"No." It was emphatic, final, the musicians major challenge to this project that he'd only agreed to because his music partner wasn't able to fulfill her promised roll.
"Now, mister Harris, if it's the charity…" The odd little man who'd come to get his information started, but never got to finish.
"It's not that." Dre insisted. "I have nothing but love for the LGBTQIA community. Plus, I know my friend loved the group, from before she even realized she was a part of them. Saw her at the parades, when she could, always an ally, never a member. THEN she went and got herself the one woman she could be gay for, and I'm rambling…" He chuckled. "No, it's nothing like that. It's just…"
"It's the charity, isn't it?" The fussy man fidgeted. "The IOA isn't the most prestigious organization, but we're doing good work here. Helping kids, those who've run away because of their orientation, find their way back. And, and because it's so hard to find out who, exactly, may have run away for those reasons, we're just building shelters for kids, to help runaways, and by doing so…"
"Relax, I already wrote a check." Andre cut the man off. "I don't mind the fudging charity. The Inter-Orientation Alliance has been doing good work these last few years, and I even love the approach, helping everyone in order to help your target group. Great PR, cause it says the community cares, while helping those who've been forced to run from good homes to find their way back. Heck, I'd have happily participated in almost any charity. Almost. Only, this is a slave auction…" He let his voice fade.
"It's a dating auction." The representative corrected. "You go up, complete with a date you've planned, and they bid on the chance for a fantasy date. It's all in good fun, and we get to show off members of our community, as well as our allies. It's why it's so important to have representatives from the allies, especially high profiles allies, because…" He stopped, noticing the look the semi-famous singer and in demand song writer was giving him. "It's about the stage, isn't it?"
"You mean parading us out on this auction block, like meat?" Dre questioned. "Look, maybe a silent auction, where they bid, and we mingle, that'd be okay. But as a celebrity of color I have to represent…" He sighed. "You understand?"
"We've had Afro-American daters before." The man countered.
"It just feels to real." Andre insisted.
"Maybe I can get one of our other celebrities to talk to you?" The man shifted his tactics. "One moment, I believe miss Valentine is volunteering again. Did you know she was responsible for getting miss West involved last year?"
"So shes the one who got Jade and Tori together?" Andre snapped his fingers as he realized that particular how. "I always wonder why? I mean, after Jade and Beck split, she was even more of a beast. Jade that is. Cat's such a sweety. Probably why she wanted to help Jade out."
"I have her on the line." The man said. "Kinda amazed any celebrity responds so quickly, but not gonna argue…"
"Andre, you there?" Cat asked.
"Yea, guy said you introduced Jade and Tori…" he shifted.
"Actually, they'd already met." Cat's response left open if she was being snarky or just didn't remember he'd known both for years. "But after almost a year of friends with bennies with Jade, I realized she just can't do that kind of relationship. Naturally, I needed to hook her up quick, and not only was she fairly attracted to Tori, thus Tor was always a threat to her and Beck, but our girl Vega was willing to take the bullet. Hell, Trina was willing, but I felt those two were too similar in personality. Someone would wind up dead." Cat sighed. "I could have used Sam, except again, similar personalities. Plus, turned out she's straight. Girls just has no respect for my plans. Thought about introducing her to Beck, only he's into the wounded doves type, and Sam just isn't. Jade was, cause god, personal issues, but Tori agreed to help with those too. Amazing what that girl will do for a friend."
"Ummmmm…" Andre tried to find words.
"Anyways, you doing this is important, not just to the cause, but it opens an auditorium full of sexual repressed fan types to those of us willing to go a little further if their hot." Cat continued. "So, short version, just do it, cause I have Sam still in reserve, now that Beck is off on his next crusade, and Robbie was used as a pawn in one of those quests, so he's involved and happy now, and I'm alone, horny, and have a hot, psychotic blond with no one to point her at."
"Any chance some, or all, of that was just the ramblings of a wild imagination, like you used to do back in school?" He begged.
"Boy, almost everything I told you guys was true." Cat scolded. "My family is kinda messed up."
"So, um, not doing the auction….?" He tried.
"Yes, you are." Cat shifted tactics. "Cause if you don't, Tori might feel she has to fill in. Tori, who's involved with Jade. You remember her, right? Tall, hot, kinda jealous, and very dangerous when she's not making art, and making chizloads of money making her art."
"Girl, how is it you know two hot but deranged girls?" Andre asked.
"I have a type?" Cat guessed. "No mater, I need to find me someone to pet this kitty. That means you do this, cause while men are dogs, I don't mind the chance." She chuckled. "Okay, you get where I was going, right?"
"Honestly, not waning to ever know where you're going…" The musician said. "Wait, you and Jade? And Tori knew…" he dreaded whatever answer was coming.
"Tori's known for years, ever since we used to do the funny nugget show." Cat said so causally.
"You two…?" he felt like his brain was about to melt.
"God no." Cat protested. "Tori was always to above board… I fucked Trina. For three years, we had a no strings attached kinda relationship. Made is hella awkward when she'd ask my help going after a new boy, except I don't get attached that way to girls. I just get off. And when Trina went off to collage, I seduced Jade, cause bosoms. Only, miscalculated, after a while, when she didn't have Beck to come back to, I found her looking for something familiar, and you know the rest. Still, I miss having a girl I can just relax with. Thinking this is the year I find out. Only, that auction, it's my open door for the hunt."
"Please stop." Andre whimpered.
"I need that charity as full as possible, and as I'm not as well known as some people, I need you there to draw." Cat finished. "So, you're doing this, and after, I'm setting you up with Sam. Just so you know I'm serious." The line went dead.
"I've penciled you in for the opening." The fidgety little man informed him. "I know, save the best for last, but if you do that, then the bidders all hold their money for later, and we need as much as possible. Best to open strong, and have a few names sprinkled in the middle." He coughed. "Just women, or can we throw the auction open?"
