Chapter 16: Buying A Magic Item From This Decrepit Shop!
Part 1
A new week meant more allowance.
Although the 1,000 yen that my father gave me that morning wasn't that much compared to my current funds, it was still free money I wouldn't turn down.
"This money will motivate me to go to school, father."
He sighed, shaking his head.
"As a father, I'm proud of you for going to school consistently, but when you say things like that…"
I ended up giving mixed feelings to my father.
I went to school after having the breakfast my mother made for me.
On the way there...
"Morning, senpai!"
Rin walked up to me and started talking to me.
Even though I had to cancel our date… She was still talking to me.
If it was the other way around, I'd probably sulk all day and not even go to school.
Besides… I even did all of that last night with Aqua…
Maybe I'm kind of a scumbag?
"Hm? Senpai… You look kind of upset…"
"Ah, well… I just feel bad for canceling last time…"
"It's fine! Life happens! Besides, I know you were really excited about it, so you wouldn't cancel on me unless you had a good reason…"
How is she so mature?!
She's a year younger than me, isn't she?!
She's already more mature than Darkness who is older than the both of us! I said,
"If it's cool with you, we can do the date again this Sunday…"
"I'm alright with that! I still haven't shown you my new swimsuit yet… Look forward to it, senpai!"
Am I an eroge protagonist, or what?!
This scenario is just too good to be true…
After that pleasant exchange in the morning, I went to class.
With my newfound motivation to improve myself, I made sure to take Appuri-chan's advice and focused on everything the teacher said.
Then, during lunch time, instead of just eating by myself…
Forming bonds with other people gives lots of stat bonuses and even skills.
Yet, I wasn't actively trying to socialize with other people, even my classmates.
While looking around for a group to talk to, I heard some guys talking about the MMO I used to play a lot.
They were talking about a dungeon that was hard to beat.
I took this chance and walked up to them and said,
"Actually, if you use this exploit, it's pretty easy to beat that dungeon…"
Out of goodwill, I went ahead and told them about the cheese tactic I found.
"Ohh! Satou, I didn't know you played that game!"
"We'll try it out when we get home later!"
"...I didn't even know that Satou could speak."
Since I rarely interacted with anyone, they were surprised that I went up to talk to them.
"Your 'Charisma' and 'Bravery' has increased by +1!"
Appuri-chan said, after I went back to my own seat after talking to those guys.
I guess that stepping out of my comfort zone really does help…
Does that mean that I'll get even more increases if I talk to the most popular girls in class?!
No, that's too big of a hurdle for me.
…
...
After school, I headed over to practice.
When I got to the field, I saw that Mitsurugi was there. The other members of the club were surrounding him, asking him questions about his injury.
"I can't believe you're clumsy enough to hurt yourself like that, captain!"
"What are we gonna do if you get injured for the rest of the season?!"
"Yosh! Our national hopes are still alive with Mitsurugi here!"
He's as beloved as ever.
When he saw me, he came up to me and said,
"Thanks for taking care of the team when I was gone. I heard you played well last time."
It was awkward hearing him praise me.
"Well, now that you're back, I guess I don't have to work as hard anymore."
"Liar. I heard you've been working even harder recently."
Who's the one who snitched?!
Mitsurugi's expression turned serious. He said,
"Listen, Satou… I got attacked by a Dullahan last time and…"
"Yeah, I know. I already defeated him."
"Ehh?!"
Mitsurugi looked at me with disbelief written all over his face.
"Wait, seriously?! How?! That guy was really powerful! He could even summon a horde of undead! He even put a death curse mark on me that Aqua-sama had to dispel!"
He didn't do that against me, though.
Ah… Maybe he had a limited supply of undead minions and curse marks. He used them all fighting Mitsurugi and the other cheat users.
If Beldia had some abilities he didn't use against me, he must have used them against the other app users and ran out of juice when it came time to face me.
Otherwise, I probably wouldn't have been able to take him out with just Darkness fighting with me.
"Their deaths were not in vain…"
"I don't think anyone died, Satou. More importantly… How did you manage to defeat that Dullahan?!"
"Well… He always threw his head up in the air for some reason, so I just blew the helmet away with wind magic and then filled his body with water magic and froze it. He couldn't move and he took damage from the water since he's an undead."
"...Satou… Are you actually a combat genius?!"
Is what I said really that mind blowing?
It seems like common sense to me.
Then again, Mitsurugi was a normie who didn't look like he played that many games or watched that many anime.
As for me, I had been imagining myself in such fantastical battles since I was a kid, daydreaming in class about how I'd take on powerful opponents like dragons and evil wizards.
…In that sense, maybe I'm more prepared for this whole war against the Demon King than I thought.
I guess being a loner otaku who spends all day playing games and watching anime has its benefits.
…Only when the world is ending through supernatural means, though.
If there's no such threats going on, such otaku would be swept under the rug by society as a failure in life.
As practice resumed, I tried to go at the pace I went last time, pushing myself through my limits.
"Your 'Dexterity', 'Speed', 'Stamina' and 'Willpower' increased by +1!"
I received quite a bountiful yield once more.
"Oh… You really are working hard, Satou."
