Chapter 11

Happiness slowly enveloped Yotsuba's heart as she walked alongside Fuutaro, heading towards the Otowa Waterfall. The earlier hesitations and gloom that had clouded her were now fading away, replaced by a growing sense of anticipation. Spending time with her tutor, who was also her first love from six years ago, filled her with excitement. While Yotsuba had willingly suppressed her own desire to walk with Fuutaro, prioritizing Ichika's plan to help Nino to spend time with him, she could not pass up the opportunity presented by her eldest sister. She knew she would owe Ichika a big thanks for this.

But for now, Yotsuba wanted to cherish this moment with Fuutaro, just like they did during their adventures from six years ago. A warm smile played upon her lips as nostalgic feelings washed over her, as they were about to embark on a journey reminiscent of their past.

As the two drew closer to their destination, they could not help but notice a lengthy line of people eagerly waiting to partake in the magical experience of drinking from the waterfall's stream. The waters, gracefully divided into three streams, cascaded from the roof of a small structure, where tourists patiently queued.

"Whoa... How did it get this crowded? We're looking at a good fifteen or thirty minutes of waiting here," Fuutaro mused, his gaze shifting from the waterfall to the seemingly endless queue. The sight of the crowded line left him feeling disinterested and with a narrow-eyed expression, he turned to Yotsuba and asked, "Should we consider going somewhere else? Or do you want to wait?"

"I'm perfectly fine with waiting, Uesugi-san. We should join the line before it gets even longer," Yotsuba replied, her renewed cheerfulness shining through. She was now much energetic, resembled to her usual self, in stark contrast to earlier when Ichika had revealed her desire to spend time with Fuutaro. "Considering it's a peak time right now, it's likely that other places are just as crowded. Besides, we still have lots of time until the afternoon trip ends, right?"

Fuutaro responded with a nonchalant shrug and remarked, "Well, if you say so," before falling into step behind her. He cast another glance at the extensive line of people, releasing a faint sigh.

While patiently waiting their turn, Yotsuba could not help but overhear snippets of conversation from the fellow queueing individuals.

"Did you know that this waterfall has the power to grant wishes in various aspects?"

"Yes, I've heard. It can bestow success in school or career, luck in love and romance, or even a long and healthy life."

"That's right! I plan on drinking from the stream that grants a long and healthy life. Lately, I've been feeling under the weather, and I hope this water can restore my health. I can't afford to keep taking sick leaves. My boss has been giving me a hard time about it..."

"Heh! I think it's because you keep partying at the bar until midnight, sometimes not even returning home. Personally, I'm going to drink from the stream that promises a successful love life. There's someone I'm interested in at my workplace, and I hope this will make them take notice of me."

"Well, good luck with that. But remember, you need to put in some effort yourself if you want to be successful."

Thus, it became evident that the waterfall held the power to fulfill the wishes of those who drank from its stream. This morning, Yotsuba had read information about Kiyomizu-dera and its attractions on the internet. The details intrigued her, especially since the last time she had visited this place with Fuutaro, and with her sisters (Yotsuba visited Kiyomizu-dera again due to the school trip's schedule), they had mostly explored the main temple and the nearby forest.

One of the attractions she had read about was the Otowa Waterfall, where the water originated from a nearby spring and split into three streams. According to the information, drinking from a particular stream would grant a wish based on its respective theme. It was frowned upon to drink from all three streams, as it symbolized greediness and could potentially nullify the wish. Therefore, one had to choose a single stream to drink from for the desired effect.

Yotsuba could not help but wonder if it was really true.

"Hmm… This waterfall is sure is interesting…"

"Three streams to choose from…"

"Maybe I should choose that stream…"

After waiting for around twenty minutes, it was finally time for Fuutaro and Yotsuba to take part in the magical ritual. As they approached the structure, they saw a long pole with aluminum cups attached to it, designed to reach the stream of water. The cups were neatly arranged on a counter, looked clean and shiny, sterilized under the UV light. From the rooftop of the structure, three streams of water cascaded down gracefully, beckoning anyone who wanted their wishes to come true.

