Chuck vs. The Courtyard Bench

Well, here's what happened in the previous chapter: Chuck was visited by his former Stanford roommate, Bryce. The Olympian was called in as back up by Sarah to help with getting through to Chuck. Fortunately, Bryce was able to get Chuck to talk after something his former roommate said to him, which was Lizzie got into Chuck's head. Chuck ended up confessing to Bryce that he lost himself and in losing himself he didn't feel because of the attack that Lizzie perpetrated. Ultimately, Bryce came up with an idea that Chuck went along with, which was considered absolutely insane. It was considered insane to Detective Lau, Justin Sullivan, Hartley and Vivian. That absolutely insane idea was going to see Lizzie at the Metrepolitan Detention Center in Los Angeles where she was being held. Needless to say, it was like the movie Silence of the Lambs situation as Clarice meets Hannibal Lecter. So, what happens in this chapter? Here are the who, what, where, when, why, how's? Who did Bryce compare Lizzie to after Bentley called him out for laughing under his breath during her interview with Chuck? What did Chuck end up confessing to that he revealed for the time to Bentley? Where internally did Chuck go to finally be no longer burdened by what he was holding on to ever since being attacked? When did the topic of Spider-Man 2 come up? Why does Chuck bring up a particular moment of Peter Parker's determination to get back his powers to become Spider-Man again? How did Chuck try tp prove that he was back to who he was before being attack by Lizzie? Read and find out! I hope you enjoyed the read and leave a comment to share your own thoughts on this particular chapters. As always, reviews are awesome.

Again, if you enjoyed reading my stories and left a comment, I truly appreciate it. Please continue to do so as it gives me the incentive to write more chapters.

"I can't believe it," Lizzie happily conveyed. She slowly stepped forward with a smile on her face that was seemingly a mix of excitement and nervousness. She pressed the palms of her hands against the plexiglass that stood between the two of them. "You're here. When I was told you'd be coming to see," She stopped in mid-sentence as if she was trying to calm herself down. "I would have dressed up for you but I'm wearing this." Lizzie stepped back and briefly peered down at the orange jumpsuit she was wearing." How do I look though?" she asked, twirling around for Chuck to see.

Speaking of Chuck, he didn't say a word after the initial two word greeting, he gave to Lizzie. He simply sat there in his wheelchair in front of the woman who attacked him trying to find the right words to say. At that moment, he was in absolute disbelief in how she was acting and was far more concerned with how she dressed than being incarcerated. Incarcerated not only for the near fatal assault, but the number of additional charges that were added on after the attack against Sarah in the courtroom. In his mind, that dug an even deeper hole for her to the point where she won't ever see the light of day again. Essentially, it sent him on a mental and emotional spiral so much so that he ended up on a savior complex according to Bentley. It went so far as getting a gun from Conway to protect Sarah after he reconsidered breaking up with her thanks to the conversation he had with Hartley and Vivian. True, it was an awesomely boneheaded mistake, he thought to himself.

In any case, the youngest Bartowski sibling noticed Lizzie was off in her own little world. Although she was talking, he wasn't really focused on what she was saying and all he was hearing was best described as Charlie Brown's teacher. As much as he was searching for the words to describe his mindset, it was taking a back seat to the way he was feeling. The one emotion that was building up was anger. Why? He couldn't help but continually replay the moment over and over in his head of him getting stabbed from behind. To him, he acted quickly without even thinking about it and put his own body on the line in order to save the woman he would lay his life down for every time. Fortunately, he didn't die. It was a moment that changed not only his life, but the lives of those in the hospital courtyard who witnessed the horrific attack because of an insanely senseless act of envy and jealousy. Of course, he didn't want to waste the time he was given and got straight to the point.

"I need to say something and," Chuck briefly paused and composed himself. "I need for you to listen to me. I mean really listen to me." the nerd firmly insisted. He emphasized the importance for Lizze to listen to him by the way he was motioning with his hands up, which conveyed the seriousness of the situation.

Instead of complying with Chuck's request, Lizzie started speaking. "I'm sorry. I…I" She stopped for a brief moment expressing a look on her face as if she was going to take responsibility for the consequences of her actions. Unfortunately, that wasn't the case. "I didn't mean to hurt you."

