The bar buzzed with lively chatter, the scent of beer and vodka lingering heavily in the air. Amidst the noise and movement, the raven-haired man could distinctly smell the alcohol permeating the room. In the center, the dance floor was crowded with both strangers and familiar faces. His gaze swept the room, landing on his blond-haired best friend, who waved at him with enthusiasm. Sasuke slid his hands into his pockets and made his way toward the group that had taken over an entire corner of the bar. He descended the stairs and navigated through the dance floor, heading toward Naruto.
"Hey, Teme! Long time, no see!" Naruto greeted, patting Sasuke on the shoulder. Sasuke shrugged off the gesture.
"We saw each other last week," he replied, as Naruto grinned sheepishly. Sasuke rolled his eyes and nodded at the others who acknowledged him.
Scanning the room, Sasuke spotted Ino and her longtime boyfriend, Sai, cuddling in a corner. He was still surprised that the blonde had settled down with someone who resembled him. Ino and Sai had been together for four years now and were close to tying the knot. Sai flashed his usual awkward smile, and Sasuke gave him a nod. Nearby, Tenten and Neji were discussing their eldest child's development. Tenten nudged Neji and pointed at Sasuke, who nodded back at them. Shikamaru, standing by the window, smoked a cigarette while his girlfriend, Temari, chatted with Ino about the latest trends from her country. Temari gave Sasuke a wave, while Shikamaru, with a cigarette between his fingers, did the same. Sasuke remembered meeting Temari three years ago at Naruto and Hinata's wedding when Shikamaru had announced he was courting her. He still marveled at how Shikamaru, perpetually bored, ended up with someone as fiery as Temari. Sasuke shook his head, reflecting on their unlikely relationship. He was here tonight because they were celebrating Shikamaru's engagement after his proposal on a yacht the previous week.
Kiba handed Sasuke a shot of tequila and a slice of lime, which he downed before sucking on the lime. His eyes roamed the room again. On another table, his mentor, Kakashi, chatted with his uncle, Obito, and Obito's girlfriend, Rin, while at the bar, Itachi sat with Shisui. He could hear the loud voices of Lee and Gai somewhere in the crowd. On the dance floor, he spotted Karin grinding with Suigetsu, shaking his head at the two, who had finally resolved the tension between them after years of working together.
"So, how have you been, Sasuke?" Ino called out. Sasuke shrugged and sat down across from Naruto.
"Busy," he replied. Ino rolled her eyes and tossed a peanut at him.
"Boring!"
"But rich," Sasuke smirked, earning stifled laughter from the group.
"Yeah, yeah, being the youngest multi-billionaire is quite the achievement," Ino teased. Sasuke smirked again and nodded.
"How's your perfume business going?" he asked, more seriously. Ino's eyes lit up, and she smiled broadly.
"It's going great! We're opening our first physical store soon. Sai and Temari helped with the design."
"Good choice—Temari did an amazing job with Izumi's pastry shop," Sasuke noted, causing Temari to smile.
"Itachi and Izumi were great clients. I gave them a discount, but they left me a huge tip," Temari added with a grin.
"So, 'Traitor,' when are you heading to Suna? I heard from Shisui that you're expanding the company there," Sai asked, using the nickname he had given Sasuke three years ago, after Naruto's wedding. Sasuke rolled his eyes.
"Probably next week. Kakashi will be coming with me to assist."
"Perfect! Sai and I were thinking of tagging along—he'll be delivering his paintings, and I'm meeting a famous chef there," Naruto chimed in. Sasuke grunted, knowing the real reason they wanted to come: a free ride on his private jet. Despite their wealth, Naruto was saving for his restaurant expansion, and Sai was preparing for their upcoming wedding.
"By the way, where's Hinata?" Temari asked suddenly. Sasuke also wondered about Naruto's wife's whereabouts.
"She went to pick up a friend from the hotel," Naruto replied. Temari hummed in acknowledgment. Sasuke assumed Shino was in town, given his constant travels as an entomologist. The last time Naruto mentioned him, Shino had been in the Sahara Desert for three months. No one from their group ever wanted to visit Shino's house again—it was like a laboratory filled with live and dead insects.
"Who's watching Boruto?" Sasuke asked, thinking of Naruto's two-year-old son, who had inherited his father's stubbornness.