Yotsuba immediately took one and headed to the left stream, which was the stream for academic and career success. While waiting in the line earlier, she pondered on which stream she should drink from since all of the stream were enticing to drink. After much weighing, she ultimately decided to choose from the stream for academic and career success.

As she about to extend the cup to the water stream, she noticed that Fuutaro was stood still, quiet, as his eyes gazing to all three streams back and forth. It looked like that he was having trouble on choosing which stream to drink from. Yotsuba then went to check on him. "Uesugi-san, what's wrong?" she said, her eyes met his own. "Are you decided yet on which stream you want to drink from? Or are you still confused?"

"Hmm... I'm still not entirely sure," Fuutaro replied, holding his chin with his fingers, still observing the streams. "Have you already made your choice, Yotsuba?"

Yotsuba nodded enthusiastically and replied, "Yes, I've decided to drink from this stream." With a determined stride, she approached the left stream, extending her cup to capture the water. "This stream is believed to bestow success in academics or career."

"I see… So, which stream is associated with love, and health?"

"The middle stream is believed to bring love and romance, while the right stream is said to grant a long and healthy life."

"Are you sure about that?"

"Absolutely! I've read lots of reviews online, and they all seem to say the same thing." Retrieving her cup, it was now brimming with water from the stream of academic and career success.

Fuutaro nodded thoughtfully, absorbing her response. "Right…" With renewed determination, he once again gazed at the three streams before him. After a brief contemplation, he reached a decision and moved towards the middle stream, cup in hand.

Yotsuba was taken by surprise at Fuutaro's decision to choose the middle stream. Her eyes widened, and she let out a tiny gasp as she observed him scoop water from the unexpected stream. She could not help but wonder why he had made that choice. Yotsuba had always known that Fuutaro had little to no interest in love or romance topics. His dismissive attitude was evident in his statement last year when he proclaimed that such topics were irrelevant and could hinder his studies. Moreover, his generally indifferent and insensitive demeanor further supported his disinterest in matters of love. Curiosity getting the better of her, Yotsuba immediately approached him to ask, "Uesugi-san, did you really choose the middle stream? That's quite unexpected, especially considering..."

"Why not?" Fuutaro replied back in a monotone voice.

"Well... You said last year that you weren't interested in matters of love. Given your personality, you're probably the last person in school who would be interested in discussing it. You sure you did not hit your head this morning?" Yotsuba remarked as she circled around Fuutaro, searching for any signs of abnormality.

"No, I'm not," Fuutaro said in slight irritation. "I'm as conscious as clear-minded person when I made this decision."

Suddenly, a realization seemed to dawn on Yotsuba, causing her to startle slightly. She had a hunch as to why Fuutaro had chosen the middle stream, and it must be that. "Could it be that you've finally become interested in someone?" she exclaimed loudly, moving closer to him. "Is it someone from our school? Can you share the details about this person with me?"

Fuutaro waved his hand dismissively, sounding unimpressed. "Hold up before you start imagining things. I've got my own reasons and priorities for picking this stream," he said. "You see, I'm already doing well enough in my studies, so I don't need to chase after more success in that area. And I'm pretty healthy too, no major health issues, so the right stream doesn't really matter to me. That's why I logically chose the middle stream, the one symbolizing love and romance. It's something I don't have much experience with."

Yotsuba wore an unimpressed pout upon hearing his explanation. Perhaps she had overthought the situation and had set her expectations too high for his true reasoning. "Ehh... I see. Just as I expected, even when it comes to matters of love and romance, you're still stiff and logical," she said, turning away from him with a tinge of disappointment in her tone. "Well, I guess I shouldn't be surprised. I would be more shocked if you had told me that you finally found the love of your life."

"Well, sorry to disappoint you." Fuutaro said, shrugging and wearing an "I told you so" expression. "But what you said isn't entirely wrong. I've developed a certain interest about love and romance recently… But it's not what you're imagining." His expression tinged with a touch of embarrassment, and he averted his gaze away from her. "Don't tell this to everyone, especially your sisters, okay?"

"Hehh… Is that so?" Yotsuba turned back to face him, her face showing a mix of curiosity and disbelief. After observing Fuutaro for a while, her eyes sparkled, and she boldly stated, "Don't worry, I won't say a word, even if doomsday were to strike tomorrow!" She punctuated her vow with a quick salute, a gesture intended to reassure Fuutaro.