Those 4 words made a significantly powerful impact on Chuck. His instinctive reaction was to explode in anger, but he restrained himself from doing just that. Instead, the nerdy business owner took a deep breath and did his best in calmly responding back to her.

"You didn't mean to hurt me?" Chuck's eyes furrowed. He stared up at Lizzie with such fiery intensity as he was trying to comprehend what she said to him about how she didn't mean to hurt him. "So, you meant to hurt Sarah. Is that it?"

Chuck's response left Lizzie momentarily speechless to the point where she took several steps back. Afterwards, she crossed her arms as if she was holding herself tightly. It wasn't long before the woman nicknamed Pita Girl turned around and stood there in silence. She continued standing there in silence when she faintly mumbled something that Chuck heard.

"Did you say something?"

"I said," Lizzie turned around and faced the man she didn't mean to stab. "You don't understand."

A look of perplexed confusion was expressed on Chuck's face after he heard that. "What don't I understand?"

"You…" She momentarily paused before Lizzie spoke up again. "You have no idea how much you mean to me. All my life I've felt alone, empty and lost. The moment I started watching your show my loneliness, emptiness, and losing my sense of direction were gone. I was filled with joy and happiness. You've become my true north and it's all because of you. Your guidance." she further explained. "Every Friday you spoke to everyone in the Bartowski Brigade, but I know," Lizzie uncrossed her arms and placed both hands over her heart. "I know you were speaking to me."

It took Chuck a moment to let Lizzie's words that seemingly sounded genuine and heartfelt, sink in. Although it sounded genuine and heartfelt, she was sadly misguided and anything that he said or did was unfortunately misconstrued into believing he was mainly speaking to her and only her. The truth of the matter was that he always addressed the Bartowski Brigade as a whole instead of individuals. He did that to show how a group of individuals banded together and always pulled off extraordinary things, especially when it involved any of the past Rockstar Rebels featured on the show. Present and future Rockstar Rebels included he thought to himself. It was that particular thought in which the nerdy business owner focused on in hopes of getting through to her.

"I'm sincerely flattered that I mean so much to you and that I've helped turn your life around. Believe me I am." Chuck politely acknowledged, looking directly at her. He briefly paused and took time in carefully gathering his thoughts in regard to what his next words were going to be. "It's awesome to be inspired and even become an inspiration for someone who'll in turn rise to the occasion," The nerd shook his head and shrugged his shoulders before he resumed speaking. "In all honesty though, when you end up twisting that inspiration into something that puts someone else in danger it ends up turning something that's meant to be positive into an absolute negative." The way he articulated in such a calm demeanor without sounding angrily stern or overly preachy hopefully cracked through Lizzie's fantasy world she mentally and emotionally created. "Understand?"

In that moment, it looked as if what Chuck said to Lizzie was getting through to her. It was the way she was standing there and her seemingly deep, contemplative expression on her face behind the plexiglass were hopeful signs of a breakthrough. A few seconds later, the youngest Bartowski sibling leaned forward a bit anticipating her response.

"So, what you're saying is," Lizzie pursed her lips together. Afterwards, she crossed her arms once again before continuing with what she was going to say. "I'm a huge disappointment in your eyes. Is that it?" she snapped back.

"That wasn't what I was saying," stated Chuck, shaking his head in disbelief. "Not at all." he added, recalling that moment.

At that point, Bryce couldn't help but faintly express an amused chuckle that Bentley quickly zeroed in on.

"Your thoughts on what was amusing?

"Bryce briefly glanced at Chuck who expressed that "seriously" look towards him before he responded to Bentley's question."I was just thinking it went from Hannibal Lecter in Silence of the Lambs to Harley Quinn in Arkham Asylum." he shared, flashing his charming smile. Unfortunately, Bentley didn't think it was amusing. It was evident by the stone face stare he was receiving from the award-winning documentarian, which caused Bryce's charming smile to immediately vanish. "I'll shut up now."