Mitsurugi said, once practice was over.
"With all this fighting going on, it's better to be prepared."
"You're finally taking things seriously, huh?"
"Did you think I wasn't before?"
With the way he didn't answer me, he probably did think that way. He said,
"A-Anyway, want to go to the station with me? There's that smoothie place that gives 'Stamina' increases, right?"
With Mitsurugi inviting me, we went over to 'Sunshine Smoothie'.
I bought a kale smoothie, while Mitsurugi got a strawberry-banana smoothie.
"Your 'Stamina' increased by +1!"
While we were drinking our smoothies, Mitsurugi said,
"You know, I'm glad that you dealt with the threat, but I'm kind of unsatisfied. I wanted a rematch with that Dullahan…"
"Saying lines like that is why you lost in the first place."
"Huh? What do you mean?"
He's not aware of such cliches and flags, huh?
That's what's holding him back.
Since I learned a few things from Mitsurugi, I decided to teach him some things, too.
"Listen, Mitsurugi. You never want to be the first one to fight a new opponent. That will guarantee that you lose."
"I see… Is that because there's no information on the opponent yet, so it would be foolish to fight them despite knowing nothing about them?"
"No, because the one who fights the enemy first will always be defeated to show how strong the new enemy is."
"Huh? What are you talking about, Satou?"
"Just trust me, Mitsurugi. You always want to be the last one to fight the enemy, never the first. Also, never volunteer yourself to fight the enemy with an arrogant smirk on your face, while telling your allies cliche lines like, 'Stay back, this one's mine!', or 'I should be enough to defeat him!'. That will guarantee that you will suffer a humiliating defeat."
"...I fail to see how any of these things are relevant."
Mitsurugi gave me a confused look, not understanding what I meant at all.
"Sigh… I'm going to recommend some manga to you, Mitsurugi. I want you to study them well. Hopefully, you will understand what I mean once you read them…"
"What does reading manga have anything to do with learning how to fight better, Satou?!"
"It has to do with everything!"
I spent the next hour or so trying to lecture Mitsurugi about these important pieces of knowledge.
Once we separated, Appuri-chan came out and said,
"Your bond with Mitsurugi Kyouya has deepened!"
Mitsurugi Kyouya (Soccer Club Ace), Bond Rank: 5
At Rank 5, Mitsurugi Kyouya entrusts you with the soccer team, even when he's gone. He has no doubts about your capabilities and willingness to improve, after he's seen you pushing your limits in practice. He has begun to view you as a rival of sorts, someone that he must catch up to, no matter what. Staying on the soccer team and working hard in practice will deepen your bond with him.
Bond Reward: Signature Weapon Rank-up
He viewed me as a rival, huh?
Oh, no. That sealed his fate.
I'm sorry, Mitsurugi… You're officially a jobber now.
Part 2
After talking to Mitsurugi, I made my way to the dungeon.
It had been a while, so I wanted to check up on the kobolds.
On the way there, I checked the new bond upgrade I got from Mitsurugi.
I checked the new rank-up for signature weapon.
[Signature Weapon] Skill Rank: 2, Passive Skill
Assign one of the weapons in your inventory as your 'Signature Weapon'. This weapon gains +10 durability and +1 weapon damage. This weapon won't be destroyed even if it falls below 0 'Durability', but you can't use it again until you fix it.
It was quite a big improvement from the rank 1 skill.
Before entering the dungeon, I also wanted to spend the 2 skill points I got from leveling up twice after defeating Beldia.
I decided to go ahead and put [Elementary Magic] at max rank
Now, [Elementary Magic] only costs 1 MP to cast…
It is now my most efficient ability.
My build was all over the place in terms of skill optimization, but I seemed to get a lot of success from thief skills and magic skills.
I didn't really know which skill to focus on when I leveled up again, though.
[Steal] is really useful, but the information gathering ability of [Enemy Reading] is also tempting.
I could also look to upgrade the weapon related skills.
While thinking about those things, I soon arrived at the dungeon entrance…
"Full Equip…"
"Equipping all gear…!"
With the voice command, Appuri-chan made the gear materialize over my body.
Wearing all of this battle equipment over my school uniform, I felt like a Light Novel protagonist…
All chuunibyou have delusions of fighting monsters while wearing their school uniform, with a katana by their side.
Not that I was chuunibyou.
"..."
I couldn't resist and took out my phone, leaning it against the dungeon wall.
"Appuri-chan, I want you to take pictures of me…"
"...You're using an advanced AI like me as an overglorified selfie timer?"
"Just do it!"
I posed in front of the camera as I struck poses with my battle gear and school uniform.
"Ohh…! This looks like some high quality cosplay!"
"...That's because you're wearing real armor and weapons."
While I was getting carried away posing…
"Oh? It seems that the recent victory over Beldia has given this boy an inflated ego… Now you're reverting back to your childhood delusions of grandeur… Ah! The feeling of shame at being caught in the act! How delicious!"
By the way, I saw Vanir at the entrance and he made me bring him along.
"Why are you still all the way down here in these lower levels, Vanir?"
"...That distasteful goddess is still getting in my way. I'm trying to find ways to elude her."