"Heh, I will hold you to that statement."

"You know, Uesugi-san, I chose the academic and career stream so that I can be successful in school and graduate with outstanding grades. Just like you wished, right?"

Fuutaro's lips curled into a genuine smile as he appreciated her dedication. "Nice. I'm glad to see you're so committed. But remember, don't put all your faith in the so-called power of the water. Treat it like a silly superstition. Keep studying hard, and I'm sure you'll get the grades you want. Just don't disappoint me on the next exam, alright?"

Yotsuba's grin widened, the excitement bubbling over her from Fuutaro encouraging her. "You can count on me! Anyway, let's not keep the people behind us waiting any longer. Let's drink the water!" Raising her cup, she initiated a cheerful "Cheers!"

Responding with equal enthusiasm, Fuutaro lifted his cup and joined in the toast. "Cheers!"

And so, Fuutaro and Yotsuba drank from their respective cups, their faces radiating joy and anticipation. The reason why Yotsuba chose the academic and career stream was rooted in a six-year-old promise she had made with Fuutaro. At first, her thoughts conflicted between choosing this stream or the love and romance stream because she had always loved him since the day they met. But ultimately, she decided to choose the stream of academic and career success because the promise between them was a vow to work tirelessly in school and achieve success to ease their family's struggles. Until the day when she could fulfill the promise, she would temporarily set aside her feelings of love for him and work hard to fulfill the promise first.

"I'll never forget..."

"Our promise from six years ago..."

"I will make sure to become smarter, just as we promised..."

"Until that day have arrived, I will work hard to fulfill it…"

"As an expression of my love for you..."

For their next destination, Fuutaro and Yotsuba ventured to the Jishu Shrine, known for its Love Stones. Takeda had suggested this attraction to Fuutaro earlier that morning, and after contemplating it for a while, he became intrigued by the idea of witnessing the Love Stones and perhaps giving it a try.

As they arrived at the shrine, they noticed a small crowd of about ten people gathered around the Love Stones. Two stones with elegant kanji characters engraved on them were positioned approximately 18 meters apart. Apart from the intriguing legends and superstitions surrounding the stones, they appeared unremarkable.

Fuutaro and Yotsuba observed the scene, taking note of the participants' efforts. In the end, only one person successfully reached the other stone unaided, eyes closed, while four relied on their friends for assistance. Unfortunately, the remaining five individuals failed to complete the challenge, either losing their way or giving up before reaching the end.

Fuutaro recalled reading in the brochure that those who managed to traverse the distance with their eyes closed and without any help would supposedly find true love or experience a stroke of luck in their love life. On the other hand, those who received assistance from others could anticipate their love fortunes changing with the help of a third party. As for those who fell short, they were advised to wait patiently, as their time for love had yet to come.

Observing the bustling scene around the Love Stone, Fuutaro realized that the area was quite crowded. Navigating from one stone to the other with eyes closed would be no easy task, especially without accidentally bumping into others or losing their way. Turning to Yotsuba, he asked whether they should still attempt the challenge, given the less-than-ideal conditions.

"So, should we try our luck? It's quite crowded here, and it seems challenging to make our way from one stone to the other without bumping with anyone or getting off track," Fuutaro inquired.

Yotsuba's eyes sparkled with enthusiasm as she cheerfully responded, "I think we should give it a shot! It wouldn't be as fun without the presence of other people. Let's wait for our turn and join in the excitement!"

A smirk played on Fuutaro's lips as he regarded Yotsuba's unconventional reasoning. "Heh, you certainly have a knack for choosing the more difficult path, don't you? All right, you go first. I want to see if you can pull it off amidst all this chaos."

"Challenge accepted! Watch me as I conquer the Love Stone without any assistance!" Yotsuba declared, grinning confidently.

After enduring several minutes of anticipation, their moment arrived—the chance to test their luck and agility in reaching the other stone with closed eyes, staying true to the designated path. As agreed, Yotsuba stepped forward, mentally preparing herself for the challenge. She scanned her surroundings, stretched her arm, and then cast a smile back at Fuutaro.