"He's with my parents. Hanabi will pick him up tomorrow afternoon," Naruto said with a smile. Sasuke had a soft spot for the kid.
"Anyway, someone should call Hinata—she's already two hours late," Naruto said, worried. Tenten waved her phone.
"We were chatting ten minutes ago. She said she was on her way, so she should be here any minute now," Tenten reassured him. Naruto nodded and resumed telling his work stories, while Sasuke listened, nursing his fourth beer. Ino excused herself to go to the bathroom with Temari. As Naruto boasted about Sasuke's company and exchanged ideas with Neji, who was also busy managing his family business, Sasuke chimed in occasionally. However, the conversation came to a halt when they heard a squeal at the entrance. Ino and Temari rushed to greet the newcomers.
Sasuke looked up and saw Hinata and Izumi descending the stairs, followed by a woman he hadn't seen in three years.
Sasuke's heart skipped a beat. There she was, wearing a dark, glittering, skintight dress with a high slit that accentuated her figure. Her long, pink hair fell in loose waves, still the same striking shade of pink that had always caught his attention. Her round jade-green eyes, though more rested, still sparkled like the forest grass they used to trek through together.
Suddenly, Sasuke felt his throat tighten, and his breath caught in his chest. No matter how much time had passed, Sakura Haruno still had that effect on him.
She approached their table, her pink lips and rosy cheeks only adding to her angelic presence.
"Sakura-chan!" Naruto exclaimed, rushing to hug her. The two exchanged a few words before she was pulled toward their table.
"Look who's here!" Tenten called out as she embraced Sakura, while Kakashi, having noticed the commotion, opened his arms for a hug as well.
"Oh my god! I missed you!" Tenten exclaimed, earning a giggle from Sakura. Kakashi opened his arms, and Sakura embraced him.
"Geez, you should've told me you were in town. I would've let you crash at my place," Kakashi said, making Sakura smile. Naruto snickered and playfully punched Kakashi's arm.
"Perv!" Naruto teased, making Kakashi chuckle.
"Thanks for the offer, Dad," Sakura mocked, remembering her high school days when Kakashi, their former math teacher, watched over her.
"Seriously, you could've told me. I've got a spare room," Kakashi insisted, but Sakura shook her head and patted his arm.
"I'm with someone," she replied. Sasuke's world stopped. He didn't know she was dating, and bringing that man here felt surreal.
"Really? Is it Sasori? The doctor who kept sending flowers to your office?" Temari asked, making Sakura blush. Before she could respond, Itachi and Shisui tapped her shoulder, grinning.
"Saku-chan!" Shisui exclaimed, pulling her into an unannounced hug.
"You look even hotter than the last time we met," Shisui teased. Sakura rolled her eyes and smacked his arm.
"You saw me last week," she said, answering Sasuke's unasked question. Shisui had requested a week off from work, which Sasuke approved only after Shisui's persistent nagging.
Itachi pulled Shisui away and hugged Sakura.
"So glad you're back. How's the hotel? They treating you well?" Itachi asked, and Sakura nodded, complimenting the staff. It surprised Itachi that she was staying at one of their hotels, a fact neither he nor Shisui had mentioned to Sasuke. Then, Sai called out to her, grabbing her attention. Sasuke's heart and breathing stopped again when their eyes met for the third time that night.
"Oh, Sasuke-kun." Sakura greeted him warmly. Sasuke cleared his throat and stood up to meet her, shocked when she hugged him. He returned the embrace without hesitation. She still smelled of vanilla, her warmth and softness unchanged. Her breath on his neck sent warmth through him. As she pulled away, he realized he missed everything about her.
"Hi," Sasuke managed to say, relieved it didn't sound like he was choking on his words.
"Hi. How are you?"
"Fine, and you?"
"I'm doing great. Uh, hi, Sai!" Sakura greeted Sai, then Neji, Shikamaru, and Kiba, who were bringing drinks. Sasuke stood there, frozen, listening to Sakura chat with everyone. Naruto noticed his best friend staring at his ex-girlfriend, clearly still not over her.
Sakura took a seat beside Temari, partially occupying Sasuke's spot. He cleared his throat and sat beside her, though she didn't seem to mind, continuing her conversation with everyone.
"So, how's the hospital?" Temari asked, prompting a smile from Sakura.
