Chapter 5: Happy Indoctrination
June 8, 2525, 0900 hours
Location: Epsilon Eridani system, Reach, FLEETCOM Military complex
Third Person POV
For the next two days Tyler spend it by joining the other Spartans in their training exercise which to him was not too hard as he had done similar training back at the academy back home. On June 6 however things got out of hand because of the Spartans new found strength because of augmentations.
One of the Spartans Randall accidently ripped out one of the DIs arm when he tried to grab him. He was accidently tasered by two other trainers. Two Spartans Cassandra and Sheila jumped on top of the two to get them to stop. Both trainers suffered blows to the head before the Spartans were hit by tranquilizer darts. Tyler immediately rushed to their sides followed by Kurt and Jorge who tried to CPR the two DIs that got hit on the head while Tyler went for the one that had his arm ripped off.
Tyler managed to stop the bleeding by wrapping around a cloth tightly around where the arm was once located. Kurt on the other hand accidently caved in the ribcage of the one he was trying to CPR, there was blood all over the grass. As medical personals and Chief Mendez arrived the three Spartans were dragged away from the scene.
That day Tyler had vowed that yes he would in fact become a medic so that something like this never happens again and so that he can actually save lives properly.
The next day the Spartans were all confined to their barracks because of the incident that occurred the previous day. Chief Mendez on the other hand had spent the day figuring out how exactly he was to take action on the Spartans, it was clear that it wasn't their fault that they could not control their new strengths, and three of them even tried to save the DIs, from which only one survived, as Tyler succeeded.
In the end he decided to let it go by for this time but made sure to confine them to the barracks for the whole day only allowing them to come out for Lunch and Dinner that also escorted by guards.
The next day however in the morning Mendez and the other DIs arrived in the morning told the Spartans that some tests will be conducted to determine their new abilities and so the Spartans were all shifted around into different teams as some had lost their members due to the augmentations.
Tyler and Linda got into Blue team, of which Tyler was a temporary member of as Chief Mendez said. They all moved out to the medical complex and were ushered to different rooms, then taken into the lab complexes.
First up was a written exam of various academic topics, mostly math's and history. Tyler performed extremely well in history as it was arguably his favorite subject back at High school, math's however he was surprised at how he performed so well, he did know some basic calculus and formula like the Pythagoras theorem and so on but math's was never his strong subject alongside chemistry so being able to perform the complex equations was definitely a surprise.
Afterwards they were taken to a darkened room one by one where his eyes adjusted in seconds, everything had a slight yellow glow to it but he was able to make do, soon Tyler was instructed to go through a small obstacle course which he navigated flawlessly due to his flexibility and gymnastics skills that he possessed.
Next his reaction speeds in a variety of ways from simply listening to sounds and identify the direction it came from. To having a dummy gun pointed to the back his head by someone which he responded by quickly spinning around grabbing it and throwing it away and throwing a punch to the face which stopped inches from the DIs face.
Eventually he met up with Blue team as they underwent speed evaluations. It was a simple track in one of the sub basements of the lab complex. John was finishing his run; he moved like a formula one on the track and completed the 5 laps in 4:32 minutes.
Next was Kelly and Tyler jaw nearly dropped at how fast she could really run, in the books it was said she was the fastest of the Spartans and could run at average 62 km/hr to 65 km/hr with ease, but seeing it in person was a whole different story.
Even Kelly herself could hardly belief how fast she could run now when eventually completed the 5 laps in 2:07 minutes. Next up was Tyler. As he positioned himself on the starting line, the instructor gave him the go sign and Tyler took off like jet, and made a lap in about 37 seconds.
Sam who was watching alongside John, Kelly and Linda had his jaw dropped. "Damn, he's just as fast as Kelly"
John who also had his eyes widened nodded in agreement while Linda looked surprised as well. Kelly on the other hand had a grin on her face.
Meanwhile time had seemed to slow down again for Tyler as he moved too fast. Soon he completed the 5 laps in 2:06 minutes. As he stopped back at the starting track the Di approached him.
"You're just as fast as Spartan-087 if not slightly more" he said and soon left.
'What?' Tyler thought wondering how he was so fast. "I guess I am speed now" Tyler said with a small chuckle.
Suddenly Sam alongside John, Kelly and Linda approached him. Sam then gave him a celebratory slap on the back and wrapped his left arm around his neck like buddies.
"You better be careful now Kelly" Sam said, "not only Tyler match you in a sparring match but also in speed. So don't count on winning the next capture the flag with our new ace here"
"We'll see about that" Kelly said. "And of course he'll be in my team"
"No fair" Linda said
"Should I pull my rank out?" Tyler asked joining the fun.