"The one with the silver-hair and the mask, huh?"
It really did sound like someone I knew, but I couldn't imagine that they were the one antagonizing Vanir.
"Alright, well, if you're busy Vanir, you could always help me grind some levels…"
"Foolish boy! We've already been over this! Besides, I am merely gathering ingredients for that decrepit Lich. She intends to make some potions to sell, although I'm doubtful if they will..."
With this mystery goddess interfering, Vanir had to reconsider his dungeon take-over plan.
He switched over to the 'raise money to buy a dungeon' plan.
That was a relief for me, since I didn't know what would happen if Vanir actually managed to take over this dungeon.
He wouldn't harm the adventurers, but his annoying antics would make a lot of hero candidates quit their jobs.
That would decrease the amount of meat shields… I mean, the fighting force against the Demon King army.
"By the way, after you're finished cruelly extorting those kobolds, you should come over to the store and buy some magic items later, boy… You have some wealth after selling Beldia's sword, do you not?"
This mind reader is a pain to deal with.
"Ah… I'll think about it…"
"Y-You…! Thinking that there's no use going there to buy items since they're useless, but you're more than happy to go there to gaze upon Wiz's ample bosom! Moihahaha! You sure are a lecher!"
This mind reader is really a big pain in the ass!
I ditched him immediately and headed into the dungeon.
Since I was level 7 now, while going through the first floor...
"Gyak!"
...When some goblins attacked me, I was able to take care of them without even using any skills.
Using Chunchunmaru, I swiftly dispatched the goblins who attacked me.
…This is it! This is the best part of RPGs!
After getting to the mid-game, there is usually a power spike that will let the player go down to the lower levels and absolutely demolish all the mob monsters.
This satisfying feeling of beating up on those weaker than you is amazing!
"Kazuma-san! Since you are now way more powerful than these goblins, they will give way less exp when you defeat them than they did before!"
Ah… There's also that feature…
Even with how much I enjoyed beating up the weaklings, I didn't gain much exp from it.
Quickly getting bored, I moved up to the next floor, where those kobolds were.
When I made it to their hiding spot, after crawling through the tunnel…
"Wan… Wan… Wan…!"
…Happily talking to the kobolds was Yunyun.
"What are you doing here, Yunyun?"
"Eeek?!"
Frightened, she turned around and looked at me with wide eyes.
She was kneeling down, talking eye-level to one of the kobolds.
"K-K-Kazuma-san…! Um… I wasn't talking to these kobolds because I felt lonely, or anything! I don't come here for at least a couple hours a day to socialize, if that's what you're thinking?!"
Open books like Yunyun are always easy to deal with.
"I see… Well, I came here to extort them, so…"
"You can't?!"
Yunyun stood up and spread her arms out defensively over the kobolds.
"...Huh? Oi, Yunyun… Are you getting in the way of my money collection…?"
"Eeep?! Kazuma-san, your eyes are really scary right now?!"
With how productive these kobold slave workers were, I let out some hostility once I saw Yunyun trying to interfere.
"Listen, Yunyun! These kobolds aren't your friends! They are a source of money for us! Do you understand?!"
"B-But…! They're surprisingly friendly! And their culture is actually very similar to ours! Did you know that kobolds celebrate a holiday called Kobomas, on the same day we celebrate Christmas?! They make sculptures of each other and give them to each other as gifts!"
"I don't care! Don't tell me such a poignant story when I'm just trying to extort these guys!"
Trying to appeal to my morality like that…
Money comes first!
After being broke for so long, I became a bit obsessed with the concept of money.
I don't care if these kobolds are all one big happy family. I need money!
I moved past Yunyun and made my way to the kobolds.
"Grrrr…!"
Like before, there was that one young kobold who was giving me a defiant glare.
This brat never gives up, huh?
"Huh?! What are you looking at, you insolent brat?!"
"Kazuma-san?! Were you always this cruel?!"
I turned to Yunyun and said,
"Listen, Yunyun, I'll hang out with you after this, so forget about the kobolds already."
"...Kobolds? What kobolds?"
She's surprisingly coldhearted.
Seeing that their last bastion of hope surrendered herself to me, the kobolds hung their heads in defeat and offered me the new equipment they made.
I took this equipment one at a time into my inventory to sell them.
In total, I made 10,000 yen from the kobolds.
"Hahaha! Not bad! Keep working hard for my sake from now on! Kyekekekeke!"
The young kobold glared at me as I let out a sinister laugh I didn't even know I was capable of making.
"Kazuma-san… Your evil deed made you lose -1 'Faith'..."
I still didn't even know what faith did, so I didn't care about the loss.
Part 4
Once I received the money from the kobolds, Yunyun followed me on my way out.
"U-Um… You promised to hang out with me, so…"
"Ah, then let's go to a cafe…"
"...! T-Then let's go!"
She followed behind me like an excited puppy.
…Well, she was going 'wan, wan' with the Kobolds earlier.
I took her to the usual cafe I went to.
Not only was it close to the dungeon, but it also gave out a charm bonus…
This cafe is no longer trending! You will no longer receive an extra bonus to 'Charisma'! I'm sure the coffee still tastes great, though!
