Thirty-Nine

B

"What color are you going to pick?" Alice asks, looking over my shoulder.

I bite my lip and hold up two different bottles of nail polish. "I'm stuck between Red Velvet and Blue Lagoon. What do you think?"

"Hmm. Edward's favorite color is blue, but it's your toes. I'd go with the color you're willing to wear for the next couple of weeks." She pulls a bottle of hot pink polish off the shelf. "Jasper likes when I choose crazy colors."

Having chosen white for her toes, Rosalie is already sitting in the pedicure chair with her feet soaking. I ask her what color she thinks, and she points to the blue.

When Alice invited us out for pedicures, I didn't hesitate to say yes. As much as I'd love to spend my Monday afternoon off with Edward, we've agreed to slow it down and do our own things on Mondays. I stay at my apartment, and he does stuff around his house or hangs out with Jasper.

Do I miss him? Yes, but I also need to have some independence.

The nail tech shows me how to use the massage chair and gets to work on my toes.

I'm not really a girly girl so I don't get pedicures often, but Rebar has me on my feet a lot more than my old job did. I have to say I could get used to the pampering and the girl time.

Once we're all settled, Alice starts interrogating Rosalie on her date with Emmett, and my best friend blushes.

"He's a true gentleman. Not something I'm used to." Rose closes her magazine and places it on her lap. "The man brought me flowers and chocolate on our first date."

"I was wondering where the daisies came from."

"Yeah. He made this really lame joke about me being fresh as a daisy. It was cute." She laughs. "We went to The Bloated Toad and had the best Italian food I've ever had. We spent the entire night just talking, and he really opened up."

Alice gives a happy sigh. "So romantic."

"Are you going to see him again?"

Rose nods. "My schedule is super wonky, but we've made plans to go hiking next Saturday. And before you say it, yes, I'm not much of an outdoorsman, but he's really into it, and I'm really into him."

"That's cute, Rose. I'm glad you're happy."

When we're done with our pedicures, we treat ourselves to margaritas and chips and salsa.