The Olympian sat there and briefly lowered his head like a kid for getting in trouble with the teacher. Of course, he discreetly looked over and silently pleaded for any sort of help from Chuck. Speaking of Chuck, all he gave was the "you're on your own pal" look when you want to help your classmate get out of trouble, but you don't want to get yourself in trouble as well. Fortunately, Bentley decided to get the interview back on track instead of focusing on the momentary interruption caused by Bruce.

"Going back to how Lizzie responded," she noted. "I think she was only focused on what she wanted to hear instead of what she needed to hear." Bentley postulated." You're right," Chuck nodded. "Which is why I needed to go all Walter White from Breaking Bad," he expressed a quizzical look on her face, which showed that she wasn't familiar with the popular television series. This led to Bryce quickly chiming in. "He meant that he wasn't going to have to tread lightly." he clarified. His attention averted from Bentley to his former Stanford roommate who he gave an acknowledging nod towards. Bryce received a nod back in return.

Bryce, Justin, Detective Lau, and Zamir stood there from a distance as they intently watched as Chuck was silently sitting there in his wheelchair. Beforehand, all 4 men were able to listen in on the conversation the two of them were having by way of accessing the intercom system, which was one of the agreed upon stipulations of the visit between both lawyers. Essentially, it's a way to protect their respective clients in case anything went sideways, which would be used in court. In any case, the foursome continued to observe what was going on when Chuck started rolling himself forward towards the plexiglass, to which Bryce, Justin and Detective Lau instantly reacted. It was their reaction that caught Chuck's peripheral version. The nerd turned to look in their direction and signaled them to stop by holding up his left hand. Afterwards, he gave a reassuring nod towards all 3 individuals letting them know he was going to be fine. Afterwards, he returned his focus back to Lizzie and before he spoke up, he took a deep breath.

"What I'm actually saying is," Chuck did his best in not breaking eye contact with her. "There is a shared circle of trust in a place that is considered to be a sacred sanctuary of sorts for Bash At The Bench. It's a safe, energized, warm, and welcoming environment to take part in together in proudly celebrating Friday's Rockstar Rebel." He briefly broke eye contact with Lizzie and took a moment to reflect before he turned his focus back up to her. "In one fell swoop, the atmosphere and environment changed the day. It felt unsafe and that was absolutely disappointing."

"I told you it wasn't my…"

"I'm not finished." he firmly uttered, cutting off Lizzie. It took a brief moment before Chuck proceeded with what he was going to say. "I also changed after that fateful day. I no longer felt safe in a place that I called a second home," There was a slight pause before Chuck resumed speaking. "The same Bartowski Brigade I loved now became the ones I feared. The circle of trust," He stopped for another moment of reflection before he resumed speaking. "It was irrevocably shattered. Therefore, I was shattered."

"That must have weighed on you heavily," stated Bentley, shaking her head. "And you kept that a secret until now?"

Chuck nodded. After breathing out a sense of relief, he revealed more with the award-winning documentarian. "I needed to be honest and truthful with myself and I should have been from the start," The nerd looked left and right at the individuals who were sitting next to him. "With the both of you."

"I'm glad you finally spoke up, little brother," softly smiled Ellie, as tears formed in her eyes. She reached out and held her brother's right hand. Afterwards, she shook her head. "But her?"

"I second that," chimed in Sarah, acknowledging her sister-in-law. "Why go to her of all people?" she added, reaching out to hold her husband's left hand.

The question wasn't answered right away. Chuck took a moment and seriously thought about it. In his mind, it showed how he treated questions as a matter of importance, especially from Sarah and Ellie. Speaking of those two women, they didn't have to wait much longer for the two of them to get the answer they were wondering about.

"As much as it was Bryce's idea," responded Chuck. "I needed to face the person who shattered my world. In order to be whole again, it was necessary for me to be honest and truthful, especially when I confronted Lizzie."

"Am I disappointed in you?" questioned Chuck. "No." he answered, shaking his head. "The person who I'm disappointed with the most," A serious expression was expressed on the nerd's face as he stared up at Lizzie. "Is myself," he revealed.