Why are normies so fickle with their tastes?!
Trends come and go quickly, huh…
Well, at least this cafe lasted longer than the smoothie place.
Even with the bonus gone, there was still the original +1 bonus to 'Charisma' that came with the coffee.
When we ordered our coffee and sat down…
"...! E-Eh?! It seems that my 'Charisma' has increased?!"
Yunyun was surprised to learn about this stat bonus.
"Hm? Did you not know about this cafe?"
"No, I didn't! I see… If I drink enough of this coffee, I'll become a charismatic person with many friends…!"
"It's limited to once a week."
"How disappointing…!"
I hated to be the bearer of bad news, but I didn't want Yunyun to get the wrong idea.
Yunyun kept glancing at me as we sipped our coffee…
This is a bit awkward.
Since Yunyun is a shy girl, I didn't know what to talk to her about.
Thankfully, she was the one who broke the silence.
"I'll be really grateful if Kazuma-san introduces me to nice places like this in the future!"
"Oh… Well, it's not like I know other places… But I suppose I can try looking for some."
Since I had the 'Service Locator' feature on my app, I could search for more places like this cafe.
"Ehe… You're so kind, Kazuma-san! Unlike Megumin!"
She had a frown on her face as she said this.
"Hm? Are you two having a fight right now?"
"...Kind of. She found me yesterday walking around without my red contact lenses… She got mad because I wasn't playing up to the 'Crimson Demon' backstory she made up."
She'd probably get even more mad if she heard Yunyun call the Crimson Demon thing a made up backstory.
"Why is Megumin so obsessed with that chuunibyou stuff, anyway?"
"I'm not too sure. She's always been like that for as long as I remember. Her family is pretty weird, too…"
"Ah, so it runs in the family."
There's nothing you can do if the weirdness is genetic.
And Megumin is even making her friend go along with this weirdness.
I didn't want to keep Yunyun out for too long during a school day, although she did want to hang out for much longer.
"I promise we can hang out again another time…"
"D-Do you really promise, Kazuma-san?! You won't just say that and pretend you got amnesia the next day, right?!"
I really need to talk to Megumin about treating her friends better.
After treating Yunyun to her drink, we parted ways from the cafe.
"Your bond with Yunyun has increased!"
Yunyun (Lonely Stalker), Bond Rank: 3
At Rank 3, Yunyun is looking forward to hanging out with you more often. Her heart fluttered a bit when you called her by her first name. If you keep flirting with her, she might develop feelings for you…? Although if she gets too attached to you, it could end up being problematic.
Bond Reward: You learn the skill [Solo-Levelling]!
[Solo-Levelling] Skill Rank: 1, Passive Skill
You earn an extra +1 EXP when you go to the dungeon by yourself and defeat a monster.
Since I normally went to the dungeon by myself, that skill could end up being useful.
Rather, the way the skill accurately reflected Yunyun's personality was kind of sad.
Aside from that, it seemed that Yunyun was starting to develop feelings for me.
What's with me recently?
I was getting attention from all kinds of girls.
The me from before would have celebrated this newfound popularity, but…
"Hm… What should I do…?"
Instead, I felt conflicted.
…
…
Even though Vanir might be tricking me, I still headed over to Wiz's store.
"Ah! Kazuma-san! Thank you for coming again!"
At the very least, I was greeted with the sight of a happy Wiz.
And a happy Wiz is a bouncy Wiz.
My sight-seeing was immediately ruined when Vanir popped out from behind the counter.
"Ah, if it isn't the perverted boy who came over here just to gawk at the Lich's bosom… Even though you were already gawking at a younger girl's bosom earlier, aren't you too greedy…?"
He knew that I was with Yunyun earlier, huh?
"Oi, oi, enough talk about bosoms… Do you have anything useful to sell that won't put me into debt if I buy it?"
That seems like a tall order when Wiz is involved.
"Ah… But they're all useful…"
I turned to Vanir, expecting him to give me a better answer than Wiz, who seemed to be completely delusional about her own products.
Only to see that he already made his escape.
He didn't want to face reality too, huh?
He probably thought that it was possible to turn Wiz's store around once he took over.
For an all-seeing devil, he sure is short-sighted.
Wiz was smiling as she took out several items from the shelves and placed it on the counter.
She gestured to one that looked like a katana.
"I already have a katana…"
I said, when I looked at the sheathed sword.
When I took it out from its sheath, I did a double take.
"T-This is…!"
It's a reverse-blade sword!
"Is this that famous…?!"
"This sword is special, Kazuma-san! Although it appears to be a reverse-blade sword, that's only an illusion! It's actually a normal edged blade!"
"Then what's the point?"
I put away the sword, ashamed that I got excited for a second.
Having a reverse-blade sword, a sakabato, and acting like the Hitokiri Battousai is the fantasy of many otaku suffering from chuunibyou.
Not that I have chuunibyou.
"...Show me the next item, Wiz."
"A-Ah… Well, the next item is this one! It's a cloud that lets the user fly around on it if they have a righteous heart!"
"That's really amazing?!"
"Ah, but if you've ever had an impure thought in your life, you won't be able to use it."
