Prologue:
Link
In The Hyrule Kingdom…
Link was in the training room. He was kind of always here. It was like `Hi training room` and then a couple of hours later, `OK, gotta go, see you later training room it was getting kind of boring mainly because he was here whenever he had time to kill. I wonder why I always come here. Link thought. He then shrugged and thought, Maybe it's just another thing about me that's different. He was, after all, a misfit. He always knew that he was different, and later discovered, by accident that he had magic. Not just normal magic, unheard-of magic. The first thing he noticed was he could sense and control the elements. Like he could make plants grow faster, or make the wind move a different way, or a little faster. He could do other things, too. Some he'd tried to forget he could do. He then heard footsteps and the door open, followed by a heavy sigh. "Hello, Father." He said turning toward the door to face his father. Foster Father, Link bitterly reminded himself. He could practically hear his father's thoughts, Oh, Link, why can't you be like the boys your age? He felt like yelling back "Well I'm like like this for some reason, so suck it up and deal with it."
"Your Mother and I have thought about it and decided. You have a job now, Link." It took Link's brain quite a minute to process this, and when he did he had about a billion questions at once. "What!? I have a JOB NOW!? What's next, are you going to tell me I got a job at the CASTLE NOW?" His father's mouth opened and closed several times. "NO WAY. I refuse to believe that I GOT A JOB AT THE CASTLE." Instead of replying `Ha-ha oh my gosh you fell for it. You don't have a job.' Like he was supposed to, he said "You have a more important job, protecting the Princess.'' Link froze, calculating, then practically yelled, "WHAT, I didn't fill out a form or ANYTHING. And now I get to protect HER." He'd only seen the princess once, and it was during the late Queen's funeral. From what he'd heard, she didn't cry once, not during the funeral, not for the whole day.
"Look at it this way," Link's Father said with the most care, "You protect the Princess and all the kids who make fun of you will be jealous, and the King will be happy. Everyone wins. Besides, we don't think this is healthy." Gesturing to the entire room and then to him.
"You just gestured to all of me." Link said, suddenly very uncomfortable, "And what if the princess doesn't like me?"
"Then just make her happy. That always makes your mother more, agreeable."
"Yeah, it makes MOM happy. And why would the King choose me?"
"You bested the best soldier in the army. Do you think that's going to go unnoticed? You'd have to be crazy to think that." He let out a long sigh "Look, you're going to defend the princess and that's final." His father started toward the door, but turned around at the last second, and then said, "Oh, and, Link, try not to give her the 'silent treatment.'"
Link nodded his head and replied, "Ok, I'll try." His father then walked out the door. Link sighed and decided to go to bed. But as he walked through the halls to his room he got an aching feeling, like a bottomless chasm in his stomach… that his life now would have a different ending.
Spyro
Underneath the Claws of the Cloud Mountains…
Spyro was running. He wasn't running from anything, though. He was looking around corners watching for the guardians. He knew all too well what would happen if he was found. They were going to give him to the Nightwings. He had no idea WHY. He woke up today and then ran (figuratively and literally) into Sunny, who told him to run. He was almost to the entrance/exit bolder when he remembered, Hunter. In the craziness of the morning, he completely forgot about Hunter. He carefully went to his sleeping cave. (He and the dragonets used to sleep in a pile until Kestrel got the idea of sleeping caves. This was when Spyro got the idea Starfight had a crush on Sunny, but he always denied it.) Hunter was sleeping in his ice blue tunic and brown pants (he got them when he snuck out the sky hole and lived to tell the tale to Spyro since he was the only one who knew that he existed) when Spyro got there, it made sense, though. Hunter never woke up until an hour after dawn. He woke Hunter up by gently shaking him, until he stubbornly awoke with a grumble that sounded like "Ok, ok, geez, Spyro. I'm up," Starting up. Spyro knew he had at least another hour before he could safely escape. He might as well spend it talking. "All right I'm up" Hunter replied as he sat up. He looked at his snout and said, "Oh Spyro, why are you crying?" Spyro didn't care how many tears were running down his snout. He suddenly really wanted to end this conversation now. "Hunter," Spyro sobbed softly "I want you to run. Run, it doesn't matter where just run."
"With you, right…Right, Spyro?" Spyro shook his head,
"No… I have to run from the Nightwings. The Guardians were planning to give me to them."
"Why, exactly?"
" I-I don't know. They think I'm just Nothing." He stuttered because Spyro was now crying so hard he thought his eyes might fall out.
"They think I'm a tool to keep the others in line. But please, go and run." Hunter stayed quiet for a moment a then chuckled softly "You don't get it, huh." Spyro was a little surprised at Hunter's reply "What do you mean?"
"I'm not leaving you. You're the only one I have Spyro. Without you, I … I don't have anyone." He said quietly.
"Why stay with me though? If you come, you'll have to be on the move all the time."
"So? It's not like I have anyone to go to. Besides your one dragonet. They'll forget you in a week." Now it was Spyro's turn to be quiet. Not the dragonets. The guardians will, but the dragonets won't. He thought fiercely. That, he knew was true. He had to think for a moment and then said "Ok fine, hop on." Hunter's face lit up and climbed on Spyro's back "All right, hold on" Spyro called
"Got it!" Hunter replied. Spyro took a breath and leaped into the sky.
So I've bounced this idea around for a while, so I hope you Enjoy it! May you all have the power of Wings of Fire! Note; The Hunter machined in the story is NOT the Hunter in Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage, Or Los: Dawn of the Dragon. It is a coincidence that they have the same name. Oh, and, for damage reasons only, Dragons have been shrunk down to the size of HTTYD dragons, otherwise the Master sword would do nothing to the dragons later in the story.