"It's going great! We made a few changes. Sasori-kun will be taking over soon, and Chiyo-sama is guiding him before she retires."
"Ah, and how's Gaara?" Naruto asked, chuckling at her reply.
"He's good. They finally agreed to be civil."
"Puh-lease, I know Gaara's just being civil for you," Temari added, making the girls at the table giggle.
"Told you, if you'd just said yes to Gaara's proposal, you'd be lounging in his mansion by now," Ino teased, causing Sakura to blush. Everyone laughed, except Sasuke, who had no idea what was going on.
"Oh, sorry, teme, Gaara asked Sakura to marry him," Naruto explained, but Temari cut in, laughing.
"And they weren't even dating. My brother doesn't know he needs to date before proposing," she clarified. Sasuke grunted and took a swig of his beer.
"Anyway, Sasori and my family are family friends. We kept in touch, and I was surprised he was courting you," Temari said.
"He's nice, but he's, um, a little extreme," Sakura admitted, taking the margarita Ino handed her.
"Yeah, all the guys who tried to date you are either stolid or clueless. No offense, Sasuke," Ino added, drawing laughter from the table. Sasuke grunted, learning more about Sasori and the fight between Gaara and Sasori over Sakura. If he'd been there, he would've joined in, but who was he to get involved? He was the one who broke up with her. At the time, his company was under attack, and he didn't want to drag her down as her career in the medical field was taking off.
The conversation continued for hours. Sakura had downed several drinks—tequila, vodka, margarita—and was now on the dance floor with Rin, Izumi, Karin, Ino, Temari, Tenten, and Hinata. Most of the men were still sober, except for Naruto, Kiba, Suigetsu, Lee, and Sai, who were having a loud debate that turned into a brief scuffle over foxes and dogs, only to laugh it off and resume talking.
Sasuke avoided the chaos, sitting at a separate table with Shikamaru, Neji, Obito, Shisui, Kakashi, and Itachi, discussing business over beer.
"It's been three years, Sasuke. Glad to see things are going well for you," Kakashi said, and Sasuke nodded.
"Speaking of three years, it's also been three since you and Sakura broke up. How are you holding up?" Shisui teased, prompting chuckles from the group.
"Not well, he was practically undressing her earlier," Neji remarked, causing Sasuke to roll his eyes.
"I was not."
"You were," Itachi chimed in, earning more laughs.
"I didn't teach you to act like that, Sasuke," Itachi joked, making Obito and Shisui laugh while Kakashi smiled.
"I wasn't—" Sasuke began.
"You were," Itachi repeated, cutting him off.
"I heard she might be moving back here," Obito mentioned, catching Sasuke's attention.
"Interested? She's finishing her residency in Suna under Tsunade's hospital, which Chiyo managed. Her contract's almost up, and she's likely to work at Senju General Hospital," Obito explained before taking a long drink.
"You missed a detail. Sakura was offered the director's position in Suna but turned it down, so Sasori took it," Shisui added. Sasuke looked at Shisui, confused. How did he know all of this? Was everyone still in touch with her?
"Is that why she's here?" Kakashi asked, but Obito shrugged.
"No, she's here for Ino's engagement party and the World Health Summit. She'll be introduced as Tsunade's successor," Obito finished. Pride swelled in Sasuke's chest. He always knew Sakura's passion for saving lives, and now, she was about to become a renowned doctor.
"She's lucky to be invited. The World Health Summit will make her a household name," Kakashi remarked, voicing what everyone was thinking. Sasuke silently agreed, glancing at Sakura, who was now dancing sensually on the dance floor, ignoring the stares from the men around her. Ino and Karin were flanking her, keeping unwanted attention at bay.
Sakura caught Sasuke's gaze from the dance floor. She smiled but decided to avoid the awkward tension, staying where she was. Sasuke cleared his throat and turned back to the conversation about Ino and Sai's upcoming wedding, happening in three months.
It took only five hours for everyone to get drunk and pass out. Sasuke sighed as he watched most of his friends out cold. He dragged Naruto's body with Kakashi to the blond's car, where Hinata was waiting.
"Are you sure you can carry him?" Sasuke asked Kakashi as they pushed Naruto into the back of the car.