"Then it's useless for me."
I'm pretty sure it's useless to almost every sentient being.
After all, I was already having impure thoughts at this moment as I stared at Wiz's chest.
"O-Oh… Then I suppose you won't be interested in this item…"
She gestured to the next item, a ring.
"What does this do?"
"It allows the user to store a spell in it, which they can cast for free at a later time… I know, it's not very useful."
Wait, isn't this actually a really useful item?
It's more useful than anything else she showed.
The fact that Wiz didn't think the item was good showed that it had promise.
"...Wait, is there any other stupid twist to it?"
"N-None of my items have a stupid twist!"
Just to make sure, I used [Lore Reading] on the item.
I wasn't sure if that skill would tell me anything, but it did give me a description of the item.
The item description floated over my eyes in blue text.
"...It seems that Wiz is telling the truth."
"I wouldn't lie about that!"
After deactivating [Lore Reading], I looked at Wiz and said,
"Alright, how much is it?"
"It's 50,000 yen!"
"Forget it!"
I wasn't about to use half of the funds I got from Beldia just for one item.
"E-Ehhh?! F-Fine…! I'll lower it to 45,000!"
"Hmm… That's still too high."
"I need to make a profit, please!"
She started tearing up and sniffed.
"...Then I'll pay you 35,000 yen. Final offer."
"T-That's not a lot…"
I looked around at the empty store to prove a point. Her lips started trembling and she ended up sighing.
"A-Alright! You win! 35,000 yen is the final price!"
I felt a bit bad getting such a big bargain, but Wiz is a proper business owner. She's responsible for her own business.
After I handed her the money, Wiz bowed to me.
"T-Thank you for your business! Maybe I can eat proper meals for a while!"
Now I feel even more guilty for getting a bargain.
Your bond with Wiz has deepened!
Wiz (Lich Shopkeeper), Bond Rank: 2
At Rank 2, Wiz sees you as a cheap customer who will seek huge bargains when buying her items. With that said, you are now one of her top customers… Actually, you might be her only customer. Shopping in the store will deepen your bond with her.
Bond Reward: You learn the skill [Drain Touch]!
[Drain Touch] Skill Rank: 1, Active Skill
After making contact with the target, you can deal 2 Necrotic damage to the target and absorb 2 Health Points, Mana Points and Stamina Points per second that you stay in contact with the target. You can also distribute Health Points, Mana Points and Stamina Points to other targets.
T-This skill is a game changer!
Not only does it have firepower, but it also fixes my low mana and health stat!
"...Your items are useless, Wiz, but you're useful in a lot of other ways."
"That sounds really ominous when you say it, Kazuma-san…"
Wiz seemed to get the wrong idea when I said that, as she covered up her chest.
Part 5
After making the purchase, I left Wiz's store and went home.
I took my weekly charisma lessons from Kazuto, but this time, I felt like I didn't even need his lessons.
After all, I was clearly in my popular period.
"Girls will like you more if they get jealous of other girls, it brings out the possessiveness instinct in them… Oi, are you listening, nii-san?"
His advice was becoming more like that of a sleazy pick-up artist.
Once the lessons finished, I went upstairs and Appuri-chan notified me of the lesson reward.
"Your brother's awful advice raised your 'Charisma' by +1!"
"If it's that awful, then why is it raising my charisma?"
"Well, it's awful in the sense that it's scummy but it also works… In a scummy kinda way."
She said scummy twice.
I was concerned that my little brother was becoming some kind of playboy, but I wasn't any better in that regard.
Looking through my bond rank-up list, half of the girls there had some kind of crush or the beginnings of a romantic interest in me, with Yunyun as the latest addition on that list.
Not to mention that things between me and Aqua were heating up.
The sight of her breasts were still firmly rooted in my mind, as well as the feeling of her hand around my member.
"Uehehehe!"
"What an awful sound you're making."
While I was taking a bath, I used my private time to think about all the girls who were interested in me.
Based on what the bond descriptions said, Aqua, Rin, Megumin, Yunyun and Darkness, in her own twisted way, were likely developing feelings for me.
Aside from the obvious excitement I felt, there was also a sense of trepidation and uncertainty.
This wasn't an eroge. This was real life, with real people who had different personalities and views on morality.
I couldn't just put them all in one room and announce, 'You're all part of my harem now!'
Did I even want a harem?
Realistically, it seemed like a pain in the ass. Sure, the idea of dating a bunch of beautiful girls was amazing, but that was only considering the good parts of such an arrangement.
I imagined that romance involving multiple people was a lot messier than what was depicted in anime and manga.
So, did that mean that I should stick to just one girl?
If I did that, who would I choose? Would I choose Aqua, who I've fooled around with already? Or Rin, who I've gone on dates with?
Yunyun's cute, Megumin has her own charms, and Darkness…
...Well, she's got her body.
Did I even have feelings for them? Real feelings, not just the lust I felt for Aqua, or the sense of excitement whenever Rin flirted with me at school.
I thought about these things while I was in the bath. It was a long time coming, but the threat of Beldia and Vanir took up a lot of my focus.
It was when my bond with Yunyun got a rank-up earlier, that I started seriously thinking about the girls in my life.
