As Kaito and Uyu ventured further into the Land of Sky, their surroundings grew quieter, with the thick mist rolling in over the narrow paths. While they were both skilled fighters, the atmosphere and mystery of the place created a tension that felt different—almost unfamiliar—for Kaito, whose world had always centered around his duties and purpose.
Uyu, noticing his focus, smirked slightly and nudged his arm. "You know, if you keep looking that serious, someone might mistake you for a statue."
Kaito blinked and glanced at her, a bit surprised. He wasn't used to this kind of teasing, and a small, faint smile formed on his lips. "A statue, huh? Do I really look that dull?"
"Oh, it's not that you're dull," she replied, a playful sparkle in her eyes. "It's just... you seem like someone who hasn't had much fun."
Kaito tilted his head. "Fun, huh? I never really thought about it. Guess I've always had a task to focus on." His words were honest; he hadn't experienced much beyond what Naruto and the others had taught him.
Uyu glanced away for a moment, her expression thoughtful. "Maybe, when this mission is over, we could... find some ways for you to learn about 'fun' together." Her words hung in the air, the suggestion of time spent just between the two of them bringing a sense of warmth.
Kaito noticed the subtle shift in her tone and felt a strange, new feeling stir in his chest. It wasn't anything he'd been programmed to understand—something different and unexpected. "I think I'd like that," he responded, his voice softer.
For a while, they continued in companionable silence, only the sounds of their footsteps echoing against the rocks. But as they reached the peak of a hill and the fog began to clear, Uyu looked out over the view, her gaze intense. "This mission... it's strange, isn't it? Chasing someone like Orochimaru?"
Kaito nodded, matching her stride. "Yes. I understand he's dangerous. But... I also don't fully understand why he chooses this path."
Uyu's eyes met his. "Sometimes people become so obsessed with power they lose sight of everything else." She paused, studying Kaito's face. "That's why it's important to stay grounded. To have... people you care about."
Her hand lightly brushed against his arm, and Kaito felt his pulse quicken. "I think... maybe I'm beginning to understand that, too." His gaze softened as he looked at her, the subtle tension of unspoken emotions building.
Uyu's eyes held his for a moment longer, her expression unreadable. But there was a gentleness there that seemed to acknowledge everything they both weren't saying. Then, with a slight smile, she broke the gaze, moving forward with purpose. "Alright, let's focus on finding Orochimaru... but maybe afterward, we'll see about that 'fun' I promised."
Kaito nodded, feeling an unfamiliar warmth as he followed her, a hint of anticipation in the air.
Naruto and Jiraiya entered the dimly lit bar, the scent of alcohol and stale smoke heavy in the air. Around them, a few patrons sat at tables, most of them preoccupied with drinks or quiet conversations. But at a corner table near the back, a familiar figure slumped forward, her blond hair partially hiding her face. Tsunade Senju, the legendary Sannin, was unmistakable even in her current state.
"There she is," Jiraiya muttered, sighing as he watched her slam an empty sake bottle down on the table, clearly deep into another losing streak. Cards and dice lay scattered in front of her, and from the bartender's exasperated expression, it was clear this wasn't her first round of losses.
Naruto scowled, crossing his arms. "That's the Fifth Hokage candidate? She looks like she could barely throw a punch, let alone lead a village."
"Don't judge a book by its cover," Jiraiya murmured, nudging him toward the table. "Trust me, she's got more power than she's letting on. Just… not so much sense with money."
Naruto shrugged, then strode forward with purpose. As he approached, Tsunade looked up, her gaze bleary and unfocused. She squinted at him, and a half-lidded smile played on her lips.
"Who are you supposed to be, kid?" she slurred, her words blending slightly.
Naruto ignored her question, staring her down. "Are you Tsunade Senju?"
She chuckled, a harsh, almost mocking sound. "Depends on who's asking." She turned her eyes to Jiraiya, who was now standing beside Naruto, and raised an eyebrow. "Jiraiya, what are you doing dragging a kid into my business?"
Jiraiya met her glare with a calm, steady look. "This 'kid' is Naruto Uzumaki. We came here because you've been summoned back to the village."
Tsunade rolled her eyes and scoffed. "Hokage? Me?" She waved a hand dismissively, snatching a new drink that the bartender hesitantly placed in front of her. "Why would I want to take that stupid job? The Hokage position is cursed; everyone who takes it ends up dead."