The surprising revelation revealed by Chuck caught Lizze a bit off guard. It caused her to take a step back. When she did, she ended up bumping into the end of the bed that was in her cell. After briefly glancing back, she took a seat. Afterwards, she was expressing a mixture of perplexed confusion on her face. A few seconds later, she responded.

"Why?"

At that moment, Chuck was finally getting to the heart of the matter that he didn't want to face. A truth that he was avoiding and didn't want to admit to himself. Of course, he never said it out loud because if he did he knew he would not only never live it down, but wouldn't be able to look himself in the mirror. That and looking into the eyes of one of the most important people in his life, which was truly difficult.

"I quit," Chuck uttered. The sound of regret and disappointment was conveyed in the nerd's voice. "It's hard to admit but I did. It's going to be even harder to tell my older sister Ellie." he confessed. "A Bartowski never quits." he faintly breathed out. "This Bartowski did."

It was said with such painful regret behind it that caused Chuck to get briefly emotional, especially when his thoughts turned to the oldest Bartowski sibling. Fortunately, he realized where he was and quickly composed himself. After a few seconds, he was able to get mentally back on track.

"Anyways, I got so focused on being a savior and protector for Sarah that I wasn't focusing on getting myself better." he answered, shaking his head. "Sarah doesn't need saving because she is the strongest woman I know." he added, briefly flashing his toothy smile. "That's one of the reasons I love her and why I'm marrying her. Or at least I think we are."

After Lizzie heard the latter part of what Chuck said, she quickly popped up and was standing in front of the plexiglass within a matter of seconds. A faint but wide-eyed look of hope was expressed on Lizzie's face. "You broke up?" she slyly asked, sounding hopeful. "Sarah called off the engagement?"

"I hope not." Chuck blurted out. He sat there in his wheelchair mentally assessing the status of Charah's relationship. A few seconds later, he shook his head. "We're definitely not. I can still make this right." he insisted.

The hopeful look that Lizzie expressed suddenly deflated after hearing those words coming from Chuck's own mouth. Speaking of the youngest Bartowski sibling, his overall demeanor and body started changing as he pressed further on with what was on his mind.

"In a way, I'm having my Spider-Man 2 moment right now," Chuck shared, recalling the 2nd movie of the crime fighting wallcrawler.

"Your," Lizzie paused and looked utterly puzzled. "What moment?"

"Spider-Man 2. Doc Ock was the main villain of the second movie. Alfred Molina killed that role. The most memorable and iconic scene was when Spidey does everything in his power to stop a runaway train from crashing that Doc Ock caused." he shared. "Spider-Man ends up passing out after saving everybody." The nerdy excitement in his voice was very evident as he continued talking while Lizzie just stood there not really listening to what he was saying.

Lizzie was still looking confused. "Okay," she breathed out.

"Although I don't have any conflicts between my normal life and being a superhero, Toby MaGuire did in his portrayal as Peter Parker/Spider-Man. The stress that he went through in trying to live two separate lives caused him to lose his powers. Ultimately, he made the choice to free himself from the burden of being Spider-Man and ended up embracing his normal life as Peter Parker." he recalled, thinking back on the movie.

"I'm sorry to interrupt," chimed in Bentley. She directed her focus solely on Chuck. "How does a superhero movie relate to the conversation you were having with Lizzie?" she asked, with a mixture of confusion and disbelief.

Chuck was about to answer when Bryce suddenly chimed in. "Sorry about that. Chuck tends to nerd out and when that happens, he gets a bit off track. I'm sure Spider-Man 2 relates somehow and is getting to the point," His attention averted from Bentley to Chuck. "Right Chuckles?"

"Yeah," nodded Chuck. After seeing the annoyed expression on Bentley's face, he fast forwarded to the point he needed to make. "I'm getting there right now." he added, wanting to avoid suffering any consequences.

"The reason I'm here is to say that I'm not a quitter," Chuck announced. "I was stupid and somewhere along the line I forgot that I'm a Bartowski," he firmly stated "But not anymore," he emphatically declared. After he said that, he suddenly felt a slight twitch in his right leg. Although it was faint, it was a sign of something tremendously positive to the point where it empowered him to continue speaking. "And just like Peter Parker, I'm determined to get back what was taken from me," he confidently proclaimed.