As I got out of the bath, I saw Aqua in the hallway.
"Took you long enough! Why were you in there so long?!"
I couldn't exactly tell her about what I was thinking about. I said,
"I was thoroughly cleaning 'down there' in case something happens tonight…"
She raised a brow and grinned,
"You're expecting something more to happen, huh? Kazuma sure is greedy…"
Neither confirming nor denying anything, she entered the bathroom and closed the door.
As I was thinking hard about my relationships with these girls, I recalled the advice Rin gave me.
Just have fun. You're only a teenager once.
Aqua also told me similar things, saying that she lived her life by following her immediate desires.
Instead of thinking twice about everything, I should trust my instincts more. That doesn't mean I should do whatever I want without worrying about the consequences. It means that I should go along with the flow instead of trying to maneuver through life with some grand strategy.
In my room, I got to reading the third book Rin recommended to me from the bookstore. I had been so busy with the Beldia threat that I couldn't finish reading all of them until now.
"Your 'Creativity' increased by +1!"
Coincidently, the book tells the story of a king's harem of concubines and how he handled having all sorts of women.
"I see… So that's how it is…"
"Kazuma-san, you sure are taking this book seriously…"
"This king's troubles sure are relatable…"
When I finished reading, Aqua came into my room, freshly bathed. She was wearing a blue tank-top and gray short shorts.
When I saw her, all my worries disappeared.
Harem or not, as long as I didn't go out of my way to break anyone's heart…
It was fine to have some fun, right?
"You look like you came upon a great discovery, Kazuma."
Aqua said, joining me on the bed.
"I decided to live life following the main tenets of the Axis cult…"
"Does that mean you decided to join?!"
"No way."
She pouted but ended up smiling.
"You'll join someday, Kazuma…"
She whispered huskily as she leaned in and kissed me.
It didn't take long for us to intensify our actions, building up from gentle kisses to a passionate make-out session.
I tested out the waters by reaching up to cup her breasts through her top. When she responded with an appreciative moan, I squeezed them harder.
Aqua responded by reaching down to grab my bulge. I let out a groan into her mouth as we kissed.
When I felt a tug on my shorts, I lifted my butt and let her yank it down, along with my boxers. Then I felt those soft hands around my shaft.
"Hah… I can get used to this…"
I gasped, as she started jerking me off.
"Maybe I shouldn't spoil you…"
I kissed her again before she could continue that sentence.
I lasted a bit longer than last time, but the sensations were still too much for a virgin like me. I came after a few minutes of Aqua pumping my member.
As she watched me clean up the mess I made on my lap with tissues, she said,
"Now it's my turn…"
She grinned as she took one of my hands and brought it to her own lap. Then, she made my fingertips slide down her shorts.
I froze as I felt something wet and hot. This was Aqua's…
"Don't tell me you're gonna chicken out, Kazuma."
I frowned when she gave me a smug smirk.
"I won't…! It's Aqua who should fear my technique!"
"...Why should I fear it? I'm supposed to feel good, right?"
Aqua of all people was calling me out for my illogical statements.
Trying to fight through the nervousness I felt, I tried rubbing against the wet slit underneath Aqua's shorts.
It was hard to work with something I couldn't see, but if Aqua wasn't ready to show me yet, I didn't want to insist.
I did my best, working up and down, my fingers gently rubbing over her wet entrance.
"Touch my chest, too…"
She didn't need to tell me twice. My other hand worked her tank-top up, revealing her braless breasts. I took a second to admire them, before reaching up to squeeze one.
Aqua started moaning and squirming, especially after I got brave and slid a finger past her entrance. I didn't do anything crazy, just slowly working her insides with my finger.
When I felt her tense up and squeeze around my finger, I didn't know what to do, until she started shaking. She gripped my arm as she went through her orgasm.
It felt good, knowing I made her feel good. There was the ego factor, too, from making a girl climax.
"Whew… That wasn't bad, Kazuma!"
She wiped some sweat from her brow as I took my hand away from her shorts.
I always felt a tinge of awkwardness after we finished doing something lewd, especially whenever we were trying out a new thing.
It was that uncomfortable weirdness you feel after breaching into the unknown.
Eventually that moment passed and we took out a fighting game and spent the next few hours playing.
"Damnit! This is soooo rigged!"
I won every match, of course.
Part 6
The next day at school, I made sure to socialize with my classmates again. Going back to those guys I interacted with, I gave them some more gaming tips.
"Oh, you're right, Satou! This is more efficient than that popular power leveling exploit!"
I didn't feel like I was part of their friend group yet, but they seemed to enjoy my presence.
"You gained +1 'Bravery' and 'Charisma'!"
During lunch, I went to the library to talk to Rin about the book I finally finished. She said,
"The harem king is an interesting character, isn't he? Even if he's scummy by modern standards, that was pretty much the norm for royalty at the time. It just goes to show that love can take on many forms…"
"It's good to keep an open mind, after all."
She raised a brow at that and smiled.
"Don't worry, I have an open mind, senpai."
How in the world did I get a girl like this to take interest in me?