"Probably yes" John answered
"Excuse me, Tyler" said a smooth female voice from the small speaker on the wall "Could you come here for a moment"
Tyler complied and went over to the wall leaving the rest of blue team, but as he stood there for a while no one came. Suddenly a holoprojector came to life and a figure of a woman appeared, she looked like a Greek goddess and had some blue outlines.
"My name is Deja" she said, "I doubt the Doctor mentioned me"
"Damn" Tyler said, mesmerized by the technology and seeing an AI in person for the first time. "Sorry, you're just the first AI I've ever seen"
Her avatar smiled a bit. "I'll be teaching you a few things during your time here. Our first lesson is in an hour, try not to be late"
"Got it" Tyler said
June 9, 2525, 1300 hours
Location: Epsilon Eridani system, Reach, FLEETCOM Military complex
Third Person POV
"You currently have 10 missiles locked onto you" Deja warned, "It is advised that you pitch up the nose"
"Don't worry, we'll be fine" Tyler said calmly as he kept the pelican stable while initiating evasive maneuvers to dodge the SAM's fired at his drop ship from the tree lines. Alarms blared as the missiles closed to within 300 meters.
"250 meters until contact" Deja warned, "200 meters"
"No need to tell me Deja I already know" Tyler said keeping calm in this situation, "Deploying Flares" as he said that he activated the heat seeking decoy to draw the missiles away. Six missiles struck the decoy and exploded about 180 meters away from the pelican while 4 more still continued on their target.
"4 more missiles still on course for collision with the pelican" Deja said. "Counter measures are unavailable"
"Guess we will have to make one then" Tyler said, 'Alright Tyler, years of playing War thunder experience should allow you to pull off this stunt with the pelican as well' Tyler thought
"100 meters until contact" Deja warned, "50 meters"
"Alright let's do this!" Tyler said and soon he pulled the pelican up and continued pulling it up, as he did that 2 of the missiles went off course and exploded shortly after. As Tyler continued his maneuver he had effectively done a 360 with the pelican and soon the other two missiles had also gone off course shortly after.
As Tyler was now free of any missile he soon got the pelican to the landing pad and the cockpit display window shut off and the simulator ended with Tyler having a score of 88%, as Tyler undid his safety he let off some breath. The door to the cockpit open and Chief Mendez stepped in.
"I must say 071, you're flying skills are remarkable" He said. "Although the passengers in the back would say otherwise"
"A small price to pay for survival if you ask me, sir" Tyler said
"Your vehicular training has come to an end" Deja said, "Excellent performance in all simulations and exercise"
Tyler nodded and got up from the seat, "You are dismissed for today 071" Mendez said and soon left the room followed by Tyler. He had many lessons with Deja like battle tactics, some basic hacking training and also some ideas on how to lead a squad or a team which he was already familiar with as it was taught to him back at the academy.
Due to the fact that trainings were mostly canceled for the Spartans and were confined to the barracks and only left for calisthenics he had the opportunity to have lessons with Deja very day and he surprising enjoyed it unfortunately it had come to an end with his vehicular trainings.
As he continued to walk down the stairs of the building he eventually exited the Reach naval academy and made his way back to the barracks, as he continued walking he still couldn't help but admire the place that he had only seen in the animated series and comics.
As he neared the barracks he was suddenly grabbed by someone and soon dragged away, the perpetrators being Blue team, Sam being the one dragging him away followed by Kelly.
"Hang on where am I being kidnapped to now?" Tyler asked confused.
"We're on a camping trip" John said "Chief's orders, It'll be fun"
'So that why he dismissed me' Tyler thought, "Wonderful" Tyler said sarcastically
"I know right we get the time to bond together now" Kelly said
'Why do I feel a sense of Déjà vu suddenly' Tyler thought.
June 10, 2525, 1800 hours
Location: Epsilon Eridani system, Reach, Near FLEETCOM Military complex
The camping trip the Tyler was dragged to turned out to be a pelican dropping in the middle of the wood, that was two days ago. He was currently sitting away from the fire at their make shift camp writing his diary that is when Kelly came over and sat next to him.
"What are you writing?" Kelly asked
"Just my thoughts on today" Tyler answered as he completed writing his diary for today and put it inside the small wrist bag he always had.
"John's thinking about moving out from here in a bit" She said as she ran a hand across her somewhat bald head.