"Yeah, I can manage. Go help Obito; I'm sure Rin needs some assistance too." Sasuke nodded and watched Kakashi get into the car. Hinata gave him a wave before driving off. Sasuke looked around and found Obito slumped on the sidewalk with Rin beside him, holding a bottle of water.
"Aunt Rin, do you need help with him?" Rin looked up at him and shook her head.
"It's fine. Itachi's coming with Shisui. They just had to drop Izumi off so she could rest." Sasuke nodded and waited for his brother and cousin to arrive. A black SUV pulled up in front of them, and Sasuke watched as Shisui, despite having had the most shots that night, still seemed sober.
"Hey, little cousin, why don't you check on everyone inside the bar? I told the manager to leave them be, and we'll cover the extra day until tomorrow. They can leave when they're sober enough." Sasuke nodded and helped Obito into the back of the SUV, where Rin sat beside him, wrapping her arms around his head.
"Will you be okay?" Sasuke asked.
Rin nodded, and he waved as his brother sped off into the empty street. Sasuke sighed and went back inside the bar. He found Kiba, Lee, Choji, and a few others sprawled across the bar and loveseats—about ten people passed out in total. He approached the bartender, who was cleaning the counter. Noticing the time, he was surprised to see it was already 3 a.m.
"Can you do me a favor and make sure they're in more comfortable positions? Then come back around 7 a.m. to wake them up?" The bartender sighed and nodded. Sasuke pulled out his wallet and handed him some cash.
"Is this enough?" The bartender looked shocked but nodded. Sasuke left the money on the counter and was about to leave when he saw Karin and Sakura dragging a very drunk Suigetsu.
"Sui, you're making yourself heavier on purpose!" Sakura scolded as they struggled to get him up the stairs to the entrance. Sasuke sighed and walked over to help, lifting Suigetsu's arm off Sakura's shoulder and taking over with ease. Sakura looked up in surprise as Sasuke effortlessly dragged Suigetsu to the entrance.
"Karin, who's driving Suigetsu's car?" Sasuke asked as Karin opened the door.
"Oh, I already called Jugo. He's coming to pick us up." Sasuke nodded, standing by the entrance with Suigetsu leaning on him. He felt Suigetsu about to vomit and pulled him upright.
"If you puke on me, I'll suspend you from work for a week," Sasuke snapped. Suigetsu immediately straightened, determined to avoid vomiting. Sasuke smirked as he saw Jugo pull up in Suigetsu's convertible. He dragged Suigetsu to the back seat, but Karin and Sakura hesitated when they saw the vomit inside.
"Where am I supposed to sit?" Sakura asked, looking down at the mess.
"Uh, Sakura, maybe we can come back for you?" Karin suggested as she closed the door.
"No, it's fine. I'll just take a taxi," Sakura replied.
"I'll take her," Sasuke interjected. "Just get this idiot home. He smells like fish guts." Karin nodded, got into the car, and Jugo drove off, leaving Sasuke and Sakura alone on the sidewalk.
"Come on, the car's over here," Sasuke said. Sakura nodded, avoiding his gaze. She felt a warm jacket being draped over her shoulders and looked up to see Sasuke adjusting his shirt. She could smell the expensive cologne he wore. Watching him, she realized he hadn't changed—still the same caring Sasuke who made sure everyone was safe and comfortable, even when drunk. He was still the Sasuke she had fallen in love with. She sighed, pulling the jacket tighter around her to savor its warmth and scent.
"Let's go; it's getting chilly," Sasuke said. Sakura jogged after him, following him to the underground parking lot. She spotted his favorite black Audi R8 Star—Regalia, as he called it—still looking brand new.
"Can't believe you still have this," Sakura said with a smile. "I thought you'd have bought a new car by now with all the money you have."
"It's my first car, bought with my own hard work. Why would I sell it?"
"Well, you have more money now."
"I can buy more cars without selling this one," Sasuke replied smugly. Sakura sighed, smiling, as he opened the door for her. She turned red, stepping into the familiar interior. When Sasuke got in and started the engine, she couldn't help but glance at him.
"Where's your hotel again?" Sasuke asked as they drove out of the parking lot.
"Blood Moon Hotel," Sakura answered in a soft voice.
"Are you staying in the penthouse?"
"No."
"Didn't Itachi book your room?"