If it weren't for the nightly sessions I was having with Aqua, I might have gone all in on the student librarian route…
The memories of Aqua's face when she came for me last night prevented me from doing anything hasty.
After school, I tried my best during practice again. I didn't know how powerful the next Demon King generals were, but I prepared myself to face any threat.
"It's good that you're working hard, but don't push yourself to the point of breaking."
Mitsurugi said, as I finished some sprints.
"...We both know a healer. We can just have her fix us even if we get injured."
Mitsurugi blinked, then laughed.
"You're one crazy guy, Satou…"
That practice, I focused on sprints, pushing my cardio to its limits and improving my footwork with agility drills.
"Your 'Stamina', 'Speed', 'Dexterity' and 'Willpower' increased by +2!"
Thanks to all the advice and training Mitsurugi gave me, it got easier for me to focus on which stat I wanted to raise.
This intense training had its drawbacks, though.
I was exhausted by the time training ended, my stamina bar down to single digits.
Since it was Tuesday, I wanted to do some part-time work at the grocery store, but my stamina was too low.
Then, I got an idea.
First, I went to the dungeon.
"Guyihhh?!"
The gremlin I encountered on the first floor let out an unpleasant noise.
I absorbed its stamina with Drain Touch.
After draining the gremlin's life force, I restored my stamina while also getting 100 yen's worth of loot and 2 exp.
I did that five more times, filling my stamina bar to full and getting 10 exp and 1,000 yen in total, from all the gremlin teeth I sold through the inventory.
It wasn't much, but my main goal was to drain energy from the gremlins. The exp and money was just an added benefit.
After I left the dungeon, I headed over to my part-time work.
An hour into my shift, an angry salaryman tried to blame me because he accidentally spilled tea on his pants, making it look like he wet himself.
I patiently endured his tirade with a smile until he got bored of yelling at me and went away.
When my shift ended, my boss handed me my pay.
"Good work. Here's a little extra for dealing with that asshole."
I received 4,000 yen, as well as a bonus +2 in 'Bravery' and 'Willpower' for putting up with that salaryman.
With my shift over, I headed home and ate dinner, before heading to the backyard to practice my magic.
I brought Aqua out with me.
"I don't get why you need me here to practice your magic… Owww?!"
I used [Drain Touch] on her to replenish my mana.
"Wait, Kazuma, that was a Lich skill, wasn't it?! Where'd you learn that?!"
I avoided her gaze.
"Not telling."
"I'm not gonna come to your room for the next week if you don't tell me."
"Her name is Wiz. She owns a magic store downtown called 'Wiz Magic Store. Here, let me give you directions."
I had no choice but to snitch on Wiz.
With Aqua leaving to confront Wiz, I resumed my magic training, aiming for the cans that functioned as my targets.
"You gained +1 'Magic Power' and 'Mana Capacity'!"
I wanted to gain more increases, but I couldn't do much just from shooting cans with beginner magic.
Seeking advice from Megumin was an option, but I knew she'd just go off on a rant about explosion magic.
I spent the next couple hours doing homework, then, when Aqua came back, she went to my room, shoving the door open.
"That disgusting Lich! How dare she operate a store even if she's just a lowly lich!"
I finished up my Math homework in time to deal with Aqua's temper tantrum.
"It's not like she's making a lot of money. She's barely making enough to make rent. Would you prefer if she was homeless?"
"Creature comforts are too much for a mere undead!"
Since Aqua was a goddess, it was natural that she'd hate undead.
I knew her enough that I felt safe giving her Wiz's address, though. Aqua was surprisingly soft when it came to people who needed protection, and Wiz was one such creature that brought out the urge to protect her.
"Not only that, but I smelled the scent of a devil in that store… And I'm pretty sure I smelled that scent on you before, Kazuma!"
This mad hound had quite a sense of smell.
Before she could start asking me questions about Vanir, I grabbed her shoulders and firmly kissed her.
A night of making out and touching each other distracted her from her holy war against Wiz and Vanir.
Part 7
The next day, when I went to school, after doing my best to pay attention in class, I went over to the guys who were interested in games again.
When I came around, they were in a bad mood.
"Oh, Satou… Sup?"
I was familiar with the empty expressions they had. That was the face of someone who lost all their gear after a party wipe.
"It's not our fault! There's this OP player killer who's going around stealing and looting other players! They're max level, so they don't gain anything from our loot! They're just doing it for fun!"
I didn't really care about their problems, since I didn't play the game.
The copy of 'Myriad Swords 2' I bought was collecting dust in my room.
But if these guys were in a bad mood all the time from losing their stuff, I couldn't farm them for stat increases during break times.
"Just leave it to me."
I said, giving them a confident smile.
"Eh? Um… Sure…"
Not convinced by my declaration, they went back to sulking.
"New Side-Quest Unlocked! Defeat the Player Killer on Myriad Swords 2! Quest Rewards: +2 Intelligence, +2 Willpower."
…
…
"You gained +1 in 'Speed', 'Dexterity' and 'Stamina'!"
Even though I pushed myself in practice, I didn't gain +2 increases in my stats.
I had encountered this before, I was close to hitting my physical limits.
Just like when I had to keep increasing the laps I had to run, or the intensity of my sprints, in order to see improvement.
