her back."
A small, approving smile tugged at the corners of DK's mouth. "Good. Then get to your ship, and don't hold back." He paused, meeting her gaze. "When you see her, make sure she knows. No more leaving things unsaid."
Samus exhaled, the resolve in her eyes intensifying. She nodded and headed toward her ship, each step filled with a fierce determination. There was no doubt—she'd go to the ends of the universe to find Peach and bring her home.
As the group assembled, Pit walked up to Donkey Kong, a haunted look in his eyes as he glanced at the ruins of the battlefield. He knew Medusa's cruel hand all too well, and seeing her intervention here filled him with dread.
"Pit," Donkey Kong began, "you know Medusa better than any of us. Isn't there a way we can find her? If Peach is in the Underworld, can't we just go there?"
Pit shook his head slowly, his face shadowed with regret. "The Underworld's no ordinary place. It's constantly shifting—full of traps, illusions, and dead ends designed to keep the living out. Even if we somehow got there, Medusa would see us coming miles away. She could hide Peach anywhere, and we'd never find her in time."
Donkey Kong frowned, frustrated but understanding. "So what do we do?"
Pit's eyes hardened, a spark of determination flaring. "We wait for the right moment. Medusa won't be able to resist showing her hand. But when she does, we'll be ready."
As Donkey Kong listened, he felt the weight of his responsibility settle over him. This wasn't just about taking the next step—it was about guiding them all through the storm that lay ahead. "Then we prepare. Hyrule will be our next step, but it won't be the last. Let's get moving—we've got a fight to finish."
Sora's voice cut through the crowd, a note of accomplishment in his tone. "I did it! The path to Hyrule is open!" He held the Keyblade aloft, a shimmering portal glowing beside him—a bright, golden path leading to safety.
As they prepared to move toward Hyrule, they cast one last look at the fading colors of the Mushroom Kingdom, a somber reminder of the Power Star's absence. With the kingdom growing weaker and the Toads visibly suffering, they knew they couldn't delay.
Daisy lingered, taking in the sight of the fading kingdom, her heart heavy with the realization of her role. Looking out at her friends, each bearing their own grief and determination, she felt the weight of her new responsibility more than ever. She knew that, like Rosalina, her strength lay in those around her. Taking a deep breath, she resolved to see this battle through.
Zelda took charge immediately, moving to guide the others. "Amy, Link—take Tails through first," she instructed, her voice calm and steady.
Amy nodded, holding Tails gently as Link positioned himself carefully beside her, supporting Tails with an arm over his shoulder. Together, they stepped through the portal, their forms illuminated by the portal's warm glow as Zelda followed close behind, ensuring their safe passage.
The other heroes moved forward in turn, their expressions wavering, unsure of what was to come, hoping to find safety in Hyrule.
This was no victory, only a reprieve. They had survived, but with Peach's absence and Tails' condition hanging over them, they were painfully aware that their fight was far from over.