"Okay, here I go! Wish me luck, Uesugi-san!"

"Just make sure you don't wander off too far and accidentally stumble into one of the souvenir shops, alright?" Fuutaro playfully warned her.

With a deep breath, Yotsuba closed her eyes and began her cautious journey toward the other stone. Fuutaro observed her progress, walking closely beside her. At first, she appeared steady, confidently maneuvering through the crowd with her outstretched hand as a guide. However, after traversing approximately seven meters, Yotsuba encountered a small stumble, almost losing her balance due to an uneven patch of ground. From that point on, everything seemed to spiral downward. She started to collide with a few people, but she managed to regain her stability and continued moving, backwards… Her eyes remained firmly shut, demonstrating her commitment to following what they agreed on and refraining from cheating—a testament to her unwavering determination.

Fuutaro could not help but chuckle softly from seeing her went the opposite direction and watching her futile attempts to find her way, her hand grasping at thin air. Yotsuba's voice filled with uncertainty reached his ears.

"U-Uesugi-san, am I doing okay?"

"Yeah, you're doing great. Just keep going…" he said in a monotone voice, but his face was all playful, amused of her struggle.

The momentary laughter quickly dissipated as Fuutaro caught sight of Yotsuba veering toward the stairs leading to the lower level. His heart skipped a beat, a surge of alarm coursing through him, propelling him into immediate action. "Oi, Yotsuba!" he called out urgently, reaching for her arm as she stood just a few meters away from the perilous descent. "Hey, watch out!"

"Ehh...?" Yotsuba's eyes immediately opened in surprise as she felt a firm grasp sensation on her arm. She then turned her head and found Fuutaro already standing by her side. "Uesugi-san... What's wrong?"

Relieved that he had managed to prevent her from venturing further and risking an accident, Fuutaro released a deep sigh of relief. "*sigh* Thank goodness..." he breathed, before redirecting her attention. "Look in front of you. You had strayed way too far from your starting point."

Following Fuutaro's gaze, Yotsuba's eyes landed on the staircase leading down to the lower level. Her breath caught in her throat, realization dawning upon her that she had come dangerously close to a potentially disastrous misstep. Exhaling deeply, she felt a profound sense of gratitude for being saved from harm. Glancing around, she took note of her unintended backward progress instead of going forward. "Whoa... I had no idea I had wandered so far from where I began," she admitted and then turned to Fuutaro with a grateful smile, "Anyway, thank you so much, Uesugi-san! If you hadn't stopped me, I can't even imagine what could have happened."

"Yeah, don't mention it," Fuutaro replied, releasing his grip on her arm. He walked back toward the starting stone, Yotsuba trailing closely behind. "You see now? I told you it would be difficult with all these people bumping into you. There's even an uneven patch of ground that nearly tripped you up," he pointed out. Continuing, he advised, "You should have waited until the crowd thinned out a bit."

"Ughh... It's no fun if you can just walk straight without any crowd, you know?" Yotsuba retorted, unimpressed by Fuutaro's perspective and pouting slightly. She felt that his reasoning for the challenge was too easy and lacked excitement. "There's a reason why people do this with a lot of others around. If you manage to navigate through the crowd successfully, your luck will be even greater. Besides, this place will never be empty because it's a highly popular tourist spot."

"*sigh* I don't even understand the logic behind it when there's an easier way to accomplish the task," Fuutaro exclaimed, his lips pursed as he shook his head in mild bewilderment. "So, should we move on to another place? Or would you like to hang around here for a while longer?"

Yotsuba shook her head rapidly, not content with his suggestion. "No! It's your turn, and I want you to try it now!"

"Huh? After witnessing your near failure and almost witnessing you tumbling down the stairs, I'm not exactly in the mood to give it a shot," he replied dismissively, waving his hand nonchalantly as he regarded Yotsuba with an unenthusiastic expression. "Also, take a look around. Somehow, the area has become even more crowded since you started."

"No, I insist that you try, Uesugi-san!" Yotsuba asserted, forcefully pushing Fuutaro toward the starting stone from behind. "I've already had my turn, and now it's your chance. After all, you were the one who wanted to visit these stones, right?"