Or when the exp yield for defeating floor 1 monsters decreased from 5 exp to 2.
If I wanted to gain my increases in stats again, I'd have to intensify my practice even further.
When I asked Mitsurugi for advice, he said,
"Well, the app is only supposed to reflect our personal growth. When it comes to physical training, doing the same exercise over and over will make your strength gains stagnate. You need to shock it every once in a while, to stimulate growth."
"What do you suggest?"
"Hmm… Well, the most efficient way to improve your body is to lift weights. Maybe go to a gym?"
"L-Lifting weights, huh…? Do you do that, Mitsurugi?"
"Yup! I go to the recreational center near my place."
I couldn't really imagine myself lifting weights, but Mitsurugi's advice had benefited me a lot so far.
"...Humu. I guess I'll check out the local gym some time, then."
"Uwa… I can't believe Satou is actually going to the gym."
"You're the one who suggested it."
"I know, but it doesn't really fit my image of you."
I couldn't disagree, because I thought the same thing.
After practice, I went to the dungeon again and used [Drain Touch] on some low level pipsqueaks to restore my stamina.
Once again, I gained 1,000 yen and 10 exp in addition.
Since this was an efficient way to gain exp, money and stamina after practice, I decided to add this to my daily routine.
Once I left the dungeon, I decided to check out the gym. It was a place of interest in the 'Location Finder' feature, anyway. Mitsurugi's advice gave me the incentive I needed to check it out.
When I entered the gym, I immediately felt insecure.
There were buff guys all around, and some women who looked like fitness models you'd see on social media.
I wasn't exactly coming in straight out of my NEET body form, since I was doing lots of exercise, but my physique paled in comparison to theirs.
Just when I was thinking of turning around and leaving, a female receptionist called out to me.
"Hello, sir. Can I help you?"
She was a beautiful blonde woman who was wearing a rather low-cut blouse that showed off her big chest. Her blonde hair and body made it seem like she was a foreigner, like Darkness.
"O-Oh, um… I was wondering how much I have to pay for a day pass…"
Charmed by this blonde beauty, I walked over to the reception table, even though I was planning to leave.
"I can help you with that! A day pass is 400 yen! We also include gym memberships and training to those who are interested!"
I didn't really want to pay for a membership, since I heard those can get very expensive, and I didn't want a trainer breathing down my neck as I lifted weights.
"Alright… Then I'll pay for a day pass…"
"Certainly! Thank you very much!"
She gave me a paper wristband before letting me in.
I looked at her name tag and saw her name is Luna. It didn't sound like a Japanese name, meaning she really was a foreigner. Her Japanese was fluent but she had a slight accent, too.
The accent meant that she wasn't an app-user, since the translation feature of the app gave a perfect Japanese accent to Darkness whenever she spoke.
I went to the changing room first and put on my PE uniform, since going in my regular school uniform probably wasn't the best idea.
Looking around the gym, I didn't really know what to do, so I texted Mitsurugi and asked for his advice.
Mitsurugi: Normally, you should divide the muscle groups you want to work out, but you do have Aqua-sama to heal you. You can honestly just go for a full-body workout every time and not worry about rest days.
Kazuma: I see. What kind of workouts should I focus on first?
Mitsurugi: Well, all muscles are important, but you're focusing on functional strength, so don't go crazy isolating vanity muscles like biceps and traps. Some workouts I suggest are squats, deadlifts, pull-ups, bench-press, and overhead press.
I was already warmed up from soccer practice and fighting those monsters, so I didn't do too many stretches and warmups before starting.
Mitsurugi sent me some videos of the exercises he recommended for me to do, and he also advised me to go light at first, adding more weights if it's too easy.
I started with the deadlift first, waiting for a girl to finish using the barbell.
It took all my effort not to check out her toned butt as she did the exercise. I didn't want to get kicked out of the gym for perving out, after all.
When it was my turn, I took out some of the weights she put on until it looked light enough, then started lifting like the videos showed, using alternating grips to pull the barbell up.
Mitsurugi told me to activate my glutes, abs, thighs and my lower back to lift it up. My natural instinct was to use my arms to pick it up, but apparently that wasn't the point of the exercise. I still felt some burn in my arms, though.
I added a bit more weights when I felt it was too light and repeated the exercise with breaks in between, for three sets and eight reps.
I spent the next couple hours going through the other exercises, exhausted by the end.
"You gained +2 'Strength', 'Stamina' and 'Willpower'!"
Mitsurugi told me that it was a good idea to take in protein after the workout. I went to the gym's vending machine and bought a protein shake for 300 yen, gulping down the chocolate flavored shake.
I took a shower in the gym changing room and put my school uniform back on, before limping away to the train station and heading back home.
"Geez, Kazuma, what happened to you?"
Aqua said, looking at me as I staggered home.
When she used [Heal] on me, I was back to normal.
Maybe if I could convince Aqua to workout with me, I could ask her to keep healing on me and I could, theoretically, workout without ever needing to rest.
When I asked Aqua, she immediately shook her head.
"No way! That sounds like too much effort! I'd rather watch TV all day!"
That was her answer.