Naruto clenched his fists, his jaw tight as he held back the urge to snap back immediately. But he could feel a surge of anger rising. He was no stranger to Tsunade's accomplishments—Jiraiya had told him about her legacy, her strength, her loyalty to Konoha. Yet here she was, treating the Hokage title like it was nothing, insulting everyone who had held it.
"Take that back!" Naruto's voice cut through the low hum of the bar, drawing a few curious glances from nearby tables.
Tsunade's eyes widened slightly, the haze of drunkenness temporarily cleared as she met Naruto's fierce gaze. "Excuse me?"
"You heard me," Naruto continued, undeterred by her scowl. "The Hokage isn't just some title you can throw away. All Hokage have died protecting the village, protecting me, and so did the Third Hokage. You don't have the right to insult them!"
Tsunade laughed coldly, her voice laced with mockery. "Oh, what do you know? You're just a brat. Being Hokage isn't some noble fantasy, it's a path to an early grave. If you're so eager to throw your life away, then be my guest!"
Naruto clenched his fists, refusing to back down. "If that's how you feel, then let's settle this with a fight."
She stared at him, a glint of amusement mixed with a sliver of respect flashing in her eyes. "A fight, huh?" Tsunade cracked her knuckles, stretching her arms lazily. "Fine, kid. But don't go crying if you get hurt."
Naruto smirked, stepping back and weaving hand signs. "I'm not as weak as I look. And besides, you should probably be more worried about yourself."
Tsunade snorted, taking another gulp of her drink before standing up and rolling her shoulders. Naruto raised his hand, summoning a small clump of cells in his palm. With a few more hand signs, he transformed the cells, shaping them into a fine, gleaming armor over his arms and chest. The Chimera-gan activated, spinning with intense focus, his gaze taking in every detail of Tsunade's stance.
Jiraiya raised an eyebrow at the transformation, keeping a close eye on the scene, a faint smirk on his lips. He'd seen Naruto's determination before, but challenging Tsunade like this took guts.
Tsunade narrowed her eyes at Naruto's transformation, intrigued. "What's that?"
Naruto smirked. "Just a little trick I've been working on."
Without another word, he charged at her, his armor gleaming. Tsunade met his advance head-on, her fist swinging with power and precision. Naruto dodged to the side, his movements swift, his Chimera-gan helping him predict her attacks. Her movements were fast, but Naruto's strategic mind was already adapting.
Tsunade was relentless, her punches powerful enough to crack the floor when they missed him. But Naruto's agility, combined with his quick, adaptive style, kept him just a step ahead, dodging and landing glancing blows wherever he could.
As they clashed, Naruto reached into his cells again, summoning extra layers of armor to absorb Tsunade's blows. She frowned, noticing the resilience of the armor, the way it seemed to regenerate after every hit. "Interesting technique, kid. But that's not gonna save you from this!"
She put all her strength into one punch, aiming directly at his chest. Naruto braced himself, reinforcing his armor just in time, but the impact still sent him skidding back, his armor cracked.
Panting, he grinned up at her, determination blazing in his eyes. "You're not bad, but I'm not backing down."
For the first time, a genuine smile crept onto Tsunade's face. "You've got guts, I'll give you that."
The bar had gone silent, patrons watching the fight with wide eyes. Jiraiya, observing from a distance, hid a satisfied smile behind his hand. This was exactly what he'd hoped would happen. Naruto's sheer determination and refusal to back down were breaking through Tsunade's walls, showing her the strength and loyalty that still thrived in Konoha's young shinobi.
As the two continued to clash, Tsunade finally raised her hand, signaling the end of the fight. "Alright, enough, kid. You've got spirit. Maybe being Hokage isn't so crazy after all." She looked at him with newfound respect, her gaze softened by a flicker of pride.
Naruto panted, wiping sweat from his brow. He met her gaze, his eyes fierce. "Then prove it. Come back to the village and be Hokage. Protect Konoha, like the others did."
Tsunade hesitated for a long moment, her eyes shifting between Naruto and Jiraiya. But, as she took in Naruto's determined expression, she finally gave a small nod. "Alright. For you, kid."
Naruto smiled wide, his spirit unbroken even after the intense match. Tsunade's agreement was more than he had hoped for, and the village's future now felt just a bit brighter.