"And what is that exactly?" questioned Lizzie.

Instead of responding, Chuck just sat there silently in his wheelchair with his eyes closed. What he was doing while he was sitting there was envisioning the scene in Spider-Man 2 where a very serious and determined Peter Parker was on a rooftop of a building. In somewhat similar fashion, Chuck was mentally doing the same thing as he repeated the following line that Peter uttered before he jumped.

"Strong focus on what I want." he softly breathed out. His eyes still closed.

Lizzie still looked puzzled because she didn't have any idea what was happening. "What are you doing?"

As Lizzie was watching on with confusion, the four individuals who were listening to their entire conversation were also confused and wondering what was going on as well. Detective Lau and Justin immediately turned to Bryce for answer.

"What's going on?" whispered Lau.

Justin chimed in after whispering an additional question. "Do you know what he's doing?"

Bryce looked at both men. "The hell if I know." he whispered back, shrugging his shoulders.

At that point, Zamir stepped in and spoke up in a whisper. "If any harm comes to my client…"

The attorney for Lizzie Shafai didn't get to finish what he was going to say. Why? Lizzie's voice was heard on the intercom system."

"Seriously!? You're meditating right now?"

All 4 men immediately shifted their attention down the corridor. When they did, the foursome saw Chuck continuing to sit silently in his wheelchair. He wasn't moving a muscle, and it seemed to them that he was going to stay in that position forever. He was so still it was like he was one of those department store mannequins. A few seconds later Chuck suddenly rolled his wheelchair back just a bit before he stopped. Afterwards, he finally lifted his head and opened his eyes. It was long before he started moving again. He reached down on both sides to lock the wheels of his wheelchair in place. The silence was palpable in the corridor of the maximum-security wing of the single occupant cells as all eyes were transfixed on what Chuck's next move was.

Speaking of the nerd, he continued sitting there not saying a word. In his mind, he was still envisioning the moment in Spider-Man 2 where Peter turned around and prepared himself to quite literally take a leap of faith, which he was about to do. Although Peter was physically running and leaped off the edge of the building in the movie, Chuck was preparing himself to do sort of the same thing, but in a more mental way. In his mind, he kept repeating something and "I'm back" weren't those words. Remember who you are. It's those 4 words that he continually repeated to get him not only motivated mentally, but physically as well. As he continued mentally repeating those 4 words with his eyes closed, he took in and released several deep breaths before he finally stopped. There was a momentary pause before he made his next move.

Of course, everyone was totally mesmerized and waited with bated breath on what Chuck was going to do next, especially Lizzie. They would soon find out as he leaned forward and slowly reached down to move his right leg forward. To be more specific, he took his right foot off the footplate and placed it on the corridor floor. When he was done, he lifted that same right footplate out of the way. Afterwards, he repeated the same process with his left leg and footplate. Once he was finished, he leaned back and rested his arms on the armrest of his wheelchair. By that point, he had already opened his eyes. In any case, all 5 individuals who witnessed what was unfolding before their very eyes now knew what Chuck was going to do next or at least attempt to. In the minds of Detective Lau, his attorney Justin, and Bryce they saw how determined the nerd was and wanted to not only prove something to Lizzie but make an empathic statement as well.

It was truly a sight to behold as they continued to be completely focused on Chuck. They watched as he slid his arms back and tightly gripped the armrests with his hands. Afterwards, he lifted himself up a bit and scooted forward towards the edge of his wheelchair. Although his move forward seemed effortless, there was a sense of uncertainty mixed with nervous confidence as he was preparing to make a literal stand, which Bryce could tell from where he stood. Speaking of the Olympian, he was mentally rooting on his former Stanford roommate knowing what he was attempting was absolutely going to be a 50/50 shot. At that moment, the musical instrumental to Chariots of Fire suddenly popped into his mind for some reason. He didn't know why but it did. Fortunately, he was able to shake the iconic musical instrumental out of his thoughts knowing full well Mr. Bean would have ended up appearing and become an absolute total distraction for him.