"Don't worry It'll grow back in time" Tyler said as he ran through his as well which had returned to its original length
"You think so, I mean it's been months now" Kelly said
"Well my mother use to say that women's hair take longer to grow" Tyler said he then looked up at the night sky and the unfamiliar star patterns, "Which one is Earth's" he asked
"Actually Earth's star is only visible from the southern hemisphere only" Kelly said, "Did you live there?"
"No, I am from Luna actually" Tyler lied as he said his cover up origins. "You could see earth in both day and night, especially at night time when you saw the dark side of the earth and all the lights lighting up"
"It must have been beautiful" Kelly said. "You're lucky, I can't even remember which planet I came from"
"Must be hard" He said
"Not really, over time John, Sam and the other became my new family" she said.
After awhile John came and told them that they were moving out, Tyler and Kelly got up and helped Sam put out the campfire. They proceeded through forest with John taking the lead, Tyler had told them to call him by his name and not Sir and give command to John as he was not really interested in leading a team that already had a leader and well his inner fanboy simply could not allow himself to replace John as the leader of blue team.
They walked until they came across a small pond or lake which was extremely familiar to the one Tyler had seen in his dream. As the sun was beginning to rise and the dark sky replaced by a purple-blue twilight the first ray of sunlight began reflecting off the calm waters, they all refilled their canteens while John decided to strip a nearby berry bush.
They continued on forwards, they weren't given a map by Chief Mendez before he kicked them off the pelican so they all assumed that he would be back or that someone would be back to pick them up. As they were walking they suddenly noticed a few people up ahead in front of them, they recognized the helmets and body suits, ODSTs
'Bloody hell not these cunt's again' Tyler thought. Sam, Kelly and John had already started running back towards the lack wile Tyler followed them, as he started catching up to them, bullets started flying over their heads and started hitting the water in front of them.
"Run!" Sam shouted as they made a beeline for the trees. Once clear of the ODSTs they stopped by a large tree with a hollow at its base, they decided to take refuge inside it.
"What the hell is going on here?" Sam asked
"I think they're still pissed about how I beat them up back at the Atlas" Tyler said. "I saw three of them before running"
"Ok, they didn't look like they were equipped for a hike from the small glance I saw, which means they had to have used a pelican or something else to get here" John said, "We should try finding it"
"Agreed, lead the way" Tyler said.
As they began moving slowly through the thick forest making sure to not make too much sound, they came across a clearing and saw a Falcon parked there guarded by two more ODSTs.
"Seems we got two more" Tyler said, "What's the plan?"
"Sam you play bait, Kelly you're the rabbit" John said.
'Oh shit they're using the same plan they used during the wilderness exercise' Tyler thought, "Hang on.. they are armed with M7S" Tyler said, "I say we sneak up on them instead"
John thinks for a moment as he observes the ODSTs weapons, "Alright, so how are we doing this" John asked
"Simple, like this" Tyler said and he started slowing walking towards one of the ODSTs who had their backs turned while crouching. As Tyler came close to the ODST he karate chopped the back of his neck knocking him unconscious without any noise, while the other ODST simply continued staring at the opposite direction completely unaware.
As Tyler went for the second one he decided to kick him instead of Karate chopping him, giving the other ODST a roundhouse kick to the neck knocking him out as well. Tyler then showed a thumb up sign signaling that all is clear, soon John, Sam and Kelly Came out of the bushes.
"Nice one Tyler" Kelly said as she pads his back.
"So what now" Tyler asks John
"How do we open this exactly?" Sam said trying to open the glass canopy to the cockpit.
"Out of the way" Tyler said as he approached the glass with his spare PT shirt wrapped around his right arm, he then punched the glass breaking it. "So, who's flying?"
"Well, no one but we can do this" Sam said as he got inside and fumbled around with the controls, a message appeared on of the screens saying emergency beacon activated. "That should alert anyone, even the ODSTs"
"Let's hope rescue team gets here first then" Tyler said, as Sam hopped out of the Falcon's cockpit and joined the others at the tree line.
They decided to head back to the hollowed out tree and wait it out there, as they were about halfway there Tyler noticed a stun grenade thrown above their head and quickly push Kelly who was in front of him forwards into the bush making her, John and Sam stumble forwards.
As Tyler looked around the forest he saw three figures approaching them from the right side, Tyler looked at Kelly and John, "GO!" he screamed and decided to head towards the left which led towards the lake, as the ODSTs continued to peruse him, Kelly tried to follow him but was pulled back down by Sam who together with John hid behind a bush as the three ODSTs passed by them chasing after Tyler.
As Tyler exited the forest he stopped right before the lake and turned back to see 2 ODSTs emerge from the forest, both of them removed their combat knife and dived for Tyler.