"Yeah, they offered the penthouse, but I said it was too expensive. I chose the joint business suite instead." Sasuke raised an eyebrow but shook his head, doubting Itachi would let Sakura pay for the room.
"Ah," Sasuke replied, typing on the car's screen. After a few rings, someone answered.
"Hi! This is Blood Moon Hotel. How can I assist you?"
"Please upgrade Miss Sakura Haruno's room to the penthouse," Sasuke said calmly. Sakura started to protest, but Sasuke gave her a pointed look.
"Of course! Please provide your name and card number to process the upgrade." Sasuke sighed.
"Sasuke Uchiha, and if you need my card—"
"Oh my god, I didn't recognize your voice, Mr. Uchiha! I'll have Miss Haruno moved to the penthouse immediately." Sakura almost laughed at Sasuke's reaction, but he composed himself.
"Just make sure at least three people help her move her things."
"Will do, sir! Anything else?"
Sasuke glanced at Sakura, who was grinning at him. "Send freshly brewed tea to her room for two people. I'll be there in five minutes." Sakura blushed.
"Yes, sir, right away!" Sasuke rolled his eyes at the change in tone from the receptionist and hung up.
"Hope you don't mind me staying for a while," Sasuke said.
"It's fine," Sakura replied. "I have some documents to sign before bed. Maybe you can keep me company." She turned red again, realizing how that sounded.
Sasuke raised an eyebrow. "I kept you up all night three years ago, Sakura."
Sakura blushed even more, making Sasuke chuckle. "We can catch up," he added. "Tell me how you've been."
Sakura smiled. "I can't believe we're joking now. I thought it would be awkward between us."
"Hopefully, it won't be," Sasuke said as he parked in front of the hotel. He got out and walked around to open Sakura's door. She thanked him and followed him inside, where they found hotel employees lined up at the entrance.
"Mr. Uchiha, Miss Haruno's penthouse is ready. She can move in now," said a blonde woman, who Sakura guessed was the concierge. She smiled sweetly at Sasuke but gave Sakura a disdainful glance.
"Just give us the key," Sasuke said. The woman handed him the keycard with a forced smile.
"Of course." Sasuke pocketed the key and handed his car keys to the valet.
"Not a single scratch," he warned. The valet nodded nervously, and Sasuke led Sakura inside.
"Would it be okay if I took a few documents before heading up to the penthouse?" Sakura asked as she pressed the floor number.
"Ah, maybe you can prepare your things and I'll have someone pick them up and move them by morning." Sakura nodded and smiled at him. The ride up was quiet as Sakura was busy typing on her phone. Sasuke stole a few glances at her and kept silent. It didn't take long; the elevator doors opened, and both headed towards Sakura's room.
Sakura stopped in her tracks and turned to look at Sasuke. "My room is a bit messy. Is it fine for you to wait outside while I grab my stuff?" Sasuke nodded at her and leaned against the wall. Sakura grinned and entered the room, heading straight to her bedroom but not before checking the other room where Sasori was staying. She tiptoed to the table where her documents were placed, stacked them, and grabbed a clean sheet of paper to write on. She left the note on the dining table, grabbed her documents, and exited the room.
"Shall we go up?" Sasuke nodded and took the documents from Sakura's arms as they made their way back to the elevator. This time, Sakura began talking, asking Sasuke about his company. It didn't take long until they arrived at the penthouse.
"I didn't know what happened back then. All I heard from Naruto was that you were under a lot of stress, that's it," Sakura said, feeling guilty after hearing that Sasuke's company was attacked and on the verge of bankruptcy.
"Ah, Kakashi helped, and we were able to trace the shareholders who did it. Itachi was smart enough to bring out legal contracts that backfired on them. We gave them the choice: give up their shares or face a lawsuit for hundreds of millions," Sasuke said as he placed down his tea and leaned back on the sofa. Sakura sighed, placed down her pen, and stood up. She walked over to Sasuke and embraced him.
"I'm really sorry. If I had known what you were going through back then, I would've kept my emotions in check and wouldn't have caused that huge fight between us. Maybe I could have helped," Sakura said as she pulled away from the embrace.
"It's fine, Sakura—" Sasuke began, but he noticed her eyes filling with tears.
"I was so selfish. I lashed out at you just because of the stress at the hospital," Sakura spoke between sobs. Sasuke sighed, pulled her beside him, and wiped her tears, stopping her from talking.