In any case, it was from Bryce's point of view that Chuck looked as if he was mentally psyching himself up before rising to make a literal stand in front of the person who caused him to end up in a wheelchair in the first place. Bryce stood there with his left arm tucked underneath his right elbow. As for his right hand, it was tightly clenched into a fist. It was that same right fist that was against his mouth as he watched intently Chuck about to rise up and make his stand.

"You got this, dude." Bryce softly breathed out.

The entire area of the single occupant cell of the maximum-security wing Metropolitan Detention Center was so silent at the moment a pin could be heard if it were dropped right now. It probably won't be heard by Chuck as he was totally focused on showing that it's mind over matter. Of course, pushing himself up was just half the battle while the other half was being able to keep his balance long enough to accomplish what he set out to do. As he was pushing himself up into a standing position, he kept mentally repeating the following two words that Peter Parker screamed out after he jumped off the roof of the building: I'm back.

Chuck was halfway up into a standing position when he took the risk and let go of the armrests of his wheelchair. When he did, he was visibly unsteady to the point where he was rocking back and forth. In his mind, the youngest Bartowski sibling couldn't help imagining himself doing the Pee Wee Herman Tequila dance the way he was moving his arms backwards and forwards. It was a moment that led everyone to not only hold their breath, but caused all 5 individuals' eyes to completely go widen. A few seconds later, they all saw Chuck standing straight up and looking straight at Lizzie.

"I'm back!" Chuck proudly proclaimed. The words echoed within the corridor.

Unfortunately, the nerdy business owner didn't get time to celebrate. Why? He endured the same fate as Peter Parker. Granted, Chuck didn't get entangled in a clothesline when his leap of faith failed. Peter ended up hitting a wall after swinging into it. Afterwards, he crashed into some parked cars, which caused him to hurt his back. No. That didn't actually happen. What happened instead was his knees buckled, and it caused his legs to go out from underneath him. When they did, he instantly dropped and fell down onto the corridor floor much to his unfortunate embarrassment.

There were a number of reactions after learning from Bentley what happened with Chuck and his failed attempt at standing up in front of Lizzie. Of course, his close circle of friends and family were proud of him for even trying while at the same expressed pained oohs. Casey simply responded with his usual smirk and grunt. Emmitt Milbarge, on the other hand, laughed uncontrollably to the point where he fell off his interview chair. As for Chuck himself, he reflected on what happened and gave his honest response.

"Yeah," Chuck uttered, recalling that moment. "Not one of my finest moments." he added, shaking his head.

"At least you tried." uttered Bryce, shrugging his shoulders.

"Despite that," chimed in Bentley. "We all know now it didn't deter you from giving up." she pointed out.

Chuck nodded. "A Bartowski never quits." he firmly stated.

"For the most part," Bentley uttered. She paused before she resumed speaking. "You were able to get some closure and get back what was taken from you." she further added. After briefly peering down at her noted cards, Bentley returned her attention to Chuck. He was the only one there at that moment to be interviewed. "I think I know the answer to this, but I'll still ask. Who was the person you called or went to see after getting your life back?"

Chuck didn't answer right away. He sat there in his chair momentarily silent before he spoke up. "As much as I wanted to go see and speak to Sarah, I knew the timing of it wasn't quite right." he replied. "Besides, I had a plan brewing that would lead up to the biggest apology that I would ever give to her."
Bentley quickly piggybacked on what Chuck shared. "Of course, we now know what that plan was that you had brewing, especially for the audience who followed you from day 1." she retorted.

A nod was given by Chuck acknowledging Bentley's response. "Before I worked on my plan, I needed to make things right with one other person first," he revealed. The person who I also quit on." he added. The sound of regret and disappointment expressed in his voice.

The interview with Chuck suddenly switched to Bentley back in the studio. The interview she was having with Chuck was playing but with no sound on the flatscreen behind her. As she stood there in front of it, the award-winning documentarian spoke up.

"After the break, you'll find out who the other person Chuck quit on and need to make things right between the two of them." Bentley shared. "There's more to come on Nationwide Community Spotlight. You don't want to miss out." she further added. Afterwards, Bentley walked off with the camera focusing on the interview that was still playing without sound between her and Chuck.
