Merlin accidentally raises Arthur back from the dead, but as a ghost. He's the only person who can see Arthur naturally (without using a potion).
Gwen, Gaius and Arthur are the only people to know about Merlin's magic (although Gwaine has his suspicions). This becomes dangerous when theres talk of a creature feeding off any magic it can find and uncaring of the death and destruction it leaves behind.
Merlin is determined to protect his people, whatever the risk.
Arthur's determined to protect Merlin , whatever the cost.
Notes
Although Gwen and Arthur were dating; after a couple months into the relationship they had both acknowledged that although they do love each other it doesn't compare to their true loves ( Arthur/ Merlin and Gwen/Lancelot) however as Lancelot is sadly dead, Arthur believes Merlin doesn't reciprocate his feelings and the kingdom needed a Queen, they decided to be together for the sake of the kingdom. Kinda like a strong friendship "marriage" rather than actually being in a loving relationship together.
Gwen tried to convince Arthur to actually tell Merlin how he felt out of hopes that at least one of them could have their true love, however Arthur was stubborn and determined not to risk ruining everything over "fixing" something that "wasn't broken".
Also the magic beast in this is loosely based off a "Balhannoth", however nothing within this story is going to be factually accurate.

Chapter 1 : Risen from the dead (kinda)
Arthur
The last thing Arthur remembered was laying in the arms of his best Friend, looking into the eyes he secretly loved, while the world around him faded into blackness.
When everything faded away all was left was a glowing light in the distance, just as there had been when he entered the vail to see his father. With no where left to go but forwards, into the light, Arthur began a slow float towards it.
However, just as he was about to take the final step, he heard a familiar whisper coming from the darkness behind him. The voice sounded so powerful, yet kind, warm and ... safe. It sounded like home.
Although the whisper sounded so quiet, like it was travelling miles through space and time just to reach him, he recognised it instantly. Merlin.
Without hesitation Arthur backed away from the light, turning to follow the sound he had learned to trust above all else. The further he followed it the more he could feel Merlin's presence surrounding him, protecting him as it guided him through the darkness.
Eventually, amongst the darkness stood a figure. Although he could not yet see the figures face he could feel who it was. Behind Merlin was once again a light, however this one shone a very different colour and shape to the last. This light portal was a blue with a yellow glow illuminating off from it - unlike the previous white light glowing from a grey portal. Once Arthur was close enough to see the portal clearly, Merlin's figure disappeared through it, leaving Arthur to follow behind.

Sorry I know this chapters short and the next one will be too, but i think I'll make longer chapters when I get into the centre of the story (although I don't know for definite)