"I was an asshole too, for breaking things off instead of telling you. We handled it, and things got better, so don't beat yourself up," Sasuke said. Sakura nodded and embraced him again. She missed this feeling as Sasuke quietly comforted her, his hand gently running through her hair.
"This is so inappropriate, but your comfort helped me. I've felt guilty ever since," Sakura said, pulling away with a smile. She stood up to return to her seat, but Sasuke stopped her.
"Either way, we were adults back then, making decisions," Sasuke said. Sakura nodded and took his hand. Sasuke felt his heart clench. He had missed this for so long, and now that she was here, he couldn't seem to make a move.
"So, tell me, how's the company? I heard you hired your college friends, Karin and Suigetsu?" Sakura asked with a smirk. Sasuke nodded.
"The two have some tension, but having Karin work with Suigetsu has made things easier for me," Sasuke said, leaning back slightly. Sakura untangled her hand from his and reached for the documents.
"Karin used to hate my guts. Surprisingly, we got along very well when she and Temari went to Suna a few months back," Sakura said with a giggle as she continued signing the documents.
"How is Suna?" Sasuke asked. He watched as Sakura paused for a moment before a smile spread across her face.
"Almost perfect. Work is hectic, but I'm learning every day. I have a wonderful roommate who I spend most of my time with. Then there's Matsuri, who is a nurse and works almost the same shift as me at the hospital. Having one friend in such a place, who I can gossip with and vent to, helps a lot," Sakura said. Sasuke noticed the way her face lit up when she talked about her roommate, and that Matsuri was clearly important to her. From what he knew, Sakura didn't have any relatives in Suna. So it must be someone special. He stayed quiet, not reacting, until Sakura tilted her head at him.
"And you? How's your family?" Sakura asked. Sasuke glanced at her before sipping his tea.
"Mother's still the same, Father just retired, and Itachi and Shisui are taking over the family company," Sasuke said. Sakura smiled and nodded at him.
"That's good to know. No one special?" Sakura asked, and Sasuke nearly choked on his tea.
"I saw on the news that you were dating some model," she said, and Sasuke just shrugged, not giving her a clear answer. Sakura felt her heart clench.
"It was just work. We hired her for a shoot with our products, and she had the wrong idea when I took her out with the team for dinner. That's why she kissed me when we left the restaurant," Sasuke explained, feeling slightly embarrassed for giving such a lengthy explanation, but he couldn't ignore the look on Sakura's face.
"Oh, well, you two looked good together," Sakura said with a soft chuckle. Sasuke snorted.
"She was nice, but it's hard to talk to someone whose intellectual capacity is below average," Sasuke said, causing Sakura to playfully smack his arm.
"Sasuke-kun! You don't have to be mean!" she teased.
Sasuke just smirked and rolled his eyes. "So, do you have a standard for women? Is that why you're gossiping to me about her intellectual capacity?" Sakura asked between giggles.
"You set the standard," Sasuke replied, lifting his cup to his lips, making Sakura blush.
"Mmhmm, I'm even too smart for your ass," Sakura teased, and Sasuke rolled his eyes again.
"Anyway, I have to go. I have an early meeting tomorrow," Sasuke said, placing the cup down on the coaster. Sakura put down her pen and smiled at him.
"I need to hit the bed as well. Thanks for keeping me company, Sasuke-kun," she said. Sasuke stood up, grabbed his jacket, and headed for the door. Sakura followed him and leaned against the doorframe as Sasuke stood at the doorway, facing her.
"I—uh... are you free tomorrow?" Sasuke asked, hands in his pockets.
"I'll be having dinner with the girls. I'm sorry," Sakura replied. Sasuke nodded slightly, feeling a pang of disappointment, until Sakura grabbed his arm.
"But my schedule is clear the day after tomorrow. Maybe you can pick me up here," Sakura said with a smile. Sasuke nodded. She watched him turn and enter the elevator. When the doors closed, Sakura locked her door and leaned against it.
She couldn't believe she had spent time with Sasuke again. She expected things to be awkward, but he was still the same. They had bantered a bit like they used to, and he had teased her like before. She missed these things with him. With a heavy sigh, she headed to her bedroom to get her well-deserved sleep.