Fuutaro could not help but notice the deep frown and pout on Yotsuba's face, a clear indication of her earnest desire for him to take on the challenge. He studied her for a few seconds, realizing her expression showed no signs of wavering. Knowing there was no escaping her insistence, Fuutaro finally relented. "Fine... If that's what you really want..."

Fuutaro rose to his feet at the starting stone, his gaze sweeping across the bustling area toward another stone he was supposed to reach. A sea of people filled the space in between, casting doubt on his ability to navigate through the chaos, especially with his eyes closed. Yotsuba stood nearby, her frown still etched deeply on her face, hands resting on her hips, clearly intent on seeing him through the challenge.

"You have to do it, Uesugi-san, and I won't take no for an answer!" Yotsuba exclaimed with unwavering determination. Her expression suddenly transformed into a mischievous grin, noticing Fuutaro's pleading gaze, as if silently begging her to reconsider. "Or are you afraid to take on the challenge and need me to hold your hand all the way to the end?"

"Yes, yes... I understand," Fuutaro replied, his voice tinged with a hint of irritation, his eyes rolling involuntarily. "You're starting to sound just like Ichika, you know that?"

Steeling his resolve, Fuutaro refocused his attention on the task ahead. He took a deep breath, the weight of the upcoming ordeal settling upon his shoulders, and with a deliberate motion, he closed his eyes. Step by step, he slowly advanced toward the distant stone, his right hand extended cautiously as a guide. Although a part of him hesitated after witnessing Yotsuba's near accident, another part felt drawn to the challenge, intrigued by the superstitions surrounding the stone. A flicker of determination ignited within him, gradually growing into a flame that fueled his steps.

"I never really wanted to do this..."

"But as long as I walk carefully and calculate my every move..."

"I should be fine…"

"And if there's even a shred of truth to the rumors surrounding this stone, then I can…"

"Alright, let's do this...!"

Walking forward, Fuutaro could not help but feel the brushes of contact as his hand grazed against the bodies of passing strangers, and occasional jostles against his shoulders. It proved to be quite an annoyance, prompting him to pause briefly, taking a moment to steady himself amidst the commotion. Inhaling deeply, he cracked his neck, bracing himself for what lay ahead, and resumed his slow, deliberate pace.

As he continued his cautious journey, Fuutaro began to experience an odd sensation. Since his brief break, he had not encountered any more collisions, and the path seemed unexpectedly smoother. Were all of those people suddenly disappeared? Or he strayed too far from the path and ventured into another place? But he could still hear the sound of the people around, so he should still be in intended path towards the other stone. Shaking his head, he set back his thought to finish this ordeal without allowing any other uncertainty intruding his mind.

Time seemed to slip away, losing its hold on him as he remained immersed in darkness. How long had it been since he embarked on this endeavor? Thirty seconds? A minute? Five minutes? The passage of time eluded him as he pressed onward, his outstretched right hand guiding him, unwilling to let his guard down merely because he had not collided with anyone else.

After what felt like an eternity, during which he became completely untethered from time and direction, Fuutaro's foot unexpectedly caught on an object, causing him to stumble.

"Uesugi-san!"

"Oh shit!" Fuutaro's mind raced, fearing that he had tripped over the same treacherous uneven ground that had almost stumbled Yotsuba earlier. The thought of succumbing to a similar fate sent a shiver down his spine. "Okay, I give up. I can't risk stumbling upon a flight of stairs or tripping over someone."

"Uesugi-san, you better open your eyes now..."

Fuutaro slowly opened his eyes and it immediately went wide as he took in the sight below him. Instead of stairs or an uneven ground like he thought earlier, it was a stone—the other love stone that he had embarked on this arduous journey to reach. His eyes blinked rapidly, as if to confirm the reality before him, verifying that this was indeed the long-awaited destination, distinct from the starting stone. His gaze shifted to the opposite side, where the familiar sight of the starting stone stood, solidifying his triumph and confirming that he had reached his destination at last.

"I did it, huh…?"