Tyler quickly reacted and immediately knocked one of them back with a back kick, while the other one tried slashing him multiple times which Tyler dodged with ease, he grabbed the second ODSTs head while he lowered his guard and brought it down hitting his head with his knee breaking the ODSTs visor while knocking him unconscious, while the other ODSTs simply cursed and lunged for Tyler again but this time Tyler grabbed him by the arm and with ease threw him into the lake.
As Tyler decided to stop and take a breath he was suddenly grabbed by the neck from behind by the third ODST who had remained hidden and soon started drowning him by submerging his head inside the water.
'So…this is what the dream was about' Tyler thought as he started losing consciousness and started suffocating, as the ODST continued to drown Tyler in the lake he was suddenly hit at the head from the back knocking him out while releasing Tyler who had gone Unconscious. It revealed to be Kelly who then pulled the unconscious Tyler out of the lake and laid him next to a tree.
"Tyler!" Kelly said as she tried walking up by slapping his face but to no avail, "Come on come on down die on me now" Kelly tried to do CPR on him. As she was doing that John and Sam arrived a few marines.
"Kelly!" Sam shouted as he went to her side next to the unconscious Tyler, "What happened"
"I don't know, by the time I got here one of the ODSTs was drowning him by the lake" She answered.
"It's best we let the marines handle this" John said as the marines started picking up the unconscious ODSTs and pulled the one that that Tyler threw into the river out.
June 15, 2525, 1100 hours
Location: Epsilon Eridani system, Reach, FLEETCOM Military complex
As Tyler started regaining his vision he soon found himself in a hospital bed wearing the same hospital groom he wore during the augmentation.
"The hell am I at now" Tyler said under his breath as he tried to get up only to be stopped by a hand that was placed on his shoulder, as he looked at who the and belonged to he saw Kelly .
"Oh Kelly" Tyler said in relief, "How long was I out for?"
"Five days" Sam who was standing behind her answered for her, "Sure took your sweet time recovering"
Tyler chuckled at that, "Well, try getting drowned and then you will know how it feels" he said while grinning
"Alright alright, enough talk now" John who was standing next to the door alongside who kept an eye out to make sure no one was coming by. "Let's give Tyler sometime to rest, he just woke up after all"
"Wait, before we all leave can we take a picture" Kelly said
"Wait why?" Tyler asked confused.
"So that we can remember the day when you got hospitalized" She said with a grin
"Alright let's take pose" Sam said as he stood on the right side of Tyler bed doing a cheese while Kelly stood on his left also doing a cheese sign, John just stood by the door while Linda who had the camera took the picture, Tyler although embarrassed smiled as well.
"If you're done let's go" John said, "It seems someone is approaching" as John said that Linda, John and Sam left the room. Leaving Kelly as the last one to leave, before she left she turned to Tyler.
"Welcome to blue team, Spartan" Kelly said with a smile. "We'll make a great team" with that she left the room as well.
Tyler sighs and smiles, and stares at the ceiling, soon the door open's once again and this time Doctor Halsey is the one stepping in, "I see that you are awake" She said.
"Oh Doctor, when did you return?" Tyler asked as he got up and sat up straight on the bed.
"I heard what happened" She said, "I must say you always manage to surprise me, even though I shouldn't be at this point"
"What can I say Doctor, I am one of a kind" Tyler said jokingly.
Halsey gave him a small smile, "I have given them the report on you" she said, "they believe the cover story and have approved your conscription into the program"
Tyler sighs in relief, "Well that is good news" he said, "let me guess, I still have to be careful around them?"
"Correct" she said, "If ONI gets any suspicious of you they will dig deeper, and if unlucky may find out that there is something wrong with your cover story"
"I'll keep that in mind" Tyler said
"You should" Halsey said pausing for a moment as she tried to remember something, "I wanted to ask, what do you think about Extra vehicular activity?"
Tyler looked at her confused, "That's…a strange question" Tyler said, "But if you ask me…it's quite fascinating, only when you are winning that is…it's even more fun when you board the enemy ship and it becomes a gun fight, turning ship battles into land battles"
Halsey nodded; "well you will have to be in the infirmary for a few more days" she said and began leaving for the exit.
"Wait, Doctor" Tyler said and Halsey looked back to him, "I have been wanting to ask….can you…can you perhaps teach me medical?"
Halsey gives Tyler a full smile for awhile but goes back to her expressionless face. "After you recover that is" she said and left the room leaving Tyler alone.
"Alright Tyler" Tyler said under his breath. "It's time to practice Medicine"