"Yeah, you did it…"

A wide grin spread across Fuutaro's face, and an outburst of joyous laughter escaped his lips. He was overcome with an overwhelming sense of elation, knowing that he had successfully completed the challenging ordeal. Waves of satisfaction and accomplishment surged through his body, causing him to continue laughing and grinning with pure delight. He turned to Yotsuba, who wore an expression of astonishment, witnessing her tutor overcome the daunting task.

"Hey, Yotsuba, I did it!" Fuutaro exclaimed, his voice filled with energy as he beamed at her. "Can you believe it?"

Yotsuba remained surprised, her mouth opened and her eyes were wide, as she gazed at the jubilant Fuutaro. "Uhh... Yeah, you did it..." Once the reality of his achievement fully registered, her surprise transformed into a mirrored expression of delight. "Wow! I can't believe that you managed to do it, Uesugi-san!"

"Yeah, I couldn't believe it myself. I thought I would stumble down the stairs or end up face-planted on the ground due to the uneven path," he said, stealing a glance at the stone beside him, still awestruck by what he had accomplished. "So, can you tell me what happened while I was making my way here?"

"Umm... halfway through, you were bumping into some people…" Yotsuba recounted, her voice filled with awe. "But then, miraculously, you started skillfully avoiding them, slipping through the crowd as if you had some kind of sixth sense!"

"Really?"

"Yes, it's true!" Yotsuba nodded, her eyes wide with amazement. "I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw it. I even came closer to check if you were cheating by peeking, but you weren't. And then, the rest is... well, the incredible outcome we see now."

Fuutaro reflected, a mix of contemplation and amusement shimmering in his eyes. "You know, I had a strange sensation that I was heading towards an alleyway or something. It felt like my hand wasn't touching anything, and no one was bumping into me anymore." He paused, lost in thought. "I wish you had recorded the whole thing so I could witness the magic or luck that accompanied my walk."

Yotsuba spontaneously clapped her hands at his statement. "Right… Why didn't I even think of that?" she exclaimed loudly. "I could show it to the others, and they would be amazed by your performance!"

"Nah, no need to do that. It's just between us, okay?" Fuutaro chuckled as he reached for his backpack, retrieving a bottle of water. "Whew… This challenge really made me all exhausted… All tense and thrill." He took a refreshing sip, relishing the cool liquid.

"See? I wasn't wrong to push you into taking this challenge," Yotsuba said, grinning from ear to ear. "It was fun, right?"

"Yeah," Fuutaro nodded, returning the water bottle into his backpack. "It was indeed fun and I'm glad you managed to persuade me to do this."

"You're welcome!" she replied, her smile beaming. Yotsuba's expression then shifted to surprise once again, as if struck by a sudden revelation. "By the way, Uesugi-san, now that you've completed the love stones challenge, I wonder if you'll encounter someone special in the future?" She drew closer to Fuutaro. "Could it be that the water stream from Otowa Waterfall has already begun to take effect?" Yotsuba exclaimed, her voice filled with excitement.

"Oi, oi, what's with that, huh?" Fuutaro said, a mischievous smirk gracing his lips. "Well, who knows? I can't really confirm that since it could be just superstition… or I'm just extremely lucky."

"Hmm… I think I might need to observe you from now on to see any change in your attitude…" Yotsuba said. "Or maybe after the summer break, you will be seeing a certain girl… Which would be shocking indeed…"

"Okay, suit yourself. But I can assure you that the chance of that happening is unlikely to happen," Fuutaro replied, playfully rolling his eyes. "Anyway, now that we're done here, shall we go to another place?"

"Okay! Lead the way, Uesugi-san!"

As they walked towards their next destination, Fuutaro stole a glance back at the love stones he had conquered. Now that he had triumphed over it, he could not help but wonder if the good fortune promised by rumors and superstitions would find its way into his love life. For now, he needed all the luck he can get to spend some alone time with Ichika on this school trip. This school trip was his chance to get closer to her and as the way to understand his feelings even more towards her. Yet, regardless of receiving the luck or not, Fuutaro resolved to rely on his own efforts and seize every opportunity available.

"Whew... Somehow, I managed to complete the love stones challenge..."

"I wonder if I'll truly receive the luck they speak of..."

"But even if I don't, I won't let it deter me...!"

"I will try to get her to walk with me during this school trip…"

"I will not let this opportunity slips…!"
